The Journey Begins 1.2
Stumbling as I left the flashing colours behind, I found my focus drawn by a harsh cold before I could even recover from the dizzying experience.
Ignoring my disorientation, I mentally navigated my inventory and switched my clothes to a prepared set of thick, woolen clothes as well as a cloak, gloves, boots and a scarf. Even bundled up as I was, wherever I'd ended up was still too cold, though.
Just as I was contemplating returning home, I felt what I could only describe as a mental nudge telling me to move ahead in the cave I'd apparently ended up in.
If not for me having a perk from the CYOA that should protect me from mind-altering powers, that'd have been the final push needed to make me rush back home. Instead, it ended up convincing me to explore this place a bit before leaving.
In hindsight, I should've prepared more before just jumping realities. I had at least prepared clothes for most situations in my inventory but they just weren't warm enough and I knew, without a doubt, that I wouldn't show up here anytime soon again if I could help it.
But, seeing a weird green crystal growing out of the floor where what was almost certainly the power I got from this place had guided me to, I was pretty sure that the benefits would be worth it.
Focusing my mind until I could feel my newest power running through my veins, I tried to will it to pull the crystal chunk out of the floor and, while it didn't succeed, it certainly moved it ever so slightly!
Laughing as I got a pretty good idea of where I'd ended up, I focused my mind once more and pulled until the crystal flew into my gloved hand.
I'd have happily left after that but my power seemed to nudge me somewhere else and I was definitely too curious not to follow it now that I had a good idea of what it was.
Left, my new instincts seemed to tell me and I did as I'd been told, finding a bunch more amber crystals growing out of the wall after turning around the corner.
As it turned out, whatever planet I was on right now was either enough of a Force nexus to stimulate my Traveler abilities and give me some force sensitivity or it was really just facilitated by me entering this reality.
"Wasn't there something about kyber crystal mines usually being near a Force nexus or am I misremembering things?" I might not have recognized the planet but, between the crystals and the instincts I got which also came with some telekinesis I really needed to work on, I was reasonably certain that I'd ended up in a Star Wars world and, to be specific, a cave system full of kyber crystals.
I didn't particularly like sci-fi but I already knew I'd go back to this reality at some point. Specifically after getting at least enough of a resistance to the cold to not hate everything about this planet because I had no idea if I could just make myself appear in another random place of this specific reality rather than just going to a place I'd previously visited.
So, yeah, I'd have to prepare for environmental extremes before coming back but, at least for now, I'd grab myself a bunch of kyber crystals. I had no idea how to make use of them but I would know in due time. Probably, at least.
The Force didn't seem to care about me just taking most of the crystals and the two times it seemed to want me to leave crystals alone, I did, so I happily decided to hoard as much as I could even as the Force guided me somewhere deeper in the cave system.
Lightsabers, blasters and I was sure there was a lot more uses for these beauties aside from them looking really nice and me liking crystals so, really, I was just investing into my future once again.
It felt weird to be guided by a sentient or at least semi-sentient power but I wasn't particularly worried and the certainty that I could've just chosen to stop listening at any moment made it hard for any real fear to form in the first place.
The Force wanted me to get something from deeper in this cave and it felt like whatever it was would be beneficial for me to have so I'd take it.
I did hope it'd be close to me, though, because it was still terribly cold and had gotten to the point where I used my magic to shorten the distance between me and the ends of cave corridors.
In the end it took another thirty or so minutes of walking before I finally reached the rather large cluster of violet crystals growing out of the floor that the Force seemed to want me to have and swiftly stashed it into my inventory.
As I did so, it felt like the crystal came alive, humming happily and sharing some warmth with me before disappearing into my inventory for the time being.
Interesting though all that was, I was really tired of the cold.
Towards the end, I had even stopped looting whatever was around because of the cold so, now that I was seemingly done, I did my best to send a feeling of appreciation to the Force before willing myself to return home.
Safe to say that my first world didn't give me exactly what I wanted. Oh, the ability to use the Force even in other realities thanks to my Naturalized Foreigner perk was nice but I didn't actually know all that much on how to use it to do stuff other than some minor telekinesis as well as to consider the advice it gave.
