Chapter 34 - The First Breach

The first creature moved.

Then everything moved with it.

Wolves burst from the trees. Dire boars tore through the undergrowth. Massive bears charged behind them while smaller Core Monsters crawled between roots and shattered branches.

The village bells began ringing.

*Too late.*

"Hold the line!" Captain Rowan shouted.

The soldiers moved forward. Shields locked. Spears lowered. The first wave crashed against them — the impact shook the road.

Chrono watched immediately. They weren't attacking randomly. The wolves struck first, forcing the soldiers to close their formation. Then the larger creatures charged toward the weakened sections.

*They're dividing the defense.*

"Left flank!" Chrono shouted.

A massive bear immediately crashed into the shields. The soldiers staggered backward.

"Gran!"

Gran moved — his body disappeared in a burst of speed. The wolf slammed into the bear from the side, knocking the larger creature away from the formation. The ground cracked beneath them. Gran landed. The bear stood again. Neither hesitated.

They charged.

---

A wolf leapt toward Chrono. He raised his hand — five *Magic Missiles* appeared instantly.

*BOOM.*

The creature was thrown backward. Another followed immediately. Then another.

Chrono stepped back. "Glask."

The creation moved beside him. Dark mana gathered around his hand. The ground shook. A skeletal arm burst upward and grabbed one of the wolves before crushing it against the earth.

Several soldiers looked toward Glask. Not fear.

*Confusion.* Most of them had never fought beside something like him.

"Focus on the enemy," Chrono said. The soldiers immediately looked away.

---

On the right — Vael moved.

A giant horned boar charged directly toward the formation. "Move!" The soldiers scattered. Vael remained.

His hand rested against the hilt of his sword. The boar lowered its head. Then charged. The ground trembled beneath every step.

Lin frowned. "He's taking that?"

Chrono watched. "No." "He's *reading* it."

The boar reached him. Vael moved — his sword left its sheath in one motion, the blade striking against the creature's horn. Not stopping it.

*Redirecting it.*

The horned boar's momentum shifted. Vael stepped beside it.

Then — a hexagonal symbol appeared across the back of his palm.

Several soldiers stared. "Combat Force!"

Vael's body changed — not visibly larger, not glowing with mana. The air around him *compressed.* Force coated his arm. Then his legs.

Then —

*CRACK.*

Vael disappeared. His sword struck the Core Monster across its exposed side. The impact sent the massive creature crashing through two wooden fences. Dust exploded.

Lin blinked. "…That was Force?"

Chrono nodded. "Yes."

"But it doesn't look like yours."

Chrono glanced at her. "Because mine isn't Force."

---

The horned boar roared. It stood again, blood running from its side. Then it charged — faster.

Vael stepped forward. The hexagon symbol brightened. His body moved — the soldiers barely saw him.

*CLANG.*

The sword struck again. This time, the creature's front leg collapsed. The boar crashed forward.

Vael raised his blade. Then stopped.

Something felt wrong. The creature wasn't afraid. It wasn't fighting to survive. It was fighting because something had *ordered* it to.

Vael's expression hardened. "Your sword isn't yours anymore."

His blade descended. The Core Monster stopped moving.

---

"VAEL!"

Lin shouted. A massive wolf leapt from the side.

Vael turned — too late.

A black blur passed through the air. The wolf was struck from above.

*BOOM.*

Kael landed on its back, dark feathers surrounding his arms. The soldiers stared. The feathers weren't simply part of his body anymore — they had *hardened,* sharpened into something between wing and weapon.

One slash — the feathers tore through the wolf's armored hide.

Vael looked toward him. "Force?"

Kael glanced back. "Of course."

Vael frowned. "That isn't how humans use it."

Kael smiled slightly. "Exactly."

---

Kael jumped again. His wings opened. Force gathered around the feathers — then he *twisted.*

The feathers detached. Not permanently. Dozens of black feathers shot downward.

*SHHHHHK.*

They struck the wolves below like arrows. Several soldiers stared upward.

Chrono's eyes narrowed. Force wasn't limited to muscles. It could be applied. Shaped. Used through natural weapons.

*Interesting.*

---

A scream came from the village. Everyone looked.

The enemy had reached the houses. A group of smaller creatures had slipped around the main formation.

*Not by accident.*

Chrono understood immediately. "They used the main attack as a distraction."

Lin's eyes widened. "They're inside!"

"Go!"

Lin vanished. *Phantom Step.* She flickered across the battlefield. Gran followed. Chrono moved after them —

Then stopped.

Something enormous emerged from the forest. The giant spider from before — its armored body climbing over the trees, eight glowing eyes watching the battlefield.

