Chapter 38 - Return to Kharvoss

The gunship hummed steadily through the upper atmosphere of Kharvoss, engines warm and responsive from the long escort mission. Ryn's hands rested lightly on the console, eyes scanning both the tactile displays and the streams of neon-coded logistics that tracked the fleet's approach. The mission had been clean, the trading convoy reached its destination intact, and no stray pirates or rogue elements had dared challenge their path.

The newsfeed pinged intermittently, filtered through the ship's secure channels. Traders and colonies from the distant trading hub were already reaching out, signaling interest in joining the new mining ventures on Kharvoss. Names and guild associations scrolled across Ryn's interface, tagged with priority markers, resource allocations, and credentials.

Ryn leaned back, fingers dancing over the interface to log each new entry. "These will need to go to Commander Thrys," he murmured to himself. The names, the mining guilds, the trade interests, all carefully organized for evaluation. "Selection will be deliberate. Mor-Khalis citizens take priority, as always."

Beyond the cockpit, the settlement of Kharvoss rose from the surface like a promise of new opportunity. Mining rigs dotted the landscape, and orbital beacons marked shipping lanes for the incoming trade fleets. Plans for a proper trading port were already forming in the minds of the administrators, docking facilities, storage depots, and protective patrol routes.

Requests for escorts or patrol services could be submitted directly to the Mor-Khalis military, with fees allocated to support ongoing fleet readiness. Ryn scrolled through the latest messages, noting patterns in trade requests. Some colonies specialized in rare ores, others in ship repair and logistics. A handful of experienced crews had connections to Mor-Khalis veterans, these would be flagged for priority consideration.

A soft chime indicated the approach to the designated drop point. Ryn initiated a series of docking protocols, guiding the convoy carefully toward the awaiting stations. The air was thick with anticipation; the first wave of settlers and merchants would establish the foundation for future expansion, and the Mor-Khalis fleet's presence ensured the endeavor remained secure.

"Ryn," Ragnir's voice broke through the quiet hum of the cockpit, "these colonies, they're serious. Some of them are sending full crew rosters, equipment manifests, even preliminary contracts. You've got your work cut out for you."

"I know," Ryn replied, not taking his eyes from the interface. "Commander Thrys will review the logs and select accordingly. Our priority is stability, resource allocation, and security. The rest will follow in waves. Mor-Khalis citizens always come first."

The gunship eased into the docking bay, engines winding down as magnetic clamps engaged. Around them, the trading port was alive with activity. Cargo was being unloaded, drones buzzed in formation, and merchants negotiated contracts in the open plazas. Ryn made a final sweep of the logs, double-checking the priority entries, the fees assigned for patrols, and the notes for military escorts.

"All ready," he said finally, stretching tired fingers. "Commander Thrys will have what they need to make the first selections."

Ragnir leaned back, watching the hustle with satisfaction. "Another clean operation. The colonies get what they want, and the fleet keeps control. Mor-Khalis doesn't lose."

Ryn allowed himself a brief nod, eyes already flicking to the next set of tasks. Trade coordination, military oversight, colony integration, the work never ended, and the balance of fire, steel, and code demanded constant attention.

But for now, Kharvoss had welcomed its first wave of settlers, and the future was being built, one log entry, one escort, one patrol at a time. Outside, the sun set over the jagged terrain, casting long shadows across the nascent city. Ships came and went, merchants negotiated, and somewhere in the crowd, plans were already forming for the next mining operation. The balance held, for now, but the universe was always ready to test those who maintained it.

At the docking bay, Ryn stood with Commander Thrys, the overall commander of Kharvoss, and Commander Korrath. The two officers exchanged curt nods as the transport descended, its landing clamps securing it with quiet precision. From the ship, the old man, Ryn's benefactor before he joined the Mor-Khalis spec-op units, and now the planet's leader, disembarked. His presence carried authority; traders paused, guards straightened, and colonists murmured in recognition.

Ryn stepped forward. "Welcome to Kharvoss, sir."

Commander Thrys inclined his head respectfully. "Good to see you, sir. Everything is running smoothly here, the colonies, patrols, and mining operations are all on schedule."

The old man's eyes swept the port, taking in the activity with measured scrutiny. "I see. Impressive work," he said. "I want a private discussion, Commander Korrath will join, but the rest will step aside."

In the quiet of the port office, Ryn, the old man, and Commander Korrath stood over the data logs of new colonies, mining guilds, and proposed patrol routes. The old man's gaze settled on Ryn. "I've been reviewing your recent work. Your efficiency, discretion, and judgment are exemplary. I intend to assume your operational role on some of the larger strategic matters here on Kharvoss. You will have another mission. One requiring your particular talents, away from the eye of the public."

Ryn's brow furrowed slightly, but he remained calm. "Understood, sir. Details?"

"Not yet," the old man said, his tone measured, almost teasing. "It will involve both precision and subtlety, something only you can accomplish. Commander Korrath will coordinate logistics, but the fieldwork will be yours."

Commander Korrath nodded. "Understood, sir. We'll prepare the resources. Ryn, your team will need access to specialized transport and intel. Nothing will be left to chance."

The old man turned to Commander Korrath. "I will leave the operational files and priorities in your hands. Ensure Ryn has everything he needs, then step aside."

Korrath saluted and nodded. "Understood, sir," and left the room, closing the door softly behind him.

The old man then focused solely on Ryn. "There is a delicate matter that requires your particular skills. A warlord named Tharvek Soryn, operating from the mining colony of Virel Prime, has become a threat to Mor-Khalis interests. I am assigning you a covert mission: eliminate him."

Ryn's jaw tightened, but he remained composed.

"You will assemble a small team," the old man continued. "You may select from the spec-op units under your command or hire trusted operatives from the mercenary guild. Discretion and precision are paramount. The operation must leave no trace linking back to Mor-Khalis."

Ryn inclined his head. "Understood. I'll choose the team carefully and plan the operation down to the last detail."

The old man nodded once, eyes sharp. "Keep this matter off all external channels. Kharvoss must remain stable while you act. Success is not optional."

Ryn turned to the data logs, already reviewing potential personnel, coordinating resources, and noting strategic intel. Outside, the sun set behind jagged terrain, casting long shadows across the port. The planet was alive, trading hubs bustling, patrols moving on schedule, and yet, a new, lethal mission waited, one that would test Ryn's skill, judgment, and discretion to their absolute limits.
