Chapter 197 - CHAPTER 197

The light from the core grew brighter.

Not blinding.

Enough to make the shadows in the room move.

As if everything inside it was alive.

Adrian Blackwood stood directly in front of the structure.

His hand raised.

Only a few centimeters away.

He had not touched it yet.

Behind him, Leonard Graves held his position.

His eyes constantly scanning.

Watching every corner.

The footsteps of enemies drew closer.

Their time was running out.

"Hurry," he said softly.

Up above.

Sophia held her breath.

Her eyes never leaving the screen.

Her fingers gripping the device tightly.

As if she could reach Adrian from there.

Daniel monitored every change.

Data moving rapidly.

The system continuously escalating.

"Energy surge rising drastically," he said.

Sophia closed her eyes for a moment.

Trying to piece everything together.

Then opened them again.

Her gaze sharper.

"Do not destroy it."

Silence fell.

Below.

Adrian heard it.

His hand still raised.

Unmoving.

"Why."

Sophia took a breath.

"Because that is not the core."

Daniel understood immediately.

"It's a link."

Sophia nodded.

"If you destroy it now, every other system will activate simultaneously."

Leonard clicked his tongue softly.

"Meaning we'd be pressing the self-destruct button."

Adrian did not lower his hand.

Nor did he move forward.

His eyes narrowed.

Thinking fast.

On the screen.

Marcus still stood calmly.

Marcus Sterling observed every movement.

Every pause.

Every hesitation.

"You are starting to understand," he said.

His voice calm.

Full of control.

Adrian stared at the screen.

"What do you want."

Marcus smiled.

"A choice."

Silence.

Sophia furrowed her brows.

"What choice."

Marcus did not answer immediately.

He made a small gesture.

The screen changed.

The image of the bound figure appeared again.

Clearer.

Closer.

Daniel tensed.

"He's cornering us."

Sophia looked deeper.

Her mind working rapidly.

Fragments of memory resurfaced.

Pieces of the past.

Everything began to connect.

"That is not just a hostage," she said softly.

Adrian turned slightly.

"Explain."

Sophia took a breath.

"It is the key."

Silence fell.

Deeper.

Marcus smiled wider.

"Exactly."

Leonard exhaled a long breath.

"So all of this."

Marcus continued.

"Is a door."

Adrian looked at the core before him.

Then the screen.

Then back to the core.

"If we do not destroy it."

He paused briefly.

"What happens."

Daniel answered quickly.

"The system remains active."

Sophia added.

"And he keeps control."

Silence.

Adrian clenched his fist.

The choice was clear.

Both were bad.

Behind them.

Footsteps grew closer.

Sounds of impact began to echo again.

Leonard prepared himself.

"Time's up."

Sophia closed her eyes for a moment.

Then opened them.

Her expression changed.

Calm.

Certain.

"We take the key."

Daniel turned immediately.

"Are you sure."

Sophia nodded.

"It's the only way to sever everything without triggering the other systems."

Adrian looked at the screen.

His eyes deep.

Marcus watched.

His smile never fading.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"You are truly interesting," he said.

Adrian stared back.

"You have played for too long."

Marcus laughed softly.

"And you have only just begun."

Leonard moved.

Holding back the assault coming from the corridor.

Clashes erupted again.

Harder.

Closer.

Adrian pulled his hand away from the core.

The decision was made.

"We leave."

Leonard smirked.

"Finally."

Daniel moved instantly.

"I'm preparing the route."

Sophia gripped her device.

Her heart beating faster.

This was not over.

Below.

Adrian turned around.

His movements fast.

Controlled.

Leonard cleared the path.

The team followed.

They were no longer searching.

They were exiting.

Marcus did not stop them.

He simply stood.

Watching.

"Go," he said softly.

Silence.

"Because now."

He paused.

"You will come back."

Adrian did not look back.

The words sank in.

Up above.

Sophia stared at the screen.

Her breathing slowly stabilizing.

Her gaze remained sharp.

"He wants us to come."

Daniel nodded.

"And we will."

Sophia exhaled softly.

"But this time."

Her expression hardened.

"We decide the ending."

Below.

