Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Fractured Authority

The village gates came into view just as the sun began to sink beneath the horizon.

A warm orange glow stretched across the path, painting long shadows behind the returning team. The forest air slowly gave way to the familiar scent of the village—but something felt different.

Heavier.

The merchant they had escorted nearly jumped off the cart before it fully stopped.

"We're finally back… thank you… thank you all…"

Relief flooded his voice as he hurried toward the guards, not even waiting for a response.

Ryuzen stepped forward, his posture straight, his expression unchanged.

"Mission complete."

Short. Direct. Efficient.

Exactly what was expected.

But behind him, the silence of the team told another story.

🌆 Uneasy Eyes

As they entered the village streets, the usual liveliness was there—vendors, voices, movement—but it quickly faded into murmurs as people began to notice them.

Not just notice.

Watch.

"…That's them…"

"…The eastern forest team…"

"…They actually returned…"

The whispers spread like ripples.

Allan frowned, glancing around.

"Why are they staring like that?"

Kaito's eyes moved calmly, analyzing the crowd.

"…Fear," he said quietly.

"Fear?" Allan repeated.

Kaelen said nothing.

His thoughts were elsewhere.

Back in the forest.

Back at the ruins.

That stone.

Those markings.

And that faint voice—

"When the storm awakens…"

His hand tightened slightly.

"…What was that?" he thought.

⚠️ A Man Steps Forward

Before they could reach the mission hall, a figure stepped into their path.

An older man.

His clothes were worn, his posture slightly bent—but his eyes were sharp. Too sharp.

"You went into the eastern forest."

It wasn't a question.

Ryuzen didn't hesitate.

"Yes. Escort mission."

The man stepped closer.

"And you came back."

A pause.

Ryuzen's tone remained steady.

"We completed the mission."

The murmurs behind them grew louder.

The man's expression darkened.

"…Then tell me."

His voice lowered.

"What did you see?"

Silence.

The question hung in the air.

Ryuzen didn't answer immediately.

"…Nothing unusual."

Kaelen's gaze shifted.

That wasn't true.

Not entirely.

The man's eyes narrowed.

"Nothing?"

His voice carried weight now.

"Then why are the beasts changing?"

That caught everyone's attention.

Kaito stepped forward slightly.

"…You've seen it too?"

The man nodded.

"For weeks."

Allan's eyes widened.

"Weeks?! Then why didn't anyone report it?"

The man let out a bitter laugh.

"We did."

That answer hit harder than expected.

Ryuzen's expression hardened.

"…Irrelevant."

Kaelen looked at him.

"…It's not."

⚔️ Tension Ignites

Ryuzen turned sharply.

"It is. Our task was escort. Nothing more."

"And if it becomes more?" Kaelen replied calmly.

The air shifted instantly.

The villagers stepped back slightly.

Allan tensed.

"…Hey, maybe not here—"

"Stay out of this," Ryuzen said coldly.

Kaito remained silent, watching.

Observing.

Ryuzen stepped closer to Kaelen.

"You're questioning orders again."

Kaelen didn't move.

"I'm questioning your judgment."

The words landed clean.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

Ryuzen's eyes narrowed.

"I am the captain."

"And I follow logic."

A pause.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

"…You hesitated back there," Ryuzen said.

Kaelen's expression didn't change.

"That didn't affect the mission."

"It affected you."

Silence.

For a brief second—

Kaelen didn't respond.

And that was enough.

Ryuzen smirked faintly.

"…Exactly."

🧠 A Controlled Break

Before the tension could escalate further—

Kaito stepped in.

"…Both of you are right."

The moment cracked slightly.

Ryuzen glanced at him.

"Explain."

Kaito's voice remained calm.

"The mission was completed. That is fact."

He turned toward Kaelen.

"But something is wrong in that forest. That is also fact."

Allan nodded quickly.

"Yeah… those beasts weren't normal."

Kaito continued.

"If we ignore it, it becomes a future threat."

Ryuzen crossed his arms.

"…So?"

"We report it," Kaito said simply.

Silence followed.

Kaelen nodded slightly.

"That's enough."

Ryuzen didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"…Fine."

But his tone carried a warning.

This discussion wasn't finished.

Not even close.

🏛️ Inside the Mission Hall

The atmosphere inside the mission hall felt unusually heavy.

Even the air seemed still.

Ryuzen stepped forward and placed the mission scroll on the counter.

"Escort mission complete."

The officer nodded, beginning to write.

"Any complications?"

A brief pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Kaelen stepped forward.

Ryuzen's gaze shifted toward him.

The officer looked up.

"…Explain."

Kaelen spoke calmly.

"Unusual beast behavior in the eastern forest."

The officer frowned slightly.

Kaito added details—patterns, movements, coordination.

Allan described the attack intensity.

The officer's expression changed as he listened.

"…We've received similar reports," he said slowly.

That confirmed it.

Something was happening.

Something bigger.

"You will remain available," the officer continued. "A follow-up mission may be assigned."

The team nodded.

Ryuzen remained silent.

But his eyes flicked toward Kaelen briefly.

🌙 After the Report

Night had fallen by the time they left the hall.

The village was quieter now.

But the tension within the team remained.

Unresolved.

Allan exhaled.

"…That was exhausting."

Kaito gave a slight nod.

"…It's only the beginning."

They walked in silence for a few moments.

Then—

Ryuzen stopped.

The others halted.

Without turning, he spoke.

"Next time… follow orders."

Kaelen met his back calmly.

"Give better ones."

The air froze again.

No one moved.

For a moment, it felt like something might snap.

But instead—

Ryuzen continued walking.

No reply.

But that silence said everything.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

As we don't know that,

🌑 Deep in the Forest

Far from the village—

The eastern forest stood in darkness.

Silent.

Still.

But not empty.

Deep within—

The ruins remained.

Broken stone structures covered in moss.

Ancient.

Forgotten.

The half-buried slab trembled faintly.

The cracks along its surface spread just a little further.

The symbols carved into it shifted.

Barely visible.

Barely real.

And then—

A faint glow.

Not bright.

Not stable.

But alive.

From deep beneath the stone—

Something stirred.

A presence.

Old.

Sealed.

Waiting.

A whisper echoed through the darkness.

Faint.

Broken.

"When the storm awakens… the seal shall break…"

The glow faded.

The forest fell silent once more.

But the stillness now—

Felt like anticipation.

Kaelen got just instincts of that it is just like a coin in a ocean .
