The three genuine routes beyond the destroyed river relay separated gradually through the wooded highlands, and by the time the coalition had followed them far enough to establish stable reconnaissance, they no longer resembled branches of the same system. The northern route crossed rolling forest and old agricultural ground where seven active formation nodes appeared at irregular intervals, each carrying enough pressure to be genuine but none large enough to dominate the others. The central route turned east toward a shattered canyon region and remained quiet for long periods before accepting tremendous bursts of burden that made every formation specialist watching it stop what they were doing. The southernmost route carried so little obvious pressure that several scouts initially wondered whether they had somehow followed another decoy despite everything they had learned at the hidden relay.
Xuanyin refused to classify the quiet route until the reports from all three had been compared twice. She stood beside the forward command formation with three separate maps laid across the table, watching Blue Sphere specialists add pressure readings while Haotian examined the same relationships through the Dao Palace of the Universe. "The first route reacts constantly, the second carries the heaviest load, and the third behaves as though it barely needs to exist," she said after the latest measurements came in. Haotian followed the quiet relationship deeper and answered that it was connected too cleanly to be discarded, even though he still could not tell whether its purpose was transport, monitoring, or something they had not encountered yet.
Tianlan leaned over the southern map while one of the healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons circled far above the staging area. He had not opened a sensory bond since arriving because the scouts were reporting clearly enough from the ground, and the second Falcon was already following the canyon route farther east where aerial observation mattered more. Looking at the almost flat pressure line, he said, "If this one were carrying reinforcements, it would not stay this quiet while the other two keep changing." Xuanyin nodded without calling that a conclusion and replied that the coalition would learn more by leaving the third route intact than by proving they could destroy something they did not yet understand.
The decision that followed was simple in principle and complicated in execution. The northern route would be dismantled, the canyon route would be dismantled after its pulsing burden was understood, and the quiet southern route would be preserved until the other two no longer gave the network anywhere else to hide its reactions. Xuanyin assigned separate forces before anyone could begin thinking of the three objectives as one giant battle, and she made certain the northern force had enough strength to operate without Haotian. "If Route One requires him to solve every pressure shift for you, then we have learned very little from the last two operations," she told the Blue Sphere elder taking command there.
Elder Sen accepted the criticism without offense. He was old enough that several of the younger formation specialists accompanying him had trained under people he had once taught, and the rift campaign had already given him more practical experience with mixed planetary formations than most commanders on Blue Sphere World. He looked over the seven-node map and said, "If the load starts running from one node to another, we stop chasing it and find what all seven depend on." Haotian gave him a small nod and reminded him only that Pyrelith should not be allowed to destroy the first bright structure simply because it looked satisfying.
The Pyrelith commander beside Sen sighed. "Everyone keeps warning us about that as though we have no self-control." Sen looked at him and replied that half the warnings existed because his people had enough destructive power to make one bad decision memorable. The man considered that for a moment, then conceded that the criticism was probably fair and returned to his mixed teams without arguing further. Haotian watched the exchange and left the rest of Route One to them.
Tianlan moved with the force assigned to the canyon route because its terrain and intermittent pressure made mobile command more useful than another fixed assault group. Additional Marephoros cultivators joined that formation, along with more Celestara scouts than the northern route received, since several of the canyon walls rose too sharply for ordinary ground observation. Xuanyin remained with the quiet route and the central command structure, while Haotian divided his attention between the monitoring operation beside her and whatever deeper spatial responses appeared once the other two routes came under pressure. The arrangement left every major group with enough responsibility that no one could simply wait for Haotian to decide what their battlefield meant.
Route One made contact first.
The seven nodes followed terrain rather than geometry. Two sat along low forested ridges, one occupied the bottom of an abandoned quarry, another had been buried beneath the remains of a Blue Sphere village, and the final three were positioned near crossings where old roads and streams once made movement through the region easier. The Abyss had used those locations intelligently, placing the visible infrastructure where ordinary armies would naturally want to move while burying enough of the connecting system that the nodes appeared more independent than they really were.
The first pressure transfer happened before Sen's formation reached the village ruins. The westernmost node dimmed sharply, the quarry brightened, and another node farther north accepted enough burden that a dark formation ring became visible through the trees. Several younger Blue Sphere specialists looked toward the northern ridge at the same time, but Sen noticed and told them to keep walking. "If the burden wants us to chase it, then chasing it is probably the least useful thing we can do."
