If you're not a squire, why are you offering your hand to a Lord?
Notes:
I LIVE!! Thank you to everyone that read the story, left comments and kudos, to those who subscribed and also bookmarked the work. It means a lot to me. I do apologize that this took a while to update. My old laptop finally breathed its last breathe and could no longer be revived. Special thanks to my sweet and hard-working boyfriend that gave me money to buy a tablet so I can continue writing. Anyway, I'm blubbering at this point. Thank you everyone for the support.
This chapter is not Beta'd. I do proofread, but if there are still mistakes, please pardon them. I am doing this for fun so I don't really have the budget to hire an editor. Haha. On to the story..,
Chapter Text
Jinwoo can feel Igris apologizing inside his mind. He sent a mental image of him putting Igris on a ship to Valyria. He's half aware that he could have asked Igris if he has been here before, the knight has—and knows more about the realm than Jinwoo originally thought.
The word godfather was out of his mouth before Igris could even explain that this realm has no concept of what it is. Jinwoo dreads another misunderstanding, though not entirely. He knows there are advantages in being seen as a God than just another strong individual.
He already has the assistance of a lord; he feels half bad about taking advantage of Tywin, but it is for the betterment of all the realms, dimensions, or worlds. If he appeared in front of Tywin and he was just seen as another strong individual, he knew that the man could have fought him, and Jinwoo would have killed him, and then he would be struggling to figure everything out on his own. Okay, so maybe he wouldn't kill Tywin the moment the chance presented itself if he were just seen as another strong mortal. But there was no doubt in his mind that how things worked out was better than if they had fought. He was sure of that.
Maybe if he tells himself that enough times, he would feel less guilty about using Tywin's resources and looking at the man so much. He wanted to face palm, but he refrained from doing so. Instead, he kept a steady pace as he walked next to Tywin's horse.
They reached the castle, and Tywin was quick in telling one servant to inform Maester Creylen to prepare a map of Valyria for Jinwoo. He planned to follow the servant to Maester Creylen—wherever the man was. Jinwoo thought that the reason for the servants was so that someone could run all over the castle just to find where people are.
Tywin invited him to his solar, though, telling him that Maester Creylen would rush to them once he found a map. Jinwoo nodded and followed the blond. Tywin had one soldier call for his brother as well. Jinwoo wasn't sure why Tywin needed his brother, nor why they needed to head to his solar. Jinwoo was prepared to just take the map and have Igris take a team of shadows, and maybe Jima if they have to cross the ocean.
Tywin gestured to a chair once they were inside his solar. Jinwoo sat down, crossed his legs, leaned back, and rested his right elbow on the armrest. He couldn't stop himself from resting his chin on the knuckles of his closed right hand.
Tywin sat across him, a desk in between them. A servant served them a drink each, but upon smelling that it was wine, Jinwoo declined and asked for water instead. Tywin tilted his head to the side before opening his mouth. "Are you not fond of wine, my Lord? Or, is it not up to your standards?"
"I'm not fond of any spirits, truth be told." He nodded a thanks to the servant. "And, it's not like it takes any effect on me. The downside of immunity to poison, I suppose."
Tywin's eyes narrowed at that. "Wine is hardly poison."
"In small doses and occasional partaking of it, it wouldn't poison the body." He said. "But, it is addictive—just like any liquor, if the body ingests it too much and too frequently, the body begins to become dependent on it. The body wouldn't know what to do without it in the system any longer, and it damages the liver. Over time, it will slowly kill the body, one organ at a time, once the liver is damaged."
He tried explaining it in the most simplistic way he could. He had to be mindful of words that probably hadn't existed yet due to the current scientific discoveries in this realm. He wasn't even sure if sharing these things would affect the realm all that much. He was aware that Maester Creylen's writing to this Citadel place was important, though. Jinwoo knows he shouldn't get involved with the politics of this world, but incest he can't stomach. It's just wrong in all ways.
A knock on the door put the discussion of liquors to a halt. Kevan and Maester Creylen walked in the door. Jinwoo's eyes zeroed in on the piece of paper rolled in Maester Creylen's hand.
"Kevan, prepare a ship for a trip to Valyria." Tywin started, and Jinwoo's head whipped back to the blond. He didn't expect that. Tywin looked at him straight in the eyes. "How many of your army would you be sending?"
