Chapter 526 - Chapter 404

The first scouts reached the plateau before the main coalition had finished dismantling the last monitoring structures behind them, and their reports made it clear that the network ahead had changed scale again. What looked from a distance like several separate fortified positions was actually one broad military installation spread across a plateau, two shallow valleys, and a long central depression where old watercourses had been buried beneath dark formation stone. Four major routes entered from different directions, but none of them stopped at the visible structures guarding their approaches; every conduit continued inward through the ground and disappeared beneath the central region. Haotian followed those relationships through the Dao Palace of the Universe while Xuanyin arranged the reconnaissance maps beside him, and the deeper he looked, the less the complex resembled the relay systems they had already learned to dismantle.

The northern intake occupied the broadest approach, where the old road had been widened into a defensive avenue capable of supporting several large formations at once. West of it, a ridge had been layered with overlapping formation barriers that altered distance, attack angles, and the way pressure entered the stone, making the route difficult to judge even when the defenders remained still. The southern intake sat inside fractured terrain where old streambeds, broken shelves, and buried conduits crossed so frequently that Veridian Prime had already warned against moving large numbers without examining every approach first. The eastern side rose sharply enough that the Abyss had built formation platforms above the intake and tied them into the ground structure through vertical channels, giving its aerial defenders a fortified position instead of open sky.

Xuanyin waited until the scouts had confirmed all four physical intakes before she let the command map settle into a working plan. Two other structures had appeared repeatedly in the pressure records, both positioned closer to the central depression and both reacting whenever burden changed at the outer nodes. Haotian could feel something still deeper beneath them, but the upper system interfered with the spatial relationship enough that he could not yet separate its function cleanly. When one of the Blue Sphere elders asked whether the deeper structure was another relay, Haotian answered that it behaved differently and that naming it before they understood it would not make the problem any easier.

The coalition had learned enough from the previous routes that nobody proposed destroying the first intake they reached. Xuanyin made the objective explicit while the four assault groups were being assembled, telling the commanders that every outer node had to be captured intact unless keeping it intact became more dangerous than abandoning the position altogether. "If you break one under load, the complex will move that burden somewhere else before we know where it is going," she said while one hand remained on the central map. "We need to see the redistribution before we decide what can safely be destroyed."

The Pyrelith commander assigned north listened without complaint, though his expression suggested the instruction still ran against every instinct his martial system had given him. He asked what they should do if the defenders used the intake itself as a shield, and Xuanyin told him to force them away from it rather than solve the inconvenience by reducing the entire platform to molten stone. The man glanced toward Haotian, who added that the first faction to break an overloaded intake would probably spend the rest of the day helping Marephoros and Blue Sphere clean up the consequences. That was enough to make the Pyrelith commander promise patience with considerably more sincerity.

Lianhua took position with the western force, where the layered spatial defenses made her sword cultivation more useful than another frontal powerhouse would have been. The skin across her palm had healed enough that the old injury no longer interfered with her grip, although she still wrapped the hand beneath her glove before taking up her sword. Yueru moved east with the additional Celestara formations assigned to the aerial platforms, while the southern group received more Veridian Prime cultivators than any other front. Tianlan remained with the mobile reserve near the center, his spear resting against one shoulder while the two healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons separated above the plateau to watch different approaches.

The third Falcon remained with the recovery formations well behind the active front, and Tianlan had stopped trying to convince himself that improvement meant readiness. He watched the two healthy birds settle into their wide circles before turning back toward the plateau, where demonic patrols were already shifting in response to the coalition's deployment. Xuanyin told him that she wanted the reserve moving between fronts rather than becoming another assault formation, and Tianlan nodded without argument. "If one intake starts looking more important than the others, I assume that means I should check what the demons are doing somewhere else," he said, and Xuanyin answered that this was a useful habit to keep.

The four assaults began close enough together that the Abyss could not strip one sector to reinforce another before the first contact. Blue Sphere formations maintained communication between the fronts while Celestara observers above the center carried visual information whenever the deeper formation interference caused delays. Haotian remained near Xuanyin during the opening because the complex itself was the problem he needed to understand, not any one defensive line. His attention moved beneath the ground while the legions descended from their staging ridges, following how the four intakes carried pressure toward the two central structures.

The northern defenders attacked first. Their infantry advanced in several disciplined lines behind overlapping shields, using long spears through the gaps while formation cultivators farther back sent measured pulses into the road beneath them. Unlike some of the earlier demonic forces the coalition had faced, they did not commit their entire front into one heavy charge that Marephoros could turn against them. They advanced in shorter steps, struck, withdrew the weapons, and advanced again, forcing the coalition to work for every opening instead of being handed momentum that could simply be redirected.

The Marephoros cultivators changed their response within the first several exchanges. They stopped trying to borrow the full force of individual attacks and began controlling how pressure accumulated across the width of the demonic line, allowing one section of the Blue Sphere front to yield slightly while another held firm. The shield wall bent because its own ranks were no longer advancing at the same pace, and Veridian Prime immediately altered the footing beneath the section that had begun to crowd. When the defenders widened to recover, the Marephoros pair nearest the center used Flowing Current Step to stay with the changing front without being trapped under the next spear line.

Pyrelith still waited behind them. One promising compression point appeared near the center and disappeared before the destructive pair could act, because the demons realized how tightly they had gathered and widened their formation again. A second opening formed several minutes later when Blue Sphere spears forced two shield groups toward the same broken section of road. The local commander saw it developing and told the Pyrelith fighters, "Center only. The intake is behind them, and I still want the road after you are finished."

The first concentrated strike broke the forward shields rather than the ground beneath them. A second entered through the opening before the defenders could rebuild their spacing, and the destructive pressure remained narrow enough that the buried conduits Veridian had already marked were not disturbed. Blue Sphere cultivators advanced through the fractured center while Marephoros redirected the pressure from both sides away from the opening. The demons surrendered several yards of road in good order and established another defensive line rather than allowing themselves to be surrounded.

The western ridge offered no comparable physical line to attack. The first barrier altered distance across the slope, causing ordinary movement to carry less ground than the cultivators expected, while the second changed the approach angle of techniques passing through it. A third formation deeper in the ridge absorbed some of the pressure that reached the defenders and fed it into reinforced stone, allowing the demonic line to withstand attacks that should otherwise have broken through. Lianhua spent several minutes watching the three relationships interact before she allowed the leading teams to move into the first one.

