Chapter 405 - The Mundane Realities of an Imperial World

Among the countless worlds of the Imperium to suffer the scourge of an Ork invasion, Gilaklos was a recently established industrial world.

A lightly toxic, acrid smog rolled unceasingly across its surface. The outer curtain walls of the planetary hive complexes had already suffered more than a thirty percent collapse. Packed tighter than sardines in a ration tin, regiments of the Astra Militarum and Planetary Defense Forces occupied newly entrenched positions encircling the hive's perimeter.

Behind them, lines of Basilisk artillery pieces maintained a near-continuous, earth-shaking roar.

The feral Orks went so far as to ram their crude Kroozers headfirst directly into the world's crust, entirely indifferent to the catastrophic impacts, solely to deploy more troops into the meat grinder.

Their brutal evolutionary logic, honed through bitter wars with the Tyranids, dictated that to catch an enemy unprepared, one had to strike with utter suddenness and an overwhelming manifestation of Waaagh! energy.

At the direction of Warboss Steeltoof, the greenskins had begun implementing a far more violent and exaggerated method of orbital insertion. Beyond the various drop pods launched from capital ships, crashing smaller vessels straight into the ground had proven far more efficient. Once grounded, an Ork escort ship functioned as a massive, heavily armored logistical hub, providing an endless supply of scrap metal and salvageable components.

Compared to the Ork hordes the Imperium had historically encountered, this particular host, descending from the Octarius Sector, was terrifyingly advanced.

As the jury-rigged, scrap-iron vessels tore into the bedrock, uncounted numbers of Ork Boyz surged outward aboard a chaotic fleet of Trukks, multi-wheeled buggies, and shuddering, clanking walkers that spat thick plumes of black exhaust into the sky.

Spearheading the armored wedge was a massive column of bizarre, smoke-belching heavy vehicles the greenskins called Battlewagons. In truth, "Battlewagon" was an all-encompassing classification for the Orks, applied to any heavy transport or assault tank. More often than not, it referred to the "flashy" heavy trucks modified to carry an entire mob of speed-crazed greenskins alongside their attendant Gretchin, Snotlings, and Squigs.

These heavy transports were lumbering, deafeningly loud, and colossal. To any individual Ork, possessing a Battlewagon was the ultimate symbol of wealth and status, it was the epitome of being "flashy."

Consequently, the vast majority of these vehicles belonged to prominent Nobz. Occasionally, a Weirdboy might temporarily commandeer one, but during major conflicts, the proud Warlords would pack themselves and their entire retinues into these massive iron beasts to crash headlong into the fray. If a Warlord's retinue was sufficiently vast, he might command an entire fleet of them, provided, of course, that the boss possessed enough "teef" to pay off the local Mekboyz to build them.

The standardization of these war machines was non-existent. While most relied on multi-wheeled chassis, it was entirely common to see specialized variants utilizing heavy tracks or even jury-rigged gravity-skimmer platforms.

Yet, despite their structural variations, they shared one universal feature: every Battlewagon was adorned with towering banner poles, proudly displaying their clan crests or personal glyphs in the most ostentatious manner possible.

While the open-topped variants armed only with Big Shootas and crude lobbas fit the traditional definition of a Trukk, many had heavy armor plating welded onto their hulls that rivaled the thickness of Imperial battle tanks. These up-armored juggernauts were outfitted with devastating, oversized weaponry, including massive Kannon, Deff Rollas, and heavy wrecking balls.

Interspersed throughout the vanguard alongside these bizarre, heavy war machines were legions of eccentric light vehicles resembling heavily modified off-road buggies. Had one chosen to ignore the massive battle cannons welded to their chassis, weapons with more than enough low-velocity yield to punch through Imperial armor, these light vehicles might have appeared somewhat conventional.

Mobs of Speed Freeks tore across the ash wastes on sputtering Warbikes, piloting vehicles that bounced violently across the uneven trenches.

A dense cloud of stikkbombs rained down continuously, blanketed the Imperial defensive lines and plunging into the trenches. The agonizing screams of the PDF and Astra Militarum mixed with the guttural, euphoric roars of the greenskins.

Ork Boyz leaped in droves from the heavy Trukks, brandishing crude, heavy choppas and massive, scrap-assembled sluggas as they threw themselves into brutal hand-to-hand combat with the Imperial defenders in the trenches.