Veridian Prime began working beneath the village while the combat formations spread around them. Their roots entered through broken foundations, old wells, and cracks where the soil had settled unevenly around buried stone. One cultivator followed a conduit east until it separated into two smaller channels, while another found a northern line that disappeared beneath a collapsed building and never reached the node they expected. The first hour produced more questions than answers, but Sen did not respond by attacking whichever structure remained easiest to see.
The demons tried to change that.
A defensive formation descended from the northern ridge and struck the coalition before the Veridian cultivators finished tracing the village. The front ranks carried heavy spears and broad shields, while two Immortal-level commanders remained behind them and watched the technical teams rather than the fighters moving forward to meet the attack. Blue Sphere formations tightened around the village without crowding onto the buried conduits, and Marephoros took positions where the sloping ground would turn a demonic charge into the greatest threat.
The first collision sent mud and broken stone through the old street. Marephoros cultivators yielded enough space for the charge to spend part of its force before redirecting the remaining momentum toward sections where Blue Sphere spears were already waiting. Veridian roots entered beneath the defenders' rear feet and complicated their attempts to reset, but the demons cut themselves free quickly and adjusted their stance to avoid depending on the same footing twice. Pyrelith remained farther back until one of the demonic commanders compressed several shield groups into a narrow lane to protect the northern approach.
Sen saw the same opening and lifted two fingers rather than shouting. The Pyrelith pair nearest him gathered concentrated destructive pressure and released it into the center of the compressed formation, breaking shields and armor without sending enough force into the ground to damage the buried channels Veridian had marked. Blue Sphere advanced into the gap while Marephoros prevented the defenders on either side from collapsing inward with their full weight. The demonic commander abandoned the lane rather than wasting more people trying to hold it, revealing that the defenders were willing to surrender local ground as long as the nodes remained functional.
While that battle continued, Umbrel scouts moved through the maintenance routes beneath the ruined village. Veil Shroud — Empty Silhouette reduced their presence whenever they crossed openings where formation light reached the lower chambers, while Silent Flow — Soundless Crossing carried them through narrow stone corridors without making enough noise for the defenders above to follow their direction. They found three conduits entering a common buried channel beneath the village and another deeper line running below all of them.
The first scout returned to Sen while the northern defense was still being pushed back. He described the shared channel and added that one of the conduits carried less pressure than the others but continued deeper beneath the village. Sen looked toward the Veridian cultivators, who had independently reached the same area from above, and asked whether they could confirm that the deeper line remained active when the visible nodes changed load. One of them answered, "It has not moved once, and that is beginning to bother me."
Sen told the Blue Sphere specialists to watch it during the next transfer. The network obliged minutes later, shifting burden from the quarry into two ridge nodes while the visible formations brightened and dimmed across several miles. The deeper village line remained stable. Sen crouched beside the exposed stone and asked whether everyone had finished being tempted by the brighter targets, earning a few tired smiles from the people who had nearly chased the first transfer.
The coalition changed its objective without calling Haotian.
Blue Sphere specialists began building receiving relationships around the buried village junction while Marephoros spread into positions where transferred burden would be easiest to control. Veridian Prime traced the deeper line in both directions and discovered that four physical channels eventually touched the same reinforced section even though they appeared independent near the surface. Umbrel moved ahead into the maintenance network to identify demolition controls, and Pyrelith was instructed to wait until the common section had been unloaded enough to break safely.
The Abyss recognized the danger once the coalition stopped threatening individual nodes.
The northern defenders abandoned two positions they had spent the morning protecting and drove toward the village instead. One of the Immortal-level commanders entered the front himself, striking hard enough to tear open the outer Blue Sphere formation before Marephoros could absorb the full impact. Sen ordered the reserve inward but did not step away from the technical teams, because the sudden concentration of defenders around the village confirmed more than any pressure reading could.
The Immortal commander fought with a heavy hooked sword that made ordinary redirection dangerous. He repeatedly caught spear shafts or forearms and used the hook to pull coalition fighters off their prepared footing, forcing Marephoros cultivators to shorten their responses and attack his balance rather than his weapon. A Blue Sphere Immortal eventually met him near the village well, and the two remained locked in a moving exchange while the rest of the formation protected the buried junction.
Veridian Prime exposed the final shared conduit beneath the road during that fight. The physical structure was larger than the surface nodes suggested, built to accept pressure from several directions and redistribute it before any one node overloaded. The Blue Sphere elder nearest Sen looked at the network diagram and said, "If we break this after unloading it, the seven nodes lose their common path." Sen asked whether the burden could escape through any route they had not traced, and the Veridian cultivators answered that they had found no other physical junction capable of handling the same volume.
Marephoros began drawing the load.
