The eastern village survived.
*Barely.*
By the time the final beast disappeared into the forest, the road was covered in broken weapons, shattered shields, and deep tracks carved into the earth.
No one celebrated. The enemy had retreated too easily.
Chrono stood at the edge of the forest, staring into the darkness between the trees. It was quiet again.
*Too quiet.*
Captain Rowan approached from behind. "They're gone."
Chrono didn't turn. "No."
Rowan frowned.
Chrono's eyes remained fixed on the forest. "They're waiting."
---
The wounded were gathered inside the village. Lin moved between injured soldiers, helping those still able to walk toward the temporary medical tents. Glask stood nearby, his presence alone making several villagers uncomfortable.
Gran remained near the forest. Watching. His ears twitched.
Chrono eventually approached him. "You hear something?"
Gran lowered his head. "No."
Chrono frowned. Gran looked toward him. "That's why I don't like it."
The wolf's eyes moved across the trees. "The forest is never quiet."
Chrono understood. Even after a battle, there should have been birds. Insects. Something.
But there was nothing.
The Beast Shepherd had not merely gathered an army. *It had changed the forest itself.*
---
Behind them, Vael sat against the broken remains of a stone wall, his sword resting across his knees.
Lin walked toward him. "You pushed it too far."
Vael glanced upward. "I'm fine."
Lin looked at his arm. "Your shoulder is shaking."
Vael said nothing. The faint star-shaped mark near his upper arm had already faded. But Chrono had seen it. And so had several others.
Kael approached slowly. "What was that?" He pointed toward Vael's sword. "The power you used."
Vael remained silent.
Elarion stood nearby. "I have seen humans use Force." His gaze moved toward Vael's weapon. "But I have never seen it behave like that."
Chrono stepped forward. "Because it wasn't Force."
Everyone looked toward him.
Kael folded his arms. "Then what was it?"
Chrono looked at Vael. Vael gave the smallest nod — not permission to explain everything. Only enough.
"*Aura.*"
The name meant nothing to them.
Kael frowned. "Aura?"
"It's unfinished," Chrono continued before anyone could misunderstand. "Force reinforces the body." His eyes moved toward Kael. "Humans usually use it like armor." Then toward Vael's sword. "Aura reinforces the weapon."
Kael's eyes narrowed. "So you're saying he can apply Force to a sword?"
"No." Chrono answered immediately. The difference mattered. "It's not Force."
---
Elarion studied Vael. "The energy was mana."
Chrono nodded. "Compressed mana."
Several soldiers nearby turned toward them. A captain frowned. "That's impossible."
Chrono glanced at him. "Why?"
"Mana is used for magic."
Chrono almost smiled. "Exactly." The captain looked confused. "That's why Aura is different." His gaze returned toward Vael. "Force follows the body." A pause. "*Aura follows the sword.*"
Vael slowly lifted his blade. The others watched.
"Matt called it the beginning of a new foundation."
Kael raised an eyebrow. "Matt?"
"The one who discovered it." Vael's hand tightened around the sword. "He's still developing it."
Chrono nodded. "So am I."
That confused Lin. "You?"
"I helped him understand the mana."
Lin stared. "You never told me that."
"I know."
Lin folded her arms. "You're terrible at sharing important information."
Chrono considered it. "That's fair."
---
Elarion looked toward the forest again. "A new foundation during a war." His expression became thoughtful. "That is either fortunate." A pause. "Or dangerous."
No one disagreed.
Because power did not remain secret forever. The Beast Shepherd had *seen* it.
---
That realization returned to Chrono immediately. His expression changed.
"Rowan."
The captain turned. "Yes?"
"The retreat." Chrono began counting quietly. "Response time. Number of soldiers. Defensive formation." His gaze moved toward Vael. "Force." Then Elarion. "The elf." Then Kael. "The Beastkin." Finally — himself. "My magic."
Lin's expression changed. "You think the attack was a test."
Chrono looked toward the destroyed road. "No." A pause. "*I know it was.*"
---
The village bell suddenly rang. Everyone turned.
A soldier came running from the northern side. "Captain!"
Rowan immediately stepped forward. "What happened?"
"Tracks!" The soldier pointed toward the forest. "More of them!"
The soldiers tightened their grip on their weapons. But Chrono raised his hand. "How many?"
The soldier hesitated. "Only three."
Everyone stared. "Three?"
Rowan frowned. "What kind?"
The soldier's face went pale. "A wolf." He swallowed. "A bear." Then — "A troll."
The atmosphere changed immediately.
