Chapter Text

Jinwoo never thought that the misunderstanding between him and Tywin was that big. Truth be told, it was massive. But he was trying not to think about how massive it really was to stop himself from panicking.

Perhaps, it was already too late. Perhaps, he was already panicking. Still, outwardly, he doesn't show it. He can't show it. He doesn't know what all of this means and how it came to be.

He needs time to think about it.

Jinwoo was glad that people in this realm see him as a God. He didn't need to give a reason about his coming or going, even after he was assisted in his decision to send a team of shadows to Valyria. He left for Korea, and soon he found himself walking by the sidewalk of Seoul.

Inside his mind, some of his shadows were asking him, why did he run away? He told them that he didn't. And he asked Beru if he wanted to follow after Igris to Valyria.

He declared himself a God-father of Tywin's children. He initially thought that it was only right. But from the way people reacted upon hearing the word 'baptism,' it became clear that the concept doesn't exist in that realm.

He thought back to how he first found Tywin, by the ocean with a baby in hand. He understands grief and how it changes people, how it makes people act in ways they don't usually do. And how it can leave a person almost catatonic.

That's probably it, he thought to himself. Tywin was by the ocean, holding his child and forgetting about time entirely due to his loss. Jinwoo knows how a loss of a parent can affect everyone in the family, especially the spouse. He knows that he only managed because he was not the man of the family; he was responsible for his family.

It's the same for Tywin, of that Jinwoo was certain. He wasn't even adding the fact that Tywin has a title longer than his arm. The man can't buckle under pressure—can't make a mistake. There are far too many people relying on him.

How did the misunderstanding come to be, though? They don't understand the concept of God-father, so Tywin jumped to the conclusion that it was Jinwoo proposing to him? Can it be that simple?

It can't be, Jinwoo told himself. He doesn't know Tywin well, but the blond was smart. He has to be because he was a lord and a 'hand of the king,' whatever that means. Jinwoo slightly wonders what the king does in that realm that he needed a hand. Shouldn't he have…an advisor?

But he digressed. Jinwoo thought that he must have done something more than declare being the children's God-father. He thought back to everything he has done ever since he arrived at Casterly Rock. He must have done some…cultural faux pas.

Did people see how he looks at Tywin? He asked himself quietly. He did his very best to be stoic in front of everyone, but Tywin's face was just far too pretty. Plus, he had always been into blonds. He's not even taking into account Tywin's green eyes that were touched with gold. It was unique. He had seen the eyes of Tywin's family, and aside from Tyrion, Tywin was the only one with that color of eyes.

That must be it, he thought to himself. He couldn't properly hide how much he was admiring Tywin's appearance, and everyone saw it. In medieval times, people weren't so forward—from what little he knows about it anyway. He must have been walking around Casterly Rock all but screaming how he has the hots for Tywin, so the Lord thought he was asking for the man's hand in marriage.

He sighed. He stopped walking to just think. How was he going to set things right, though? If people ask, he can't deny that he was admiring Tywin's physicality. With that in mind, if he broke up the betrothal, people might think badly about him, and he wouldn't have Tywin's resources in his search for the Monarchs.

He was aware that he could search for the Monarchs all on his own, but that realm was different from the Demon Castle he once ventured into. From what he has learned so far, most of the people there are humans, and they have a governing body as well. It's rich in history, but all that knowledge was not readily available for everyone. He has a feeling that only the rich and powerful have access to the information that he would need for his search.

He turned and saw that he was in front of a shop that sells artifacts. Behind the glass window, he saw an armor of red with black lining and a violet plume. At the back of his mind, he can feel Beru's question.

Why was Jinwoo hesitating on the betrothal? A king, after all, needs a queen, or in this case, a consort. Besides, Tywin's resources would be used to protect Jinwoo's family; that's an important part of choosing a royal partner, Beru added.