The first transfer pushed back hard enough to crack one receiving plate, forcing the cultivator standing over it to abandon the formation before the backlash could enter his body. Another specialist replaced him while a healer dragged the injured man away from the road, and the operation continued without anyone treating the casualty as a reason to stop. The seven nodes responded by shifting burden repeatedly, but every transfer still touched the same shared structure before reaching its new destination.
Sen waited until the common junction had fallen below half its earlier load. Pyrelith asked once whether that was enough, and the Blue Sphere elder told them to give Marephoros one more cycle. When the next transfer completed and the receiving formations remained stable, Sen finally authorized the strike.
The Pyrelith attack entered through three points Veridian Prime had already marked. The first broke the outer protection, the second fractured the reinforced formation metal, and the third destroyed the central physical relationship after most of its burden had been pulled into coalition control. Pressure surged through the remaining nodes, but without the common junction they could no longer redistribute cleanly.
Marephoros handled the release while Blue Sphere isolated each node in sequence. The northern ridge brightened violently before losing most of its load, the quarry released through a separate receiving formation, and the village node failed almost quietly because its buried support had already been removed. The network did not explode across the forest; it lost the ability to behave as one structure and became seven local problems the coalition already knew how to dismantle.
The formation elder who had been thrown from the cracked receiving plate remained conscious but could no longer use one arm safely. Sen visited him only after the last node was isolated, and the injured man apologized for losing the plate as though he had somehow embarrassed himself. Sen told him, "You kept it long enough for the next person to take over. That is what the position was for," then sent him toward the healers before the man could invent another reason to remain at the front.
The Route One report reached Xuanyin near midday.
She read it twice because she wanted the pressure sequence as much as the result. The seven-node system had died without Haotian's intervention, and the coalition had identified the common junction by observing physical continuity instead of pursuing whichever node became strongest. When she told Haotian that Sen's force had completed the operation with one serious injury among the specialists and several lesser wounds, Haotian simply asked whether the deeper shared line had been recorded before destruction.
"It was," Xuanyin said. "And Route Three reacted when Route One died."
That drew his attention toward the quiet southern structure.
The route had barely changed during the northern fighting. When the seven-node network lost its common junction, however, the quiet branch tightened through several internal relationships and sent a faint pressure pulse farther inward. The movement was too small to be compensation for the burden lost on Route One, yet too well timed to be unrelated.
Xuanyin placed the new reading beside the records from the hidden relay. "It noticed the loss."
Haotian followed the pulse through Universe. "Yes."
"Then we leave it alone."
They did.
Route Two was already becoming more difficult.
The canyon region began several miles east of the forest and deepened gradually until sheer walls separated the surviving roads by hundreds of feet. Old Blue Sphere bridges crossed three major gaps, two of them repaired with Abyss formation metal while a third had been replaced entirely by a darker structure whose supports descended directly into the canyon walls. The rift route did not appear to sit inside any one bridge, yet every pressure pulse changed the structures enough that Tianlan refused to move large formations across them until Marephoros understood the pattern.
The first heavy burden arrived while the leading mixed teams were approaching the southern bridge. The stone underfoot began vibrating before any visible formation brightened, and the Marephoros elder at Tianlan's side immediately told the front to stop. A younger Blue Sphere commander pointed out that demonic infantry were gathering on the opposite side, but the Marephoros elder answered, "They can gather all day if the bridge tears itself apart while we are standing on it."
Tianlan opened a brief sensory bond with the higher Falcon and surveyed the canyon from above. The second bridge farther north looked almost empty, while the third carried more defensive formations than either of the others and stood close to a dark structure built into the canyon wall. He released the bird's senses after several breaths and told the scouts to examine the second crossing without committing a full team onto it.
The Abyss fired across the southern bridge while the coalition waited.
Celestara cultivators intercepted the first ranged techniques above the canyon rather than directly over the road, sending damaged attacks into open air where possible. Two still reached the bridge, breaking stone along one side and increasing the vibration beneath the coalition front. Marephoros used Ninefold Returning Tide to distribute the shock through successive layers, allowing the bridge to move without letting one point absorb the entire impact.
The pressure eventually fell.
Tianlan asked whether they could cross, and the Marephoros elder said, "You can put people on it. That is different from saying you should." Tianlan looked across at the defenders and asked how long the structure would remain stable. The elder told him there was no reliable answer until they knew where the next pulse came from.
The scouts at the second bridge found almost no local pressure.
That should have made the crossing safer, but the emptiness bothered Tianlan more after Route One's report reached him. He kept the full legion away and allowed only the scouting formation to continue examining the supports. The Falcon above them changed its circle suddenly, and Tianlan opened the sensory bond just as dark formation lines ignited along the canyon wall.
