"Huh…"
The soft sound escaped Kaija before she could stop it.
So that was why.
That was why Charles had disliked the song she sang for him the last time.
Not because the song itself was unpleasant.
But because it had struck somewhere too close.
"All right then, I get it," Kaija murmured.
Her gaze drifted upward toward the ceiling as though the lyrics were written somewhere above them, suspended in the warm amber light of the apartment.
"If you don't like this one either," she added quietly, "then I'm afraid my taste just isn't your taste."
The last mouthful of wine disappeared down her throat.
Warmth spread slowly through her chest.
Her fingers tightened lightly around the stem of the glass while she drew in a long breath.
Then she sang.
Whenever I need you, you're out of touch.
The words you're telling me, they're rough.
No matter how many times I've tried to be tough.
I'll never be good enough.
The room seemed to change around her voice.