Ideally, I'd wanted to get access to magic from another world so I could spend time learning it. Admittedly, that's basically what the Force was and I was just biased against it because of my dislike for sci-fi as a whole but it was still true that I had gained no knowledge on how to do more complicated stuff with the Force.
…Force lightning would've been really cool to have, to be honest. Who didn't want to use that while screaming 'Unlimited Power'?
Alas, I'd have to find a holocron or something to get my hands on that Force technique – or any Force techniques, really. I had telekinesis and what was basically a voice that sometimes whispered into my head on what I could do to further my goals but that's really all I'd get out of the Force until I either got a spaceship or ended up somewhere else in that reality.
Anyways, with my first world having ended up being not nearly as useful as I'd have liked it to be, it was time for me to move on to Plan: Skip School Forever.
Considering the fact that I actually liked school to some degree simply because I loved learning and just found the classes to be too slow, the title of the plan honestly amused me.
"What about your friends? Wouldn't you miss them if you stopped going to school?" Mom's question in response to me voicing my desire to become a dropout almost made me snort but I stopped myself in time.
"They're Missy's friends, really. I just hung out with them because she did." I answered, not even lying. "And I want to found my own guild so staying in school when I don't need to would just waste my time."
"I'll arrange for you to take your GED." Dad decided, clearly seeing that I'd be stubborn about this and almost certainly wanting me to remember that he chose to help me when mom didn't want to.
I hated that that was what their relationship had devolved into but, with a smile I'd practiced in two lives, I beamed at him, "Thank you, dad!"
"It's no problem, Lilian. After all, a good father should support his daughter's dreams, shouldn't he?" Nobody missed the smug look he shot mom as he spoke and I saw Missy flinch in the corner of my vision, only barely stopping myself from doing the same. "I will, of course, also set up everything you might need for that guild of yours."
I could feel his smug satisfaction, his assurance of his 'victory' against mom. Similarly, the Force let me sense mom's anger and her worry for me and Missy's indecision mixed with worry, fear and anger.
What I couldn't sense, Omniglot let me read from their body language and I was certain then and there that I'd never again fail to know a living being's feelings unless they had perfect control over their body language and some way to block the Force.
It didn't improve my ability to act on that information but it removed any uncertainty I felt in regards to my assumptions on what people felt because I no longer had to assume but instead just knew. I was mildly worried what'd happen if I were to rely on it and end up talking to a golem or something that had no body language but I'd deal with that if I encountered it.
Either way, knowing the feelings of others was probably the greatest benefit for someone like me who had mild social anxiety that they tried really hard to hide.
"For now, since you won't have to go to school for at least another three days, why don't we spend the day buying you two some equipment?" Mom cut in, simply not wanting to lose to dad while also wanting Missy and I to be as safe as possible when working as hunters.
Trigger events had a neat little benefit of excusing you from having to go to school or work for a couple days because sending traumatized people who'd suddenly gotten magic right back into their daily lives could cause a wide variety of issues.
"That sounds nice." Missy answered, relieved despite the fact that a part of her still worried about how much things had started spiralling out of control lately.
I could relate to the feeling. It was why I had already begun to get as much back under control – specifically my control – as possible. Nothing was quite as terrible as feeling like there's a storm around you and you just have to wait until it either kills you or doesn't.
One benefit of being rich was that we could afford to custom order equipment for both Missy and myself, though the downside of that was that it wouldn't be ready for a week and a half despite us picking fairly basic enchantments for our outfits.
And, while Missy was still deciding on which weapon she wanted to use, I had already fallen in love with a delightful purple rapier, its guard holding an amplification orb that made it look spherical aside from where the metal around it connected to hilt and blade.
Not only did I love rapiers, I also had some mild experience in using them – though that'd been in a different body – and they'd pair well with the magic I shared with Missy. Shortening the distance between an opponent and myself before skewering them with my new sword would almost certainly be an effective strategy.
The Traveler power from the CYOA also came with a general aptitude for all weapons so I wouldn't just flail around with it. I could just tell how I'd have to move to attack and those instincts even extended to aerial combat for reasons probably related to the wings I had yet to use.
