The gates of MistHaven appeared before sunset.
For most of the journey back, nobody spoke.
The forest remained behind them. Silent. Watching.
Chrono could still feel it — not a physical presence, not mana. Something worse.
*Awareness.*
The Beast Shepherd had allowed them to leave. That single fact bothered him more than an attack would have.
An enemy that wanted you dead was simple. An enemy that wanted to *understand* you —
wasn't.
---
The moment they entered the castle, Captain Rowan's report was delivered directly to King Aldren. The council gathered again before nightfall.
This time — there was no arguing. Not at first.
Chrono stood near the map table beside Vael and Lin while Captain Rowan described what they had seen. Animals. Beasts. Core Monsters. Standing together. Waiting. Obeying.
The king remained silent throughout the report. When Rowan finished — King Aldren finally spoke.
"Are you certain?"
The ranger slowly lowered his head. "I have spent twenty-three years in those forests, Your Majesty." His voice was steady. "But I have never been more certain of anything."
A heavy tension settled over the chamber.
One general looked toward the map. "If ordinary animals and Core Monsters are moving together…"
Another finished the thought. "…then the eastern border is already compromised."
A noble shook his head. "No. One creature cannot control an entire forest."
Chrono spoke before Rowan could answer. "Then it isn't one creature."
The room turned toward him.
"It could be one individual giving commands. But whatever is happening there involves hundreds — maybe thousands — of creatures." His gaze moved across the map. "That means the problem isn't controlling one monster." He pointed toward the eastern forest. "It's controlling an *ecosystem.*"
No one answered immediately.
Because everyone understood what that meant. MistHaven's borders were not facing an army.
*The army was already living beyond them.*
---
The chamber doors opened. A guard stepped inside. "Your Majesty. The foreign representatives have arrived."
Several nobles looked confused. King Aldren nodded. "Send them in."
Two figures entered.
The first was tall and slender, wearing a dark green cloak over light leather armor, a longbow resting across his back. His ears were pointed. Several council members immediately recognized him.
An elf.
The second figure entered behind him — broad-shouldered and heavily built, dark feathers running along his forearms and the sides of his neck. His eyes were sharp. Almost predatory. A pair of folded black wings rested behind his back.
A Beastkin.
Lin raised an eyebrow. "Well."
Vael glanced at her. "What?"
"Nothing." She looked toward the newcomers. "Just not what I expected."
---
The elf bowed first. "Elarion of the eastern woodland." His voice was calm. "Representative of the border enclaves."
The Beastkin crossed one arm over his chest. "Kael." His eyes moved briefly toward the soldiers. "Scout."
One noble frowned. "That is all?"
Kael looked at him. "…Yes."
Lin almost laughed. The noble immediately looked away.
Chrono studied them quietly. Neither seemed particularly impressed by the royal chamber.
*That alone was interesting.*
King Aldren gestured toward the map. "You were both called because your people have been reporting unusual activity."
Elarion stepped forward. "The eastern woodland is sick."
The words immediately caught Chrono's attention.
"Sick?" King Aldren asked.
The elf nodded. "Nature has rhythms. Predators hunt prey. Herds migrate. Mana gathers and disperses." His expression tightened. "Those rhythms are being *interrupted.*"
Kael spoke next. "The animals stopped acting like animals." He pointed toward several villages on the map. "I tracked wolves for three days. They abandoned territory." His finger moved. "Bears moved south." Another mark. "Boars began traveling at night." He looked toward the council. "They're moving toward something."
Chrono's eyes narrowed. *That matched exactly what they had seen.*
---
One of the generals folded his arms. "So the elf senses something wrong with nature, and the Beastkin agrees the animals are behaving strangely."
Kael slowly looked at him. "You say that like I was brought here to confirm a rumor."
The general frowned. "I meant no disrespect."
"Good." The Beastkin's feathers shifted slightly. "Because I didn't cross three kingdoms for one."
The atmosphere tightened.
King Aldren immediately raised a hand. "Enough." His gaze turned toward Chrono. "You have seen the forest yourself. What do you believe?"
Chrono looked at the map. Then toward Elarion. Then Kael.
"Both are correct." The council waited. "Something is forcing creatures to abandon their natural behavior." A pause. "But it isn't simply controlling them."
Vael looked at him. "Then what?"
Chrono remembered Gran's words — *they are afraid, but they move anyway.*
His expression darkened. "It gives them a *reason* to move."
