Chapter 338: The Second Half
On the opposite side, Kenji's status was vastly superior. Of the three Pokémon he had fielded—Bellossom, Ninetales, and Arbok—only Ninetales had taken heavy damage from Mega Garchomp's desperate assault.
Bellossom and Arbok, despite some stamina depletion, were still very much ready for more.
Looking at the current state of the scoreboard, Hu Ren could see no path to victory. The mountain he had to climb felt vertical.
But even with the odds stacked against him, he didn't spiral into despair. Instead, he used the thirty-minute intermission to meditate, resetting his mental state and purging the frustration of the first half.
When the half-hour mark passed and the two trainers returned to the stage, the arena—which had been a landscape of craters and broken stone—had been perfectly restored to its pristine starting state.
Hu Ren's gaze was now calm, cold, and analytical. He had detached himself from the outcome of the match, no longer worrying about the win or the loss. He was only focused on the battle itself.
"Battle... Begin!!!"
"Go!! Tyranitar!!"
"Go!! Gliscor!!!"
Two streaks of red light hit the field.
On Kenji's side, the "Tyrant of the Desert" returned. On the other side, Hu Ren sent out a Pokémon that combined the features of a scorpion and a bat.
It was blue and purple with massive, pincer-like claws and a jagged, stinger-tipped tail. Its yellow eyes were sharp and predatory.
[Gliscor]
Gender: Male
Level: 90 (Champion)
Type: Ground / Flying
Ability: Sand Veil (Boosts evasion in a sandstorm.)
Potential: S-
Kenji was mildly surprised. He had expected Hu Ren to lead with his second weather setter—his own Tyranitar.
That had indeed been Hu Ren's original plan. But after analyzing Kenji's patterns, he correctly gambled that Kenji would lead the second half with his giant. He chose Gliscor specifically to counter the behemoth's size with mobility.
Under the influence of Sand Veil, Gliscor would be nearly impossible to pin down in the dunes. It was Hu Ren's best bet for taking down the titan.
"Rock Slide... on yourself!!!"
"Hnn!!! —"
Kenji's command echoed through the stadium. For a moment, the cheering stopped. The audience sat in stunned silence, some even checking their hearing.
Did he just tell his own Pokémon to attack itself?
But Tyranitar didn't hesitate for a second. It didn't doubt Kenji. It immediately summoned a flurry of boulders directly over its own head.
Of course, Tyranitar wasn't stupid. It held back, keeping the impact force minimal.
BAM! BAM! BAM! —
Boulder after boulder smashed into Tyranitar's iron-hard hide.
Hu Ren's brow furrowed. He had no idea what Kenji was doing. Pokémon could damage themselves, but unless a trainer had completely lost their mind, they never ordered it.
But Kenji knew exactly what he was doing. This was the fastest way to stack the "passive" of his legendary gear.
[Radiant Titan's Resolve]
Basic Stats: Attack +20, Defense +20
Special Effect: Increases the wearer's size by 25% of their original form.
Unique Stacking: Every time the wearer takes damage or deals damage, they gain 10 Special Attack and 10 Attack. This effect can stack up to 10 times. At maximum stacks, the wearer gains an additional 50 Defense and 50 Special Defense, and becomes completely immune to status conditions (Poison, Paralysis, Freeze, etc.) for the remainder of the battle.
By the time the last rock fell, the triple-stacked Titan's Resolve was fully "charged."
Each of the three Radiant items provided Kenji's giant with +100 Special Attack, +120 Attack, +70 Defense, and +50 Special Defense.
That was a total of +340 points added to its already massive base stats.
Kenji's Tyranitar was now a walking god of destruction. The self-inflicted Rock Slide had barely even scratched its health bar; it was like throwing pebbles at a tank.
But more important than the stats was the final effect: Status Immunity.
Kenji had predicted Hu Ren's Gliscor would try to play a "dirty" stall game using Toxic. Now, that strategy was dead before it even started.
Sure enough, Hu Ren's next command confirmed Kenji's read.
"Gliscor!! Use Toxic!!"
Hu Ren was playing for the long game, aiming to put the giant on a clock.
"Xie!!! —"
Gliscor glided through the air, whipping its tail. A glob of concentrated, deadly venom shot toward Tyranitar, hitting it square in the chest.
Tyranitar didn't even flinch. The poison hit its skin and simply slid off, neutralized by the golden aura of the Radiant items.
"Rock Tomb!!"
THUD! THUD! THUD!!! —
Tyranitar reached out and "pulled" at the earth. Massive slabs of rock erupted from the sand, hurtling toward Gliscor.
Under the cover of the sandstorm, Gliscor's Sand Veil made its silhouette flicker and blur. It dodged the boulders with supernatural ease, weaving through the stone pillars.
"Xie!!! —"
Gliscor closed the distance, diving toward Tyranitar's massive legs. It raised its pincers, which glowed with the energy of a Fighting-type strike.
Brick Break!!!
"Right leg! Partial Iron Defense!!"
BANG!!! —