Upon being reminded about what's at stake in his hunt for the Monarchs, Jinwoo started thinking of a way to work around or along with the betrothal. Tywin must be getting something out of this as well, Jinwoo thought; no man would simply agree just because someone was making moon eyes at them. It's going to be beneficial for both of them, Jinwoo decided. He can also state to Tywin that they can have a long, long period of betrothal to get to know each other. If at the end of it Tywin decides to not go along with the betrothal, Jinwoo wouldn't force him.

He exhaled at that. To him, that seems a logical enough plan going forward. He was trying to ignore that tiny voice in his brain pointing out to him that he wasn't even thinking about the possibility that he may be the one who would want to end the betrothal. He doesn't need to remind himself that he rarely likes people or voice out his hope for the betrothal.

He entered the shop. He hadn't watched any period drama with Jinah, but he knows gifts were a must. He should also get gifts for the kids. Perhaps a story that has moral lessons—something about not just trusting a God and accepting non-verbal proposals. He doesn't want any of the kids to be as accepting as Tywin was about Gods or engagements; who knows what trouble they will find themselves in? Not everyone was like Jinwoo that actually, no matter how far off it seems, means well.

He shook his head at the thought and asked the person behind a glass counter how much the armor displayed by the window was. He also thought of buying some fried chicken and pickled radish for his mom and Jinah.

Jinah learned how to be strong at a young age, the same as her oppa. They didn't ask for it; then again, no child would ask to be put in the position they were in. Still, they did their best.

She wasn't blind to all the sacrifices her oppa made for her and their mom, no matter how small they were. As for the bigger sacrifices Jinwoo needed to make, Jinah wished he hadn't. But she knows that her brother would carry the weight of the world if needed to make sure that she remained safe and happy. With their mother awake and living with them once again, she knows that Jinwoo would do the same for her.

Jinah had her worries, though. It's not the same worries as Jinwoo has; she was sure of that. Maybe Jinwoo would even think that her worries were silly. But she's someone who can think far enough to the future to worry about Jinwoo finding a partner in life. To be honest, she was fairly certain that Jinwoo hadn't had any romantic relationships in his life because of his responsibilities and previous rank as a Hunter.

Now that he had reawakened, Jinah was not naive enough to think that women suddenly become interested in her oppa. If she doesn't think too hard about it, it would seem like it is a good thing. But if she does think about it hard enough, well…she doesn't want her oppa to be with a girl that was after his status and whatever materialistic thing Jinwoo could give her. Jinah knows Jinwoo enough to know that he was a man that would spoil someone if he could, and now, well, he could.

Was she just being irrationally jealous of the future girlfriend her brother will have in the future? No, it was her job as Jinwoo's sister to make sure that he doesn't end up with anyone who would use his feelings against him. She was sure that Jinwoo would do the same for her. It's just what siblings do: protect each other.

Jinah could see that the silence around Jinwoo wasn't just because he had a long day. She could tell that there was something more than that. She none too subtly peeked at her mother to see if the older woman could sense it as well.

Their eyes locked for a moment. Her mother gave her a subtle nod in return. Jinah understood the unspoken message.

She put down her chopstick and dramatically pointed at Jinwoo. "Who is it? "Her question came out in the form of a yell that startled Jinwoo.

Her eyes narrowed at that. Her brother was hard to startle even when he was still an E-rank Hunter. Something was really going on.

"Confess!" She yelled all out this time. From the periphery of her eyes, she noticed her mother sighed.

"What are you talking about?" Jinwoo said. His expression genuinely looked confused.

"You're thinking about someone," she clarified. He had a shocked look on his face before he cleared it quickly. But not quick enough for her to not see. "A-ha! There is someone."

"I don't know what you're talking about," Jinwoo answered, but Jinah could see that he was almost sulking at being caught.

Before Jinah could say anything, their mother spoke up. "It just seems like you're distracted today, Jinwoo," she started off gently. "Did something happen while you were…in a gate?"

Jinwoo was quiet for a moment. "I—uhm, there was a misunderstanding between me and someone. It has kind of gotten out of control? I think?"

"Uh, what?" Jinah asked dumbly. The words Jinwoo put together seemed to make sense, but at the same time…not?