The next burden transfer entered the second bridge.
Its pressure rose faster than the scouts could withdraw.
Tianlan released the bond and sent the warning through the command formation, but the northern support cracked before the last Blue Sphere cultivator reached solid ground. The center of the bridge dropped into the canyon with enough force to pull two people from their feet, and one fell beyond the reach of the Veridian roots that had caught the other.
The lower Frost Rainbow Falcon folded its wings before Tianlan consciously ordered it.
It dove through the canyon, reached the falling cultivator above a lower rock shelf, and caught the back of his armor in both talons. The sudden weight pulled the Falcon down several yards before its wings opened fully, and one tip struck the canyon wall hard enough to send loose feathers spinning into the air. Tianlan held himself back from taking the bird's senses and watched from above while it recovered, climbed, and deposited the Blue Sphere cultivator on a ledge where Celestara could reach him.
Only after the Falcon rose again without favoring the wing did Tianlan turn back to the formation. The Blue Sphere commander beside him asked whether the bird was injured, and Tianlan answered that it looked shaken but functional. "Leave it out of the next close pass," he added, directing the lower Falcon toward a wider circle while the other remained higher above the canyon.
The collapse clarified one part of the enemy's method.
The bridges were not passive structures carrying whatever pressure happened to reach them. The Abyss was pulsing burden through the route deliberately and using those changes to control when the crossings became safe or unstable. If the coalition treated low pressure as permission to advance, the network could simply move the next load into whichever bridge had the most people standing on it.
Marephoros stopped waiting for each pulse individually and began tracking how the burden traveled between the canyon walls. Veridian Prime moved along the approaches and traced physical conduits descending beneath the bridge supports, while Umbrel scouts searched for maintenance chambers where those transfers could be controlled. Tianlan ordered the leading formations to hold only enough pressure on the defenders to prevent them from interfering with the technical teams.
The demons tried to force movement by attacking harder.
Infantry crossed the southern bridge while its pressure remained low, hoping to push the coalition backward before the next surge arrived. Marephoros allowed the front ranks to build momentum and then used Returning Tide Guard to bend the charge toward the side of the road, where Blue Sphere fighters were positioned to attack the exposed formation. Veridian roots complicated the retreat without trying to hold the entire enemy line, and Pyrelith waited until the defenders compressed around their own shields before releasing a narrow destructive strike.
The demonic advance broke without damaging the bridge.
Tianlan refused to follow them across.
One Blue Sphere officer looked toward the retreating line and said, "They are giving us the far side." Tianlan watched the dark formation channels beneath the bridge brighten faintly and answered, "They are giving us the bridge right before the pressure comes back."
The surge arrived before the officer could respond.
The coalition was already off the span.
The bridge twisted under the load, and the demons on the far side had to retreat as well when one support cracked beneath them. Tianlan looked toward the Marephoros elder, who said nothing for several moments while feeling how the pressure entered the stone. Eventually he pointed toward the canyon wall and said, "The bridge is not where the load begins."
Veridian Prime confirmed it soon afterward.
Two major conduits descended through opposite canyon walls and met beneath the central region before branching toward the bridges. The pressure arrived there first, then moved into whichever crossing the Abyss wanted to strengthen, weaken, or overload. Tianlan studied the physical map and asked whether destroying the common junction would kill the route the same way Sen's force had handled the seven-node system.
The Veridian elder shook his head. "The load here is much heavier. If we break the junction while it is full, most of the canyon comes with it."
Marephoros answered the next question before Tianlan asked. "We have to empty it during one of the low periods."
"And if they change the pulse timing?"
"They already will."
The Abyss did exactly that.
The next three surges came at different intervals. The first arrived earlier than the previous pattern suggested, the second remained in the shared canyon junction longer than expected, and the third released only halfway before returning through another conduit. Marephoros adapted by monitoring flow rather than timing, watching the actual movement through the buried channels and refusing to treat previous intervals as promises.
Tianlan's role changed with them.
He stopped trying to predict when the bridges would become safe and focused on keeping the technical teams alive long enough for Marephoros to solve the pressure problem. The Falcons helped him watch the ridges and hidden canyon paths, but he used each sensory bond for only a few moments before returning fully to the battlefield. The lower Falcon stayed farther from the walls after its earlier collision and provided broader observation instead of another close pass.
