Chapter 34 - Flight in the Void

The gunship glided past the upper atmosphere of Kharvoss, its engines whispering like a predator's breath against the void. The stars burned sharp and bright, the planet's jagged ridges fading into shadow as the defense grid flickered overhead, an invisible net of sensors, turrets, and patrol routes.

Inside the cockpit, Ryn sat steady at the controls, his gaze fixed ahead, one hand on the throttle, the other adjusting minor pitch corrections. Ragnir sat behind him, the faint hum of servos in his augmented limbs blending with the low vibration of the hull.

The silence of space shattered as a voice crackled through the comms.

[Comms]: "Unidentified vessel, this is the Mor-Khalis defense grid. You are entering a restricted flight corridor. State identification and purpose."

Ryn leaned forward, pressing the comms switch with calm precision. His voice was even, professional, carrying the weight of rank.

"This is Captain Ryn Thalos, identification tag Delta-Seven-Four-Nine. Purpose of flight, systems test of newly restored gunship."

There was a pause, static filling the line before the reply came.

[Comms]: "…Captain Ryn?" The voice shifted, a hint of recognition breaking through the formality. "So it's you. I've read your reports. Heard the chatter from Command, your squad keeps pulling off miracles."

A second's pause, then a short, amused chuckle filtered through the comms.

"You're getting famous, Captain. But you should know, that ship of yours doesn't have an identification number on our registry. You'll need to get her one if you plan to keep flying outside the grid."

Ryn's lips curved faintly, the closest thing to a smile in the moment. "Acknowledged, Captain. I'll file the request. For now, we'll circle the Kharvoss grid and run diagnostics."

[Comms]: "Copy that. Keep your transponder active while inside the defense net. We'll mark you as friendly. Don't push too far beyond the perimeter without clearance."

The comms clicked silent, leaving only the soft hum of the engines.

Ragnir leaned forward slightly, his new ocular implant catching the faint glow of starlight. "They knew you."

Ryn didn't look back, hands steady on the controls. "Word travels. Success has a way of putting a mark on you."

The ship banked smoothly, arching around the glittering strands of the defense grid. Sensors flickered across the canopy, mapping out their path. The frigate that had hailed them, a gray Mor-Khalis vessel with glowing thrusters, shifted course to shadow them briefly, like a watchful guardian.

"Diagnostics steady," Ryn murmured, his eyes sweeping across the panels. "Engines stable. Hull integrity good. Flight systems running smooth."

Ragnir grunted in approval, arms folded, but his grin betrayed the thrill of flight. "Feels like she belongs to the void already."

Ryn tapped a sequence into the console, his voice steady. "Time to test the FLT drive. Marked system boundary, vector eight-five by three-two. Engaging FLT coil at ten percent output."

The ship shuddered as the coils spooled, vibrations rolling through the hull like a beast awakening. Lights rippled across the panels, the hum of the engines shifting to a low, resonant growl.

[EP-Psi]: "Flux alignment stable. All readings within safety parameters. Drive integrity confirmed."

"Hold steady," Ryn muttered, adjusting the throttle. "Ragnir, feel that? She wants to run."

Ragnir grinned, eyes glinting with faint blue light. "Then let her."

With a surge of power, the void bent around them. Stars stretched into long silver lines as the gunship slipped into FLT Travel, Field-Loop Transphase, the hum becoming a steady, bone-deep thrum. The ship cut clean through the dark, each second carrying them farther from the safety of the grid.

Moments later, alarms pinged across the console.

[EP-Psi]: "Unregistered contacts detected. Bearing forty-seven by twelve. Multiple signatures, combat exchange in progress."

Ryn disengaged the FLT coils, dropping the ship back into realspace. Before them, the void burned with light, streaks of weapons fire slashing across the black. An asteroid base clung to the edge of a rocky field, its defense turrets firing desperately. Around it swarmed ships, brutal silhouettes marked with jagged paint and the crude sigils of orc raiders.

