Chapter 24 - The Moon’s Tear

⚔️ Chapter 22:

The academy's observatory loomed above the northern wing, a cylindrical tower of dark stone topped with a lattice of Etherglass. It caught the twin moons' light, refracting it into muted beams that sliced through the mist like spectral fingers. Kairu Ryoku climbed the spiral staircase, each step resonating faintly underfoot, carrying the weight of exhaustion and anticipation. The events of Seal Protocol Zero still hummed through his veins, Raviel coiled within him like a living flame, urging vigilance.

"Be careful," Ren's voice echoed from below, tense but calm. "The wards in the observatory are delicate — any misstep and the energy could cascade."

Kairu nodded without answering. His eyes scanned the narrow windows, watching the Etherlight ripple across the city streets, tracing the canals and towers in silvery arcs. The faint glow of distant Veil fractures pulsed in the horizon, barely perceptible, but enough to make his chest tighten. [I feel them…] Raviel whispered, [The imbalance is close.]

At the top, the observatory opened into a vast circular chamber, lined with Ether lenses, maps, and crystalline instruments. The floor was polished obsidian, reflecting the muted moons in fractured patterns, and the air shimmered faintly with residual energy from centuries of observation.

Haruto was already there, adjusting the lenses. "Kairu," he said without looking up, "you have to see this." He gestured toward a large Ether projection at the center of the room. It hovered above a pedestal, a swirling orb of silver light that seemed to pulse with consciousness. The projection depicted the city, layered with faint spirals of energy that traced the hidden currents of Ether throughout Velis Sol.

"Something's wrong," Kairu muttered, stepping closer. The orb pulsed violently as he approached, silver threads reaching outward, writhing like spectral tendrils. [It cries for attention…] Raviel's voice curled inside him, anxious and urgent.

Haruto's hands moved swiftly, calibrating the instruments. "The fracture… it's widening. The Veil above the northern sector — it's destabilizing. We've never seen it this active."

Kairu's heart thumped. The Veil was supposed to be stable here. Yet now, the orb's pulse quickened, mirroring the rhythm of his own bond. He reached out, extending his palm toward the swirling energy. Silver threads of Ether flared, intertwining with the orb's light, coiling around it like binding chains.

"Be careful, Kairu!" Haruto shouted, stepping back. "Too much interference could rupture the projection — the energy is volatile!"

Kairu exhaled sharply, forcing his panic into focus. [Let me guide…] Raviel whispered. [The orb responds to intent, not strength. Touch carefully, not recklessly.]

He let the threads of his bond flow gently, weaving through the orb's spiraling light. The pulsing slowed, responding to his direction, aligning with his internal rhythm. The Ether around him shimmered, warm and cold at once, alive and aware.

Then, from within the orb, a shape formed — a humanoid figure, luminous yet fragmented, with eyes like liquid silver. Kairu froze. The figure reached a hand toward him, its motion deliberate and mournful. [Kairu…] it spoke, not aloud, but through the threads that connected him to Raviel. [You must understand…]

Raviel shifted inside him, coiling tighter. [Do not be deceived by its appearance. It carries power… and intent that mirrors danger.]

The figure's form shimmered, its hand flickering in and out of focus. "The balance… it falters. The Tear grows. Only one tethered by the blood of sacrifice can stabilize it," the voice whispered through the Ether threads, each syllable echoing in Kairu's mind.

Kairu's breath caught. The mark on his palm burned brighter, a tangible pulse of recognition. He realized — the projection was showing him a path, a way to mend the fracture, but the cost was unimaginable. Every thread of his bond with Raviel tightened, urging action, yet warning him of the peril.

Haruto stepped closer, voice low and urgent. "Kairu… it's reacting to you. Whatever you do, you'll have to synchronize completely — body, mind, and bond. Otherwise, the fracture will worsen."

Silver threads spiraled from Kairu's palm, reaching into the orb like bridges of light. He focused, letting Raviel guide the flow, pulling the fragmented figure toward harmony. The chamber pulsed with energy, Ether flaring along the walls, tracing intricate patterns that had been dormant for centuries.

The figure's eyes met Kairu's — fathomless, sorrowful, and demanding. [Stabilize… or fall…] Raviel's whisper intertwined with the figure's presence, merging guidance with caution.

With a deep, steadying breath, Kairu extended the final threads, connecting fully to the orb. Light flared, blinding in intensity, and the chamber shuddered as the fractured Veil responded. The orb's pulses synchronized with his heartbeat, the figure solidifying into a stable form of energy, finally held in alignment by his bond.

Kairu stumbled back, sweat dripping down his face, chest heaving. The orb's light dimmed to a calm, steady glow, the northern sector's Veil now temporarily stable. The threads of Ether lingered faintly in the chamber, shimmering as though acknowledging his effort.

Haruto exhaled, placing a hand on Kairu's shoulder. "You did it… but this… this is just the beginning. There's more coming, Kairu. More tests, more fractures, more… choices."

Kairu nodded slowly, his gaze fixed on the stabilized orb. He knew the burden of his bond had grown heavier. Raviel pulsed gently beneath his skin, a comforting warmth after the storm of energy. [This is only the first step, Kairu…]

Above, the Etherlight of Velis Sol shifted subtly, reflecting the tenuous balance that had just been restored, a fragile calm before the next inevitable storm.