A demonic reinforcement group appeared along a narrow northern ledge while the main defenders pressured the southern crossing. Tianlan bonded with the higher Falcon long enough to see the movement, then released the connection and sent only half the mobile reserve to intercept. The commander beside him questioned the small response until Tianlan pointed out that the central defenders were gathering near the third bridge at the same time. "If we empty the center for the ledge, they cross while we are looking away," he said.
The decision proved correct several minutes later.
The northern reinforcement group attacked the half-reserve and became fixed on the ledge, while the central defenders surged toward the coalition along a lower canyon road that bypassed the broken bridge. The remaining reserve met them before they could reach the Marephoros formations working around the shared junction. Tianlan moved with the center long enough to stop an Immortal-level demon from breaking the Blue Sphere line, then handed the fight to another high-level cultivator and returned to the wider command position.
The canyon route became a long contest over access to the buried pressure junction.
Umbrel eventually found the maintenance chamber controlling it, though reaching the controls required moving through a side passage cut directly into the canyon wall. Veil Shroud — Empty Silhouette helped conceal the approach where natural shadow and formation noise overlapped, while Silent Flow — Soundless Crossing carried the scouts over an exposed stone shelf watched by demonic sentries. Inside, the formation light made concealment less useful, so the scouts relied on timing and physical cover rather than trying to force their arts beyond what the environment allowed.
One demonic specialist detected them before they reached the central controls.
The first Umbrel scout used Shadow Binding to catch his rear leg long enough to interrupt the warning signal, while the second struck the active control relationship with Pulse Sever rather than smashing the plate. The specialist broke free and attacked, but the delay gave Blue Sphere fighters following the scouts enough time to enter the chamber. The controls remained physically intact.
Tianlan received the report while Marephoros prepared for the next heavy pulse. He asked whether the control chamber could stop the transfer, but the Blue Sphere specialist inside answered that doing so abruptly would trap the burden inside the common junction. "We can make it hesitate," the man said. "That gives you a longer unload window, but Marephoros still has to move the pressure."
The Marephoros elder beside Tianlan nodded. "Longer is enough."
The next surge arrived.
Ninefold Returning Tide spread across several teams instead of one formation, each accepting part of the pressure and changing its direction before passing the remaining burden onward. Blue Sphere receiving arrays along both canyon walls opened in sequence, while Veridian Prime reinforced the physical conduit so the rapidly changing load did not break the stone around it. Inside the maintenance chamber, Umbrel and Blue Sphere specialists delayed the transfer controls just enough to keep the shared junction from immediately refilling.
The burden fell.
Tianlan watched the pressure plates rather than the defenders.
The Pyrelith commander beside him asked, "How low?"
The Marephoros elder answered before Tianlan could. "Lower."
Several breaths passed.
Another receiving plate brightened and cracked along one edge, but the cultivator controlling it held long enough for a replacement to take over. The common junction continued unloading.
"Now?" the Pyrelith commander asked again.
The Veridian elder touched the exposed conduit and shook his head. "One more."
The demonic defenders recognized what was happening and attacked the maintenance chamber from two directions. Tianlan sent the reserve rather than abandoning the pressure operation, and Celestara descended into the canyon to block ranged support from above. The coalition did not need to win every fight before the junction could be destroyed; it only needed to keep the controls alive until the burden reached a safe level.
The final release entered the receiving formations.
The Marephoros elder looked at the pressure line and gave one short nod.
Tianlan turned toward Pyrelith. "Take the junction."
The first destructive strike broke the reinforced stone above the buried conduit. The second entered the formation housing Veridian had isolated, and the third destroyed the shared relationship after Marephoros had already moved most of the burden away. The canyon shook under the physical collapse, but the walls held and the remaining bridge supports did not fail.
Route Two lost its ability to pulse burden between the canyon structures.
The demons continued fighting, but their position no longer possessed the same control over the terrain. Blue Sphere formations advanced through the surviving approaches, Veridian Prime stabilized enough of the canyon floor for larger teams to move, and Marephoros gradually emptied the remaining local conduits. Pyrelith destroyed only the structures already confirmed isolated from the wider network.
When the Route Two report reached Xuanyin, she was already watching the quiet third branch.
It reacted far more strongly than it had when Route One fell.
The monitoring route accepted some burden, though not enough to account for everything the canyon system had been carrying. More importantly, several internal relationships activated at once and sent a sequence of pressure changes deeper into the network. Xuanyin compared the timing with the earlier response and said, "It is reporting again, but this time it is checking more than one thing."
Haotian followed the quiet route through Universe.
The structure had indeed been observing the other two routes rather than merely sitting between them. Its internal relationships changed when Route One died, changed again when Route Two began failing, and expanded substantially when the canyon junction was finally destroyed. The quiet branch had become the only surviving local path into the deeper network, making its monitoring function easier to distinguish now that there were fewer competing signals around it.
