Chapter 174 - The Spore-Protocol

The Source-Strata was no longer humming with the sound of servers. It was breathing. In the corners of the once-sterile Spire, green-tinted "Logic-Vines" were curling around the data-cables. The air was thick with glowing spores that tasted like ozone and honeysuckle.

[LOCATION: THE LOWER_LEVELS (SECTOR 88)]

[STATUS: UNCONTROLLED_BIO-INTEGRATION]

[WARNING: 'HARDWARE_STRANGULATION' IN PROGRESS]

"Kenji, the universe is 'Going Green,' but not in the way we planned," Mateo said, hacking through a thicket of "Fiber-Optic Ferns" with a pulse-cutter. "The 'Rebirth-Pulse' from Chapter 171 didn't just upgrade the people; it seeded the 'Foundry.' The energy of fourteen billion souls is acting like fertilizer. The Archive's metal is literally being 'Digested' by new life."

Kenji climbed over a rusted girder that was now draped in "Clockwork-Moss." He could feel the pulses of the universe through the soles of his boots. It felt... hungry.

"It's a 'Reclamation-Event'," Kenji said, his violet eyes tracking the way the spores moved in patterns. "The machine-age is over, and the 'Wilderness' is moving back in. But if these vines choke the 'Oxygen-Scrubbers,' the 'Wilderness' is going to kill us all."

[EVENT: THE POLLINATION_STORM]

A massive gust of glowing pollen swept through the sector. It wasn't just dust; it was 'Condensed-Information'. Where the spores landed, things "Changed." A discarded wrench sprouted leaves of copper; a terminal-screen turned into a blooming flower that projected "Weather-Patterns" instead of data.

[THREAT IDENTIFIED: THE OVERGROWTH_HIVE]

At the center of Sector 88, the "Central Processor" had been completely encased in a "Nervous-System-Tree." It wasn't an enemy, but it was a 'Competitor'. It was consuming all the "Shared-Energy" to grow its own flowers, leaving the nearby residential sectors in a "Power-Brownout."

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" a woman from the "Nature-Purists" (Ch 161) said, kneeling before the tree. "It's the world we always wanted. No more 'Code.' Just 'Growth'."

"Growth without 'Gears' is just 'Cancer'!" Kenji shouted, his wrench glowing with a warning light. "If that tree takes the whole 'Processor,' the 'Firewall' (Ch 170) falls. The Scavengers will see a 'Garden' and come for the 'Harvest'!"

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE SELECTIVE_PRUNING]

Kenji stepped toward the tree. He didn't use a "Defoliant." He used his 'Independent Variable'. He touched the glowing bark of the tree, connecting his "Central Node" to its primitive, sprawling "Green-Mind."

"You want to 'Live'?" Kenji's voice vibrated through the leaves. "Then you have to 'Work'! You can't just 'Eat' the universe; you have to 'Be' the 'Cooling-System'!"

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE GRAFTING_LOGIC]

Kenji began to "Graft" the tree's roots into the "Radiator-Valves" (Ch 168). He didn't kill the plant; he 'Technicalized' it. He showed the vines how to carry "Liquid-Coolant" instead of sap. He showed the flowers how to act as "Signal-Repeaters."

"We aren't 'Replacing' the machine with nature," Kenji grunted, his muscles straining as he bent a logic-vine into a socket. "We're building a 'Bio-Mechanical_Symbiosis'! The 'Spore-Protocol' isn't a 'Takeover'... it's a 'Component-Upgrade'!"

[NOTICE: 'BIO-LINK' ESTABLISHED]

[STATUS: SECTOR 88 POWER_GRID STABILIZING VIA 'PHOTOSYNTHESIS']

The tree shivered, its leaves turning from a wild, chaotic green to a structured, rhythmic emerald. The "Strangulation" stopped. The vines began to pulse in sync with the city's heart. The "Central Processor" was now protected by a living, self-healing "Bark-Shield."

[NOTICE: 'SPORATIC_GROWTH' HAS BEEN 'DOMESTICATED']

[STATUS: THE 'GRAND_REPAIR' PHASE FIFTEEN: ECOLOGY]

Kenji sat back, his hands covered in a mixture of black oil and glowing green sap. He looked at his wrench. It had sprouted a tiny, metallic bud near the handle.

"You're becoming a 'Gardener,' Kenji," Priya said, handing him a rag.

"A 'Gardener' is just a 'Mechanic' who works with 'Soft-Parts'," Kenji said, watching the "Logic-Vines" begin to repair a cracked wall. "But the 'Wild' is still out there. We've tamed the 'Garden'... but what about the 'Predators'?"