"Are you sure that you don't want a weapon yet, Missy?" Mom asked as we began to leave the city's hunters market.
"Yes, I'm sure. I don't know how to use any of these, anyways, so I'll have to think about what I want to use." Missy replied, exasperated by mom's constant questioning.
Mom was about to say something when a hole in reality swirled into existence not even a hundred metres away. "You might regret that choice soon, sis." I told her, already walking towards the Gate, my sword appearing in my left hand.
"What are you doing?" Missy hissed at me, grabbing my right arm to pull me back.
Grinning at her over my shoulder, I pointed my rapier at the Gate, "According to the regulations of the PRT, hunters have a duty to deal with any Gates they estimate to be within their capabilities to deal with if they appear before them and this one is emitting a pitiful amount of mana."
"You already have a plan, don't you?" My sister's eyes narrowed at me, suspicion clear in her gaze.
"Of course I do." I answered almost lazily. "You'll keep monsters away from us and I'll kill them with my sword."
"That's it?" Missy asked, baffled by my simple plan.
I laughed a little at her expression. "That Gate has less mana coming out of it than we emit by breathing. If I had to guess, it's E-Rank or maybe D-Rank. No monster at that level will be a challenge for us."
Quantity of mana wasn't everything but it mattered a lot in estimating dangers in Gates. Monsters with little mana could only be so strong. Similarly, they could only be so fast and would, therefore, completely and utterly fail to cross the distance Missy would create between us and them.
We were honestly more support-type hunters than offensive ones but, with a sharp-enough sword, we could simply support ourselves.
"Fine. But if your plan doesn't work, we're running." Missy declared and I was happy to let her have that assurance, not that it would be needed.
Combat Instincts, the Force, an aptitude for using weapons and our magic were quite powerful already.
"Be careful!" Mom called out to us, visibly worried.
"Don't worry, we've got this!" I called back, already amused.
Narrow the distance, thrust, pull back.
With Missy essentially being the shield, I was the sword, the stone golems around us decreasing in number with every thrust of my blade.
Interestingly enough, Omniglot synergized with Combat Instincts and my Force senses. Both read the body language of those around me and, apparently, that worked even on golems in combat since even those needed to build up momentum.
It was how I knew when it was safe to create a narrow 'tunnel' to a golem's core through which I'd thrust my rapier. There'd simply be no stray movements in the precise moment in which I attacked because I could tell how my target would move before they did.
In the end, this was a useful little distraction despite how easy it was because it gave me a greater understanding of not only my combat abilities but my magic.
With each and every use, I optimized my magic further, refining my control over the instinctive ability while trying to figure out how I did it.
"You look kinda creepy." Missy told me after we were done and I put a golem's corpse into my inventory, grinning all the while. "Maybe cut it down like ten notches."
I couldn't stop myself, I laughed. Surrounded by broken golems, I laughed and laughed and laughed, unable to stop myself even though I knew that Missy was probably worried by it.
The golems around me and the exhilaration I felt while destroying them were signs that Immortality Failsafe was truly working! Normally, most of my emotions would fade rapidly but, during that entire fight, I'd felt excited and happy!
Besides, this fight had done a lot to make it sink in that I now had magic in a way that even travelling to another world hadn't. Destroying these golems with magic and swordsmanship made it sink in that my life had ceased to be the boring, ordinary life I'd always hated but had become something straight out of the realm of fantasies!
How could I not laugh at it all? At the exhilaration of knowing that I'd really never be bored again? That there were countless worlds out there from which I could learn and witness all kinds of things?
After a little while, my laughter turned into giggles until I calmed down enough to stop and resume my task of throwing corpses and what mana crystals were around into my inventory.
"Are you alright?" Missy asked, her voice filled with worry.
"Better than ever!" I confirmed, still riding the high from it all, though that didn't seem to decrease her worry. Throwing another body into my inventory, I very dramatically spun to face her on a whim. "And you?"