Chrono looked up. "It's here."

The spider didn't attack him.

*It watched. Again.*

---

An arrow flew. The spider's eye shattered.

Everyone turned. Elarion stood several meters away, another arrow already drawn. The air around it felt *different* — the forest itself seemed to react. Leaves trembled. Wind shifted.

The arrow flew.

*THOOM.*

It struck the spider's armored body, the explosion forcing the monster backward.

One soldier stared at the elf. "How did —"

Elarion didn't answer. He fired again. And again. Every arrow struck exactly where the spider moved *next.*

Chrono watched closely. He wasn't predicting its movements. Something else was helping him.

The elf's eyes narrowed. "Nature remembers its children."

Chrono looked at him. "What does that mean?"

"Later."

---

The giant spider suddenly moved — straight toward Elarion.

Chrono stepped forward. "Not later."

Dark mana gathered around his body. His hand reached for the sword at his waist. Lin had already reached the village. Gran was fighting among the houses. Glask was holding the left flank. Vael and Kael were keeping the main wave back.

Chrono was alone.

For once — magic wasn't the best answer.

He pulled his sword. "Combat Force."

The air compressed. Force surged through his body — muscles tightening, movement changing. Then he *disappeared* forward.

The spider's leg came down. Chrono stepped inside its range. The ground exploded behind him.

He raised his sword. *Sword Dance.*

Not one heavy strike. A sequence.

His body flowed between the spider's legs. Step. Turn. Strike. He cut one joint — then another. The spider roared. Chrono spun. His sword struck again. The final leg collapsed. The Core Monster crashed sideways.

The soldiers stared. "He's a mage!"

Chrono landed. "That doesn't mean I can't use a sword."

---

The spider moved again. Too fast. One remaining leg struck toward Chrono. He raised his blade — Combat Force strengthened his arm.

*CRACK.*

The impact pushed him backward. His boots tore through the ground. Chrono stopped. His fingers tightened. The spider was stronger than expected.

Then — Vael appeared beside him.

"You've improved."

Chrono looked at him. "You noticed?"

"Your footwork still needs work."

Chrono frowned. "Helpful."

---

The spider attacked again. Vael stepped forward, the hexagon symbol still visible on his hand. Force coated his body.

Then — something changed. Chrono noticed first.

*Mana.* Moving toward Vael's sword. Not his arm. Not his body.

*The blade.*

A faint star-shaped symbol appeared beneath Vael's sleeve, near his shoulder. Chrono's eyes widened.

*He's doing it.*

The sword became surrounded by something unfamiliar — thin, unstable, the mana not reinforcing Vael but *compressing* around the steel.

The spider attacked. Vael raised his sword. One strike.

The blade passed through the spider's armored leg.

*Cleanly.*

The battlefield froze.

Kael landed nearby, eyes narrowed. "What was that?"

One soldier whispered, "Force?"

"No." Chrono answered quietly. The soldiers looked toward him.

But before he could say anything — Vael lowered his sword. The strange mana disappeared. The star symbol faded beneath his sleeve. Vael exhaled — his breathing heavier than before.

Lin returned from the village. She stared at the cut Core Monster. "…You used it again."

Vael nodded once. "Only for a moment."

Kael looked between them. "Used what?"

Vael didn't answer.

Chrono did. "Something *new.*"

---

The battlefield changed.

The beasts stopped attacking — all of them, at once. Wolves. Bears. Boars. Core Monsters. Every creature simply *stopped.*

The giant spider looked directly at Chrono.

Then began retreating.

"Don't let them escape!" Captain Rowan shouted.

Chrono immediately raised his hand. "Wait."

The soldiers stopped. "Why?"

Chrono looked around. The village remained standing. Most of the defenders were injured, but alive. The attack hadn't failed.

His expression darkened. "It got what it wanted."

Everyone looked toward him.

Vael understood first. "Information."

Chrono nodded. "It tested our defenses." His gaze moved across the battlefield — their response time, the strength of the soldiers, the abilities of the commanders, the number of reinforcements, the range of their techniques.

The enemy had seen everything.

And now — it was leaving.

---

Far beyond the battlefield, deep inside the forest, a figure slowly opened its eyes.

Through the eyes of wolves. Through bears. Through monsters. It had watched — the human warriors, the Beastkin, the elf, the artificial wolf, the strange mage, and the swordsman.

The figure smiled. "MistHaven responds quickly." A pause. "But not quickly enough."

The creatures continued retreating. The village remained behind — damaged, shaken.

*Alive.*

The Beast Shepherd had never intended to destroy it.

*That was the problem.*

This had only been the first breach.