Umbrel scouts had already found a maintenance passage beneath the lowest formation layer, though the route ended inside the narrow space between the first and second barriers. One scout returned to Lianhua under Veil Shroud — Empty Silhouette and told her that the passage could carry a handful of people without activating the larger control formation, but not enough to turn the entire assault into an underground approach. Lianhua looked toward the Blue Sphere formation specialists and asked how many they needed to shut down the first layer from inside. When the answer was two specialists and enough protection to keep them alive, she told the Umbrel scout that they had their group.

The surface assault increased pressure before the infiltration began. Pyrelith attacked defensive formations rather than the barrier itself, while Marephoros kept the distorted footing from pulling the leading Blue Sphere cultivators into poor positions. Lianhua entered the edge of the first layer through Cloud-Sundering Steps, using short transitions whenever the local spatial relationship offered enough stability for one step rather than trying to cross the whole distortion in a single movement. The defenders noticed her immediately, but that was useful as long as they watched her instead of the maintenance entrance below.

A demonic swordsman met her inside the altered distance and tried to exploit the formation by keeping his body farther away than his weapon appeared to be. Lianhua allowed the first exchange to remain entirely physical, catching his blade near the middle and turning it just enough to prevent the cut from settling into her shoulder. Once the line existed between them, Voidpierce Sword Sutra shortened the last part of her return and carried the edge beneath the guard he had positioned according to the formation's false distance. The wound forced him to retreat, but another defender stepped in before Lianhua could press deeper.

The second man had clearly watched the first exchange. He kept his weapon close and refused to extend far enough for the same spatial discrepancy to become useful, forcing Lianhua to rely more heavily on ordinary swordsmanship while the distorted ground worked against her steps. She did not insist on proving Voidpierce could solve every defense; Cloud-Sundering Steps gave her position, the sword did the rest, and the pressure she created kept enough defenders occupied for the Umbrel group to disappear into the lower maintenance passage. By the time the demons realized the infiltration had already begun, the scouts and Blue Sphere specialists were beneath the first barrier.

The southern assault had moved barely a third of the distance covered in the north. Veridian Prime found that several obvious approaches crossed ground whose surface remained intact only because old roots and Abyss conduits held the broken stone together beneath it. A large formation might have crossed one of those paths once, but fighting on it would have brought the shelf down. The southern Blue Sphere commander therefore allowed Veridian to dictate the route even when it narrowed the legion to a fraction of its usual width.

One of the Veridian elders marked a winding path through the fractured valley and told everyone that nothing outside the markers should be trusted under concentrated weight. The commander looked at the route, then at the wider road the demons had conveniently left open farther west, and asked whether the narrower path would hold once the enemy began striking the ground. The elder answered that it would hold longer than the road designed to collapse under them, which ended the discussion. Blue Sphere narrowed its formations and began feeding teams through the safer ground in controlled groups.

The demons attacked the route from above rather than waiting at the intake. Ranged techniques struck the stone ahead of the coalition, breaking loose sections that Veridian had already identified as weak and trying to force the formation toward the wider western road. The Veridian cultivators did not attempt to preserve every piece of the valley. Roots entered beneath only the sections the coalition still needed, creating temporary support long enough for the leading teams to cross while unstable ground beyond the marked path was allowed to fall away.

The first demonic infantry descended along a slope that gave them a significant momentum advantage. Marephoros allowed the front ranks to commit before altering their own footing through Undertow Crossing and turning the strongest force sideways along the narrow path. The defenders behind the first rank tried to compensate and crowded into one another, giving Pyrelith a brief opportunity to strike a hardened position above them rather than the people directly. The explosion broke the stone support beneath the demonic formation, forcing it back without damaging the coalition's marked route.

East of the plateau, Yueru's force began its battle in three dimensions. The demonic aerial platforms were tied together through formation lines that strengthened whichever one came under the greatest pressure, while flying defenders above them repeatedly forced Celestara to fight inside an altitude range chosen by the Abyss. Ranged attacks rose from the platforms whenever Celestara climbed and descended from the aerial units whenever the coalition tried to stay low. The first several exchanges became less about killing anyone than about finding enough vertical space to approach the structures without allowing the defenders to attack from both directions simultaneously.

Yueru used the side of the plateau instead of going directly upward. Stormwind Lightning Step carried her across a narrow shelf beneath the first platform, where the formation had less room to predict movement through the stone wall and open air at once. A demonic spear descended toward her from above, but Thunder Riding Wind changed her acceleration while she was already moving and carried her outside the line before the point reached the shelf. Two Celestara cultivators forced the attacker lower, giving Yueru room to reach the platform edge.

Her sword met the defender's weapon close to the guard. Thunder Through Blade entered through the contact, but the demon released one hand as soon as the lightning began locking his grip, preventing the effect from traveling as deeply as it had against earlier opponents. Yueru did not waste power forcing the same technique through a connection that was already breaking. She turned with the defender's movement and brought Thunderclap Returning Sword back through the opening created by his adjustment, cutting across the forearm and forcing him away from the control ring.

Blue Sphere specialists reached the platform before another defender could replace him. One of the Pyrelith cultivators looked toward the exposed housing and asked whether destroying the platform would weaken the intake below, but the specialist pointed to the vertical conduit connecting both structures and said that they did not yet know where the burden would go. Yueru looked down toward the ground node and told the Pyrelith fighter, "Then we keep it. You can complain once we know what breaking it does." The man replied that he had begun to suspect patience was becoming an official coalition technique.

The first significant change inside the convergence complex happened before any intake was captured. Western pressure dropped when the Umbrel infiltration reached the first lower control chamber, and within several breaths the northern node accepted part of that burden while the southern intake strengthened more slowly. East changed after both, even though Yueru's group had not yet altered the ground structure. Xuanyin watched the order closely and asked the Blue Sphere elders to separate the reaction times instead of treating the complex as one simultaneous redistribution.

Haotian followed the same movement through Universe. The first deeper structure responded almost immediately to the western loss and redistributed pressure toward north and south. The second structure changed only after the first redistribution had already begun, then adjusted the eastern relationship enough to bring the overall system closer to its earlier balance. He told Xuanyin what he was seeing, and she marked the two structures separately rather than assuming they were redundant copies of the same device.

"So the first one moves the burden, and the second corrects what the first one does," she said while comparing the pressure sequence. Haotian answered that this was the clearest interpretation so far, though he still wanted another change before treating it as certain. Xuanyin told the northern and western commanders to continue their existing plans rather than produce an artificial test while two fronts were still fighting unstable terrain. The complex would give them enough information naturally if they did not rush to make it answer.

