Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The Next Assignment

Morning light filtered through the high windows of the mission hall, casting long golden beams across the wooden floor.

The place was already crowded.

Ninjas moved back and forth, collecting scrolls, discussing assignments, and preparing equipment. The energy was different from before—less excitement, more focus.

More seriousness.

The easy days were over.

Kaelen stood in front of the mission board, his eyes scanning the newly posted scrolls. The missions were fewer now, but each one carried more weight.

Beside him, Allan leaned slightly forward, reading over his shoulder.

"…Yeah, these don't look friendly anymore," Allan muttered.

Kaito stood quietly to the side, observing everything—the missions, the people, the patterns.

"The shift was expected," Kaito said calmly. "Advancement means increased risk."

Kaelen nodded slightly.

Before he could reply—

A firm voice came from behind.

"Team."

They turned instantly.

Ryuzen stood there, arms crossed, posture straight as ever.

There was no wasted movement.

No unnecessary words.

"We've been assigned a mission."

Allan straightened.

"That was fast."

Ryuzen stepped forward and held out a scroll.

"D-rank."

The word alone changed the air.

Even Kaelen felt it.

Kaito spoke first.

"…So we're moving beyond basic tasks."

Ryuzen nodded.

"This won't be simple labor anymore."

Kaelen took the scroll and opened it.

His eyes moved carefully across the contents.

Mission Details

Type: Escort / Investigation

Rank: D

Location: Outer Trade Route – Eastern Sector

Objective:

Escort merchant caravan safely

Investigate repeated disappearance of supplies during transit

Ensure route stability

Kaelen read it twice.

Then closed the scroll.

"This isn't just escorting."

Kaito nodded.

"Supply disappearance suggests planning."

Allan frowned.

"So… thieves?"

Ryuzen shook his head slightly.

"If it were simple thieves, it would have been resolved already."

That one line—

Said everything.

Kaelen looked up.

"…So we expect resistance."

Ryuzen met his gaze.

"Yes."

A brief pause.

Then—

"Prepare. We leave within the hour."

🚶‍♂️ At the Village Gates

The team arrived fully equipped.

The merchant caravan was already waiting—two wooden carts loaded with supplies, pulled by sturdy animals.

A middle-aged merchant paced nervously nearby.

"You're the assigned team?" he asked quickly.

Ryuzen stepped forward.

"Yes."

The merchant visibly relaxed, though not completely.

"Good… good. We've had problems recently. Supplies going missing, strange noises at night…"

Kaito tilted his head slightly.

"Details?"

The merchant hesitated.

"It's always the same. We travel normally… nothing happens during the day. But by morning… something's gone."

Allan blinked.

"…Without anyone noticing?"

The merchant nodded nervously.

"Yes."

Kaelen and Kaito exchanged a glance.

That wasn't normal.

Ryuzen didn't show reaction.

"We'll handle it."

The caravan began moving.

The Trade Route

The path was wider than the forest trails they had taken before.

Clear.

Well-used.

But something about it felt… off.

Too quiet.

No birds.

No distant movement.

Just the slow creaking of the carts and the crunch of footsteps.

Kaito was the first to speak.

"…The environment is inconsistent."

Allan looked around.

"You mean quiet?"

Kaito nodded.

"Too quiet."

Kaelen's eyes scanned the surroundings.

The trees stood tall, their shadows stretching across the path like silent watchers.

Ryuzen walked at the front.

Alert.

Focused.

"Maintain formation," he said.

Hours passed.

The sun climbed higher.

Still—

Nothing happened.

But that didn't make it better.

It made it worse.

First Discovery

"Stop."

Kaelen's voice broke the silence.

The caravan halted.

Ryuzen turned immediately.

"What is it?"

Kaelen stepped off the path and crouched near the ground.

His fingers brushed lightly over the dirt.

"…Marks."

The others gathered.

Faint drag lines.

Not natural.

Kaito crouched beside him.

"…Rectangular pattern."

Allan frowned.

"Boxes?"