"I think—I think I'm in a courtship with someone?"

"What?! How can you not be sure about this, Oppa? You think? You think? It's either you are or you aren't. Which one is it?"Jinah asked the question through gritted teeth.

"Jinah," she turned to their mother, "calm down." Their mother turned to Jinwoo. "Do you like her?"

This time, Jinwoo's face was turning pink. From his cheeks to his ears. It was the first time Jinah saw that look on her oppa. So, the answer to that question was obvious enough.

"She's a he, actually." Jinwoo cleared his throat.

"I'm sorry. What?" Did Jinah heard that correctly?

"He," Jinwoo repeated, and this time it seemed like he had enough courage to share more. "He's a father of three and is a very important man."

Their mother gasped. "Is he taking advantage of you, Jinwoo?"

"What? No." Jinwoo was genuinely hurt by that. "I feel like I'm the one taking advantage of him." Now, her brother was just pouting. Is that really the face of a man who would take advantage of someone? No, Jinah said to herself.

"I feel like Omma and I are missing something here." She crossed her arms. "I say it's time to fess up." Jinwoo cringed, which means that Jinah was into something.

"Well, it could have been that I—that I was…obvious." Jinwoo all but whispered the last part. "I also guess that the cultural differences made it even more obvious?"

"Okay," their mother breathed out. It seemed more to calm herself down than them. "Do you like him? He didn't force you to be in the courtship? Do you want to stop the courtship?"

"Uhm." Jinwoo was looking at everywhere except for Jinah and their mother.

Jinah swallowed hard. She shared a look with their mother. "Well, a brother-in-law would be better than a sister-in-law, I guess." She cleared her throat. "You say he's important? Is he rich?"

"Jinah," their mother scolded her lightly. What Jinah said helped Jinwoo to look at them, though. Their mother smiled at him. "What's important is you like him and you're not being forced, Jinwoo."

"He's really not forcing me, and—and I do like him," Jinwoo admitted shyly. "But, there is a little problem." Jinah and their mother looked at him encouragingly. "He's from inside a Gate?"

Somehow, it made sense in Jinah's mind. Her oppa, who hadn't ever shown any interest towards anybody, liked a man inside one of the gates. From inside her stomach something bubbled up her throat and nose that she started snorting. Soon, it became a loud belly laugh.

"Oh, my God. Oppa—oppa, only you would have a complicated relationship like this." She kept on laughing, which made their mother sigh next to her, but she could see the relief in Jinwoo's face.

Tywin, at first, couldn't believe his ears. The Stranger claimed his children, naming himself their God-father. Jinwoo needed not say the words to Tywin; he was wise enough to hear the unspoken claiming of himself. From the simple offering of his hand, the suggestions over his children's bearing, and the looks given to Tywin.

It took a while for him to completely understand, but once he did—well, Tywin would be a fool to say no to the Stranger.

The God was kind enough, gentle enough. Tywin saw it in how Jinwoo treated his children and Tywin himself. He knows that if he were to act as if he didn't understand, Jinwoo wouldn't take his soul right there and then. But Tywin wasn't thinking about what would happen to him if he said no; he was thinking about what would happen to his family if he said yes.

He knew that he cannot order the God around, but if he pleased the God enough, he would be rewarded. Isn't that what the Septons and Septas say about Gods and prayers given to them? About how if one acts in a manner that pleases the Gods that person would be blessed? If he were to ask for a blessing from the Stranger, he would ask for a blessing that would reward his whole family—for the legacy of his house.

He detests whores, but he was also a pragmatic man. He would hire the best whore from Lys to teach him how to pleasure a man—a God, if needed. There was very little Tywin would not do to secure his legacy.

He cares not what the rest of Westeros would say or think about him. Sheep can bleat all they want; they would stop making noise once a lion was around. Besides, with him being next to a God, no one would dare insult him or belittle him.

Let them play their games, Tywin thought; he would secure his legacy.

The door of his solar opened and closed. Genna and Kevan appeared, one calmer than the other. Tywin took a sip of wine to brace himself and then remembered Jinwoo's words about wine.

