Chapter Text

Missy

Clearing that Gate might've been kind of exciting but it was also terrifying. One wrong move from me, one moment of hesitation, and we might've died. I'd undoubtedly do it again in the future but I really should practice before just jumping into a Gate again.

Except, Lilian wouldn't hesitate. Not if she felt she could deal with whatever was inside. The moment my sister found something interesting, it'd develop into an obsession only kept under control by her other obsessions.

And Lily had apparently really enjoyed the entire experience so I had no doubt she'd happily do it over and over again every chance she got.

"Hey, Lily?" I asked just as we were about to leave the Gate.

"Yeah?" She replied casually, completely unconcerned by the fact that we could've died.

I took a moment to think on how best to word things before speaking, "Can you promise me that you won't jump into Gates you're not sure you can clear?" Lily wasn't above lying, finding loopholes or generally doing just about anything she felt like doing except for breaking promises or deals.

She was really weird about those, actually. If she said something along the lines of 'it's a promise' or 'it's a deal', she'd do her best to uphold her side of it right up until someone else broke it first.

That'd be really useful to know except for the fact that she made maybe one promise a year and she never agreed to deals she didn't feel like entering. I was just about the only person she'd happily make promises to and I didn't ask for them all that often and it was usually just for small stuff because I was genuinely worried about the lengths she'd go to to fulfill her promises.

"I could promise that I won't enter Gates I'm not fairly sure I can clear. Without knowing the Gates beforehand, I'd be unable to enter any, otherwise, since they might turn out to be red Gates." Lily said, still somewhat casual but with a serious undertone.

"I'll take it." I responded without hesitation. Anything that'd make it less likely for her thrill-seeking to kill her was good.

Besides, I also wanted to keep going into Gates so asking her to stay out of them entirely would've made me a hypocrite.

Lilian

Stepping out of the Gate after making a promise I wasn't exactly happy about, I cursed past-me for becoming so obsessed with keeping promises that it was a trait I now had to deal with.

And then I cursed myself while I was at it because I'd clearly taken too long if there was a Protectorate raid squad here already.

I wanted to get back home and read a book until I'd take Missy to the Star Wars world, not deal with people who benefitted enough from their PR teams that I was jealous.

'Note to self, find someone to handle my PR for me.' The thought amused me and I held on to said amusement so it could carry me through the bothersome conversations I'd have to deal with.

It was moments like these that made it very clear that, despite how much I could enjoy talking to people, I was definitely an introvert because I'd happily sacrifice any of these people for an interesting book to read.

'I wonder if I could do that.' I mused to myself, using the tried and true strategy of distracting myself with pleasant thoughts before the approaching artificer that was Colin Wallis in his heavily enchanted as well as complex armour even had a chance to sour my mood.

At least the Unwritten Rules didn't exist in this world due to the fact that everyone above C-Rank could sense mana to varying degrees. I knew myself well enough to know that I'd eventually taunt people with their real names out of boredom otherwise. Conversations got much more interesting through spontaneous emotional upheaval in the other party.

"Hello Mister Wallis." I greeted him before he had the chance to speak. "Don't worry, the Gate has already been dealt with. It wasn't even difficult."

"I can see that, though I have to say that entering a Gate without at least waiting for it to get ranked was incredibly reckless. Especially considering the fact that neither of you have been part of a proper raid yet." He admonished us and I was willing to bet that he fully intended on eventually turning this into a recruitment pitch.

I wasn't interested in letting it get that far, though. "Much as I appreciate your worry, my sister and I found the Gate to be well within our capabilities and knew as much before entering. Now, if you'll excuse us, we do still have other things we have to do today."

Ignoring the way Missy sighed, I began to leave and made sure my twin was following before walking just quickly enough to not make it seem like I was running away from the conversation.

As far as I was concerned, I wasn't. I was just rushing to my lovely books back home.

Books that had to wait because mom was at the edge of the area that had been cordoned off because of the Gate and swept us both into a hug. "I'm so glad you're alright!" She exclaimed, not quite tearing up but painfully close.

…Genuine worry was one of my weaknesses. I had no idea how to deal with that in a manner that I didn't consider disrespectful. I could just act the right way to comfort her but those words wouldn't be mine. They'd be something I'd observed in the past and chose to adapt to fit the situation and that's what I did when I wanted to manipulate people, not when reacting to heartfelt emotions from someone I cared about.

The problem was that my genuine words would be blunt and lacking the finesse I preferred. They also had this tendency to be misunderstood, which was the entire reason why I'd always used words I'd witnessed others use when I didn't want to be misunderstood.

"Yep, we're alright and I think we should get ice cream on the way back home to celebrate us clearing an entire dungeon without even getting scratched." Missy told mom seriously and I shot her a grateful look in response as I both felt and saw mom relaxing, the worry and painful relief not quite gone but less overwhelming.

Missy wasn't a manipulator like me but she was a lot better at dealing with heartfelt emotions without messing it up.