North reached its outer control platform first.

The defenders abandoned another section of road and concentrated around the intake itself, where the danger of damaging the formation forced the coalition to narrow its attacks. Several demonic specialists moved toward the lower controls when the Blue Sphere teams came within range, and Umbrel scouts who had entered through a maintenance cut beneath the road saw them preparing a demolition sequence. The scouts attacked the crews rather than the machinery, preventing the first activation without damaging the physical control ring.

One specialist still reached a secondary mechanism. The northern intake shook as several formation plates changed state, and the burden inside it surged sharply enough that the Blue Sphere elder at the surface ordered everyone not needed at the controls off the platform. Marephoros began drawing pressure into prepared receiving formations while Veridian Prime checked the buried conduits for signs that the partial demolition had weakened them. The node remained intact.

The coalition pushed the defenders away from the final control ring without destroying it. Blue Sphere specialists occupied the station in sections, taking one relationship at a time while the frontline fighters kept the demons from returning. The commander informed Xuanyin that the intake was theirs but still carrying enough burden to become dangerous if the central system redirected more toward it. Xuanyin told him to hold it and keep the receiving formations open, because the reaction elsewhere was already beginning.

The first balancing station shifted almost immediately.

North's reduced load moved west and south.

The second station responded several breaths later and altered the eastern intake.

Xuanyin compared the sequence with the earlier western fluctuation and nodded once. "Same order."

The Blue Sphere elder beside her followed the timing and asked whether they were ready to call the two deeper structures balancing stations. Xuanyin answered that she had already begun doing so because everyone needed a useful name before the next report arrived. The labels had no ceremonial significance; one was simply the first balancing station and the other the second because that described the order in which the coalition had observed them reacting.

West came under coalition control next.

The Umbrel group beneath the ridge disabled enough of the first formation layer that the distorted distance around the surface assault weakened, allowing Blue Sphere specialists to move through the gap before the Abyss could restore it. The second barrier remained active and altered attack angles around the defenders, forcing Lianhua to spend more time fighting inside the formation instead of bypassing it. The demons had also adjusted to her technique by shortening their stances and refusing to give her easy spatial lines.

Lianhua accepted several exchanges without using Voidpierce Sword Sutra. She let one swordsman believe the formation had successfully forced her back into ordinary distance, meeting his cuts with controlled physical deflections while Cloud-Sundering Steps gave her only enough position to keep from being pushed toward the strongest barrier line. The demon gradually pressed farther because the earlier spatial threat had not reappeared. When his guard shifted to exploit what looked like a retreating step, Lianhua remained close and used Voidpierce across only the final part of an already-established thrust.

The blade entered beneath his shoulder.

He withdrew before the wound could become immediately fatal, but that movement exposed the control platform behind him. Blue Sphere advanced, while Umbrel emerged from a second maintenance access that had been opened from below. Marephoros began reducing the intake pressure as soon as the specialists reached the controls, and the western node passed into coalition hands without being destroyed.

The first balancing station responded again.

North strengthened slightly.

South accepted a larger transfer.

The second station corrected toward east.

Xuanyin watched the same two-stage response repeat under different conditions and began considering what the system might do if one of the balancing stations stopped behaving according to Abyss control.

She did not test that yet.

The south remained far from secure, and the eastern force had captured two aerial platforms without reaching the ground intake. The entire purpose of preserving the outer nodes was to learn before acting, not to create another artificial crisis while two fronts were still exposed. Xuanyin ordered the northern and western teams to hold what they had and use the new pressure shifts to refine their receiving formations.

The southern situation worsened first.

As the northern and western intakes came under coalition control, the complex pushed more burden into the southern system, and the physical conduits beneath the fractured valley began heating enough for Veridian Prime to feel the change through the roots holding the path. The southern commander received the warning while his leading teams were already engaged near a narrow stone shelf beneath the intake. Retreating along the same route would have been possible, but abandoning the assault would have allowed the demons to reinforce the node and rebuild everything the coalition had gained.

The Veridian elder studied the valley wall and said that the main path would remain usable if they could reduce the burden moving under it. The commander asked whether there was another route to the intake, and the elder pointed toward a high eastern shelf that only a handful of cultivators could cross safely. "It will not carry a formation," he explained, "but it might carry enough people to make the defenders look the wrong way."

Tianlan reached the southern front soon afterward.

He had spent most of the morning moving reserves between north and east whenever the demons tried to reinforce those positions, and the Falcons had been more useful for finding movement behind the central ridges than for watching the obvious battles. When he opened a brief sensory bond with the higher bird above the southern valley, the ledge the Veridian elder had identified became much easier to understand. It ran behind part of the demonic defensive line before ending near the upper side of the intake platform.

Tianlan released the bond before choosing the group.

He did not take a large elite force, because the ledge could not safely support one and the main southern formation needed its strongest people where the ground was already under pressure. Two small mixed groups were enough. Veridian reinforced the weakest sections temporarily, Celestara carried the first cultivators to the beginning of the shelf, and Tianlan used a short Space adjustment only where the broken stone made the initial ascent too slow.

The ledge remained narrow enough that spear movement had to be controlled carefully. Tianlan kept the weapon close and used the point mainly to threaten anyone trying to approach rather than sweeping across ground that could not support broad footwork. The demons below saw movement along the wall and redirected several defenders upward. That change reduced pressure on the main southern line before Tianlan's group had to defeat anyone significant.

The Blue Sphere commander below recognized the opening and advanced. Marephoros turned the first descending countercharge away from the narrow coalition path, Veridian Prime held the shelf beneath the formation, and Pyrelith struck a hardened defense only after the demons protecting it were forced to widen. The southern force gained enough ground to reach the final approach to the intake.

Tianlan did not continue along the upper shelf once its purpose had been achieved. He withdrew the small groups before the temporary Veridian support had to carry them through prolonged fighting, and he returned to the valley floor while the main force established a more stable position below the platform. The southern intake remained contested, but the coalition was no longer trapped on the approach.

East advanced faster during the same period.

The first two aerial platforms had come under coalition control, and the third was already losing support because the balancing system had shifted pressure elsewhere. Yueru stayed with the forward group rather than chasing retreating aerial defenders beyond the platform network. Stormwind Lightning Step and Thunder Riding Wind carried her between the structures whenever the defenders tried to exploit the vertical gaps, but she relied on Celestara to control the air instead of attempting to replace their function herself.

The final platform fell after the defenders tried to reinforce it from below.

