⚔️ Chapter 23:
The air in the observatory still hummed with threads of residual Ether, vibrating along the glass instruments like faint whispers clinging to the walls. Kairu steadied himself against the pedestal, breath shallow, the aftertaste of the orb's energy lingering on his tongue like cold metal.
Haruto didn't speak at first. He simply watched Kairu with a mixture of caution and awe — the kind reserved for someone standing too close to something dangerous yet necessary.
But before either of them could take another step, the lights in the observatory flickered.
Once.
Then again, longer.
A cold draft swept through the chamber, rustling the parchment maps and causing the chains of suspended Ether-crystals to chime softly. Kairu straightened, eyes narrowing.
[Raviel…?]
[Something approaches.] Raviel's whisper tightened, a low vibration beneath Kairu's ribs. [Hide your aura.]
Kairu obeyed instinctively. He drew in his scent of Ether, dimming the glow beneath his skin until it faded into nothing. Haruto followed suit, stepping back and gripping a scroll tube like a makeshift weapon.
The spiral staircase below them groaned — slow, deliberate, calculated.
Someone was coming up.
The footsteps were too heavy to be students, too composed to be panicked staff. And they carried the faintest metallic echo — armor, but not the academy's.
Kairu's pulse quickened.
"Collectors…?" Haruto whispered.
"No," Kairu murmured. "Too quiet. Too intentional."
The chamber doors swung open.
Standing in the frame were two figures clad in deep slate-blue cloaks, trimmed with rigid geometric patterns that glowed faintly at the seams. Their uniforms weren't from the academy or the Collector Corps.
They were from the Internal Tribunal — the academy's shadow division, rarely seen, often feared. Their masks were blank plates of brushed silver, featureless except for narrow T-shaped visors.
The first one stepped forward, posture stiff with authority.
"Kairu Ryoku," the voice behind the mask spoke — calm, precise, utterly unreadable. "By order of the Tribunal, you are to come with us. Your actions within the observatory have triggered a Category-Four Ether Response. You are to be questioned immediately."
Haruto's jaw clenched. "You can't just appear here without Director Morimoto's clearance. He didn't authorize—"
The second agent moved so fast Kairu barely caught it — a flick of the wrist, a shimmer of blue Ether, and Haruto was frozen in place, bound by chains of condensed light.
Kairu's eyes widened.
[Raviel—]
[Do not strike first.]
The spirit coiled like a blade waiting to be unsheathed. [Assess. Observe. Their Ether is foreign. Sharp. Anomalous.]
The first agent approached, each footstep deliberate. "Kairu Ryoku, your bond reacted with a Veil anomaly beyond acceptable thresholds. You will accompany us to the Tribunal Wing."
"No."
The word left Kairu's mouth harsher than intended.
Both agents turned their masked faces toward him.
"I stabilized the Veil because I had to," Kairu continued, voice trembling but firm. "If I didn't, half the northern district could've collapsed. I won't be dragged somewhere without reason."
A tense silence.
Then—
A strange sound echoed through the chamber — a deep, resonant hum like an awakened heartbeat.
The orb.
It pulsed again.
But this time… not from instability.
It pulsed in response to Kairu himself, the silver threads gently lifting from its surface and drifting toward him, like a living thing seeking its tether.
The agents stiffened.
"That reaction…" the first whispered. "It's impossible without a Level-Three Synchronization."
The second stepped back. "He shouldn't be capable. He's still an Initiate—"
The orb pulsed again. A low rumble vibrated through the observatory, shaking dust from the rafters. Maps fluttered. Etherglass cracked. The lights dimmed into a single spotlight on Kairu.
Haruto strained against the restraints, panic breaking through his composure.
"Kairu—!!"
Raviel surged.
A silver flare erupted around Kairu, tendrils spiraling outward in jagged arcs. The chamber shuddered. The agents braced themselves, armor whirring as hidden mechanisms activated.
Then — as quickly as it flared — the glow collapsed inward, shrinking back into Kairu's chest with a sharp, burning pull.
He gasped, clutching his ribs.
The orb dimmed.
Silence fell.
The first agent stepped forward again, rigid and cautious.
"…This confirms it. The boy's resonance is unstable — and potentially catastrophic. He must be contained until a full analysis can be performed."
Kairu's head snapped up. "Contained?!"
The agent raised a hand.
Chains of blue Ether materialized from their palm.
Raviel roared within him. [Move!]
Kairu spun just as the first chain lashed toward him, slicing through the air with a crack. He dove aside, sliding across the polished obsidian floor. Sparks scattered from the impact behind him.
Haruto shouted, still bound. "Kairu, don't fight them—"
"I'm not letting them lock me up!"
The chains struck again — two from the left, another from the right. Kairu ducked, rolled, scrambled, his senses burning from coordinated attacks. The agents were trained — they moved like shadows, steps synchronized, strikes calculated.
One chain grazed his arm — burning cold like ice.
Kairu hissed, teeth clenched. [Raviel—!]
[Just say it.]
The spirit's hunger simmered. [Let me loose.]
Kairu exhaled shakily.
"No. Not yet."
He dodged a final strike — then planted his foot, channeled a controlled burst of Raviel's energy, and flung a blast of silver light at the floor.
Smoke exploded upward.
The chamber filled with thick vapor, clouding the agents' view. Kairu sprinted past them, grabbing Haruto by the wrist as he skidded toward the stairs.
"Come on!!"
The agents shouted behind them. Ether flared. Footsteps thundered.
Kairu and Haruto bolted down the spiral staircase, choosing speed over stealth. Their shadows twisted along the stone walls, flickering in the dim torchlight.
At the bottom of the stairwell, Haruto finally caught his breath.
"Kairu… where are we going?!"
Kairu looked at him, chest heaving, eyes blazing.
"Somewhere they won't follow."
"Where?!"
Kairu swallowed hard.
"The only place the Tribunal won't step foot into."
He clenched his fist.
"The Raviel Chamber."
The spirit inside him purred with a dangerous satisfaction.
[Good choice.]
