Chapter 2: Chapter 1 : The Strange Isle
Summary:
Chapter 1 begins in King's Landing, Westeros, with a Small Council meeting convened due to the appearance of a mysterious island. With no information available about the island, the Hand of the King, Otto Hightower, scolds the Lord Admiral, Corlys Velaryon, and the two come into conflict. King Viserys orders Corlys to prepare for reconnaissance but cautions him to be prudent.
During this time, Prince Daemon Targaryen bursts into the meeting and volunteers to explore the island on his dragon Caraxes. King Viserys initially opposes this, but Daemon eventually heads to the island on his own. Corlys, worried about his reckless actions, follows him but fails to stop him.
Daemon rides Caraxes through the fog and arrives at the island, where he is astonished by the bizarre scenery, completely different from Westeros. Although it should be daytime, it is dark, with two moons and unfamiliar constellations in the sky, and a massive white tower stands tall in the center of the island.
Finally, as Daemon marvels at the beauty of the tower, Chapter 1 concludes with the shocking scene of him being attacked by a red dragon much larger than his own.
Chapter Text
The afternoon sun streamed through the arched windows of the Red Keep's Small Council chamber, painting faint golden stripes across the heavy oak table. The most powerful figures in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros sat gathered like shadows beneath the beams of light.
This space, usually filled with sharp accusations and the king's weary mediation, was today heavy with silence. The Red Keep, heart of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the place where the realm's most potent and solemn power was wielded. The atmosphere in the Small Council chamber, at its very center, felt even heavier due to the mysterious event that had recently spread throughout the kingdom. The joy that should have been heightened by the news of Queen Aemma's pregnancy had long since faded in the face of the sudden reality.
The faces of the kingdom's key figures, lined along the long table, were shadowed by their individual worries and secret intentions. King Viserys I sat on the throne, his lips pressed tightly together as if uneasy, his pale fingers lightly tapping the tabletop. His gaze wandered into the empty air.
"About that island... is it true that nothing at all has been discovered about it?" The king's voice, devoid of its usual gentleness, was low and sharp with a tremor.
The Hand of the King, Otto Hightower, spoke, maintaining his characteristic cold expression. "Your Grace, the island appeared exactly a week ago, suddenly, as if a great beast had risen from the depths of the water. It lies between Crackclaw Point and the crown jewel of Dragonstone—a rocky isle, now the largest in all of Blackwater Bay, though no chart or sailor's tale ever mentioned it before..." He paused, wetting his lips as if hesitant, before casting a sharp gaze at Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Lord of the Tides and Master of Ships. "The Lord Admiral has yet to provide any satisfactory information."."
"The Sea Snake," Corlys Velaryon, met his sharp gaze unflinchingly, raising a single eyebrow slightly. Cold fury simmered in his eyes. "It is not that I have 'failed to provide' information, Your Grace, but rather, how can I provide information that 'does not exist'? The island is not recorded on any map we know, not even in the ancient records of Valyria. Furthermore, the waters around it are completely shrouded in a bizarre fog that writhes as if alive, preventing any ship from even approaching. That fog... it exudes an eerie and strange aura, as if it belongs to another world." His voice carried the vivid memory of a terrifying experience.
Otto coldly cut him off, sharply accusing him. "Then why have you not yet dispatched an official exploration fleet? House Velaryon boasts the finest fleet in the realm! How the Lord of the Tides can appear so incompetent and passive is beyond my understanding! This is enough to make one doubt even Driftmark's loyalty to the Crown!" His voice revealed blatant hostility.
Corlys did not back down in the slightest, meeting his gaze with equal tension. Blatant anger was etched on his wrinkled face. "To rashly send out an exploration fleet would be an extremely foolish and dangerous act. No one can predict what awaits us in that fog, what unimaginable threat might lurk there. We do not even know if that island is hostile or friendly! Hasty actions could endanger the entire kingdom!"
Just as their voices were about to rise further, Viserys, with an expression of deep weariness, raised his hand weakly to stop their heated argument. "Enough! This unproductive bickering is sufficient! This chamber is not a place to blame each other's incompetence. We must work together, pooling our wisdom to find a solution for the common goal of the safety of the Seven Kingdoms! I want clear answers!" His voice held both the authority and desperation of a king.
At the king's firm tone, Otto and Corlys tried to conceal their displeased expressions but did not continue their argument. However, their gazes still locked on each other like sharp blades. The heavy air in the Small Council chamber did not dissipate easily.