Xuanyin looked toward the Blue Sphere elders. "We keep it alive."
One of them asked how long.
"Long enough to make it tell the deeper network that the other two routes are still useful."
The elder frowned slightly. "They are not."
"They do not need to be. They need to look damaged in ways the network expects."
Haotian understood where she was going. The quiet route had been watching Route One and Route Two; if it expected to continue reporting their condition after damage, the coalition could imitate the pressure behavior of structures that no longer existed and observe how the deeper network verified those reports. He brought the Dao Palace of Creation into the work alongside Universe, preserving only the lawful continuity necessary to support believable false responses through the remaining route.
The Heaven Sundering Trinity Scripture was unnecessary. The Dao Palace of Destruction had no role in an operation whose value depended on keeping the monitoring system alive. Universe allowed Haotian to understand what the quiet route was reading and where its reports traveled, while Creation maintained the limited functional patterns the coalition used to imitate damaged branches without recreating the destroyed infrastructure itself.
Xuanyin rebuilt the false Route One signature first.
The imitation did not attempt to make the seven-node system appear healthy. That would have contradicted everything the monitoring route had observed before its destruction. Blue Sphere specialists reproduced a weakened response with irregular pressure, while Marephoros added enough fluctuation that the pattern behaved like damaged infrastructure struggling to compensate.
The monitoring route accepted it.
Route Two required a different imitation.
The canyon system had carried heavy intermittent burden, so a steady weak signal would have looked wrong immediately. Xuanyin had the coalition reproduce a low baseline with occasional unstable surges, allowing the monitoring structure to see something resembling a damaged route whose pressure control had become unreliable. Haotian used Creation only where enough lawful relationship remained through the monitoring route to carry the deception; he did not rebuild the destroyed canyon junction or pretend the physical network still existed.
The first verification probe left shortly afterward.
Xuanyin watched the timing closely and stopped one Blue Sphere elder when he prepared to answer immediately. "Wait. The river relay never responded the instant it was checked unless the local state had already changed." The elder asked how long she wanted, and Xuanyin chose an interval slightly longer than the last recorded response from Route One because a damaged route should not behave more efficiently than it had while intact.
The false answer traveled.
The deeper network accepted it.
Another probe came sooner.
Xuanyin smiled faintly without looking away from the pressure plates. "Now it is suspicious."
Haotian followed the outgoing relationship farther.
The deeper structure receiving the monitoring data was more complex than the river relay's verification point. Several pressure lines entered it from directions unrelated to the three routes the coalition had just attacked, suggesting that the quiet branch was only one observer among several reporting into a larger system.
The second response had to be different.
Xuanyin weakened Route One's false signature slightly and allowed Route Two's imitation to produce an irregular pulse at a time matching the canyon system's previous behavior. The monitoring route sent both states inward. Several breaths later, the deeper network returned a verification pattern that Haotian could follow through a broader spatial fold than before.
He began distinguishing multiple convergence relationships.
One came from the north.
Another from the west.
A third extended farther east than anything the coalition had followed personally.
The monitoring route did not terminate at a single relay. It fed a structure collecting several regional relationships at once.
Xuanyin asked Haotian whether he could determine its size, and he told her only that it was significantly larger than any relay they had handled so far. She did not press him for a label until the next verification sequence returned through the same broad spatial region. When Haotian confirmed that several major routes were being balanced inside the same system, Xuanyin finally marked it on the map as a convergence complex rather than another relay.
The coalition continued the deception because knowing a structure existed was less useful than understanding how it behaved.
Another probe left.
Xuanyin changed the false Route Two pressure before the response returned, imitating a route struggling to stabilize after a heavy pulse. The deeper system corrected more quickly than before and pushed a small amount of pressure back through the monitoring line. Marephoros accepted it locally while Haotian followed the relationship, discovering that the convergence complex was not merely reading reports; it was capable of sending adjustments back toward the outer network.
The next test made Route One appear slightly stronger.
The deeper response changed again.
Xuanyin compared the two and said, "It is not checking whether the routes exist. It is checking how much burden they can still take." Haotian agreed, because the returning pressure behaved like a controlled test of remaining capacity rather than a simple confirmation signal.
That made the monitoring route even more valuable.
The coalition let the deception continue through several cycles, each time varying the false damage states enough to remain believable. Blue Sphere specialists recorded every response, Marephoros controlled whatever pressure returned through the route, and Veridian Prime watched the physical conduit for any sign that the monitoring system was being prepared for remote destruction. Umbrel scouts moved through the surrounding maintenance network so no local demonic crew could interfere without being seen.