Jinwoo broke his relaxed posture. Instead of answering right away, he called for Igris. His shadow slowly appeared, kneeling down next to his chair. He can feel through their mental connection that Igris was sorry about not letting Jinwoo know of his knowledge. He sent a reassuring feeling through their connection. He wasn't sending Igris as a punishment but rather to investigate and search for clues. It needed to be Igris since he knows of this realm.
Igris sent a mental image to Jinwoo of a team of ten, including Jima, to help move the ship along if the winds weren't in their favor. Jinwoo nodded at that. "A team of ten with Igris leading and Jima to help with moving the ship if the weather is not cooperating." He said to Tywin.
Mentally, Beru asked for a head to be eaten so that he could be the one to translate instead of Jinwoo. The former ant King felt the task to be below Jinwoo's station. He mentally told Beru that he would try to ask for a head for him, but there is no guarantee, since eating someone's head is murder.
Tywin nodded at him and went back to looking at Kevan. "Ready a provision for sailors and the group of eleven that Lord Jinwoo would be sending."
"Oh." He breathed out, and it got both Tywin and Kevan looking at him. "My shadows don't need food. Their sustenance is my mana." Everyone's expression showed that they didn't understand what mana was. What could be the closest word he can use to describe mana? "It's…magic that is naturally found in living beings. My shadows feed off my mana."
"Very well." Tywin merely nodded at that. Jinwoo was starting to think that Tywin would never be shakeable ever. Something, he can't quite name, inside him just wants to see Tywin be shakable. "Maester Creylen, the map."
Igris mentally asked Jinwoo if he could stand up and take a peek at the man. He waved his hand as a permission. Maester Creylen took a large step back, Kevan tried to stay as still as he could, and Tywin looked at Igris as if Igris was meant to be there all along.
Igris relayed another information to Jinwoo. He hummed under his breath before speaking. "Since my shadows would be accompanied by humans, it's best if they anchor the ship a bit further away from Valyria, in case it is dangerous. My shadows can face anything, especially Igris, and they won't die, but I'd rather not have people risking their lives if possible."
Tywin once again merely nodded at Jinwoo. "That is agreeable, my Lord."
"Just call me Jinwoo." He said aloud, not knowing what it looked like to everyone else in the room.
Tywin had Kevan prepare what was necessary for the journey to Valyria. Though it seems that there isn't much needed, given that the shadows do not eat. His guts were telling him that the shadow beings also don't need rest.
A God was powering the shadows. He doesn't have even a close approximation of the army the God carries around with him. But Jinwoo talked about a shadow that could ferry the ship if the weather wouldn't cooperate. He can only imagine what type of shadow being that could be. A giant? He does not know.
When asked how long they needed to prepare everything, Tywin gave Kevan a day. He knows that it would be difficult to do so, but not impossible. As expected, Kevan delivered.
He stood at the port with Kevan and Maester Creylen. They were waiting for Jinwoo. The ship was prepared with expert sailors loyal to the Lannisters. The sailors were made aware that Tywin would be generous in rewarding them for this journey and their silence.
Soon enough, Tywin saw Jinwoo walking towards them. The God was unbothered by the staring of the people. He moved like he wasn't being guarded by two soldiers. Tywin was certain that he didn't need the guards but was willing to tolerate mortal frivolities. Tywin did wish the God to wear the doublet properly; if the God didn't have the doublet completely open, he would forgo it. Unfortunately, Jaime was starting to copy the fashion.
Once Jinwoo was standing in front of them, he was looking up at the ship with both brows raised. Tywin felt a sense of pride licking at the base of his spine. This is the very first time Jinwoo showed any expression of wonder since he had arrived. He wasn't much for crowing, but he did that—the Lannisters had impressed the Stranger.
"The ship is prepared to set sail, my Lord," Tywin stated.
Jinwoo made a 'tsking' sound. "I told you, just Jinwoo."
Tywin saw everyone around them tensing up.
"I guess, we only need my shadows now." Jinwoo turned to his side. "Come forth."
Tywin felt a sensation just beneath his skin that he couldn't quite understand. It was entirely foreign to him. There was nothing he could compare it to. But it made him want to chase the sensation. He had to exhale and inhale deeply to stop himself from making a scene.
