Chapter 1 - The Night of Neon and Blood

Twenty figures slipped through the shadows surrounding the compound, their presence barely more than whispers in the darkness. Handpicked by NorexCorp for precision, lethality, and unerring discipline, each operative moved with a grace that suggested the body was an extension of the mind. Their black stealth-material armor absorbed the dim ambient light, suppressed heat signatures, and eluded the scanning protocols of standard AI sensors. Every footfall was deliberate, calculated, a part of a collective organism acting as one.

The heads-up displays within each helmet pulsed with quiet precision, streaming thermal scans, vibration readings, motion trajectories, and predictive analyses of potential threats. The strike team's tactical AI, T-47, overlaid vulnerabilities, suggested optimal firing sequences, and coordinated synchronized paths to minimize crossfire.

[T-47]: Target grid confirmed. Multiple human signatures detected. Entry point pressure unknown. Breach at entry point. Neutralize all personnel. Execute with maximum efficiency.

Operators adjusted with near-perfect timing. The lead scout's boots brushed over hidden ground sensors, while T-47 manipulated heat readings to craft a deceptive trail. Every movement was anticipated, measured, and accounted for. Their silent advance was near flawless, until a faint anomaly betrayed them: a pressure plate embedded beneath the entryway floor.

The first step triggered it. T-47 responded instantly.

[T-47]: Acoustic sensors triggered. All personnel in compound are hostile. Breach now.

Alarms roared within the compound, echoing off stone walls and bouncing metallically, each chime a warning of imminent death. T-47 projected tactical overlays directly into the operators' vision, highlighting zones of potential cover, mapping lines of fire, and predicting defensive positions with eerie accuracy.

Inside, dinner lay arranged on a polished table, portions precise, the family eating with mechanical routine. The low hum of aging machinery was the only sound to betray the quiet normalcy. That normalcy shattered with the sudden chime of the alarms.

Daren Thalos's eyes narrowed, and without hesitation, his hand went to the wall rack, fingers closing around the carbine. It was a relic from the Old War, meticulously maintained; its edges polished and grip smoothed by years of care. In his hands, it was not merely a weapon, it was an extension of his will, a promise of survival.

Selara Morvayne moved beside him, her apron and domestic trappings dissolving instantly into the fluid, lethal precision of a trained blade specialist. Pistols checked, knives sheathed within easy reach, stance low and defensive. Every breath measured, every joint prepared for sudden motion.

Ryn scrambled, hauling go-bags from storage and filling them with medkits, ammunition, and tunnel tools, each movement rehearsed countless times. Drills that had seemed harsh and repetitive were now survival instincts, encoded into muscle memory and reflex. He snapped on the black leather bracer given to him by his mother, its worn surface a silent reassurance.

The first contractors breached the doorway. Plasma spat across the room in jagged streaks of neon-blue light, burning composite armor and scorching walls. Sparks flared where bolts struck exposed wiring or metal, fracturing the air with jagged arcs. Through the T-47 overlay, operators tracked defensive positions, moving threats, and kill zones with lethal precision.

[T-47]: Engage all targets. Neutralize. Maintain fire discipline for maximum kill probability.

Daren fired in controlled bursts, shoulder braced, sight aligned, every shot designed to disable both human and armor alike. Plasma tore through walls and shattered holo-displays, arcs of energy painting chaotic streaks across the room. Selara moved like a shadow, striking weak points with her dagger, severing servos and frying neural links, incapacitating contractors with silent efficiency. Sparks from severed circuits danced in the smoke-filled air, casting flickering light across the room.

Ryn crouched behind furniture, analyzing each contractor's position, mapping safe routes to the tunnel entrance. Low stance, measured breathing, careful steps honed from years of drills. Every movement precise.

One contractor lunged past Selara's guard. Plasma scorched her sleeve, cutting along her flank. She shoved Ryn aside, voice sharp and urgent.

"Grenade!" Ryn shouted, hurling the device into a narrow corridor where the contractors had clustered. The explosion erupted immediately: fire, smoke, and a concussive shockwave tore through the corridor. Ceiling dust and debris rained down, shards of wood and metal spinning unpredictably. Ryn slammed to the floor, ears ringing, vision streaked with flashes of neon energy. Disorientation clawed at him, chest pressed against the floor by the force of the blast.

Through the chaos, Selara advanced, pulse pistol spitting controlled bursts into the exposed gaps of powered armor. Blood streaked her cheek, sleeve torn, but her stance remained unyielding. Every shot traced luminous streaks that illuminated her path across the battlefield.

Daren took position behind a support beam, firing with calculated precision. When a contractor lunged too close, he slammed the carbine's butt into the man and hammered him with a prybar until the attacker collapsed. Splinters embedded in his palms, yet his grip remained unshaken. Sparks erupted from a broken holo-display, showering the floor with tiny arcs of electricity.

Smoke and sparks thickened the room. Plasma bolts arced with jagged brilliance, drones mapped movements in three dimensions, and instant-hardening foam blocked avenues of approach. The house had become a battlefield of geometry, timing, and unrelenting danger; every misstep could be fatal.

Another contractor attempted a flank through a side corridor. Selara intercepted him, dagger cutting into the seam of powered armor. Sparks erupted, servos burned open, neural feeds failed. The contractor's visor went dark. Blood streaked Selara's arm, but she pressed forward, pulse pistol aimed at the next advancing threat.

Daren continued firing, clearing paths as contractors approached. One lunged too close. The prybar swung again, metal snapping against armor, teeth flying, until the threat fell. Chaos and destruction pressed in from every angle: heat, plasma, smoke, and the acrid smell of fried electronics filled the room.

Another grenade detonated in an adjacent chamber, the shockwave knocking contractors off balance and raining dust into the air. Ryn's ears rang, vision blurred, smoke filling his lungs. He coughed and pressed on toward the tunnel, determined to survive.

Alarms blared, sirens overlapped with mechanical wails, and new NorexCorp operators converged from flanking corridors. Red emergency lights painted the walls and floors as T-47 continuously updated their positions and predicted trajectories. The Thalos family faced unrelenting pressure, yet each action was precise, a single outcome in mind: survival.

Selara grabbed Ryn's shoulder, shaking him sharply. "Move, now!" she barked. He dove without hesitation toward the hatch as the compound erupted into chaos: gunfire, smoke, and the calculated movements of the advancing operators.

Through the hatch, Ryn tumbled into the darkness of the tunnels below. Layers of conduits masked his heat signature, vented air muffled his movement, and every step followed the drills of his youth. Survival had been measured, practiced, and ingrained since his earliest memory.

Behind him, the last images of the compound burned in neon-blue and orange chaos: Daren firing from a support beam, a bulwark against NorexCorp's relentless assault; Selara advancing, wounds visible, but her form unbroken, pulse pistol flaring with precision. Sparks and plasma danced across walls, ceiling, and debris in suspended arcs of fire and light.

Ryn pressed on, crawling through narrow tunnels, clutching the go-bag tightly against his chest. The drills hummed through him, guiding each movement, keeping him alive. Above, the stars stretched cold and indifferent across the sky. The neon glow of Drenn Vale lingered faintly behind him, a burning city now out of reach. He moved forward into the wasteland, shadowed and silent, a boy sharpened into something harder by fire, smoke, and blood.

Barely seconds after he emerged, the tunnel collapsed with a thunderous roar, sealing darkness and chaos behind him. Dust and stone rained down, cutting off any thought of turning back. Alone in the open wasteland, he carried both survival and the weight of all that had been left behind.
