Chapter Text
Jinwoo is amazed by the time difference between this world and his. He has been here for days, and a day had not passed in Korea. He was taking great advantage of it, learning as much as he could from Maester Creylen.
He sits with Cersei and Jaime during their lessons. Sometimes, Tywin won't be there, most of the time, he will be. The Maester and the Lord would both answer his questions, and in turn, he answered theirs. Although he doesn't know exactly how his words matter to them, all that he knows is that it does. He doesn't want to question it for now.
Learning about the Targaryens was…disgusting, if he were to be honest. It was no wonder that their titles left a lot to be desired. One insane king after another. People don't notice it, Jinwoo can tell, the small clues of insanity through the line of this mortal monarch. But, he can—mental illness comes in a lot of forms, and while he isn't quite well-versed, he knows enough to see the signs.
Maester Creylen was quick in writing down the signs and symptoms he shared, always asking for permission first before writing. Informing Jinwoo that he will be sharing his findings with the Citadel—a place of scholarly pursuits, Jinwoo learned. With how medieval everything was, Jinwoo was certain that it would take a while before they were as developed as his world. He wonders if sharing everything he knows would make it faster and if the other Monarchs would be able to sense the change in this realm. If they could even sense it.
Today was a little different, Cersei was to learn from a Septa and Jaime was to learn from a masters at arms. Jinwoo tilted his head slightly to the side upon seeing them. They were both trying their best to avoid making eye contact with him. It made him smile and made it easier for him to follow Cersei to the training yard.
Jinwoo can tell that Cersei has the grit to learn how to sword fight, but being a girl would mean that she wouldn't have the arm strength to hold a proper sword. Even if she can, he doesn't think she can do it for long. He'd suggest a dagger or a knife, but he can tell that the twins are keeping this a secret from their father. Jinwoo was slightly unimpressed that no one could tell the difference between the two.
As Jinwoo expected, Tywin became present—right next to him. He wonders if the father will notice. Jinwoo turned slightly to see Tywin's reaction. It was the narrowing of the eyes that Jinwoo saw first. "Excuse me, my lord," Tywin said to him.
Jinwoo appreciates how proper Tywin was, but a part of him also wants to see the man sputter or stutter. Jinwoo hummed to himself, what an errant thought. "She's actually doing quite well." That made Tywin stop in his tracks to turn to him. "I'm sure what she's doing isn't considered right by this world's standard, but every girl should learn how to protect themselves. After all, danger lurks everywhere."
There was profound understanding shining in Tywin's eyes. Jinwoo had seen pretty boys before; it's not new to him. But eyes like Tywin's are distracting. It was green mixed with a tinge of gold. The man was close to ethereal.
There was a beat of silence before Tywin spoke up again. "Do you have suggestions, my lord?"
"A dagger or a knife." He said casually. "It's lighter and easier to hide—what with the sleeves that women here prefer, I believe. She can surprise her would-be attackers, much better if laced with poison, but she would have to learn about poisons if she wants to lace them with it."
It was Tywin's turn to him. Jinwoo can tell it was one for contemplation. "Did you decide to observe the training because you knew it was Cersei?"
Jinwoo gave him a casual shrug. "Maybe."
"I'm surprised you weren't more interested in learning about the Fate," Tywin said. "It seems that a lot of the Seven's teaching has been lost."
Something in Tywin's tone suggests Jinwoo may know more than he was sharing. Technically, Jinwoo does know more than the man about certain topics. But what Tywin was referring to, Jinwoo has no idea. It seems like his staring prompted Tywin to speak more, though.
"It would only be logical if a God wanted to correct and spread lost teachings, wouldn't you agree, my lord?"
That got Jinwoo pausing. He didn't realize that Tywin—and everyone else, it seemed, saw him as a God. Igris and Beru, in his mind, are whispering to him that in some way he is. He has dominion over the dead. He may call them shadows, but they are born from souls extracted from the fallen. While he doesn't know yet the full extent of his capabilities, with how rapidly it is growing, it doesn't seem like it has an end. He also noticed that Igris squirmed, so Jinwoo decided to question Igris later.