Viserys continued, lightly tapping the table with a slender, trembling hand. "That island could certainly be a potential threat to our kingdom. But at the same time, it could also be an incredible opportunity beyond our wildest imaginations. We desperately need more information about it. Corlys, immediately mobilize your excellent fleet and prepare for reconnaissance as soon as possible. But... I will absolutely not tolerate any reckless or rash actions." His voice held both caution and a strong warning.
Corlys met the king's gaze with a firm look and gave a short nod. "Your Grace, your commands will be obeyed." His voice was resolute and trustworthy.
Otto, still unable to hide his displeasure, cautiously spoke. "Your Grace, we must not overlook the fact that the island is not far from Dragonstone, which is no less than the heart of the kingdom. If possible, it would be most wise and safe to bring the island under the dominion of Dragonstone, firmly within the kingdom's influence. It could be a wonderful gift for the prince who will be born in the future, and indeed for the entire realm." His voice subtly revealed the ambition of House Hightower along with his blatant political intentions.
Viserys paused for a moment, lost in thought. His grey eyes stared into the empty air. Dragonstone was the symbol of House Targaryen and a crucial strategic point in the Seven Kingdoms. But making a hasty decision about the veiled island was like wielding a blade in the dark, a dangerous gamble.
Just then, the sturdy doors of the Small Council chamber burst open with a loud noise. Prince Daemon Targaryen, the king's brother, appeared with his characteristic arrogant smile, a mixture of confidence and mischief. He wore the gleaming black and gold armor of the Commander of the City Watch, and the Valyrian steel sword "Dark Sister" hung coldly at his hip.
"Brother, I'm not late, am I?" Daemon sent Viserys a playful look and gave a light bow. His appearance instantly disrupted the heavy atmosphere of the Small Council chamber.
Viserys frowned at his sudden appearance and let out a deep sigh. "Daemon, this is not the barracks of the City Watch that you can wander in and out of as you please." His voice held blatant annoyance.
Daemon shrugged and said nonchalantly, "But I couldn't possibly stay away after hearing such an intriguing tale about a mysterious island. Perhaps I can even unravel the secrets of that island myself. With my loyal red dragon Caraxes, I can scour the skies above it. What do you say to seeing what's hidden within the strange fog that surrounds the island, with the sharpest dragon eyes in Westeros?" His violet eyes were filled with irrepressible adventurousness.
Otto shot Daemon a cold glare, his expression openly displeased. "Prince, that is an extremely reckless and dangerous idea! There might be terrible threats lurking on that island, threats beyond our wildest imaginations!" His voice was laced with contempt and concern.
Daemon responded to Otto with his characteristic cynical smile. "Danger is one of my oldest and dearest friends, Otto. Unlike the tedious parchment scrolls you so adore, I prefer to take direct action. And if your slow-moving ships cannot penetrate that disgusting fog surrounding the island, we have a powerful dragon that flies freely through the sky, don't we? Caraxes and I are always ready to face any situation. But... what can you do, wise Hand of the King?" His voice dripped with blatant mockery and contempt.
Viserys, as if no longer able to bear it, clenched his fist tightly and spoke in a somewhat forceful tone. "Daemon! Now is not the time to indulge your capricious and dangerous impulses. We must be cautious, very cautious. We still have woefully little information about that island. And cease this unnecessary provocation of my Hand at once! This is not a mere request from a brother, but a solemn command from the King of the Seven Kingdoms!" His voice was resolute, but it also carried a hint of deep anguish and disappointment.
True to his infamous moniker of the "Rogue Prince," Daemon gave a sly smile and reluctantly nodded. "Very well, brother... I mean, Your Grace. But if you ever find yourselves in need of my... special assistance, please do not hesitate to call upon me." His violet eyes still gleamed with mischief and defiance.
The meeting continued, but Daemon's sudden appearance and his provocative words only deepened the heavy and uneasy atmosphere of the Small Council chamber. Viserys let out a deep sigh inwardly. What could that island possibly be? And what unpredictable repercussions would it bring to the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros in the future? A heavy shadow fell over his heart.
In the end, the Small Council adjourned without reaching a clear conclusion, leaving behind an awkward silence filled with a lingering sense of unease. Daemon, who had not been able to hide his consistently intrigued expression, headed with a light step towards the Dragonpit, magnificently situated atop Rhaenys's Hill, as soon as the meeting ended. And "the Sea Snake," Corlys Velaryon, who had been watching Daemon with an 불안한 (uneasy) gaze throughout the meeting, followed him like a shadow.
"Daemon! What you are about to do is a clear act of defiance against the King's command! Viserys absolutely did not permit your solo actions!" Corlys blocked Daemon's path, his voice agitated. Blatant anger and worry were mixed in his blue eyes.