Celestara forced the incoming group upward into an unfavorable angle, while Yueru crossed beneath their attack line and reached the platform before they could settle. Thunder Through Blade disrupted one weapon long enough for a Blue Sphere cultivator to enter beside her, and Thunderclap Returning Sword forced a second defender away from the control ring. The platform became coalition-held without breaking the vertical conduits feeding the intake.

The eastern ground node sat below them in a fortified depression. Its defenders had already begun drawing pressure from the second balancing station, making the local formation stronger even though the aerial structures above were failing. Yueru looked at the Blue Sphere specialist beside her and asked whether the node had strengthened because the west had fallen, and he answered that the timing matched the latest command report. "Then Xuanyin is right," Yueru said. "These things are correcting each other."

The hidden underground route was discovered before east could finish its assault.

One of Tianlan's Falcons changed its pattern above the central ridge for the third time in less than an hour. Tianlan initially assumed the bird was following surface reinforcements, but when he opened the sensory bond, he saw demonic units disappear behind the ridge without emerging into any of the visible valleys. Several groups entered the same narrow area and vanished one after another, suggesting a descent rather than concealment along the surface.

Tianlan released the bond and moved toward Xuanyin's command position.

"There is a route behind the central ridge," he told her while pointing to the map. "They are moving troops down, not across."

Haotian extended the Dao Palace of the Universe toward the location now that he had a physical point to examine. The route had been concealed beneath the surrounding pressure well enough that it had blended into the larger convergence system from a distance. Once Tianlan identified the entrance, Haotian could follow the descending relationship toward the first balancing station.

A Blue Sphere commander suggested collapsing the ridge above the hidden passage to stop reinforcements. Tianlan shook his head before Xuanyin answered and explained that the same route might be the coalition's best way to reach the central structures without fighting across the entire plateau. Xuanyin agreed and changed the reserve plan rather than the surface assaults, ordering the captured outer nodes held while a central force prepared to penetrate underground.

Tianlan stayed above.

Xuanyin told him that the surface fronts still needed someone capable of redirecting reserves when the Abyss reacted to Haotian entering the center. Tianlan accepted the assignment and asked only that the Blue Sphere command formation keep the underground reports clear enough for him to know which reinforcement routes mattered most. Haotian told him to trust the surface commanders unless the Falcons showed something they could not see, and Tianlan gave a small nod before returning to the reserve.

The central penetration force was built around movement and control rather than overwhelming destructive power. Umbrel scouts entered first, Blue Sphere followed with the formation specialists, Marephoros and Veridian Prime moved behind them, and Pyrelith remained far enough back that a sudden fight would not tempt anyone into using broad techniques near active conduits. Haotian took the front once the route narrowed and the first demonic reserve appeared.

The hidden passage descended through an old natural fracture that the Abyss had widened into a troop corridor. The floor was reinforced with formation stone and crossed repeatedly by conduits carrying pressure from the outer intakes toward the central structures. Side chambers opened at intervals where demonic formations had been waiting to reinforce whichever surface front came under the greatest threat. Several of those chambers were empty by the time the coalition reached them, confirming that the routes Tianlan had seen from above had been feeding the outer battle for most of the morning.

The first defenders attacked where the corridor narrowed around a structural support.

A demonic spear came toward Haotian's chest while another fighter waited behind it with a heavy saber, using the confined space to prevent ordinary evasion. Haotian stepped inside the spear line and guided the shaft outside his ribs with one forearm rather than striking it away violently. His shoulder entered the attacker's chest and sent him into the wall, creating just enough room for the Blue Sphere fighters behind to reach the second defender before the saber could complete its swing.

Another group emerged from a side chamber.

Haotian moved through them with the close-range mechanics of Alter's Demon God Killing Martial Arts already embedded in his body, using grips, forearms, elbows, and short changes of stance instead of techniques that would damage the conduits beneath the floor. One demon tried to trap Haotian against the wall with a hooked blade, but Haotian moved with the pull rather than resisting it and turned the man's committed force into a throw that carried him across the path of his own companion. Marephoros redirected the collision away from the active conduit before Pyrelith used a narrow strike to break the remaining defensive line.

The coalition did not clear every side chamber completely.

Umbrel marked those that could be sealed, while Blue Sphere reserve teams occupied the entrances and allowed the main formation to continue deeper. Veridian Prime repeatedly checked the floor where the buried conduits changed direction, because one collapsed channel could have cut off the route behind them even if the demons failed to do so directly. The pressure increased as they approached the first balancing station.

The chamber opened much wider than the corridor.

A broad central ring occupied the floor, surrounded by several control platforms connected to conduits entering through the walls at different heights. The demons had concentrated their defenders close to those controls, using the coalition's desire to preserve the station as protection against the strongest attacks. Blue Sphere specialists immediately warned Pyrelith to keep every technique within the marked lanes until the central ring had been isolated.

Haotian entered the close fighting before the defenders could push the coalition back into the corridor.

The first opponent carried two short blades and tried to make Haotian turn toward him while another demon attacked from the opposite side. Haotian caught one wrist, guided it across the second weapon, and used the crossed arms as a temporary barrier between himself and the other attacker. His elbow struck the first demon's upper arm, followed by a shoulder that broke the man's stance enough for a Blue Sphere fighter to take over the exchange.

The defenders adjusted quickly.

They stopped trying to surround Haotian and kept several fighters farther back, attacking only when he committed to someone near the control ring. Haotian recognized that chasing them would pull him away from the actual objective, so he held the ground around the station and let their need to protect it bring them closer instead. Blue Sphere specialists advanced behind him in small groups while Marephoros moved toward the conduit channels.

Umbrel entered through a maintenance access beneath the chamber.

The scouts could not remain concealed once they reached the brightly lit control space, so Veil Shroud faded naturally as they moved into direct action. They targeted the demonic formation crews rather than the fighters holding the main floor, interrupting hands reaching for control plates and forcing specialists away from the station before they could damage it. Silent Flow — Soundless Crossing remained useful for crossing the narrow distances between control platforms without giving defenders enough warning to block every approach.

The first balancing station changed hands section by section.

Blue Sphere secured one outer control ring while Veridian Prime stabilized the physical conduits beneath it. Marephoros reduced the burden passing through the captured section so that the remaining hostile controls could not throw the entire station into instability. Haotian continued holding the strongest defenders away from the central ring until the last demonic formation specialist was forced out of the lower maintenance control.