He thought about it for a moment, whether he would be honest with Tywin or not. He sighed. "I suppose this could be another learning moment. If you could give me directions to the church, it would be appreciated."
"Church?" Tywin echoed in question. "You mean the Sept—unless it was called a church before."
"If a Sept is a place of worship, I suppose they are the same," Jinwoo answered easily enough.
"Of course." Tywin nodded. "Let me escort you to the Sept, my Lord. I'll call for a horse."
Horse, Jinwoo's brain halted at that. He doesn't really know how to ride a horse. "I'd rather walk, but you can ride your horse. I'll walk beside you." Tywin didn't question him, but Jinwoo could see the question through the man's eyes. He can appreciate Tywin's ability to hold his tongue. He couldn't help but smile at the man. "I'm more adept at riding a wyvern than a horse, Lord Tywin." The man stared. "It's a…kind of dragon, two legs instead of four, but has wings still and can fly."
Tywin hummed. "I'll call for my horse then, my Lord."
"Just take your time." He said as Tywin walked away. He mentally poked Igris, though.
Tywin noticed how the Stranger observed everything around him the moment they were outside of Casterly Rock. He wondered for a moment if Lannisport was up to the Stranger's standard or if the God found it lacking. He supposed he might never know. Though he took a very close note of how Jinwoo didn't care how the people stared at him in awe.
He didn't bother wondering how people outside of his castle knew about the God. He knows that servants talk and the presence of the God would be accepted by the small folk and questioned by nobles. It's hard to look at Lord Sung and not know immediately what he was. He also knows that he wouldn't bother trying to convince noble families of the Stranger's presence in his lands. If the Stranger deemed the noble families not worth the air they breathe for their denial of his existence, then it wasn't Tywin's problem.
Tywin can tell that while the people were awed by the Stranger, they weren't falling on the ground to catch his attention. They weren't asking for favors. After all, what favor can they ask from the God of Death? Perhaps when they are about to breathe their last breath, they will ask for mercy.
They reached the Sept and the Septon was waiting for them with the novice. The old man's hand was shaking ever so slightly, face pale and fear not quite hidden, and the novice wasn't any better. Tywin dismounted the horse, and he stood next to Jinwoo, but the God didn't make a move. He turned to Jinwoo, the God, has his head tilted in the direction of the Septon. Tywin took the silent instruction easily and walked a step ahead of Jinwoo.
Tywin introduced Jinwoo to the Septon. The men before them bowed shakily and low. Tywin noticed that Jinwoo returned the bow, not as low, but it was enough to show respect for the Septon. He doesn't know if he should be relieved by that action or not.
The Septon walked beside them as they entered the Sept. He explained the founding of the Sept and why it has been decided that he would be the Septon of the Westerlands. His babbling was constant while Jinwoo surveyed each statue surrounding them. The Stranger paused at the feet of his statue. Tywin refrained from commenting on how the Faith has gotten the image of the Stranger all wrong.
The Septon noticed, though. "I will have the statue corrected, my lord—I'll also write to the High Septon so that all of your statues will be corrected."
Jinwoo hummed. "There is no need." He said, turning to the Septon. "It's appropriate for the God of Death—for death has no face."
Tywin noticed the Septon shiver at that, from fear or awe he wasn't sure.
"You're missing one more though," Jinwoo said.
"One more, my Lord?" Septon asked.
"Yes, one more." Jinwoo elaborated. "The Absolute Being split the light into eight beings." He tilted his head to the side. "I suppose no one would know of them unless they revealed themselves through a vessel. It's either they didn't find a vessel or the Monarchs were driven away from this realm so they didn't see the need to reveal themselves, unlike the others."
"We—I—My lord—" Tywin was almost ashamed of how tongue-tied the Septon was. "It's in the teaching of the Faith that—that the seven is one God, and that they represent different facets of that one God."