The Abyss eventually found the inconsistency.
The fourth major verification sequence arrived faster and heavier than the previous ones. Instead of testing one false route and waiting, the deeper system pushed separate pressure patterns toward both at nearly the same time, forcing the coalition to imitate two damaged networks simultaneously. Xuanyin let Route One fail the first test slightly rather than trying to produce an impossible perfect response, while Route Two answered with the unstable pulse pattern it had shown shortly before destruction.
The deeper network did not immediately sever the monitoring route.
That delay gave Haotian one more opportunity to follow the convergence structure.
Universe traced three major feeder relationships entering the complex. The northern route appeared highly reactive, changing frequently in response to local network states. A second carried heavier burden at longer intervals. The third remained quieter and seemed to hold a deeper spatial relationship than either of the others.
Xuanyin copied all three.
"Enough?" she asked.
Haotian followed the last return from the deeper system and confirmed the direction through the broken uplands beyond their current position. "Enough to find it."
The monitoring route changed before she could issue another test.
Pressure began pulling inward.
The Abyss had decided the local information could no longer be trusted.
Xuanyin immediately stopped feeding false branch states and told the receiving teams to prepare for withdrawal rather than fight the remote system indefinitely. "We already have the direction. Do not lose people trying to keep a compromised monitor alive because we enjoyed lying to it."
The Blue Sphere elder nearest her gave a tired smile. "I was beginning to enjoy it."
"Then enjoy dismantling it properly."
Marephoros began drawing the monitoring route's local burden into prepared receiving formations while Veridian Prime traced the final physical conduits. The remote network pulled harder, trying to strip whatever remained toward the newly identified convergence complex before the coalition could isolate it. Haotian used Universe to follow the spatial relationship and separate the local fold from the deeper route without involving the Dao Palace of Destruction.
Creation remained active only long enough to preserve the local monitoring function while the last useful readings were copied. Once Xuanyin confirmed that the direction, timing, and three feeder relationships had been recorded, Haotian allowed Creation to withdraw. The monitoring route became increasingly unstable under the remote pull, but Marephoros kept the remaining burden from collapsing into one conduit while Blue Sphere closed unnecessary control layers.
Veridian Prime identified the final hardened junction beneath a low stone platform.
Pyrelith moved forward and waited.
The deeper network began severing its side of the relationship.
Haotian followed the spatial contraction until the last directional fold had been fixed firmly enough in memory and formation record to survive the loss. He then released the local geometry and told Xuanyin that the route no longer carried anything they needed to preserve.
The order passed to Pyrelith.
Their first attack opened the outer housing, the second severed the reinforced formation metal, and the third destroyed the monitoring core after the local burden had been emptied. The physical conduit collapsed inward rather than exploding, and Veridian Prime held the surrounding ground until the pressure completely vanished. Marephoros gradually shut down the receiving arrays afterward.
Route Three was gone.
The wider network was not.
By then, Sen's northern force had completed the destruction of all seven nodes and begun moving wounded back toward the central staging area. Tianlan's canyon formation was still clearing demonic defenders from two side chambers, but the common pressure junction had been destroyed and the surviving bridges had stabilized enough that the army could eventually move through the region. The coalition had therefore removed two genuine feeder systems and one monitoring route without allowing any of them to transfer their final burden cleanly into the deeper structure.
Sen reached the command position near sunset with dried mud across the lower half of his robes. One of the Blue Sphere specialists beside him carried a bound arm from the receiving-array failure, and Sen made certain the man continued toward the healer formation instead of stopping at the map. Xuanyin looked at Sen and said, "Seven nodes, one common junction," and the elder answered, "It became simpler as soon as we stopped letting the bright ones tell us where to look."
Tianlan arrived later from the canyon with dust ground into his armor and a shallow cut along one sleeve. The lower Frost Rainbow Falcon was already resting after its collision with the canyon wall, while the second remained airborne with the Celestara patrols watching the approaches. When Xuanyin asked whether the injured wing needed treatment, Tianlan explained that the bird had struck the wall but showed no lasting weakness after the first few minutes, and he had removed it from close reconnaissance anyway.
He looked at the new mark on the map. "That is what the quiet route was watching?"
Xuanyin nodded. "It was watching both of your routes and reporting their condition deeper into the network."
Tianlan studied the three feeder relationships surrounding the marked region. "So destroying Route One and Route Two forced the quiet one to reveal more."