Daemon shrugged without stopping his stride. "I know, Corlys. But as the King's brother and Commander of the City Watch, I can't simply stand by and watch this bizarre event unfold, can I? You and I, and our Houses Targaryen and Velaryon, are now among the few remaining noble Valyrians in Westeros. What if that island is the land of hostile beings? It would be a strategic stronghold capable of easily blockading the entire Blackwater Bay with just a few ships. You know the potential threat this island poses as well as I do, 'Sea Snake'." With his characteristic sly smile, Daemon strode into the massive entrance of the Dragonpit. As if in response to his call, the great red dragon Caraxes answered with a majestic beat of his wings. "And we can fly freely above their heads!" His voice was brimming with excitement and confidence.
Corlys shook his head at his stubborn and unpredictable nature. "I see right through you, Daemon. You simply want to draw your brother's attention with this reckless act and place yourself at the center of the kingdom once more. Please, judge the situation and act with a little more cool-headedness!" His voice held genuine worry mixed with a hint of reproach.
But Daemon lightly dismissed his sincere advice and mounted Caraxes's massive, scaled back with the skill of a seasoned rider. He gave a short, clear command in High Valyrian, and with a thunderous roar, the red dragon soared through the darkness of the Dragonpit and into the open sky in an instant.
"But Corlys, if we handle this cleanly with our own hands, we can once again clearly imprint the might of House Velaryon and the majesty of the Targaryens, who rule the skies of Westeros, upon that arrogant old Hightower!" Daemon's shout was lost to the air, swallowed by the increasingly distant cry of the red dragon.
Realizing he could no longer persuade him, Corlys let out a heavy sigh. He looked up at Daemon and Caraxes soaring into the sky with an uneasy gaze, lost in deep thought. A sense of foreboding hung over his heart like a shadow.
With heavy steps, Corlys returned to the Red Keep and went straight to King Viserys's chambers. The only person who could possibly control the reckless Daemon was his brother, the King of the Seven Kingdoms.
"Your Grace, in the end... Prince Daemon has flown to that mysterious island on his dragon Caraxes! No matter how earnestly I tried to dissuade him, I could not break his stubbornness..." Corlys reported to the king with a bitter and desperate expression.
As soon as Viserys heard his report, he let out a short sigh followed by a deep one. "He wouldn't listen, would he! Daemon has always been willful!" He simply stared blankly out the window of his study, where the late afternoon sun was pouring in, filled with deep dismay and helplessness. His eyes flickered without focus.
"Your Grace, now that things have come to this, we must quickly uncover the secrets of that island, both for Prince Daemon's safety and for the sake of all of Westeros," Corlys pleaded with the king in a fervent voice.
Viserys nodded weakly at his words. "Yes, Corlys... you are right. For all of us." His voice was weary, but a sense of determination could be felt within it.
Meanwhile, Daemon, mounted on the massive back of the red dragon Caraxes, was flying swiftly over the dark sea towards the mysterious island like a red comet. The thick fog clung to them persistently like a living, enormous creature, but Caraxes, with a fierce golden glint in his eyes, relentlessly tore through the veil of fog with powerful wingbeats
Finally, the faint outline of the island began to emerge from the thick fog. As his vision gradually cleared, Daemon held his breath at the wondrous sight unfolding before him. An exclamation escaped his lips involuntarily. "Bloody hell! Seven Hells... can such a place exist!"
The island revealed a bizarre landscape completely disconnected from the Westeros he knew so well, as if he had crossed over into another dimension. Despite the fact that it should have been daytime in Westeros, the island was deeply submerged in a thick and eerie darkness, and a strange and unfamiliar scene unfolded in the night sky, utterly different from that of Westeros. Two moons, never seen in the Westerosi sky, hung in the night, and countless stars shone brilliantly like a cascading Milky Way. And overwhelming all that strange spectacle, a massive white tower stood tall in the center of the island. At first glance, its magnificent and bizarre size was comparable to that of Casterly Rock.
"Beautiful..." Daemon breathed out a mystical exclamation without realizing it. As a prince, he had seen countless magnificent palaces and majestic castles, but the pure white tower before him possessed an overwhelming beauty incomparable to any previous structure. The pure white tower, faintly glowing in the darkness of the eternal night, was like a delicate work of art meticulously crafted by the hand of a god. Its bizarre beauty deeply captivated Daemon's heart.
At that moment, a chilling and cold aura felt from behind made Daemon quickly turn his head. Two eyes, gleaming blood-red in the deep darkness, and a massive dragon covered in hideous red scales, far larger than his own dragon Caraxes, was fiercely pursuing them from behind with unbelievable speed, like a shadow in the darkness. The enormous threat encountered in this strange world froze Daemon's heart cold.