"It could have been that some teachings have…faded over the years." Tywin decided to speak up. "Lord Sung had pointed out 'baptism', which is a ritual to dedicate a child in the service of a God."
"I—that's not—I've never heard of it before." The Septon said lamely, eyes shifting to the Stranger, searching for any reaction from the God. But Jinwoo's façade remained stoic; not even Tywin can read anything from it.
Tywin then saw Jinwoo close his eyes and heaved a sigh. The God rubbed the bridge of his nose. "It matters not." He said simply. "I was there, I witnessed it, I shall be Tyrion's God-Father." He paused. "Perhaps be a God-Father for Cersei and Jamie, as well. It's only fair."
Tywin was certain that the last part was not supposed to be heard by him or the Septon. Also, God-Father, the words rattled around Tywin's mind. Does that mean he would be the children's Mortal-Father? If that is the case, what does that mean between him and the Stranger? One cannot be just a child's father without being connected to the mother, or the father in his case.
Jinwoo then made a very obvious displeased noise. After a beat, he turned to Tywin. "Do you have any maps to Valyria?"
"Yes, I do, my Lord." Tywin knows that he has to find out what the implications would be for him, for his entire family and his legacy. But right now, Jinwoo is commanding his attention. He wasn't sure what happened, but within the one second to the next, the God is irritated.
"I hope you don't mind if a shadow of mine borrows one." Jinwoo turned to walk to exit the Sept.
Tywin and the Septon kept pace with him. "I don't mean to overstep, but may I know what for, my Lord?"
"When the Absolute Being split the light, he did the same with the darkness." Tywin can hear the determination in Jinwoo's voice. "They're called the Monarchs, beings that cause calamity and chaos. They have power over certain creatures—"
"Like dragons," Tywin said.
Jinwoo stopped to look at him. He didn't seem mad to be cut off; he looked like he was considering Tywin seriously. "Yes, that is right." He continued. "It's now my responsibility to hunt down these Monarchs and eliminate them. I will send one of my shadows to Valyria to find clues on where to find them."
"What would that mean for the realm?" Tywin couldn't help but ask. He and Jinwoo stood next to his steed. The God drew his hand to Tywin, meant to assist him to get on the horse. Tywin looked at the hand offered to him, but didn't accept it right away.
"Safety and peace," Jinwoo answered. "The sooner I find them and eliminate them, the safer every realm will be and peaceful."
Tywin accepted the hand Jinwoo offered, aware of what it meant now.
Septon Serion watched as Lord Lannister and the Stranger headed back to Casterly Rock. He couldn't take his eyes off the pair. He couldn't stop his hands from shaking either. He let out a shaky breath.
He just met a God. He just met the God of Death and lived to tell the tale. He didn't think that the whispers of a God being in their presence were real. He was prepared to give a sermon to the person who was pretending to be.
Then, Serion saw the Stranger. He wore Lannister red and gold, but he didn't mind showing skin in public. Delicate the protruding of the Stranger's collarbone may look like, but he stood with his shoulders squared. The Stranger's stance shows a sureness in each of his steps, but without hurry. As if nothing could strike him down. Serion supposed that nothing can, for who can feel the God of Death?
Once Lord Lannister dismounted his horse, Serion thought the God would approach him. Instead, the God waited for Lord Lannister and let the Lord take the lead. Serion took close notice of how the Stranger walked a step behind Lord Lannister.
He made sure to bow as low as he could in front of the God. Unbidden, the memories of him praying mostly to the Crone came to mind. He wondered if that was the Stranger looking through his memories. He decided then and there to pray to the Stranger as much as he does the rest of the Gods.
Lord Lannister introduced the Stranger as Lord Jinwoo Sung. Sung, his mind momentarily stuck in that. Sung meaning songs have come and go, people have listened, and perhaps echoes were the only thing left of the song.