Heavy Ork armor rolled thunderously toward the front lines, their hulls mounting multi-barrel cannons and massive, over-calibrated gun tubes.

Weaved through the armored columns were bizarre, tower-like mobile structures filled to capacity with trembling, twitching Weirdboyz, the unstable currents of raw psychic energy crackling visibly between the iron frameworks.

Evidently, the level of mechanization and technological crude-mastery exhibited by this Ork horde far exceeded that of any greenskins encountered in standard warzones.

This surge in technological capability was the direct result of the Orks being forced to adapt during their apocalyptic meat-grinder war against the Tyranids.

Before Warboss Steeltoof's return to the Octarius Sector, the greenskins had been pinned in a losing war of attrition. The genetic imperative of the Orks naturally drove them to engage the Tyranid bio-monstrosities in primal hand-to-hand combat.

However, Steeltoof recognized that raw savagery alone would not break the endless swarms of the Great Devourer.

Upon his return, Steeltoof brought with him invaluable tactical insights gained from fighting alongside Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka against the forces of the Imperium. Under the tyrannical command of this massive Warboss, the Orks of Octarius had shifted toward a doctrine of total mechanization and armored breakthrough.

Where the Imperium suffered from bureaucratic bottlenecks, precise manufacturing requirements, and severe logistical strain in replacing personnel, the Orks faced no such constraints.

Mountains of battlefield scrap were rapidly hammered into an endless supply of heavy ordnance and crude armored vehicles. Colossal Stompas, swinging rusted power klaws, had fought the Tyranid Hierophants to a standstill, tearing the massive bio-titans limb from limb.

The thick, crude iron hulls of the Ork war machines, up-armored to every conceivable crevice, proved exceptionally lethal against Tyranid organisms that relied primarily on biological chitin and reinforced flesh for protection.

A low, resonant vibration began to rattle the bedrock, and a mobile, armored mountain slowly loomed out from the rear of the Ork lines, stepping onto the battlefield.

Boom!

A catastrophic detonation ripped through the air, instantly obliterating an Earthshaker cannon battery entrenched deep within the Imperial rear guard.

A towering, monstrous silhouette cut through the thick veil of smoke and localized ash storms hanging over the battlefield.

ROOOOOAAAR!

"By the Throne, what is that?!"

As the deafening, earth-shaking bellow echoed across the coordinates, panic rippled through the surviving Imperial ranks.

Inside the hive's strategic command sanctum, the Imperial Commander pointed a trembling finger at the pict-feed, staring in horror at a heavily armored, colossal reptilian beast carrying a massive superstructure and a macro-caliber cannon on its spine.

"Beep... according to morphological analysis, there is a 73.5 percent probability that the organism is a variant of Great Squiggoth."

A Magos Biologis of the Adeptus Mechanicus offered the assessment, his synthesized voice hesitant as he addressed the commander's query.

"Are you mocking me, Magos?! Can a Squig even grow to such a preposterous size?!"

Faced with the Imperial Commander's contorted, furious expression, the Magos Biologis remained entirely unphased, his cold, augmentative optics fixed on the data.

"The greenskin species possesses extensive biological precedents for cultivating mega-fauna variants within the Squiggenus classification."

At the outer perimeter of the hive city, the beast, standing over forty meters tall, rivaling the immense scale of an Imperial Warlord Titan, began to break into a thundering stride across the shattered warzone.

With every massive step, it effortlessly flattened Imperial armored vehicles into scrap metal. Its dense, leathery hide, combined with layers of bolted-on scrap iron armor, absorbed cascades of heavy weapon fire with complete indifference.

This was an Orkeosaurus. Within the crude, industrial scaffolding strapped to its armored back, a mob of Ork Boyz and their Nob leader were howling with raucous laughter.

Even though the recoil of the massive macro-cannon on the beast's spine left their skulls ringing painfully with every discharge, it did nothing to dampen their absolute euphoria. Tossed violently back and forth by the immense, rocking stride of the beast, the Orks roared at the top of their lungs.

"Roight proppa smashin'! WAAAGH!"

In the brief lulls between the macro-cannon's thunderous volleys, the remaining Boyz manned the secondary mountings, unleashing a relentless, blinding storm of heavy ordnance from twin-linked big shootas and automatic assault cannons into the dense ranks below, entirely uncaring if their stray rounds chewed through their own infantry in the process.