The Blue Sphere elder overseeing the station did not immediately announce success. He spent several breaths checking the captured relationships before contacting Xuanyin and telling her that the station remained mostly intact, though two outer controls had been damaged during the fight. Xuanyin asked whether he could read the outer intakes, and he answered that north, west, and south were clear while east appeared only indirectly through the second balancing station.

"Can you alter the balance?" Xuanyin asked through the communication formation.

The elder looked across the unfamiliar controls. "Yes, but I would rather begin with something small."

"That is exactly what I want."

The first adjustment was barely noticeable at the surface.

Blue Sphere made the northern intake appear slightly heavier to the captured station than it actually was. The station responded according to its original design and redistributed a modest portion of pressure toward west and south. Marephoros teams at both intakes were already prepared and accepted the change without difficulty.

The second balancing station reacted several breaths later.

East weakened.

Yueru felt the platform beneath her boots change and looked toward the Blue Sphere specialist who had been waiting for an opening in the ground node. He checked the pressure plate and told her that the eastern defensive formation had lost part of its support. Yueru glanced toward the final approach and said, "Then we go before it gets corrected again."

Celestara pressured the remaining aerial defenders while the ground teams descended toward the intake.

Stormwind Lightning Step carried Yueru through the first defensive gap, but she did not remain ahead of the formation after reaching it. The demon facing her had already learned to release his weapon when Thunder Through Blade entered through contact, so she used the lightning only long enough to disrupt his first attack and then shifted into ordinary swordwork when the connection broke. Thunderclap Returning Sword caught his attempted recovery and forced him away from the control ring.

Blue Sphere specialists entered.

Veridian Prime traced the physical conduit beneath the node.

Marephoros stabilized the burden that returned when the second balancing station began correcting.

The eastern intake came under coalition control before the support could fully recover.

Three outer nodes were now theirs.

North, west, east.

South remained contested.

Xuanyin did not push the captured balancing station harder simply because the eastern assault had succeeded. The southern approach still depended on Veridian holding fractured terrain under increasing burden, and forcing another large redistribution could have collapsed the route beneath them. Instead, she used small changes through the first station to observe how the second responded while giving the southern force whatever minor relief could be achieved safely.

The two stations began correcting against each other repeatedly.

When Xuanyin made north appear heavier, the first station relieved it and the second shifted east to restore balance. When she altered west, the first station adjusted south and the second responded through another route. The complex was no longer hiding the relationship between its central structures as effectively as before, because one of them was being operated by people deliberately creating small inconsistencies and watching where the correction arrived.

Haotian examined the deeper system through Universe from inside the captured station.

Something beneath the second balancing station responded whenever the conflict between the two upper structures became too large. The pressure was broader than either station could produce on its own and reached all four intake relationships indirectly. Haotian had suspected a deeper regulator from the first reconnaissance, but now the function became clear enough that he was willing to name it for the command group.

"The regulator is beneath the second station," he told Xuanyin.

She studied the latest pressure change. "Can the first station influence it?"

"Indirectly. The second station is between them."

"Then we need the second station before we can control what the regulator is doing."

Haotian agreed.

The route deeper into the complex opened through the captured balancing station's maintenance level, where several conduits descended toward another chamber on the far side of the central depression. Umbrel scouts entered first and returned with reports of heavier defenses, stronger formation pressure, and at least one cultivation presence far above the ordinary commanders guarding the outer intakes. Xuanyin did not pull Haotian back to the surface after hearing that. The entire reason they had preserved the outer system was to reach the deeper controls intact.

Tianlan spent the same period preventing the surface battle from collapsing around the underground advance.

The two healthy Falcons alternated between wide observation and short sensory bonds whenever the ridges concealed movement that Celestara could not confirm. He saw one demonic reserve force leave the northern front and disappear toward the hidden underground route, then redirected Blue Sphere teams to the entrance before the demons reached it. Another group attempted the same approach from east, forcing him to shift part of the reserve without stripping Yueru's newly captured intake of support.

The northern reinforcement carried an Immortal Lord-level commander who tried to break through before the reserve formation was fully settled. Tianlan met the man's long sword with his spear but refused to let the exchange draw him away from the passage. The first collision pushed the spear head aside, and Tianlan shortened his grip rather than surrendering the line entirely, bringing the butt across the demon's ribs when he stepped forward. The man adjusted and tried to move around him instead of continuing the duel.

Tianlan followed only enough to keep his body between the commander and the underground route.

Another coalition Immortal Lord entered from the side and took over the heavier exchange. Tianlan withdrew immediately and turned toward the reserve formation, where several demonic infantry groups were trying to use the commander's attack as cover. His spear returned to the broader line rather than the strongest opponent.

The eastern reinforcement proved smaller but more dangerous to the intake itself.

Celestara saw the first movement, while one Falcon confirmed that part of the group was using a lower ravine hidden from the main aerial patrol. Tianlan opened the sensory bond long enough to identify the route, released it, and sent only half of his remaining mobile reserve. The other half stayed near the center because south was still contested and could not be left without support if the Abyss shifted its attention again.

The decision preserved the surface balance.

The eastern group was intercepted before reaching Yueru's position, while the central reserve remained available when a second demonic force began moving toward the southern valley. Tianlan did not chase either formation personally once local commanders had enough strength to contain them. His role had become maintaining the connections between battles rather than using the Falcons to find another enemy he could kill himself.

The southern intake still refused to fall.

The coalition had reached the platform, but the fractured ground limited how many people could fight there at once, and the Abyss had increased its defensive pressure rather than allowing the node to be taken as the other three had been. Veridian Prime was already supporting two sections of the approach with temporary roots and could not simply strengthen the entire region indefinitely. Marephoros controlled repeated downward charges from the defenders while Blue Sphere rotated exhausted teams away from the narrow front.

The local commander contacted Xuanyin and told her that the intake was close but not stable enough to seize under the current load. Xuanyin looked toward the captured balancing station's readings and asked whether the pressure beneath the southern platform could safely be reduced further. The elder operating the station answered that he could make south appear heavier and encourage the first station to unload it, but the second station would probably correct the change quickly.

"Do it once," Xuanyin said. "We need an opening, not a permanent solution."

The captured station shifted.

South unloaded enough pressure for the defensive formation around the intake to dim.

The local commander saw the change and advanced immediately.

Veridian Prime extended the stable path to the outer control ring while Marephoros redirected the first countercharge along the slope rather than back into the coalition. Pyrelith broke one hardened barrier after Blue Sphere confirmed it was not carrying the intake's main burden. The southern force gained several more yards but did not reach full control before the second balancing station corrected.

Pressure returned.