---
A horn sounded across the castle.
Everyone froze. Once. Twice. Then again.
*An emergency signal.*
A knight burst through the chamber doors. "Your Majesty!" He nearly fell. "The eastern border!"
King Aldren stepped forward. "What happened?"
The knight swallowed. "A village has been attacked."
The chamber erupted. "How many?" "Which village?" "By what?"
The knight's face had gone pale. "Everything."
The room went still.
"Wolves. Bears. Dire wolves. Core Monsters." His voice cracked. "They're attacking *together.*"
Chrono looked toward the eastern forest.
*Too soon.*
The Beast Shepherd had not needed long. It had learned. Now — it was testing the kingdom.
---
King Aldren's orders came immediately. "Mobilize the eastern defense."
The general hesitated. "Your Majesty, we still don't know the size of the enemy force."
"Then find out."
Another officer stepped forward. "The main army cannot leave the capital without weakening the walls."
King Aldren's expression hardened. "I didn't order the main army." His gaze moved toward Chrono and the others. "A reconnaissance and response force."
Chrono understood immediately — not enough soldiers to expose MistHaven, but enough to stop a village from being erased.
"Captain Rowan."
"Yes, Your Majesty."
"You will lead the unit."
The captain bowed. "At once."
The king looked toward Elarion. "Will your people assist?"
The elf nodded slowly. "The forest may not be mine to control." His hand rested against his bow. "But I will not allow it to become their weapon."
King Aldren turned toward Kael. "And you?"
The Beastkin's eyes narrowed. "I was already going."
---
Within minutes, the eastern gate opened.
Soldiers moved through the streets. Horses were prepared. Weapons distributed. The city that had only just begun recovering now found itself preparing for another attack.
Chrono stood near the gate with Vael and Lin. Gran waited beside him. Glask stood silently nearby.
Elarion approached first. His eyes moved toward Gran — and he stopped.
"Interesting."
Gran looked back.
Chrono raised an eyebrow. "What?"
Elarion studied the massive wolf carefully. "I have never seen a creature like him."
Gran's ears flattened. "Neither have I."
Lin smiled. "That makes two of you."
Kael approached beside them. His sharp eyes moved across Gran, then Glask, then Chrono.
"Your group is strange."
Chrono nodded. "You're not exactly ordinary either."
Kael smirked.
For the first time — the tension eased. *Only slightly.*
---
The journey toward the eastern village took less than three hours. But the signs appeared long before they reached it.
Broken fences. Abandoned carts. Livestock wandering without owners.
Then — smoke.
Lin's expression changed. "That's the village."
The soldiers immediately moved faster. Captain Rowan raised his hand. "Formation!"
The unit spread across the road. Elarion moved toward the left flank.
Kael looked upward.
Then — he jumped.
The black wings behind his back *opened.* Several soldiers stared. His body launched upward, and something compressed around him — not mana, not quite, but something physical and dense that pushed him faster than wings alone should allow. He disappeared above the trees.
Lin noticed Chrono watching. "You know what that is?"
Chrono shook his head. "But I know what it isn't."
Vael looked at him. "*Force?*"
Chrono glanced toward him. "Maybe."
---
Kael descended fast — landing hard enough beside them to crack the ground.
"Village is surrounded." Captain Rowan immediately approached. "How many?"
Kael's expression changed. "…More than we expected."
Chrono looked toward the distant smoke. "How many?"
The Beastkin stared at the forest. "Enough."
Then — the first howl echoed.
The eastern forest *answered.*
Dozens of crimson eyes appeared between the trees. Then hundreds. The soldiers tightened their grip around their weapons.
Gran stepped forward, his body lowering. Glask raised his hand — dark mana gathering around his fingers. Vael placed his hand slowly over the hilt of his sword. Lin adjusted her stance. Elarion removed an arrow. Kael looked upward again.
And Chrono — felt something beneath his feet.
A faint vibration. Approaching.
The ground trembled. Once. Twice.
Then — something massive crashed through the trees.
A giant horned boar emerged from the forest. Behind it — wolves, bears, dire beasts, Core Monsters. An army that had learned to move as one.
But they didn't attack immediately. They stopped.
*Watching.*
Chrono's eyes narrowed. The Beast Shepherd was here — not physically, but somewhere, watching through countless eyes, measuring the distance between its herd and the humans standing before them.
Then a wolf tilted its head.
And every creature moved at once.
The battle began.
