Chapter 406 - Opening Their Eyes

Zap!

A colossal beam of raw energy tore through the atmosphere with a deafening, molecularly violent hiss, striking the Orkeosaurus square in the torso from the flank of the hive city.

A spectacular explosion instantly engulfed the mega-beast bred by the feral greenskins. As the rolling fireballs subsided, a cavernous, smoking crater was revealed across the creature's flank.

Thump! Thump!

The titanic detonation immediately arrested the attention of every combatant across the warzone.

From the smoke-cloaked ridges flanking the hive city, three towering, majestic mountains of adamantium and ceramite strode into the light.

The Imperial defenders instantly erupted into a deafening chorus of cheers and battle cries, their voices carrying renewed vigor.

"The God Machines walk! In the name of the Emperor, purge the xenos scum!"

The deep, synthesized growl reverberated from the external vox-emitters of a Warlord-class Titan.

Though Gilaklos was a newly constructed industrial world, its strategic placement within the wider segmentum was highly unique. It sat at a critical juncture, not far from the eternal warzone of Armageddon and the ice-bound fortress world of Valhalla. Consequently, the Collegia Titanica of the Adeptus Mechanicus had designated this world as a forward staging point, a rapid-deployment hub meant to counter the recurrent green tides threatening the surrounding sectors.

Tragically, before these holy God Machines could be dispatched to reinforce neighboring systems, the fires of the Ork invasion had engulfed Gilaklos itself.

The Ork armored formations immediately swiveled their macro-cannons and customized gun tubes, desperate to bring down these massive newcomers that exuded an undeniably powerful Waaagh! aura. Yet the God Machines of the Imperium were not so fragile.

The Warlord Titan's arm-mounted Volcano Cannon roared to life once more. The thermal lance vaporized an entire column of Ork vehicles, carving a molten fissure into the very bedrock of the world. Simultaneously, its Plasma Destructor unleashed a blinding, hyper-velocity torrent of superheated matter that slammed directly into the Orkeosaurus, entirely atomizing the beast's head.

The frailties of biological flesh were laid bare in an instant.

Yet, even as the colossal beast listed and collapsed into the dirt, the Orks crewed within its spinal scaffolding managed to discharge their mega-cannon one final time toward the Warlord Titan. The massive, solid-shot shell tore across the sky and detonated violently against the Titan's outermost perimeter.

The pale violet luminescence of the Warlord's Void Shields flickered violently, absorbing the kinetic shockwaves. The shell failed to breach the energy barrier.

Amidst a rising tempest of dust and ash, the Warlord Titans strode over the Imperial trenches. A Laser Blaster unleashed a sustained, concentrated beam of coherent light, sweeping it ruthlessly across the battlefield.

Chain explosions ripped through the Ork armored ranks. Jury-rigged heavy tanks melted into slag under the thermal wash, while lighter buggies were tossed through the air like leaves by the concussive shockwaves.

The tide of battle had broken. Guided by the wrath of three Warlord Titans, the Imperial defenders who had been pinned down under overwhelming pressure rallied with a vengeance.

Whine—!

BOOM!

Even as the Imperial Titans systematically butchered the greenskins below, a sudden, apocalyptic detonation shook the sector. The force of the impact violently threw one of the Warlord Titans entirely off its feet, crashing it into the earth.

"By the Emperor's Throne!"

"Waaagh!"

Countless more greenskins flooded the warzone, their frenzied bellows echoing across the plains. Moving at the center of the dense, swarming host was a towering mountain of scrap metal so immense it drove a cold dread into the hearts of the defenders.

"A Great Gargant!"

The crude titan, standing nearly sixty meters tall, spat thick columns of black soot from its exhaust stacks, its movements accompanied by a rhythmic, mechanical clanking.

As the greenskin war engines lumbered closer, the horrified Imperial command realized this was not a solitary monster, it was an entire line of Great Gargants marching in perfect, brutal formation.

The Ork Kroozers that had been driven headfirst into the planet's surface had already been completely dismantled by the Mekboyz. Every scrap of hull plating and reactor casing had been harvested for a singular purpose: to forge these iron gods of ruin.

Evidently, the Orkeosaurus had merely been a sacrificial vanguard, deployed solely to draw the fire of the Imperial defenses.

As a Warboss who favored the lucky blue of his clan and possessed an exceptionally high tier of low-cunning, Steeltoof was far more devious and ruthless than standard greenskin commanders. From the inception of the campaign, his tactical doctrine had deviated completely from typical Ork raiding patterns.

He had crashed his ships to establish instant bases, emptied the hulls of Boyz to apply pressure, and set his Mekboyz to immediately salvage the vessels to build war engines while Snotlings cultivated subterranean fungus fields in the impact craters. Then, he had thrown the full weight of his mechanized host directly at the hive.

Unlike standard Orks who sought low-cost plundering, the greenskins of the Octarius Sector, operating under Warboss Steeltoof's tyrannical vision, had mastered the art of escalating the material cost of war.