The advance stopped.

The intake remained contested.

Xuanyin did not repeat the manipulation blindly. She had gained what she wanted from the response and refused to weaken the captured station or overload another node just to force south into coalition hands before the deeper operation was ready. The local commander understood and told his teams to hold the platform edge rather than spend lives pushing through the restored formation.

Below the plateau, Haotian's force moved toward the second balancing station.

The corridor was broader than the route used to reach the first, but the formation pressure inside it was much heavier. Dark conduits ran openly along the walls and floor, carrying burden from the second station toward a deeper structure Haotian could now identify as the regulator. Blue Sphere specialists moved carefully because damaging one of those relationships could have affected every captured intake above.

The Umbrel scouts returned from the next turn sooner than expected.

One of them told Haotian that the second station was occupied by a stronger garrison and that the main corridor had been cleared rather than barricaded. The absence of an obstacle made the warning more serious, not less. The Abyss wanted whatever waited ahead to have room to fight.

Haotian felt the cultivation presence before the Demon General came into view.

It settled through the corridor with enough weight that several Blue Sphere cultivators adjusted their stance unconsciously. The first visible part of the General was his weapon, a long polearm with a broad single-edged blade whose lower portion thickened near the shaft. The demon carried it in both hands without allowing the weapon's size to interfere with the confined passage.

The General attacked the leading Blue Sphere fighter rather than waiting for Haotian to approach.

The blade crossed the corridor at neck height, forcing the cultivator backward while Haotian stepped forward and met the shaft below the cutting edge. He redirected the weapon enough that the blade passed the retreating fighter, then entered closer before the General could recover full reach. Haotian's shoulder struck the chest armor, followed by a short palm that tested the protection rather than trying to finish the fight immediately.

The General gave only half a step.

He changed grip before Haotian could remain inside the weapon's reach, sliding one hand higher and turning the long polearm into a much shorter lever. The lower shaft struck Haotian's side while the blade returned from above, forcing him to change position instead of pressing the chest again. The demon had clearly trained for enclosed fighting rather than simply bringing a battlefield weapon into terrain where it did not fit.

Haotian ducked beneath the returning edge and contacted the weapon arm with his forearm. The General rotated through the pressure rather than resisting it and brought the lower end of the polearm toward Haotian's knee. Haotian lifted the leg, stepped across the demon's center, and attempted to control the elbow, but the General released one hand and struck him across the shoulder before the grip settled.

The impact drove Haotian several inches sideways.

The General used the brief separation.

Cultivation entered the floor.

Haotian felt the regulator respond beneath them.

A heavy surge moved north.

The captured intake above immediately brightened.

Xuanyin saw the change on the command map and redirected part of the burden west through the first balancing station before the northern teams had to ask. Marephoros at both nodes handled the transfer, while Veridian Prime watched the physical conduits for any sign that the regulator had pushed the system beyond what the captured structures could survive.

Haotian returned to the General before another manipulation finished.

The polearm came around again, this time with the grip shortened from the start. Haotian stepped inside the broad edge and struck the weapon arm, but the General used the contact to rotate the shaft and drive its lower end toward his ribs. The blow caught Haotian's armor and forced him to shift his weight before he could attack the chest.

The regulator remained comparatively still during the most demanding part of the exchange.

Haotian noticed the difference but did not trust one observation.

He gave the General several feet.

The demon immediately sent another adjustment through the floor.

West began losing pressure.

East climbed.

Haotian entered again before the shift completed.

The General abandoned part of the manipulation and brought the polearm back into motion.

The relationship between the two activities became clearer without becoming simple. The demon could fight and control the system at the same time, but the most precise regulator adjustments required enough attention that his polearm sequence lost some of its complexity, while the most demanding close-range weapon work left the network comparatively steady. Haotian began changing distance with that pattern in mind, forcing the General to choose repeatedly between using the regulator cleanly and answering pressure directly.

The Demon General recognized the test.

His next regulator adjustment was smaller and required less attention, leaving enough focus for the polearm to remain dangerous. Haotian entered expecting another simplified weapon sequence and instead found the blade already changing angle inside the corridor. The edge passed across his left forearm before he could move fully inside it, cutting through armor and skin deeply enough that blood began running toward his wrist.

Haotian adjusted his grip immediately.

He stopped presenting the injured arm to the broad edge and used it closer to the inside of the weapon line, where the General had less room to turn the blade through it. The demon saw that change as well and stopped attacking the wound directly after one attempt, shifting instead toward Haotian's right shoulder. The lower shaft struck hard enough to crack the outer armor and drive pain through the joint.

Haotian remained close.

The body mechanics of Alter's Demon God Killing Martial Arts shaped how he used the confined range without requiring any named strike. He attacked the General's stance, shoulder, weapon control, and breathing rhythm through short contact, forcing small corrections that prevented the demon from settling comfortably over the control relationship beneath the floor. The General answered with equally practical adjustments, shortening his stance when Haotian attacked the legs and using the polearm shaft as a brace whenever Haotian tried to turn his body.

The fight moved slowly toward the second balancing station.

Haotian was not yet driving the General backward decisively, but neither was the demon free to remain over the cleanest regulator control point. Every exchange altered their position by a few feet, and every few feet changed how easily the General could reach the deeper formation relationships. Haotian kept track of those changes while managing the bleeding from his forearm and the growing pain in his shoulder.

Behind him, the Blue Sphere formation specialists remained far enough back that they were not pulled into the duel.

They were watching the station.

Umbrel scouts moved through side maintenance routes looking for another approach.

Marephoros remained close to the conduits, prepared to handle whatever burden the regulator sent toward the captured outer system.

Above, Xuanyin continued manipulating the first balancing station while watching the General's pressure shifts.

She did not attempt to synchronize every move with Haotian's fight. The delay between the underground exchange and the surface readings made that impossible, and the four outer fronts had their own problems to solve. Instead, she used the captured station to prevent any single intake from becoming an easy target while observing which regulator changes arrived cleanly and which seemed incomplete.

The western intake began emptying too quickly.

Lianhua remained near the specialists while Marephoros slowed the loss. The Blue Sphere elder beside her explained that if the node fell too far below the others, the first balancing station would automatically draw from north unless Xuanyin overrode it. Lianhua watched the pressure plate settle under Marephoros control and said, "Then we give her enough time to override it."

East took another surge several minutes later.