Serion doesn't know how the name Jinwoo was connected to Sung, though. He supposed that it must be the name of a forgotten language. He knows that names have meanings after all.
He showed Lord Sung the Sept, telling him of its history and his own. Serion tried to observe Lord Sung as closely as he could, trying to read the expressionlessness of his face. He found nothing. He could only take note of the color of Lord Sung's eyes.
Finding out that there were teachings from the Gods they had forgotten had Serion feeling fear. The Gods are merciful, but the loss of their teachings, he wasn't sure how the Gods would react to it. They were supposed to ensure that the laws of the Gods would remain and be observed. And the dedication of children to the Gods' services, Serion could tell that it was an important practice. The proof of its importance was right in front of him after all.
Even though the Faith and humanity, it seems like, have forgotten about Baptism, Lord Sung would still honor it. He even took it upon himself to be the God-Father of Lord Lannister's children. Subtly indicating how he wouldn't snub his responsibility towards them.
He wonders if Lord Lannister understood what the God wanted from him. Serion thought that the Lord must have. He saw Lord Lannister pause before accepting the Stranger's hand. Lord Lannister was also known for his intelligence. Serion is half certain that Lord Lannister knew what the God wanted before he accepted the offered hand.
Serion had married nobles before. He had seen the light in their eyes as he married them. He knows when a marriage was political or a love match. He didn't have any word to describe the light behind the Stranger's eyes as he stared at Lord Lannister. It was far too intense for a mortal to decipher, but it was familiar enough for Serion to understand that Lord Lannister had, possibly, a God in his hands—or the other way around.
Either way, Serion thinks, this changes a lot of things for everyone.
He swallowed hard, then turned back to the Sept. Letters. He must write to the High Septon immediately.
"Septon Serion," the novice, Lucan, spoke up beside him. Serion forgot about the young man. He turned his head slightly. The poor young man was sweating and shaking. Lucan wetted his lips before speaking. "Are we in danger?"
Serion sighed. "You heard Lord Sung. He is to hunt these monarchs and eliminate them." He reminded the Lucan. It would not do for them, the men of Faith, to start panicking. "We must hold fast, pray to the Stranger and the rest of the Gods more fervently than ever before. Our faith cannot falter, Lucan."
Lucan nodded passionately. "Of course, of course." He inhaled deeply. "Should we hold prayers for the Stranger that is open to the public? If our prayers help the Stranger in his hunt, it would be best to have as many people as there are to pray to him, yes?"
"Yes, that is a fine idea, Lucan." Serion finally found it in himself to smile. "We can look over the rituals we have every week and see what time we can have a prayer for the Stranger." He said. "For now, we must write to the High Septon. It seems that there are rituals that the Faith has forgotten that the Gods still honor. We must bring it back for the Gods to know we are always keeping Faith with them."
They made their way to Serion's solar. Lucan was quick to grab a parchment and a quill for himself. He thanked the younger man as he seated himself behind the table.
Then, he found himself unsure of what to write.
'High Septon Aran, heed the words of the common folk if they have reached you speaking of the Stranger walking amongst us.' He decided to start his letter as such. 'I have met the Stranger, and there is no denying his Godly nature. He had spoken of a ritual called Baptism, which is a ritual that offers children to serve a God without taking a vow, it seems. He has claimed Lord Tywin Lannister's children as his own because of this ritual, and Lord Lannister had accepted.'
He hummed under his breath before adding. 'He revealed that there are one other God out there and that all of the Gods are created by the Absolute Being by splitting the brightest light. He also revealed that the Absolute Being split the Darkness, and from it came about monarchs, beings of chaos and calamity, and they have control over creatures. The Stranger spoke of it as his responsibility to rid the world of monarchs for the safety of the realm.'
He dipped his quill once more. 'I shall try to request an audience with the Stranger as I am sure that you will have questions, the same as I do.' He signed the letter with his name and made sure that the letter bears the seal of the Sept.
He handed the letter to Lucan. "Make sure to use the quickest raven we have."