"You can have one scoop each and that's an exception." Mom declared after several moments, a small smile on her lips.

"Thanks!" Missy and I declared simultaneously and I nudged my twin with my shoulder with a happy smile of my own after mom began to walk towards where she'd parked the car.

That one was for getting us ice cream, of course.

"Alright, you ready?" I asked, the two of us standing in my room wearing heavy coats and thick clothing beneath them.

Missy nodded, looking as uncomfortable as I felt wrapped in all this fabric. I'd have just switched to this outfit as a preset through my inventory but Missy hadn't figured out how to do that yet so she'd talked me into suffering with her.

'The things I do for my sister.' I thought, hoping I wouldn't have to do this again. Helping Missy figure out something that was instinctive for me and which I couldn't see her version of was difficult so I'd just have to hope that she'd figure it out before we'd make another visit to a place with extreme temperatures.

"Just a warning: This will probably be a bit disorienting, especially since I'm essentially pulling you along instead of you doing it yourself." I warned her while holding out my hand for her to take.

"I can handle it." She declared confidently.

Shrugging, I focused on the world I'd visited before and pulled myself towards it once more. Only, towards the end of the corridor of flashing colours, the Force advised me to leave at a slightly different 'spot' than before.

In most situations, I wouldn't have just followed along but this felt like an offer. The Force ultimately didn't care whether or not I'd do it, nor did I feel an unnatural urge to follow its advice. It gave the option and I could take it or leave it.

'Guess I'm a cat 'cause my curiosity might kill me.' I joked in my head even as I mentally readied myself to just return home again with Missy in tow should we actually end up being in danger.

And, considering the cold that assaulted us the moment we reappeared in physical space, I was fairly sure that we'd still ended up on the same planet, just in a different spot.

That our teleport led us directly infront of a yellow-skinned girl cradling her left arm close to her body with her right while stumbling through the icy cavern was probably why the Force had sent us here.

"Do you need help?" Missy asked shortly after noticing the girl herself and it wouldn't have surprised me if the Force had been responsible for her recovering from her first experience of travelling worlds so quickly. It'd probably done the same for me in hindsight.

The…probable jedi padawan looked up in shock at the sound of my twin's voice but didn't seem to really understand her. And the first couple words she said after regaining her bearings sounded like gibberish to me until Omniglot did its job and just dumped all the knowledge of the spoken language on me, though it noticeably didn't give me the written language yet.

"We're naturally capable of teleporting across large distances." I informed the girl, speaking the language that was surprisingly easy to pronounce considering how strange it had sounded to me before I'd learnt it. "Us showing up here was an accident and probably the will of the Force. So my sister and I can help you if you'll let us."

She was silent for a moment before nodding. "Alright. I don't suppose you have another one of those cloaks, do you?"

I did, of course, have a spare cloak in case I lost one or it got damaged. I hadn't wanted to part with it but it wasn't my only spare, I was just a hoarder now that I had a limitless pocket space I could access at will.

"Since when can you speak…whatever that is?" My sister questioned while I gave the girl a cloak to ward her from the cold better than her robes could.

"Since she started speaking it. One of my abilities lets me learn languages really quickly." Without Omniglot I certainly wouldn't have been quite as confident about jumping into new worlds. Communication was key in a great many regards, not least of which being the fact that learning new things through books would be quite difficult if I couldn't read them.

"Thank you. I don't suppose you two could get me back up to the surface? The path I was using collapsed and my master is waiting up there." If I had been alone and hadn't had Token of Gratitude? Not a chance.

Luckily for the girl, my much kinder sister was here and I'd gain something from helping her, even if I didn't yet know what.

"Missy, we'll have to teleport again to get this girl up to the surface. Apparently someone's waiting there for her." I informed my twin holding out my left hand to her and my right to the other girl. "Take my hand. I don't know if I can take you with us, otherwise."

"Thank you." She replied as yellow fingers closed around my gloved hands.

With everyone ready, I closed my eyes and kindly asked the Force to tell me where to warp to. Once I felt it guiding me, I just followed my instincts and once again broke into the realm of far too many colours.

This time, however, I didn't stay for long. I essentially just 'dipped' into that realm for a moment before going right back into the world I'd left but at a slightly different angle that was, frankly, precise enough that I probably wouldn't have made it without the Force helping me.

It wasn't too shocking to me that the padawan's reaction to entering what I assumed to be some kind of gap between realities was to throw up. I'd have preferred for that to happen away from the full-grown green-skinned jedi in black robes, though.

"Barriss? What has happened to my padawan?" The jedi asked calmly. Too calmly for someone who had just witnessed their padawan appearing, injured, alongside two strangers before immediately throwing up. She was probably one of those 'suppress all emotions' types or whatever stupid bull it was the jedi taught.

There was an urge to needle her, to make tasteless jokes here and now just to amuse myself. I swallowed it down solely because I didn't want to have to write off this reality just yet and needlessly antagonizing the jedi just because I found them and especially their code to be boring might force the issue. "We saved her. My sister and I can teleport, as you saw, and ended up in the caves here through an accident. She asked us to get her back to the surface since she's been injured and so we did. Our teleportation just isn't really…nice to experience for people other than us, apparently."

