Chapter 1: Prologue : A new destiny
Chapter Text
The prophecy became a heavy reality, pressing down on the continent of Tamriel.
In the year 201 of the Fourth Era, Alduin the World-Eater, destroyer of black wings, was extinguished along with the spirits of Sovngarde. The vampire lords of Volkihar crumbled to dust beneath the light of dawn, and in the darkness of Apocrypha, Miraak fell with the final blow.
However, the world was never allowed peace.
Ten years later, the Second Great War between the Empire and the Aldmeri Dominion erupted. The flames of war, threatening to engulf the entire continent, were finally extinguished in 4E 211 on the island of Balfiera in High Rock. Beneath the shadow of the Adamantine Tower, the first of the Towers, the Aldmer armies suffered a devastating defeat, and the provinces once under their control returned one by one to the banner of the Empire.
But victory was bitter.
The last of the Mede Dynasty, Crown Prince Attrebus, fell in battle on the Elsweyr front, leaving the Ruby Throne without an heir. The battlefields were endlessly filled with the graves of nameless heroes. Fathers carried the coffins of their sons and daughters, and mothers wept for the loss of their children. The farmlands, which should have been golden, were covered in lifeless ash, and only the ravages of war were felt everywhere. Even in this situation painted with despair, the Empire did not yield. Because there was only one person left, the last Dragonborn.
A mortal human with the soul of a dragon, the final hero of prophecy, he was the last hope of the Empire. As Regent, he led the Empire, and he became a living legend, commanding victories on the front lines of the war. Thanks to his courage and wisdom, the Empire rose again. When the war ended, the nobles of Cyrodiil tried to enthrone him as Emperor, but the Dragonborn defied everyone's expectations and refused the throne.
Instead, he consolidated the regency by strengthening the authority of the Elder Council. And finally, after the chaos was settled, he vanished without a trace. Like the wind.
Dragonborn's Perspective
An empty study, only the cold moonlight seeping through the windows filled the silent stillness. The Dragonborn stood alone in the darkness.
"If I said there were no regrets, that would be a blatant lie."
His voice was low and hoarse. As a hero, he had accomplished countless feats, but he could not be completely free from human desires. The blood of the dragon constantly boiled within his veins, whispering the sweet temptation of conquest and dominion. Once, he had even imagined bringing the continent under his feet. But he truly loved the green earth and vast skies of Tamriel, and the ordinary people who lived there. For their peaceful lives, he had to suppress his deepest desires. He knew that the moment he sat on the throne, the forgotten longings would surely rise again.
"My Demi-Prince, the warm water is ready."
A quiet voice broke the thread of his deep thoughts. The Dragonborn paused for a moment, his gaze still fixed on the window, before slowly moving towards the steaming bath. Taking off the clothes he was wearing, he looked at his reflection in the mirror. His body, hardened by countless battles and arduous journeys, was as tough as armor, but it bore indelible marks like medals.
A gruesome pattern marked the spot where Hermaeus Mora's tentacles had touched him, and the scar left by Malacath's curse still remained clearly visible on his shoulder. A faint mark shone under Azura's silvery moonlight, and a scar that looked as if Molag Bal's sharp claws had raked him…
The marks of all the Daedric Princes were clearly etched onto his body like brands. It was a glory and at the same time an inescapable curse. He knew all too well that the moment he sat on the throne, they would whisper endlessly in his ear again, spreading the dark temptation of power. Their endless power struggles would bring chaos to Tamriel, incomparable to that of the already ash-ridden Aldmeri Dominion.
In the end, the Dragonborn had no choice but to retire to Moon Glave, the Oblivion realm granted by Azura. But it was not a simple retirement. Azura, in bestowing Moon Glave upon him, also granted him eternal life, freeing him from the shackles of mortality. But at the same time, he became one with the fate of Moon Glave. As long as Moon Glave existed, he was bound to exist as well.
In that place where night lasted forever, an endless darkness stretched, the result of Azura twisting and transforming a portion of Meridia's stolen realm. In the middle of that darkness stood a solitary white tower. Once used as a summer palace by the Ayleid king Umaril, it now maintained a strange balance amidst the subtle checks and balances between Azura and Meridia.
Slowly climbing the tower's spiral staircase, the Dragonborn pondered his choice once more. He had left Tamriel, but still, the sound of its wind, the warmth of its sunlight, and the laughter of its people lingered in his ears. But now he could no longer be a part of that land. He was a hero and at the same time too dangerous an existence, so he could no longer leave any trace there. The burning passion of his days freely roaming Tamriel had faded, and he merely existed as an eternally unkillable being.
His new pastime was the humble creation of models. He started by simply carving pieces of wood or stones, but at some point, he began to meticulously recreate the Imperial City, where he had once served as Regent, in miniature. Little by little, the miniature buildings grew in number, expanding beyond the Imperial City to carve out Cyrodiil, and before he knew it, they filled an entire room, embodying all of Tamriel. He carefully moved a small chisel and hammer, refining the roofs and walls of the dusty little buildings with his loyal Dunmer servant Holaron. The Dragonborn reminisced about the past, telling Holaron stories about the Imperial City he remembered and about Tamriel as he knew it.
"My Demi-Prince, an item that seems to have been left behind by a distinguished guest has arrived."
Holaron carefully handed him an old, faded silver box. The Dragonborn opened the box and took out a dull, ashen-grey gem that glowed faintly. It was a perfectly crafted black soul gem.
The moment he held the soul gem in his hand, Moon Glave began to shake violently. The white tower creaked, and the surrounding space trembled restlessly like a distorted mirror. Holding the ashen soul gem, the Dragonborn fell into deep thought. He could instinctively feel that the eternal game of the Daedric Princes was not yet over. For a fleeting moment, he felt a cold gaze piercing him from the distant abyss. At the same time, he sensed a strange change occurring throughout his realm.
In the pitch-black night sky, in the eternal darkness of Moon Glave, a strange moon that he had never seen before rose, emitting a faint light. And around that moon, constellations of bizarre shapes, never seen in the night sky of Tamriel, newly appeared.
He instinctively realized that this was no longer the Moon Glave he knew, nor even Tamriel.
From deep within his long-dormant heart, a small spark of passion that he thought had been extinguished began to faintly rekindle.
