Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Shadows That Linger

The night stretched longer than it should have.

Even after the clash had ended, the forest refused to return to normal. The air felt thick—like something unseen still lingered between the trees, watching, waiting.

The caravan stood in a tight formation, guarded from all sides. No fire burned too bright. No one dared to relax.

Sleep came to none of them.

Allan sat with his back against a tree, his weapon resting across his lap. His eyes shut for brief moments, but every rustle of leaves snapped them open again. His grip tightened each time.

He exhaled slowly.

"…This isn't over," he muttered.

A few steps away, Kaito sat still, his posture straight, his gaze fixed ahead.

But his mind was far from still.

Every movement from the previous battles replayed in his head—their attack angles, their timing, the way they withdrew.

"They adjusted too quickly…" he whispered.

His fingers tapped lightly against his knee as he thought.

"Not random… not reckless… controlled."

Ryuzen stood at the outer edge of their formation.

Silent.

Unmoving.

Watching the darkness like it might strike again at any moment.

He hadn't rested.

Not even once.

And then—

There was Kaelen.

He sat slightly apart from the others, his back against a tree, head tilted downward.

At first glance, he looked calm.

But he wasn't.

His hand rested over his wrist.

The place where the masked man had touched him.

At first, there had been nothing.

Now—

A faint warmth spread beneath his skin.

Not painful.

But not right either.

It pulsed once.

Then again.

Kaelen's fingers tightened instinctively.

"…What is this…?" he whispered.

The sensation faded just as quickly as it came.

But the feeling stayed.

Like something had changed.

Dawn arrived slowly.

The darkness thinned, replaced by pale gray light filtering through the trees. Birds began to chirp again, hesitant at first.

The forest looked normal.

Too normal.

"Everyone. Gather."

Ryuzen's voice cut through the silence.

The team responded instantly.

Ryuzen's gaze moved across each of them.

"Report what you observed."

Kaito spoke first.

"They weren't disorganized," he said calmly. "Their movements were coordinated. Adjusted in real time."

He paused, then added,

"They didn't try to win… they tried to measure us."

The words settled heavily.

Allan frowned. "Measure us? Why would they—"

"Because they're not simple thieves," Kaito replied. "Their objective wasn't just the supplies."

Ryuzen nodded once.

"They held back," he said. "Next time, they won't."

Silence followed.

Allan exhaled. "…So this mission isn't as simple as we thought."

"No," Ryuzen said. "Which means from now on, every step matters."

His eyes shifted.

Landing briefly on Kaelen.

"For all of us."

Kaelen nodded.

"…Understood."

But his voice was quieter than usual.

And Ryuzen noticed.

As the others discussed, Kaelen felt it again.

A pulse.

Stronger this time.

His heartbeat synced with it.

One beat.

Two.

Three—

Then it stopped.

His jaw tightened.

He slowly clenched his fist to hide it.

No one spoke.

But Kaito's eyes flickered toward him for just a moment.

Observing.

Thinking.

🚶‍♂️ The Journey Resumes

By mid-morning, the caravan began moving again.

The path ahead was clear.

The sunlight broke through the canopy, casting shifting shadows across the ground.

Everything looked peaceful.

But no one trusted it.

Allan walked beside Kaelen.

"You okay?" he asked quietly.

Kaelen gave a small nod. "Yeah."

"You've been quiet."

"Just thinking."

Allan smirked faintly. "That's usually Kaito's job."

Kaelen almost smiled.

Almost.

Hours passed.

No attack came.

No sound of enemies.

No sign of movement.

And somehow—

That silence felt heavier than the battle.

"Wait."

Kaito's voice stopped everyone.

He crouched near the ground, brushing aside leaves carefully.

Ryuzen stepped forward. "What is it?"

"Tracks," Kaito said. "Not fresh… but not old either."

He moved a bit more foliage aside.

Then paused.

"…There's something here."

Hidden beneath the forest floor was a wooden hatch.

Carefully concealed.

Almost invisible.

Ryuzen's expression hardened. "Open it."

The hatch creaked as it lifted.

Inside—

Crates.

Stacks of supplies.

Food.

Equipment.

All neatly arranged.

Allan's eyes widened. "These are stolen goods…"

Kaito nodded. "This confirms it. This isn't random theft."

He picked up one crate slightly, turning it.

There—

Carved faintly into the wood—

Was a symbol.

Sharp.

Curved.

Precise.

Kaelen's breath caught.

For a moment—

The world felt still.

Something about the symbol…

Felt familiar.

Not visually.

But… internally.

He looked away quickly.

"…Just a mark," he said quietly.

Kaito didn't respond immediately.

He studied the symbol carefully.

"…No," he said after a moment. "It's not 'just' a mark."

"They're storing supplies in hidden locations," Kaito continued. "That means they've been operating here for a while."

Ryuzen crossed his arms.

"Meaning this area is part of their route."

"Or their territory," Kaito added.

Allan looked uneasy. "So they could still be nearby…"

A branch shifted in the distance.

Everyone turned instantly.

A shadow moved between the trees.

Fast.

Gone.

Ryuzen stepped forward slightly—

Then stopped.

"…No pursuit," he said.

"They want us to notice."

Silence followed.

🏁 Mission Completion

The rest of the journey passed without interruption.

No more attacks.

No more signs.

But the tension never left.

By late afternoon—

The trees began to thin.

The forest opened up.

And finally—

They saw it.

The destination.

The merchant nearly stumbled forward in relief.

"We're… we're safe…"

His voice shook slightly.

He turned to the team, eyes filled with gratitude.

"Thank you… truly… we wouldn't have made it without you."

Ryuzen nodded once. "Your goods are intact. Be more cautious in the future."

The merchant bowed deeply.

"I will. I promise."

Payment was handed over.

Clean.

Official.

The mission was complete.

But something about it didn't feel finished.

The team didn't stay long.

By evening, they began their return.

The forest felt different now.

Quieter.

But not empty.

Allan stretched slightly as they walked. "At least it's over."

"…For now," Kaito replied.

Kaelen said nothing.

That night—

Back within safe territory—

Kaelen stood alone.

The others had settled.

The world around him was calm again.

Slowly—

He pulled back his sleeve.

And looked at his wrist.

For a moment—

Nothing.

Then—

A faint glow.

Barely visible.

Lines began to form.

A pattern.

Incomplete.

Unclear.

But real.

A sharp pulse ran through his arm.

He winced slightly—

Then it vanished.

Kaelen stared at it.

His expression hardened.

"…So it's not over."

His fingers curled slowly.

Far away—

Hidden in darkness—

The same symbol flickered once more.

And in the silence—

A quiet truth settled.

Whatever had begun in that forest…

Was still following him.