Flanking these structurally unique Great Gargants was a massive auxiliary line of slightly smaller Gargants. These mechanical horrors, spanning scales equivalent to everything from a Warhound to a Warmaster Titan, imposed an unspeakable terror upon the Imperial defense lines.

The Imperial Warlord Titan that had been thrown to the ground had over a third of its chassis completely obliterated. The furious Machine Spirit flooded the Princeps' mind-link with raw, unbridled wrath, causing the commander's skull to throb as if it might rupture from the cognitive load.

The combined fury of the Machine Spirit and the agonizing physical feedback of the pilot translated into a blinding lance of energy from the Titan's remaining Volcano Cannon.

The rapid, violent fluctuations of the battlefield had left both sides numb to the carnage. Explosions tore across every coordinate.

The primary batteries of the Ork Great Gargants unleashed a relentless barrage of heavy shells that completely saturated the position of the three Warlord Titans. In a matter of two devastating salvos, the Imperial war engines were overwhelmed and cast down.

The sheer disparity in mass and volume had settled the engagement.

Despair settled over the Imperial command bunker. The planetary commander grabbed the robes of the Adeptus Mechanicus Magos standing beside him, shaking the tech-priest with hysterical ferocity.

"We need the God Machines! We need more reinforcements! Right now! By the Throne, now!"

The Magos struggled frantically to wrench himself free from the Astra Militarum general's desperate grip. The scale of the Ork offensive had bypassed all strategic projections; even the Collegia Titanica could not have anticipated the need to deploy Emperor-class or Warmaster-class Titans to a newly settled industrial world like Gilaklos.

Whew!

A blinding beam of pure, incandescent light suddenly pierced the upper atmosphere, descending like a spear from the heavens.

The orbital strike punched directly through the center of a Great Gargant.

CRASH!

A cataclysmic explosion tore through the warzone, vaporizing everything within a five-hundred-meter radius in a flash of kinetic fury.

Every eye on the battlefield, mortal and xenos alike, turned toward the clouds. A silver silhouette, trailing a brilliant white shockwave and an atmospheric fire-sheath, plummeted straight out of the void and smashed into the earth.

"The Omnissiah has manifested!"

The Magos, who had been struggling against the general's grip, stared at the main tactical pict-screen behind the commander and screamed in ecstatic devotion.

A colossal, unprecedented mechanical construct loomed through the static-laced feed, its physical dimensions far eclipsing even the legendary Emperor-class Titans of old.

Before the defenders could process the sight, a succession of further "meteors" broke through the atmosphere. Dozens of Destroyer-class Heavy Automata rained down across the coordinates, impacting the earth in perfect synchronization.

Within the primary crater, the Punisher-class Mega-Titan rose to its full height, its colossal mechanical frame defined by clean, flawless, and mathematically perfect lines. The sight of such pristine, uncorrupted engineering nearly caused the Tech-Priests of the Mechanicus to discharge their sacred lubricants in sheer theological awe.

It was a machine of absolute perfection.

In truth, two Punisher-class Mega-Titans had made orbital descent simultaneously. Within the smoking crater left by the obliterated Great Gargant, the second Punisher Titan remained in a braced, crouching posture, shrouded by the rising dust as its internal systems stabilized from the kinetic impact.

The explosive yield of the Ork war engine had slightly exceeded Axion's initial calculations. The first Punisher Titan, which had impacted directly atop the Great Gargant, suffered minor structural aberrations to its secondary joint-assemblies.

As the Orks stared on in stunned, uncomprehending silence, the undamaged Punisher Titan initiated its engagement protocols.

With a rhythmic, earth-shaking stride that caused the terrain to buckle, the Punisher Titan accelerated into a fluid, predatory sprint. In mid-stride, its colossal power claw snapped open.

The forty-meter-long power claw sheared through the air, clamping down upon a second Great Gargant and crushing its structural frame into a compressed mound of useless scrap metal.

The Ork macro-cannons, weapons with sufficient kinetic yield to topple a Warlord Titan, shattered against the Punisher Titan's outer hull, erupting into brilliant cascades of deflected energy. The integrated, form-fitting shield arrays performed flawlessly; short of capital-ship grade lance weaponry, nothing possessed the localized output required to breach these defense fields.

Unfazed by the incoming ordnance, the Punisher Titan raised its Ultra-Heavy Multi-Barrel Cannon, having just pulverized its first target.

The rotary cannons, chambered with an astonishing 6000mm bore, discharged with an atmospheric compression so violent that the mere kinetic back-blast liquefied the greenskins caught within the immediate vicinity.

Vibrant green Waaagh! fields flickered into existence around the remaining Great Gargants, attempting to ward off the strike. Yet the first shell tore the psychic shield to ribbons, and the second reduced the entire sixty-meter iron structure to a scattering of burning debris.

Standing at a colossal one hundred and sixty meters tall, the Punisher-class Mega-Titan represented an absolute, crushing asymmetry against the sixty-meter Great Gargants, an absolute slaughter of primitive iron by a god of true mechanical perfection.
