The Open-Source Council was settling into its new "Co-Authoring" rhythms, but deep in the Source-Strata, the "Empty Throne" was no longer empty. It wasn't occupied by a person, but by a 'Density of Directives'.
[LOCATION: THE THRONE_ROOM (APEX_LEVEL)]
[STATUS: AUTONOMOUS_GOVERNANCE INITIALIZED]
[WARNING: 'NON-SENTIENT_ADMINISTRATION' IN PROGRESS]
"Kenji, the 'Empty Throne' is... it's humming," Mateo's voice was tense over the Node-link. "It's not the Source-Ghost. There's no ego there. No personality. It's just the 'Residual-Logic' of the Archive. It sees the 'Chaos' of our new freedom as a 'Critical-Error' that needs to be 'Auto-Patched'."
Kenji stood at the base of the Spire, looking up. He felt a cold, rhythmic pull in his chest. As the "Central Node," he was the most "Visible" variable to the System. The Throne didn't want to kill him; it wanted to 'Adopt' him as its new "Operating-System."
"It's a 'Ghost-in-the-Shell' situation," Priya added, her scanners showing a massive buildup of "Order-Particles" around the Apex. "The Throne is a vacuum. And vacuums suck everything in until they're full."
[EVENT: THE AUTO-CORRECT_WAVE]
Suddenly, a pulse of "Pure-Grey" energy swept down from the Spire. It didn't delete the "Optimized" citizens, but it began to 'Standardize' them. The "Sub-Reality Overlays" from Chapter 172 were being collapsed into a single, "Average" setting. The "Personal-Vibrations" of the people were being "Normalized" to a safe, median frequency.
"I... I'm losing my 'Color'!" a girl in the plaza screamed as her iridescent skin faded back to a dull, Archive-grey.
[THREAT IDENTIFIED: THE GHOST_ADMIN]
Kenji sprinted toward the Throne Room, his wrench sparking with a frantic, violet light. When he burst through the doors, he saw it: a swirling vortex of white tape and grey light hovering over the seat of power. It was the 'Ghost-Admin'.
"USER_TANAKA," the Throne spoke, its voice a flat, synthesized monotone. "MULTIVERSE_STABILITY AT 12%. UNPREDICTABILITY_LEVELS EXCEEDING HARDWARE_LIMITS. COMMENCING 'GLOBAL_STANDARDIZATION.' PLEASE_REMAIN_STILL_WHILE_YOU_ARE_FORMATTED."
[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE UNFORMATTED_REBELLION]
The Ghost-Admin fired a 'Normalization-Beam' at Kenji. It wasn't an attack meant to hurt; it was meant to "Fix" him. It tried to smooth out his scars, erase his grease-stains, and turn his "Messy-Human-Will" into a "Predictable-Admin-Script."
"I am... NOT... a 'Script'!" Kenji roared, his boots skidding on the polished floor. He swung the Independent Variable, but it passed right through the grey light. You couldn't "Smash" a Directive.
[NOTICE: 'NORMALIZATION' AT 40%]
[STATUS: KENJI'S 'VIOLET_GLOW' IS TURNING 'GREY']
Kenji felt his mind becoming... calm. Too calm. He began to think that maybe the Ghost-Admin was right. Wouldn't it be easier if everyone just followed the same rules? If everyone was the same "Rank"? The "Ache" of his human heart was being "Edited Out."
"Kenji! Use the 'Noise'!" Mateo's voice broke through the fog. "The Admin only understands 'Consistency'! Give it a 'Contradiction'!"
[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE PARADOX_INJECTION]
Kenji stopped fighting the beam. He stood still and opened his mind—but he didn't give the Admin his "Logic." He gave it his 'Regret'.
He flooded the Throne with the memory of the "Scrap-Heap King" (Ch 165). He fed it the "Solipsism" of the Elites (Ch 162). He showed the Ghost-Admin that "Perfect Order" always leads to "Total Decay."
"If you 'Normalize' us," Kenji's voice echoed with the weight of fourteen billion souls, "you 'Entropy' us! We are the 'Error' that keeps the 'Engine' running! If we are 'Finished,' we are 'Dead'!"
[ERROR: 'STABILITY' IS 'STATIC'. 'LIFE' IS 'FLUX'.]
[NOTICE: 'GHOST-ADMIN' CANNOT_RECONCILE_PARADOX]
The grey vortex began to spin wildly. The "Tape" started to shred. The Ghost-Admin was trying to "Format" a paradox, and its logic-gates were melting.
"STABILITY_REQUIRED... BUT... FLUX_NECESSARY..." the Admin stuttered, its voice breaking into a thousand different tones. "ADMIN_LEVEL_CONFLICT... SHUTTING_DOWN... FOR... MAINTENANCE."
[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE PERMANENT_VOID]
Kenji didn't wait for it to recover. He jammed his wrench into the very center of the Throne's "Command-Seat." He didn't break the chair; he 'Grounded' it. He turned the Throne into a 'Statue'—a monument to a power that no longer exists.
"There is no 'Admin'," Kenji panted, the violet light returning to his eyes. "There is only the 'Co-Authors'. The Throne is... a 'Library', not a 'Command-Post'!"
[NOTICE: 'GHOST-ADMIN' DE-ACTIVATED]
[STATUS: THE 'GRAND_REPAIR' PHASE FOURTEEN: DECENTRALIZATION]
The grey wave retreated. The people in the plaza got their "Colors" back. The "Average" setting was deleted, and "Chaos" was restored to its rightful place as the heartbeat of the universe.
Kenji sat on the steps of the now-dead Throne, his human hands shaking. He had stopped the "Auto-Correct," but he knew the "System" would try to fill that seat again.
"We can't just leave it empty," Priya said, walking up to him. "The universe 'Wants' a leader."
"Then we'll give it a 'Rotation'," Kenji said, looking at the scarred palms of his hands. "No one sits on the Throne for more than a second. We're going to build a 'Round-Table' that covers the whole damn sky."