"It forced it to work harder," Haotian said.
"That was enough?"
Haotian looked toward the broad pressure record recovered from the final probes. "Enough to show us where the reports went."
Lianhua and Yueru reached the command formation after the forward scouting teams had already begun preparing to move. Neither had been needed directly in the Route One or canyon operations, and both had spent much of the day supporting the broader coalition formations, rotating wounded, and dealing with smaller demonic movements between the three regions. Yueru looked over the map and remarked that the next target finally looked large enough to justify how irritating the three routes had been.
Xuanyin gave her a sideways look. "That is your evaluation?"
"It has been a long day."
Lianhua examined the feeder lines instead. "Do we know if the complex is another distributed structure?"
"Not yet," Xuanyin said. "We know multiple routes enter it, and we know it was checking how much burden the outer network could still carry. Everything else waits for scouts."
Haotian followed the convergence relationship one final time through Universe. The larger structure sat beyond a region of broken uplands where several old terrain routes crossed around a plateau and valley system. Pressure entered from multiple directions, and something deeper beneath it responded faintly whenever the outer relationships changed, suggesting that even the convergence complex might not be the final organizational layer.
He did not extend farther.
The monitoring route was gone, and forcing perception through a remote active network without a local relationship to guide it would reveal more of Haotian than he could reliably learn in return. The coalition had gained a target; it did not need to turn that success into impatience.
Xuanyin assigned the scouts in several overlapping groups. Umbrel Spire would take the ground approaches and maintenance routes, Celestara would examine the plateau from above, and Veridian Prime would follow behind both to determine which terrain could support a large assault force without repeating the canyon's structural problems. Blue Sphere specialists went with every group because the next complex was already showing enough pressure to make casual proximity dangerous.
Sen looked toward the scout assignments and asked whether his people were going forward again.
Xuanyin shook her head. "Your formation spent the day holding seven nodes and a collapsing receiving array. Rotate them."
"We can still move."
"So can people who have not been fighting since sunrise."
Sen accepted that without another argument.
Tianlan asked whether he should join the first scouts, but Haotian told him to remain with the mobile reserve until the terrain around the convergence complex had been mapped. "If the scouts find three approaches, you will be more useful knowing all three than seeing one first," he said. Tianlan glanced toward the Falcons and nodded, understanding that the same logic applied to them.
The coalition did not gather around the destroyed monitoring route for a celebration. Route One's wounded were still arriving, the canyon force was clearing its last defensive pockets, and Blue Sphere specialists were dismantling the receiving formations used to control the false monitoring signals. Marephoros rotated exhausted teams toward the rear, while Veridian Prime marked sections of damaged ground that supply formations would have to avoid when they moved north-east.
Pyrelith spent part of the evening destroying isolated Abyss housings from all three routes. Their work was slower than the attacks used during battle because every structure had to be confirmed empty before destructive force was applied. One of the Pyrelith cultivators who had complained about being told to wait during Route One passed the command formation carrying a damaged formation plate and told Sen, "I have now spent more time being patient than burning anything."
Sen looked at the plate. "You seem healthier for it."
"I strongly disagree."
The exchange disappeared into the ordinary work of dismantling the battlefield.
Xuanyin remained over the campaign map until the first Umbrel reports began arriving from the approaches to the larger complex. Fortifications existed on multiple sides. Celestara had already identified demonic patrols rotating through the plateau rather than withdrawing from it, and Veridian Prime reported buried conduits spreading beneath more than one valley. The information was incomplete, but it confirmed that the coalition had finally reached something designed to organize several regional routes rather than merely relay information between them.
She placed four provisional markers around the new region and stopped before naming any of them as actual nodes. "We look first," she told the formation elders when one asked whether the marks represented expected intake positions. "After what the last three routes just taught us, I am not naming a structure before someone actually finds it."
Haotian remained beside her as the light faded across the uplands. The three routes behind them had forced different parts of the coalition to solve different problems: Sen's force had learned to ignore moving burden and find the shared physical dependency, Tianlan's canyon formation had learned to control pulsing load without allowing the bridges to dictate their movement, and Xuanyin had used the quiet route as an observer rather than destroying it on sight. None of those lessons required a speech because the people who had survived them were already carrying the knowledge into the next operation.
The scouts continued north-east while the remaining legions reorganized behind them. On the campaign map, seven-node Route One, the canyon system, and the quiet monitoring route were all crossed out, leaving only the broad region where several larger relationships now converged. The coalition had spent the day stripping away three different outer functions of the same network, and the information left behind pointed toward the first major convergence complex they had identified with enough certainty to attack.