Core Monsters were dangerous. But a troll was *something different.* Large. Intelligent. Difficult to kill.
Elarion's hand moved toward his bow. Kael's feathers shifted. Vael stood.
Chrono stepped forward. "Don't chase them."
Rowan stared at him. "They're close."
"Exactly." Chrono pointed toward the forest. "That's what they want."
---
Far away — inside MistHaven — the council chamber had gathered once again.
The reports from the eastern village were delivered before midnight. King Aldren listened without speaking. A village attacked. An organized army of beasts. Core Monsters. A troll near the border.
Every report confirmed the same thing. The eastern forest was preparing for war.
"We need to move more soldiers east." One general spoke. Another immediately shook his head. "And weaken the capital?" "If we do nothing, the border villages will fall." "Then evacuate them." A noble frowned. "And surrender our eastern territory?"
The arguments began again. Just as they always did.
But this time — something was different. Everyone knew Chrono had been right. The enemy was not attacking isolated targets. It was *testing* them. Learning. Adapting.
King Aldren slowly looked toward the map. "How long until reinforcements can reach the eastern border?"
"Two days."
"Too long."
"One day, if we strip the western checkpoints."
A merchant immediately objected. "Our caravans —"
King Aldren raised his hand. "They can wait."
---
Near the edge of the chamber, the council secretary quietly wrote the orders.
Move soldiers east. Reduce western checkpoints. Increase protection around the capital. Inspect food warehouses.
Every decision entered the records. Every decision was written.
*Every decision was observed.*
The secretary lowered his head.
And smiled.
---
Later that night, the same secretary walked alone through MistHaven — moving through a different route than before. Not toward the warehouses. Not toward the eastern gate.
He entered the abandoned western district. A place still damaged by the riots. No guards watched the broken streets. No merchants remained.
The secretary stopped beside a collapsed building. "Speak."
Nothing answered. Then — a figure stepped from the shadows.
The secretary's body *rippled.* His face changed.
The figure in front of him remained hidden beneath a dark cloak. "What did they decide?"
The shapeshifter answered. "They are moving their forces east." A pause. "The western checkpoints will be weakened."
The hidden figure was silent.
Then — "Good."
The shapeshifter's eyes narrowed. "The Beast Shepherd attacks from the east."
"It will." The figure answered. "But that doesn't mean we have to."
For the first time — the shapeshifter looked *uncertain.*
Then the figure disappeared into the darkness.
---
Morning came to MistHaven without peace.
The kingdom had made its decision. Soldiers began moving east. Caravans were redirected. Villages received evacuation orders. The capital prepared for a larger attack.
Everyone watched the forest.
*No one watched the west.*
---
Chrono stood outside the eastern village. He had not slept. Neither had Vael. Gran remained beside him. Elarion sat beneath a tree, listening to the forest. Kael stood above them on the broken roof of a house, watching the sky.
Lin approached Chrono. "You've been thinking all night."
Chrono nodded. "Something doesn't fit."
"About the Beast Shepherd?"
"No." Chrono looked back toward MistHaven. "About us."
Lin followed his gaze. "The shapeshifter?"
Chrono didn't answer. Not because he disagreed — because the thought had already crossed his mind. Someone knew MistHaven's decisions before they happened. Someone had known every convoy route. Someone knew when reinforcements moved. Someone had information they shouldn't have.
But even knowing that — he still had no proof.
"Maybe."
Lin watched him carefully. "That's not reassuring."
"It wasn't supposed to be."
---
A shadow passed over them. Kael looked upward. Then — his expression changed.
"Elarion."
The elf opened his eyes. "What?"
Kael pointed toward the western horizon.
Smoke. Thin at first. Then more.
Chrono slowly stood. The smoke was nowhere near the eastern forest. It came from the *opposite* direction.
*MistHaven.*
A distant horn echoed across the fields. Once. Twice. Then again. Not an eastern alarm.
*A western one.*
Chrono's expression darkened.
The enemy had predicted the kingdom's response. The Beast Shepherd had forced MistHaven to move east. And someone — somewhere — had made sure the west was *waiting.*
Vael slowly drew his sword. The faint hexagonal mark appeared across the back of his palm. "How fast can we return?"
Kael spread his wings. "Not fast enough."
Gran growled.
The ground beneath Chrono's feet seemed to vibrate — not from an approaching monster, but from the realization settling into place like stone.
MistHaven had not been forced to choose between two defenses.
*It had been manipulated into opening one.*
And now — the enemy was already inside.