In front of them stood Igris with other soldiers. Jinwoo nodded upon their appearance. He turned to Tywin. "Don't be alarmed by what you're going to see next." The warning was for everyone, Tywin was sure of that. Jinwoo turned his body to the sea. "Jima."
There was a gasp. Someone screamed. The smallfolk stood still in fear. In the ocean by the port was a dragon—unlike anything in any illustration Tywin had seen. Tywin wasn't even sure if he could call it a dragon. It has two hands, and its hands were tridents. But—its head, no doubt, was of a dragon.
It growled at the continuous screaming.
Jinwoo looked up at it with narrowed eyes. Its ears flattened on its head. It slowly shrank down to the size of a six-foot-something human. He turned to Tywin. "I apologize for that. Jima is quite…excitable."
If it were any other person, Tywin would have scoffed. "Understandable, my—"he cleared his throat. "Jinwoo."
The Stranger blinked at him. Then, a smirk formed on his lips. "Once they are far enough from the civilians, Jima would grow in size again, to keep up with the ship." He turned to his shadows and moved his head as a sign that they should get on the ship. Igris and the rest of the soldiers bowed at Jinwoo before making their way inside the ship. "They have an order to protect the sailors to the best of their abilities."
"I'm sure the sailors would be thankful for that."
They watched as the ship started to sail. Soon enough, it was far enough that Tywin saw Jima grow in size once more. It dove under the ocean, though; the only sign it was swimming next to the ship was its raised fins on the back.
They all made a move to leave the dock. Tywin felt Jinwoo looking at him, following his every move. He looked back at the God, a silent inquiry in his face.
"I have a shadow that wants a head," Jinwoo said simply.
"A head?" Kevan echoed in question.
Tywin was starting to wonder if the God needed anything for his mana.
"Beru." Jinwoo started. Tywin guessed that that's the name of the shadow. "He wants to learn the language, and he can absorb someone's skill if he eats their head." He continued. "I told him that there is no guarantee for him to get a head. I'm not familiar with this realm, but I would guess that killing people is against the law."
"The head is just for your shadow?" Tywin asked to make it clear. "What do you require for your mana?"
Jinwoo looked at him, confused by his question. "I guess mana potion if I'm low on mana."
Tywin remembered Jinwoo explaining that mana is naturally found. It could mean that mana could be made from parts of plants, animals, or even humans. But, thinking about it clearly, Jinwoo isn't demanding human sacrifice for power in a sense. He is asking for a human head and seemed to be fine with being turned down, being aware that there are laws in place.
The death penalty isn't just killing—technically.
Tywin stood next to his horse, about to ride it. Jinwoo, once again, draws his hand to assist Tywin. "You are correct that killing is against the law. We do have the death penalty for people who are caught committing murder. If…Beru is willing to wait; that can be arranged."
Jinwoo hummed under his breath. "Beru is willing to wait." Still, his hand was drawn, waiting for Tywin.
Tywin accepted the hand, the second time ever since meeting the God. He supposed there was no escaping it. The God declared himself the father of his children.
He was no sword swallower, but, thinking about this clearly, his family would benefit from having a God as his husband. In accepting this, Tywin would all but secure his family's legacy. The Lannister name would last for generations, centuries—even millennia.
There was only one answer to the question not yet posed by Jinwoo.
Sitting on the back of the horse, with Kevan and Maester Creylen present—with the common folk as an audience, making sure that Jinwoo knows that Tywin was serious about this, he raised his voice and spoke with determination. "Lord Sung Jinwoo, I accept this betrothal."
Kevan feels as if he is going to faint. He was aware that he swayed slightly while standing. He probably would have fallen flat on his bottom if Maester Creylen wasn't there to ever subtly catch him.
He wasn't sure what was worse. A Lannister child dedicated to the service of the Stranger. Or, the Lord accepts the betrothal from the Stranger.
Kevan wasn't even sure where the betrothal came from. The Stranger had only been with them for perhaps a few weeks. He knows for a fact that Tywin had spent very little time being alone with the God. They are all unsettled being around the God that they try not to be alone with him, except for the few times Tywin was.
He tried to think back on the moments Tywin could have been alone with the Stranger. Kevan doesn't know if it was enough for the God to start to feel for Tywin. He doesn't think so, but no one can tell what goes on inside the mind of the God.