Ragnir's hands clenched the edge of his seat, his voice low with a growl. "Orcs."

Ryn's eyes narrowed, sensors tracking the battle. His hand hovered over the weapons console, but his tone remained calm. "Seems the void just gave us our first test."

The void shimmered with weapons fire. Orc raider craft swarmed the asteroid base like carrion birds, their plasma cannons tearing at failing shields. Each impact lit the rocks in orange flares, fragments scattering into the abyss.

Ryn's gunship tore from FLT, sensors immediately shrieking hostile signatures. The HUD flared red with enemy markers.

[EP-Psi]: "Twelve hostiles. Skiffs circling fast, two gunboats pinning blockade. Boarding craft en route. Base shields at twenty-seven percent."

Calm, steady, Ryn spoke into the comms. "This is Captain Ryn, Spec Ops ID MHK-1172. We've intercepted a raid on the defense grid perimeter. Patch me through to the nearest command frigate."

Static cleared, a voice cut sharp through the channel. "This is Captain Vorrenn of the frigate Iron Talon. Identification confirmed, Ryn. You're out here testing a gunship?"

"Correct. Testing," Ryn said flatly, fingers never leaving the controls as he slid the gunship under a volley of green plasma. "But testing under fire suits me fine. I need reinforcements on my mark. Requesting one Vulture-class corvette and a squadron of Buzzards. Coordinates uploading."

[EP-Psi]: "Coordinates transmitted."

Vorrenn's chuckle was brief, grim. "Copy that, Captain. We'll scramble a strike team. Hold the line until we arrive."

"Always do," Ryn muttered, eyes narrowing.

Then his voice snapped sharp to his pack:

"Ragnir, top guns. Tear their skiffs apart."

Ragnir was already in motion, cybernetic limbs locking into the turret harness. Targeting overlays flickered alive across his vision as Fenrir's cold voice joined him.

[Fenrir]: "Connection complete. Hunt begins."

"RE-001," Ryn continued. "Bottom guns. Suppress those boarding craft before they breach."

[RE-001]: "Affirmative, Captain. Turrets locked."

"EP-Psi, predictive overlays, feed firing windows. Everyone moves on my timing."

[EP-Psi]: "Combat net synchronized. Pack formation engaged."

For a breath, the gunship was still, engines humming like a beast tensed to strike. Then Ryn's voice broke the silence.

"Move."

The ship lunged forward, thrusters screaming. Enemy sensors lit, green bolts lancing toward them. Ryn rolled low under the barrage, asteroids scattering shadows across the canopy.

"Ragnir, now!"

The top guns thundered. A skiff disintegrated into molten shards, tumbling through void. Fenrir's calm overlays guided his next strikes; Ragnir grinned, teeth bared as two more skiffs lit up in rapid succession.

Below, RE-001's cannons hammered, tearing the side from a boarding craft. Its engines sputtered, spinning out of control. "Target suppressed," the AI reported, voice cool.

[EP-Psi]: "Two gunboats repositioning. They will pin us in twelve seconds."

"Not today." Ryn yanked the ship into a dive, weaving between tumbling rock. Plasma fire raked stone, carving useless craters. He punched the thrusters, the ship roaring upward behind the gunboats.

"Ragnir, engines!"

Twin beams cored through the drives, both vessels venting fire. One exploded outright, the other spun helplessly toward asteroid gravity.

[RE-001]: "Second boarding craft approaching. Impact window: eight seconds."

"Jam their coordination," Ryn ordered.

[EP-Psi]: "Intrusion active. Orc comm-net disrupted. Hostiles disoriented."

On the raider channels, static erupted. Orders garbled, ships faltered, volleys went wide.

"Perfect," Ryn hissed. He flipped the ship, dove back into the melee. "Press them. Pack strikes as one."

The gunship carved through the void, turrets blazing in synchronicity. Ragnir and Fenrir cut down skiffs in arcs of fire, RE-001 shredded the boarding craft, and Ryn steered with predatory precision.