Yueru felt the platform vibrate through her boots while the specialists opened additional receiving paths. One younger cultivator asked whether they should send the burden back toward north, but the Marephoros elder beside him told him to wait until the full direction of the surge was clear. Yueru stayed out of the control work and focused on the defenders still probing the outer platform, because the people handling the node no longer needed her telling them how to do their jobs.

The southern battle remained the least resolved.

The defenders there had recognized that the coalition could not put enough people on the fractured platform to overwhelm them quickly, so they kept rotating fresh units through the intake while the narrow ground limited Blue Sphere's ability to do the same. Veridian Prime repeatedly opened short-lived approach lines, allowing wounded teams to withdraw and replacements to move forward without forcing the entire formation over one unstable route. The southern commander held the edge of the intake rather than trying to seize it under every temporary pressure drop.

Tianlan kept reinforcements from reaching them.

A Falcon bond showed him one demonic column leaving the central plateau and moving toward the southern valley through a hidden ravine. He released the bird's senses, sent a reserve group to block the ravine, and kept himself near the central ridge because another formation had begun moving toward the underground entrance. The visible strength of the southern battle did not persuade him to abandon the routes feeding it.

The demons changed their surface priorities after the first balancing station remained in coalition hands longer than expected.

Several high-level commanders stopped attacking the intake fronts directly and began targeting Blue Sphere formation specialists, Marephoros pressure controllers, and Veridian cultivators working around exposed conduits. The shift was coordinated enough that Xuanyin noticed similar behavior at north and east within minutes. She warned every intake commander that the Abyss had stopped trying to win only through formation pressure and was now attacking the people keeping the captured structures functional.

North lost one receiving specialist before the local formation adapted. A demonic Immortal Lord crossed the outer line during a pressure surge and reached the control platform before the defenders could close around him. The man killed one Blue Sphere cultivator and wounded another before a Marephoros fighter redirected his next committed strike far enough for the reserve to surround him.

The intake never fell.

West faced a similar attempt.

Lianhua intercepted one high-level demon trying to reach the formation specialists from the ridge side, using Cloud-Sundering Steps to cross the uneven platform without forcing everyone around her to abandon their positions. The demon had little interest in fighting her and repeatedly tried to break away toward the control ring. Lianhua kept her sword between him and the specialists until two coalition Immortal Lords arrived to take over the heavier exchange.

East used Celestara to prevent the same approach from above.

Yueru remained near the platform long enough to help stop one descending group, then returned toward the intake instead of chasing the survivors into open air. Thunder Riding Wind let her change acceleration around a demonic spear line, but the opening belonged to the Celestara fighters who forced the attackers away from the formation controls. The coalition's specialists continued working.

Xuanyin saw the attacks for what they were and adjusted protection around every captured node.

The Abyss could not retake the intakes easily while Blue Sphere formations remained connected, so it was trying to remove the people who made that connection possible. She shifted reserve cultivators toward the technical teams without pulling enough strength from the fronts to create obvious holes. Tianlan mirrored the change through the mobile reserve, placing additional high-level fighters near routes leading to the captured nodes rather than keeping all of them around himself.

The regulator became more aggressive as the surface attacks failed.

A surge hit north and west together.

The first balancing station caught part of it.

Xuanyin redistributed enough toward east that none of the three captured nodes approached immediate failure.

South remained outside that framework because the intake was still contested.

That limitation increasingly shaped every decision.

The second balancing station continued correcting against the captured first station, while the regulator beneath it used the uncontrolled southern node as a freer route whenever pressure became difficult to force through north, west, or east. Xuanyin recognized the pattern and told the southern commander that taking the intake remained important but not at the cost of collapsing the ground beneath it. "Hold the platform edge and keep their specialists occupied," she said. "We will weaken it from inside if we can."

The underground fight had already reached the outer chamber of the second balancing station by then.

Haotian's left forearm continued bleeding despite the pressure he kept around the wound, and the damaged shoulder armor had begun restricting one angle of movement when he raised the right arm too quickly. The Demon General had taken several short palm strikes through the chest plate and one hard elbow to the weapon arm, though none had compromised him enough to end the fight. Both men had adapted repeatedly, and the confined corridor had become marked by cuts in the stone where the polearm missed and shallow depressions where their feet had absorbed heavier exchanges.

The General tried another precise regulator manipulation while creating distance with a thrust.

Haotian allowed the first part of the separation, then changed direction before the demon expected him to return. The blade passed outside his ribs, and Haotian's right forearm struck the shaft while the injured left hand controlled the elbow briefly from inside. His shoulder entered the chest and forced the General one step farther toward the edge of the station's control area.

The regulator response arrived late.

Haotian felt that through the floor.

He did not need to state the conclusion aloud.

The General knew the same thing, because his next movement changed immediately and he stopped giving ground willingly.

The polearm shortened in his grip again.

He attacked Haotian's body with the shaft and lower end instead of trying to recover the long range. The first blow struck the side armor, the second came toward the injured forearm, and the blade followed only after Haotian adjusted to protect the wound. Haotian moved through the sequence rather than away from it, accepting one impact on the shoulder so he could remain close enough to keep the demon from settling back over the control relationship.

Behind the General, the second balancing station pulsed.

Beyond it, the regulator's deeper links began appearing more clearly through Universe as the fight disturbed the local network.

Haotian could feel several relationships extending away from the complex.

He did not have enough control of the station to follow them yet.

The Demon General remained between him and that opportunity.

Xuanyin received the first underground report that the deeper links were becoming visible while she was still coordinating the three captured intakes.

She looked toward the southern marker, which remained contested, then toward the two balancing stations. The coalition had already achieved enough of the original assault to change the complex fundamentally: north, west, and east belonged to them, the first balancing station was intact under Blue Sphere control, and the Abyss was being forced to use its remaining outer node and deeper structures more aggressively. The operation could no longer be treated as four independent intake battles.

She contacted the southern commander and told him to stop trying to take the final control ring until the pressure changed again.

He answered after several breaths of fighting, "We are close."

"I know."

"If we stop now, they reinforce."

"Then make them think you are still trying. I need the node intact more than I need it five minutes sooner."

The commander accepted the instruction.

The southern assault remained active without committing to the final capture.

Blue Sphere held the approach.

Marephoros continued controlling the downhill force.

Veridian Prime preserved the ground.

Pyrelith struck only when the defenders presented safe targets away from the formation housing.

That restraint allowed Xuanyin to concentrate on the first balancing station.

She altered its pressure distribution again, making west appear slightly overloaded while north appeared more stable than it really was. The second station responded, attempting to move burden toward south and east. The southern node strengthened, but east changed in a way the coalition could measure cleanly because it was already under their control.