He remembered the last time he was with them inside Tywin's solar. He remembered how relaxed the God was around Tywin, and how he casually told Tywin to use his name. Even insisted on it.
He wondered what had happened in between then and the Stranger's arrival. Was that time enough for the Stranger to feel for Tywin? How about Tywin? They all just lost Lady Joanna. Was his brother ready for this betrothal?
Also, how would the Faith accept this betrothal? The Faith has been against men being with men and women being with women. The thought got Kevan pausing. He was told that the Seven showed themselves using mortal vessels, and the Stranger had approved of how they portrayed his being as someone with no face. Kevan wonders if the Stranger would move to a different vessel to make the Faith accept the betrothal. He will have to think of a way to ask the question without offending the God.
Then again, will the Faith really go against the wishes of the Stranger regardless of the God's vessel?
The crowd started cheering. It brought Kevan back to the present. Now was not the time to be wondering.
He got on his horse, the same as Maester Creylen. They shared a look for a moment. It was good to know that he wasn't the only one taken aback by the announcement.
As they made their way back to Casterly Rock, the common folk kept their cheering. They were calling out to Tywin and the Stranger, but no one tried to approach them. In all of Kevan's years being alive, this was the calmest cheering he had seen from the common folk.
Once back at Casterly Rock, the Stranger drew his hand again to assist Tywin. This time, Tywin didn't hesitate in accepting the hand offered. The God was staring intensely at Tywin, and his brother's eyes were locked in with the Stranger's. Kevan wanted one of them to look away. It feels too intimate for him to witness, and from Maester Creylen's squirming atop his horse, Kevan knows that he wasn't the only one who feels and thinks so.
The Stranger withdrew his hand and cleared his throat. "I need to head back to my realm for a while." He started. "If you could welcome Igris, if they come back and I haven't returned?"
Kevan noticed that the question was almost poised…shyly. He can't quite believe what is happening at the moment. A part of him wants to head to the Sept and pray to whichever God can answer why he has to be the one seeing all of these. He may be the second son, but his opinion was that Tygett should be the one witnessing this.
"Of course, my Lord." Tywin nodded slightly. "Would they need anything in particular upon their return?"
"No, nothing in particular. Igris would know to order Jima to make himself smaller, not to alarm people." The Stranger said. "And, they would probably come back with some loot. It's best not to touch any of it, in case anything is dangerous or cursed."
"I'll have whatever items they find be sent to your room and inform the servants not to touch any of it."
"That would be for the best." The Stranger agreed. "I'll be back as soon as I can. For now, goodbye?"
"Farewell, my Lord. I pray your safe journey."
The two of them remained standing still. Kevan just thought it was ridiculous. And as if the Stranger heard his thoughts, the God turned to him and also greeted him farewell. Kevan and Maester Creylen uttered their farewells.
The Stranger then held his hand up and out. Out of nothing, the air in front of the God distorted into something. It was a circular dark mass of cloud with a touch of violet. Without needing to ask, Kevan already knew that was how the Stranger arrived.
The Stranger gave them one last nod before entering the dark mass of cloud. A few seconds passed after the Stranger entered, and it disappeared from their sight. Kevan felt his whole body feel relieved. He exhaled noisily enough that it got Tywin turning to him.
"Let's meet in my solar," Tywin said to him. "Have a servant call Genna. We have much to talk about."
"Right." Kevan merely said. He didn't waste a second. Truth be told, he needed another person to bear the burden of this betrothal. He knows that he has Maester Creylen's sympathy, but it's not the same as being Tywin's sibling. Also, Genna would say the things that run through Kevan's mind without care for what Tywin will tell her.
He found Genna instructing the new wetnurses they have hired. The new ones were definitely better at their job than the last one. Kevan also noticed how Cersei seemed to be more…accepting of Tyrion. He couldn't imagine how Tyrion would have been treated by Cersei if the Stranger hadn't voiced out Joanna's wishes to her. Best not to think about it, he figured.
"Tywin wants us in his solar." He started.
"What for this time?" Genna said in a haughty tone.
He stared at Cersei and figured that she was far enough from hearing. "For his betrothal to the Stranger."
"What!"
Cersei definitely heard that.