Above it all, the voice of Captain Vorrenn crackled back in, taut with urgency. "Vulture corvette and Buzzard squadron inbound, two minutes. Hold them, Ryn."

Ryn's reply was cold, unshaken, as his pack tore through another wave of raiders. "We'll give you something to mop up, Captain. Wolves already have their teeth in the prey."

The void lit with fire, the hunt in full cry.

Two minutes later, the darkness trembled. A sharp flare of drive signatures split the horizon, the Vulture Corvette Iron Fang dropping from FLT Travel, Field-Loop Transphase, like a predator entering the fray, its angular hull bristling with batteries. Alongside it, twelve Buzzard fighters unfolded their wings, forming a deadly wedge.

"Reinforcements on field," Vorrenn's voice snapped. "Captian Ryn, give the order."

Ryn's lips curved into the faintest of smiles. "All ships, data upload complete. Corvette, drive straight through their center line and break their formation. Buzzard squadron, sweep wide and cut off retreat vectors. Prioritize gunboats, then skiffs. Target markers are live, firing windows are synced. Move."

The Vulture's heavy cannons spat lances of white fire, tearing straight through the last intact orc gunboat. It ruptured in a violent blossom of flame, scattering twisted hull across the belt.

Buzzards screamed into the skirmish, engines flaring blue, tearing into skiffs with disciplined strafing runs. Ragnir's turret fire merged with their assault, crosshatching the void with deadly precision. Each kill was clean, timed, efficient, a predator's bite guided by pack instinct.

[EP-Psi]: "Orc formation breaking. Four skiffs retreating. Suggest coordinated pursuit."

Ryn's eyes narrowed. "Buzzards, herd them into the open. Ragnir, burn their tails when they run."

The fighters dove, harrying the skiffs into a tight cluster. Ragnir's guns roared, shredding one, crippling another. RE-001 finished the third with a brutal cannon strike, while the last fled too far and detonated under the Vulture's broadside.

Silence followed, broken only by the fading hum of debris fields drifting. The asteroid base flickered weakly, shields still barely holding. The raiders were gone.

Ryn finally eased his grip on the controls, breathing out slow. "That's it. Engagement complete."

On the comms, Captain Vorrenn's tone carried rare respect. "Well flown, Captain. Precise coordination and clean execution. We'll secure the base from here."

Ryn cut the channel, gaze steady on the stars. His ship drifted among burning wreckage, the hum of the engines a low growl beneath the silence of victory.

[EP-Psi]: "Assessment: cooperation with allied pack successful. No critical damage sustained. Cybernetic systems in Ragnir operating within optimized thresholds."

Ryn leaned back, exhaustion edged by satisfaction. "Good. Then we're ready for what comes next."

The void was quiet again, but it carried the weight of a promise. This was only the first hunt.

A comm-link flickered to life, the emblem of the asteroid base command filling the corner of Ryn's display. The voice that followed was strained, but full of gratitude.

"Captain Ryn, this is Commander Halvek of Station Oran-9. You saved us from annihilation. My people, my miners, owe you their lives."

Ryn's tone was calm, clipped, the voice of a soldier already looking ahead.

"No debt. But listen carefully. You need to register your base with Mor-Khalis on Kharvoss. Once you're listed, the defense grid will schedule regular patrols through your sector. Orc marauders and human pirate bands hunt these lanes, and without registration, you're on your own. When you file, you'll also be given a direct comm link and an emergency beacon. Use it, and help will come. Mor-Khalis is fair to its citizens. Once you're recognized, you'll have the right to trade freely and keep whatever ore you pull from these fields."

There was a pause, then Halvek's reply came firm.

"Understood, Captain. We'll file with Kharvoss by cycle's end. And… thank you again."

Ryn cut the channel. The stars stretched endless before him, the gunship drifting steady among the wreckage.

[EP-Psi]: "Awaiting new directives."

Ryn rested his hands on the controls, eyes narrowing at the dark horizon.