"Kind of exhausted but otherwise fine." Missy replied, clearly still unsettled but willing to pretend she wasn't. "Can I just stuff bodies into some pocket dimension, too?"
"You should be able to do it, too." At least, Identify Talents identified my Inventory ability in her. "Just try willing your inventory to show itself or something like that. I…just knew how to do it so I'm unsure how to help you figure it out."
Much like how Missy couldn't see the windows of my inventory – I was pretty sure they were just in my head and this was a way for the power to be visualized – I couldn't see hers but, considering the fact that a golem corpse just disappeared after she pulled on it moments after my explanation, I was fairly sure that she had figured it out.
"Neat. I'll have to play around with this a bit later." My twin muttered, a shaky grin on her lips.
After looting the rest of the dungeon, we made our way to the only untouched area – presumably the boss room – and I decided I'd try something new upon encountering a particularly large golem, the core of this one being almost as large as Missy and I were tall.
"Same strategy as before but I'm trying something new." I informed my sister and, while she gulped at the sight of the large enemy that I considered to be nothing more than fancy fodder – though I could very easily have been wrong about that – she still nodded in response.
And, with the distance between me and the golem ever growing as space stretched, I observed the golem's movements and, most importantly, which parts of it functioned as its joints.
Then, focusing my mana, I compressed the space one of those joints in its left arm took up as it tried to punch towards us once more and grinned at the rough grating noise reminiscent of two rocks grinding against each other as well as how the golem's limb began to form cracks near where the shrunk joint was.
I couldn't shrink space with living beings inside but the golem wasn't a living being. It was a creature made out of stone and mana and so I'd assumed that it'd be possible for me to do this.
Against living beings, my offensive capabilities were limited to my rapier for now but golems like this one that was only animated by magic but otherwise a functional body would find their own movements turned into weapons against themselves.
Of course, crippling its limbs wasn't enough to defeat the golem but stabbing its person-sized core for about fifteen minutes after its limbs tore off from the strain did the trick.
Getting the damn thing into my inventory was a lore more problematic but, apparently, using the Force to lift the golem's separate parts one by one and move them slightly to the right while my hand was on them was enough to shove them in. It took a lot of focus to succeed but I wanted my loot.
"You didn't have telekinesis yesterday, did you?" My sister's unspoken question of whether this was the work of my Grimoire or our shared Traveler power was one I noticed.
And, in the end, there was no reason to lie to her. "I travelled to a new world yesterday. It's really cold but has a neat power system that includes telekinesis and a danger sense."
"Take me there later. I want to get that, too." Missy demanded, hands on her hips.
I shrugged in response as I shoved the golem's core into my inventory, having to use telekinesis to lift it so my inventory would acknowledge it as me moving it. "Sure. Just come to my room after dinner and we'll go for a quick visit."
I had no idea if Missy shared my Naturalized Foreigner power to let her basically tell reality 'the Force definitely exists here and works as it should' despite none of that being true but this should be a good test of it.
Besides, I had no intention of just hoarding my power. Every useful power, I'd share with her if I could so she'd never be too weak to survive something.
Notes:
So, fun fact: This used to be the first half of chapter 2 and I planned to post it next Monday. Instead, in editing chapter 2, the end result became too large for me to feel comfortable keeping it as one chapter and I decided that, to make up for it, I'd just post this as a shorter chapter but three days earlier than I'd meant to.
Also, for people who know a lot about Star Wars, feel free to suggest planets to visit and stuff to do because my knowledge of Star Wars is limited to the nine 'main' movies and Clone Wars.
Last but not least, about the dungeon, it's meant to be there solely to help Lilian realize that she's an adrenaline junkie. It's also filled with pretty weak monsters so space-bending magic and a pretty good sword are enough to kill anything in it. There will be actually dangerous encounters for Lilian in the story but I feel like immediately dropping an A-Rank or S-Rank gate onto my protagonist would be too much. I'm not going for an angst-filled story, after all, and throwing two teenagers who've never fought before into a Gate at all is already a bit much, as Missy's perspective in the next chapter will show
Anyways, hope you guys like the chapter and, unless I change my mind yet again, the next chapter will be out on Monday