Xuanyin repeated the adjustment with a smaller variation.

The second station corrected again.

This time the regulator intervened.

A heavier pressure response entered through the second balancing station and touched all four outer relationships, including the contested south.

Xuanyin watched the sequence carefully.

The regulator was no longer allowing the two balancing stations to negotiate entirely on their own.

That gave Haotian a clearer signal from below.

It also made the Demon General more dangerous.

The General felt the regulator engage and used the added support to force pressure through the floor without stepping fully back into the clean control position. Haotian entered immediately, but the demon had prepared for that response. The polearm blade changed line midway through the attack and cut across Haotian's side armor, opening a shallow wound beneath the plates before he could move fully inside.

Haotian's palm struck the General's chest at the same time.

The armor cracked along one edge.

Neither man withdrew far.

Their next exchange happened at arm's length, where the weapon became a staff, lever, and cutting edge within the same sequence.

The General struck Haotian across the shoulder.

Haotian controlled the weapon arm and attacked the demon's stance.

The General shifted before the knee could be compromised and used the movement to regain part of the station boundary.

Haotian followed.

The regulator pulsed beneath them.

The Blue Sphere specialists waiting farther back could not yet enter.

The General still controlled enough ground around the second balancing station that sending them forward would have placed the technical team inside his weapon range. Haotian therefore kept the fight where it was, accepting that the station could not be captured until he created enough separation between the demon and the controls.

The surface commanders continued their work without waiting for that separation.

North stabilized after another regulator surge.

West remained under coalition control despite repeated attempts to drain it.

East held against two more high-level attacks targeting the specialists.

South remained contested but no longer advanced under every temporary opening.

Tianlan moved reserves between those sectors according to actual danger rather than visible intensity, using the Falcons only when terrain concealed a route the ground formations could not resolve.

As the afternoon light shifted across the plateau, the convergence complex had become divided in a way the Abyss had never intended. Three intake nodes and one balancing station answered to the coalition, while the southern intake, second balancing station, and deeper regulator remained under demonic control. The two sides were operating different parts of one system at the same time, each pressure adjustment forcing the other to respond through structures neither could afford to destroy carelessly.

Haotian's fight with the Demon General continued at the edge of that division.

Blood from his left forearm had reached his palm and begun making direct grips less reliable, so he increasingly used forearm contact, shoulder pressure, and short control at the elbow instead of trying to hold the polearm shaft with the injured hand. The shallow cut along his side pulled whenever he rotated too far, while the bruised shoulder reminded him every time the General used the lower shaft instead of the blade. None of the injuries prevented movement, but all of them altered which movements remained efficient.

The Demon General carried his own accumulating damage.

The chest armor had cracked where Haotian had struck it repeatedly, and the weapon arm had absorbed enough impacts that one grip transition had become slightly slower than it had been at the beginning of the fight. He compensated by shortening the weapon earlier and relying more on stance rather than speed when Haotian crowded him. The adjustments kept the exchange dangerous and prevented Haotian from turning small advantages into an easy conclusion.

Haotian stayed patient.

The second balancing station remained behind the General.

The regulator remained deeper.

The surface coalition needed time to strengthen its control of the structures already captured.

There was no benefit in forcing a finishing exchange before the battlefield around them was ready to survive whatever the regulator did afterward.

Xuanyin seemed to reach the same conclusion from above.

She stopped trying to create larger imbalances through the first station and used the captured system only to keep north, west, and east stable while the southern formation held its contested approach. The Blue Sphere elders refined the outer pressure relationships one adjustment at a time, while Marephoros learned how much burden each captured intake could accept without destabilizing its physical conduits. Veridian Prime recorded every weak section so no future redistribution would rely on a structure already close to failure.

Tianlan returned to the central ridge after stopping another attempt to reinforce the underground route.

One of the Falcons descended briefly before climbing again, and he chose not to open a sensory bond because Celestara had already confirmed the surrounding movement. He looked across the plateau and saw three coalition-held intake positions connected by active formation lines, while the southern battle continued inside fractured terrain below. The coalition had not taken the entire complex, but the surface no longer belonged entirely to the Abyss.

Xuanyin contacted him and asked whether the central routes were clear.

"For now," Tianlan answered. "They are still trying to move people underground."

"Keep them above."

"I am."

She did not add anything else.

Below the plateau, the Demon General changed grip and drove the polearm forward again.

Haotian turned the shaft past his ribs and stepped closer, keeping the injured forearm away from the blade while his right shoulder struck the demon's chest. The General braced and answered with the lower end of the weapon, catching Haotian across the damaged shoulder before the distance fully collapsed. Haotian accepted the impact, stayed inside the reach, and struck the cracked armor with a short palm that forced the General one step away from the center of the control platform.

The regulator's response came late.

The second balancing station fluctuated.

Several deeper relationships became visible through Universe for the first time without being immediately buried beneath the upper pressure.

Haotian felt them extending beyond the complex and understood that the regulator was connected to more than the four local intakes, but there was no opportunity to follow those lines while the General remained in front of him. He kept the information in mind and continued the exchange, allowing the Blue Sphere specialists behind him to prepare for the moment when the second station finally became accessible.

Above, Xuanyin saw the same fluctuation through the command map.

She did not try to interpret the deeper routes from incomplete data, and she did not order south into another reckless push merely because the regulator had shown something new. Instead, she told the first balancing station to maintain the current outer distribution and ordered the three captured intakes to hold their existing ranges. The coalition had reached far enough into the convergence complex that forcing the next step would gain less than preparing properly for it.

The southern intake remained under pressure.

The second balancing station remained hostile.

The regulator continued responding beneath it.

Haotian and the Demon General stayed locked at the boundary between the captured and uncaptured halves of the underground system, each exchange shifting their position by feet rather than ending the fight in one oversized technique. The coalition held what it had taken, the Abyss protected what remained, and the regulator's deeper relationships continued appearing in brief fragments whenever the General's control was interrupted long enough for Haotian to see through them.

By the time the sun had begun lowering beyond the western ridge, no commander on either side could treat the convergence complex as a collection of independent positions anymore. Three outer intakes fed the coalition's captured balancing station, the contested south continued giving the Abyss one surface route into the system, and the second balancing station still answered to the regulator beneath it. Haotian remained in front of the Demon General with blood drying along his forearm while Blue Sphere specialists waited behind him, and the next stage of the operation depended on taking the station without allowing the deeper network to destroy itself before they could understand what it controlled.