"Have you completely lost your mind?" Genna's question came out as a yell. "Accepting the Stranger's betrothal! Right in front of the common folk as well. You might as well damn yourself."

"He had claimed my children as his." Tywin stood up from his chair, hand making a cutting motion in the air to shut Genna up. "He declared himself their God-Father, inside the sept, in front of the septon." Genna's expression turned from questioning to distress. "He didn't wait for my children to be offered through baptism; he simply claimed them. Who knows what he would do if I said no?"

Kevan made a noise of distress. "There must be something we can do, brother."

"The Septon stuttered his way through his conversation with the Stranger," Tywin informed Kevan. "He was as clueless as we are; we will find no information from them as to how to remove the God's claim over my children. And, even if we manage, do you think we will be safe from the Stranger's wrath?"

Genna slumped on a chair, face filled with anxiety. Kevan's whole body tensed up. Finally, Tywin thought, the consequences of telling the Stranger no were finally dawning on them.

"I accepted the betrothal." Tywin kept his tone sure. "This way we may negotiate with the Stranger. This way there may be a way to secure our legacy."

"But, Tywin…" Genna's voice was frail with worry.

Tywin won't ever admit it to anyone—even his family—but he and Genna always had a closer bond than the rest of his siblings. They both understand sacrifice in a way the rest of the family doesn't understand. He can see how Genna wants to protect him from this, but it seems that this would be another thing that would draw similarity between the two of them. Tywin thinks that he still experienced a better fate than Genna. He did, after all, have years with Joanna.

At the thought of his late wife, Tywin could only sit back down. A part of him knows that his first marriage brought nothing to the Lannister name—only his children. And, after learning more about their family line, he understood that he was incredibly selfish in his choice. He had blamed Tyrion for Joanna's death, but Tyrion was the result of their cousin marriage. He has no one to blame but himself. He can only make it up to Joanna by honoring her last words.

Could he even make it up to her? He had already given Tyrion to the Stranger's service. He can only try and negotiate with the Stranger now.

He took a fortifying breath. He cannot be weak. He cannot falter. He was a lion of Casterly Rock. He shall land at the top in any way he can.

"We must prepare," he told his siblings. "We know not much about the Stranger nor of the forgotten ways of the Faith. We need information regarding marriages between a God and a mortal. We must send a letter to Citadel and the High Sept. We need to ask about forgotten traditions of the Faith as well."

"I'll have Maester Creylen write up a letter to the Citadel," Kevan said. "I've been told that a copy of books regarding Northern legends will arrive two months from now. Maester Luwin of Winterfell wrote that he will have to create written copies of Northern Folktales in Winterfell since most of them are passed by word of mouth."

Tywin nodded at that.

"I'll write the High Sept," Genna said, her voice back to her usual tone. "Sept Serion would have sent a letter already, after meeting the Stranger. I can't imagine he wouldn't—he's probably writing one now," Genna said meaningfully. "We're going to have to announce this betrothal to the Faith. Once we do that, the rest of the realm will know."

"We don't have to unless they write to us," Tywin said. "I have announced it publicly, knowing that Sept Serion would write to the High Sept. If the High Sept would ask if the news has validity to it, then we answer. Until we are questioned directly, we don't say anything but prepare," he added. "If the High Sept ask why you are inquiring about the forgotten traditions of the Faith, tell him that your faith has grown deeper."

Genna nodded at that as she got up to her feet. "I'll go ahead and do just that." Before going, she asked. "What of your job as the hand of the king? You'll need to head back to King's Landing."

Tywin took a moment to think over what he would do. "I'll ask for more time before returning." He knows that he needs to consider a lot of things before moving forward—everything that happened while he was in King's Landing, the future of his house. He can't just give them an answer.

Kevan walked to the door with Genna. Tywin saw the look his brother gave to him before he walked out of the door with their sister. Tywin could almost appreciate the worry Kevan and Genna were showing—but he doesn't have time for worry. He has a God he's meant to please. He's playing a different game now.