Kaelen nodded.

"Recently moved."

The merchant's face went pale.

"That… that's exactly what's been happening…"

Ryuzen stood still for a moment.

Analyzing.

"…They're not attacking randomly," he said.

"They're targeting specific goods."

Kaito added:

"And they're doing it without being seen."

A chill passed through the group.

Kaelen stood up slowly.

"…Which means they're watching first."

Ryuzen's eyes sharpened.

"Stay alert. From now on, assume we're being observed."

Camp Setup

As evening approached, they stopped near a clearing.

The caravan couldn't move safely at night.

A small camp was set up.

One cart in the center.

Team positioned around it.

The merchant stayed close, clearly uneasy.

Allan sat beside Kaelen.

"I don't like this mission."

Kaelen gave a faint smile.

"You didn't like the last one either."

"Yeah, but at least I knew what we were dealing with," Allan replied.

Kaito sat nearby, quietly sharpening a tool.

"Uncertainty is more dangerous than visible threats."

Ryuzen stood, looking toward the forest.

"I'll take first watch."

"No," Kaelen said.

Everyone looked at him.

"I'll take it."

Ryuzen stared at him for a moment.

Then nodded.

"…Fine. Stay alert."

The First Watch

The night grew deep.

The forest became darker.

Colder.

Kaelen stood near the edge of the clearing, his senses focused.

Listening.

Watching.

At first—

Nothing.

Then—

A faint sound.

Crunch.

Kaelen's eyes narrowed.

"…There."

He didn't move.

Didn't react immediately.

Another sound.

Closer.

"Ryuzen," he said quietly.

The next moment—

Ryuzen appeared beside him.

"I hear it."

Kaelen nodded.

"Multiple."

Kaito and Allan joined quickly.

"…Left side," Kaito whispered.

Shadows moved between the trees.

Fast.

Controlled.

"Positions," Ryuzen ordered.

The team spread out.

Silent.

Ready.

The merchant froze near the cart.

The shadows stopped.

For a moment—

Everything went still.

Then—

⚔️ Ambush

They came fast.

Out of the darkness.

Masked figures.

Not beasts.

Not animals.

Humans.

"Defend the cargo!" Ryuzen commanded.

The battle began instantly.

Kaelen intercepted the first attacker, blocking a strike and pushing them back.

The impact echoed through the clearing.

Allan moved quickly, placing himself between the cart and incoming attackers.

"No one touches the supplies!"

Kaito stayed behind, watching patterns.

Predicting movement.

"They're coordinated," he called out.

"Three on the left, two circling behind!"

Ryuzen didn't hesitate.

He charged forward—

Directly into the center.

Fast.

Precise.

Dominant.

The attackers were skilled.

Not amateurs.

Kaelen realized quickly—

"This isn't just theft…"

One masked figure slipped past the front line—

Heading straight for the cart.

Allan reacted instantly.

Blocking the path.

"You're not getting through!"

The attacker struck.

Fast.

Allan barely held his ground.

His stance shook.

"Kaelen!"

"I'm here!"

Kaelen moved in, intercepting the next strike and forcing the attacker back.

"Focus!" Ryuzen shouted.

The team adjusted.

Faster.

Better.

Kaito disrupted enemy movement.

Allan held defense.

Kaelen controlled the center.

And Ryuzen—

Broke their formation.

The attackers began to hesitate.

Then—

Retreated.

Vanishing into the forest.

Aftermath

Silence returned.

Heavy.

Allan exhaled sharply.

"…That wasn't normal."

Kaito nodded.

"They were testing our response."

Kaelen looked into the forest.

"…And they held back."

Ryuzen didn't deny it.

"…This mission just changed."

The air felt colder now.

The danger—

Was real.

Final Scene

The camp remained.

The supplies were safe.

For now.

But no one relaxed.

Kaelen stood at the edge of the clearing again.

Looking into the darkness.

Somewhere out there—

They were still watching.

Waiting.

And this time—

The team knew it.

"Next time… they won't run."
