My fingers curled around Ed's arm as the hostile atmosphere settled over us. His mum's smile was wide but it did not reach her eyes. His dad, on the other hand, was much more relaxed. Perhaps it was the drink that eased his nerves or the lively occasion happening.
"Congrats, both of you," he said, raising his glass as a toast. It sounded sincere so I mouthed out thanks.
Ed mirrored his dad's action and gave a curt reply, "Thanks for coming, mum, dad." I thought we would be having a small talk as a congratulatory session typically does. But Ed was quick on his feet, moving past his parents to greet our other guests.
"Although I must say, I still don't like your attitude the other day," his dad murmured into his glass.
We turned our head to find his mum now had a smug grin on her face. As though she had won a battle no one else knew they were fighting.
It appeared resentment ran in this family. I grimaced at the thought.
