As I feared, the guests began to crowd in. My ears drummed aloud to the beat of my heart, drowning their murmurs. There was no other answer I could think of, nor an excuse to get out of answering. Cold beads of sweat broke out and my body shivered.
Aunt Sera stroked my hand and stated, "We have known Maisie since she was young. She's like our daughter."
My jaw dropped. Judging by the room's reaction, so did many others. I was not expecting her to protect me this way.
"That's interesting..." Ed's mum too, was taken aback. This time she looked at me with less prejudice. "How did that come to be?"
"She went to the same school as the kids."
People nodded their heads, commenting how it made sense. It was ironic considering they were not part of the conversation.