Well, Missy hadn't been the greatest fan of it from what I could tell, either. I just liked it because of the sheer potential behind all the blurring colours. So much knowledge was out there and I could access it all! What's a bit of vertigo for a couple moments in comparison to that?

At least the explanation calmed the jedi down, though she still waited for Barriss to raise her head and nod before relaxing entirely. "Thank you, then. Though the trial was one Barriss was meant to take on her own, you couldn't have known and so I will not admonish you for it. Now, it's only proper for us to introduce ourselves. My name is Luminara Unduli."

"I'm Lilian and this is my sister, Missy. She doesn't know the language, though, so I'm afraid she can't really take part in the conversation right now." I introduced us. "And, in general, we have to get back home soon so, if you'll excuse us, we'll leave now."

"Very well." The jedi held a thoughtful frown as she spoke and, had I been better at using the Force, I'd have tried to look into her mind with it just to satisfy my curiosity. In general, people probably really wouldn't like me having access to telepathy. "Thank you again and I wish you safe travels home."

"You didn't tell me that the world you found was Star Wars!" Missy hissed at me after we got back.

If I had to guess, the lightsaber on Unduli, the clear aliens and the kyber crystals gave it away.

"It wasn't particularly important and I wasn't sure yet, anyways." None of that was technically untrue. I was about 90% sure it was Star Wars because the crystals and my new abilities fit together far too well but there hadn't really been any kind of confirmation until now.

The actual truth was that I was simply secretive by nature. I'd have told her if she'd asked but it wasn't really natural for me to just tell all my secrets even when it came to my sister. Most of them, yes, but only the ones that actually mattered. If I were to share all the information I hoarded, it'd just take forever and most of it was irrelevant to both of us with me only remembering it because I liked knowing things.

That reality most likely being Star Wars was unimportant in my eyes because I had yet to actually find a way to get more out of this world than just basic Force stuff and probably wouldn't until I figured out some way to reach other planets. Preferably one that wouldn't take me several days at minimum.

"Fine! But I consider stuff like that important so tell me next time." Missy told me and I made a mental note of it much I did with everything regarding people I cared about.

Getting a perfect memory would be something to look into in due time, though, to be honest, mine was good enough that it wasn't a high priority for the time being.

"I will, I promise." Making promises lightly wasn't something I did so that should at least stop her from worrying that I might start keeping secrets from her. I was, of course, kind of already doing that. Knowledge that was fully irrelevant to her – such as the memories from my previous life – wasn't something I cared to share.

I loved my sister but, ultimately, those memories didn't really change me and I had no idea how to even consider approaching that topic so I just wouldn't.

"Good. Now, knowing you, you already grabbed a bunch of the lightsaber crystals during your first visit, didn't you?" Missy leaned forward in clear excitement. "Come on, share some with me!"

"I will but, for now, I don't even know how to use them. If we have to, we can always go back to grab more so, until I know how to make a lightsaber, those are staying in my inventory." I mostly just didn't want to sort through my loot with her to see which crystal would bond with her or whatever the weird warm feeling mine had given me was. I'd happily go back with her to find one that suited her but that'd wait until I at least had something to ward off the cold.

Missy pouted at that. "Alright, alright. Just let me know as soon as you do because I want one of those, too." Of course she did. Lightsabers were cool enough to make me look past my dislike of sci-fi stuff.

"Want to stay here while I study what few spells people actually managed to figure out?" There was one really good one that just prevented women from having periods. It had infertility as a minor side-effect but there's a counterspell that removed the first one's effects.

There were also fireballs. Fireballs were nice even if I'd probably get similar spells that would be a lot better in the future.

"No thanks." Missy scrunched up her nose at me. "Really, you refuse to study for school because 'you're already good enough' but the moment you get magic you do nothing but study."

"One, my grades say that I don't need to study." I pointed out, smug and proud about it. "Two, it's magic! What could be more exciting to learn about?"

"Ugh, whatever." Missy replied with faux annoyance but the small smile on her lips would've given her away if Omniglot and the Force hadn't already clued me in.

After that, she didn't stick around for long and we said goodnight to each other before she left.

And, to my credit, I did study some spells until I felt that she'd fallen asleep. Then, I left for a new, hopefully magical, world.

Notes:

So this was meant to be about 1.5 times as long but I ended up cutting some scenes that weren't important enough for the time being

As for the jedi encounter, that's something that'll end up being important later and has the nice side benefit of preventing me from writing 'and then they looted the cave for more kyber crystals'

Anyways, I'm tired so I'll end this AN after one more thing. What do you think Lilian's geasa are? because she has 6 of them that she herself is unaware of and they do have a large influence on her. If you can guess what they are, I'll happily confirm it since she won't figure them out because of the entire 'unaware' part
