Chapter 22 - The Silent Attack

⚔️ Chapter 20:

The academy's courtyard was unusually still. Even the wind seemed to hesitate, frozen as though caught in anticipation. Lanterns hung along the stone archways, their pale Etherlight trembling against the edges of the early night fog. The remnants of the Festival of Veils lingered — scattered paper lanterns bobbing in puddles, their reflections dancing in the shallow rainwater. Kairu Ryoku walked alongside Haruto and Sayuri, each step careful on the slick stones. The air was thick with tension, the memory of last night's celebrations still vivid, but overshadowed by a creeping unease he could not place.

"Something feels off," Kairu murmured, his eyes scanning the shadowed corners of the courtyard. The mark on his palm tingled faintly, the whisper of Raviel coiling within him. [Pay attention, Kairu… danger approaches.]

Haruto's brow furrowed. "You always say that, and it never leads anywhere… until it does."

Sayuri's hand hovered near the Ether sigils etched into her gloves, her instincts alert. "Quiet," she hissed. "Something isn't right."

The silence broke in the subtlest of ways: a ripple through the Ether. The air shimmered, twisting like heat above a sun-baked pavement. Shadows along the walls lengthened unnaturally, stretching and contorting as though reaching for something. Kairu's chest tightened; the pulse in his palm accelerated. [They've come…]

From the distant hallways, a faint, almost imperceptible whisper of movement echoed. The academy was supposed to be sealed, guarded by layers of wards and Ether barriers, yet these intruders slipped through with uncanny ease.

Then, the first spirit appeared. It was small, almost childlike in form, but the distortion around it made it grotesque: limbs elongated, the head swaying unnaturally, eyes too large and too bright. Its mouth opened in a silent scream, and the air around it warped, carrying a low vibration that rattled bones and stirred dust from the walls.

Kairu reacted instantly. Threads of silver Ether flared from his hands, coiling around the spirit like chains. It shrieked without sound, twisting violently, and shattered into motes of pale light.

But it was only the beginning.

From every shadowed corner, more spirits poured out, dozens of them, moving like a living wave. Their forms were warped, each a nightmare of semi-human shapes and glimmering Ether. They filled the courtyard, stretching from the academy gates to the inner halls, a tidal force of energy and malevolence.

"Form up!" Haruto shouted, summoning a gust of wind that sliced through several spirits, scattering them like leaves in a storm. His eyes glowed faintly silver, the Ether of his bond manifesting in visible arcs of wind energy.

Sayuri moved with precision, each gesture releasing small circles of light that erupted upon contact with the spirits, dissipating them into harmless motes. "Kairu! Focus on the core! Don't let them overwhelm you!"

Kairu drew a deep breath, feeling the full weight of Raviel inside him. [Do not hesitate. Strike with purpose, Ryoku.] Threads of Ether erupted from his palms, twisting and lashing through the air, coiling around spirits and pulling them into containment or disintegration. Sparks of energy lit the courtyard like fireworks, reflecting off puddles and the polished stone.

A particularly large spirit lunged at him, a hulking figure with multiple elongated arms and a jagged, mask-like face. Its presence pushed against his mind, whispering doubt, fear, and hunger. Kairu gritted his teeth, summoning every ounce of focus. He flung the Ether threads forward, wrapping them around the spirit. It screamed in a soundless agony as the chains tightened, but it was resilient. Its arm lashed out, knocking Kairu off balance, sending him sliding across the wet stones.

Haruto reacted instantly, wind slicing through the attacking spirit's limbs, giving Kairu just enough time to rise. Sayuri leapt between them, releasing a pulse of concentrated Ether that blasted several smaller spirits away, leaving only a few staggering.

[Pull from the Ether around you…] Raviel urged. [They are feeding on hesitation. Do not falter.]

Kairu's eyes flared silver. He let his awareness expand, feeling every vibration of energy in the courtyard. The spirits' paths became visible as pulsing threads, each one connected to the central mass of the disturbance. With precision, he drew them together like a puppeteer, twisting and binding, isolating the source.

The leader spirit — taller, more grotesque than the others, with eyes glowing like twin moons — surged forward, seeking to overwhelm Kairu directly. He met it head-on, the threads of his Ether spiraling around the intruder. Sparks flew, illuminating the darkened faces of the academy walls and the stunned students watching from the upper balconies. The collision sent a shockwave rippling across the courtyard, knocking over lanterns and scattering the puddles into mist.

With a final push, Kairu tightened the coils, drawing the spirit into a spiraling prison of silver light. It shrieked, a hollow, piercing sound that echoed in every mind present, and then dissolved into shimmering motes. The remaining spirits faltered, confused and leaderless, before dissipating into nothingness.

Silence fell.

Kairu stood panting, chest heaving, his coat torn and damp, sweat mixing with rainwater on his brow. His hands glowed faintly, threads of residual Ether still pulsing from the battle. Haruto clapped a hand on his shoulder, voice strained but relieved. "You… handled that. All of it. I didn't think anyone could."

Sayuri nodded, adjusting her gloves and brushing wet hair from her face. "Yes… but you have to control this. You can't let the Ether lash out like that without purpose. You've got power, Kairu, but it's raw — dangerous if untamed."

The boy lowered his hands, feeling Raviel curl back into him, a whisper of warmth and fire. [Good… but know this, Kairu. This was only the beginning. The threads will call to you again.]

The courtyard smelled of ozone, wet stone, and the faint trace of burnt Ether. Lanterns flickered, and the rain's patter resumed, gentle now, as if nothing had happened. Yet every shadow seemed thicker, every corner darker, every breath heavier.

Somewhere beyond the academy walls, far from the safety of the courtyard, the pulse of Ether drew other eyes — watchers, predators, and those who sought Kairu for their own purposes. The Night Class had tested him, and he had survived, but the battle had only revealed the surface of what was to come.

He looked to Haruto and Sayuri, determination setting his jaw. "We can't let them keep coming. We need to be ready… for whatever's next."

The twin moons of Nirath hung low over the academy, soft silver against the dark sky, a quiet witness to a student who had faced a storm and emerged stronger, though just barely. And far beyond, the city of Velis Sol waited, alive with secrets, danger, and the silent, patient gaze of unseen spirits.