The team finally reached the exit corridor.

The air felt different.

Lighter.

But not truly safe.

Adrian stopped briefly.

Glancing back.

Towards the door they had just left.

His eyes narrowed.

Because he knew.

What they had seen today.

Was only a small part.

And the real battle.

Had just begun.

Their pace did not slow.

The corridor that once felt long now felt narrower.

More oppressive.

No one looked back.

Adrian Blackwood led the way.

His movements fast.

Calculated.

Every turn already mapped out.

As if the layout of this place was etched into his mind.

Behind him, Leonard Graves covered the team's rear.

Every sound that approached was met instantly.

No gaps.

No mistakes.

Sounds of combat still echoed.

Now fading.

Slowly.

"I'm opening a side path," Daniel's voice came through the comms.

Adrian did not stop.

"Hurry."

A few seconds later.

One of the wall panels slid open.

A narrow passage appeared.

Dark.

But sufficient.

"Move in," said Adrian.

The team moved without hesitation.

One by one.

Disappearing into the path.

The air inside was colder.

More humid.

But safe.

For now.

Leonard entered last.

The panel closed again.

Erasing their trail.

Silence.

Since they entered.

Truly quiet.

Adrian stopped.

Drawing a slow breath.

Briefly.

"We are not out yet."

Leonard nodded.

"And they are not done."

Up above.

Sophia watched the screen without blinking.

The dots representing their position moved.

Drifting away from the center.

Still not safe.

"He is not chasing," she said softly.

Daniel turned.

"No."

He paused.

"He is letting us go."

Silence fell.

Sophia exhaled.

"Meaning he is certain."

Daniel continued.

"That we will return."

Sophia did not deny it.

Because she knew.

It was true.

Inside the narrow passage.

Adrian walked on.

This time slower.

More cautious.

"How much further," asked Leonard.

Daniel answered.

"Two hundred meters."

Leonard exhaled.

"Not bad."

Their footsteps sounded again.

More muffled.

Moments later.

Faint light appeared at the end of the path.

Adrian quickened his pace.

They emerged on the other side of the building.

A quieter area.

More open.

The outside air felt different.

Freer.

Yet no one truly relaxed.

Leonard scanned the surroundings.

"Clear."

Adrian nodded.

His eyes still vigilant.

"Move," he said.

They distanced themselves from the location.

Fast.

Without drawing attention.

Elsewhere.

Marcus Sterling still stood in the control room.

The screen before him showing their escape route.

He did not move.

Gave no orders.

Someone beside him asked.

"We are letting them go."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Why."

Marcus stared deeper into the screen.

"Because they are carrying what we want."

Silence.

"And they will come back on their own."

Back inside the vehicle.

Adrian sat still.

His gaze forward.

His mind far away.

Leonard beside him broke the silence.

"So."

He glanced slightly.

"What's the plan."

Adrian did not answer immediately.

Several seconds passed.

"We get the key."

Leonard smiled faintly.

"Finally clear."

On the other side.

Daniel was still monitoring.

"The hostage location is not fixed."

Sophia immediately sat up slightly.

"What."

Daniel zoomed in on the data.

"He's moving them."

Sophia frowned.

"He knows we are coming."

Daniel nodded.

"And he wants us to chase."

Silence fell.

This time.

More focused.

Sophia took a deep breath.

Her mind working again.

"If he is moving them."

She paused.

"There is a pattern."

Daniel turned.

"What are you thinking."

Sophia looked at the screen.

Her eyes sharp.

"They don't move without reason."

She pointed to the shifting dots.

"This is not random."

Daniel observed.

A few seconds.

Then his eyes widened slightly.

"There is a route."

Sophia nodded.

"And that route leads to something."

Silence.

Daniel drew a breath.

"The next location."

Sophia nodded slowly.

"And this time."

Her gaze hardened.

"We will be waiting."

Inside the vehicle.

Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.

Not to rest.

But to organize.

To calculate.

He opened them again.

Colder.

More ready.

Because now.

The game had changed.

They were no longer the prey.

They would become the hunters.

And beneath it all.

One thing became clear.

The next encounter.

Would not end with them simply walking away.
