Chapter 35: The Cracks Below.

‎The city no longer slept.

‎Not truly.

‎Even in silence, people listened.

‎For the whispers.

‎For the shaking beneath the streets.

‎For the breathing under the stone.

‎Three days had passed since the ground split open near the cathedral, and already the capital felt cursed. Fires dimmed without reason. Water turned black in certain wells. Children woke screaming about eyes in the dark.

‎And everywhere—

‎Crows watched.

‎Vivi stood before the council chamber windows, staring down at the frightened city below.

‎"They fear me," she said quietly.

‎Behind her, the council remained silent.

‎No one denied it.

‎The crown rested on the throne beside her instead of her head, but its presence still filled the room like heat before wildfire.

‎Captain Taren finally stepped forward.

‎"The people are scared, Your Majesty."

‎Vivi laughed softly.

‎Not cruelly.

‎Just tired.

‎"They were scared before I ever touched the crown."

‎Taren's jaw tightened.

‎"With respect… things have worsened since you did."

‎The room chilled instantly.

‎Haken, standing beside the chamber doors, lifted his eyes slowly toward Taren.

‎The wolf in him noticed the fear beneath the man's words.

‎And fear was dangerous.

‎Especially in groups.

‎Vivi turned carefully.

‎"What are you trying to say?"

‎Taren hesitated.

‎For a second, regret crossed his face.

‎Then duty hardened it again.

‎"I'm saying the city believes the crown is changing you."

‎Silence.

‎Heavy.

‎Sharp.

‎The council members avoided her gaze.

‎That hurt more than the accusation itself.

‎Haken stepped forward immediately.

‎"She's still herself."

‎Taren looked directly at him.

‎"And how would a beast recognize the difference?"

‎The temperature in the room dropped.

‎Several guards stepped back instinctively.

‎Haken's claws slid free slightly.

‎Vivi saw it happen.

‎Saw the anger.

‎Saw the hurt.

‎And suddenly—

‎The windows shattered.

‎Fire burst from the throne behind her.

‎The crown ignited.

‎Everyone screamed.

‎Vivi staggered backward in horror as flames spiraled violently around the chamber ceiling.

‎"I didn't—"

‎But the fire kept growing.

‎Reacting to her fear.

‎To her anger.

‎To the crown.

‎Haken moved first.

‎He grabbed her wrist.

‎"Vivi. Look at me."

‎The flames continued roaring.

‎"Breathe," he growled firmly. "You control it. Not the other way around."

‎Her eyes flickered gold.

‎Then blue.

‎Gold again.

‎The fire trembled violently—

‎Before collapsing inward all at once.

‎Silence crashed over the room.

‎Smoke drifted through the broken chamber.

‎No one moved.

‎No one spoke.

‎And in that silence—

‎Taren looked afraid of her.

‎Truly afraid.

‎Vivi noticed.

‎That was the worst part.

‎Later that night—

‎Rain finally fell over the capital.

‎Cold.

‎Heavy.

‎Haken stood alone on the palace balcony, staring into the storm.

‎Something felt wrong.

‎Not with Vivi.

‎With the city.

‎The wolves beyond the walls had begun howling again.

‎Not warning.

‎Mourning.

‎Behind him, soft footsteps approached.

‎Captain Taren.

‎"I came to apologize," the captain said quietly.

‎Haken didn't turn around.

‎"You meant every word."

‎Taren exhaled slowly.

‎"She's changing."

‎"She's under pressure."

‎"She almost burned the council alive."

‎Haken finally looked at him.

‎"And you almost made her believe she was a monster."

‎Rain dripped between them.

‎Taren's expression darkened.

‎"You love her too much to see it."

‎"And you fear her too much to understand it."

‎For a moment, neither man spoke.

‎Then Taren reached slowly beneath his cloak.

‎Haken tensed—

‎But the captain only revealed a sealed parchment marked with black wax.

‎A crescent fang.

‎Cenric's symbol.

‎Haken's eyes narrowed instantly.

‎"Where did you get that?"

‎Taren looked away.

‎"It was left in my quarters."

‎"Open it."

‎The captain hesitated.

‎Then broke the seal.

‎Inside—

‎Only one sentence.

‎Written in dark red ink.

‎When the flame turns on you… remember who warned you first.

‎Thunder shook the palace.

‎And somewhere beneath the city—

‎Something laughed.
