The Wayne Foundation dinner was held in a ballroom on the fourteenth floor of the Meridian Hotel.
Berlin wore a deep green dress that she had not worn since before everything.
"You look beautiful," Kate said from the doorway of the dressing room.
She was already dressed. Black. Simple.
"You look like you have an agenda," Berlin said.
Kate laughed. "I always have an agenda. Tonight my agenda is to eat something at a function before I have to stop for dietary reasons."
Berlin turned from the mirror. "What dietary reasons?"
Kate waved a hand. "Nothing interesting. Doctor's orders. No alcohol, lighter food. Probably iron levels. You know how it is." She smoothed her sleeve. "Are you ready?"
"Almost," Berlin said. She looked at her reflection once more.
She thought about Karlos.
He was already at the dinner. He had gone ahead two hours early for the Foundation board briefing. He had kissed her cheek when he left and said: "I will find you when you arrive."
