The moment they stepped inside, the tension didn't disappear.
It shifted.
The doors shut behind them with a heavy metallic thud, sealing out the dark, but the weight in the air only changed shape. It wasn't the fear of monsters anymore.
It was people.
Jin felt it immediately, all the eyes watching and judging the newcomers.
They hadn't even taken more than a few steps past the entrance when one of the officers spoke.
"...Sir."
The voice was steady, but it cut through the room cleanly.
Jin's gaze shifted.
A broad-shouldered man stood a few meters away; arms folded across his chest. A jagged scar ran along his jawline, disappearing beneath his collar. His posture wasn't aggressive, but it wasn't welcoming either.
"We're taking them in?"
Another officer nearby exhaled quietly, rubbing the back of his neck.
"We don't know where they came from."
A third one spoke, eyes flicking briefly toward Jin and the others.
"Or what they've done."
The room didn't stop moving.
People still sorted supplies. Someone dragged a crate across the floor. Quiet conversations continued in the background.
But something had shifted.
Jin felt all of it without anyone turning fully toward them.
The scarred officer continued, voice even.
"We just got this place stabilized."
He didn't look at Ryu when he said it.
"We barely have enough to go around as it is."
A pause.
"It will put more of our people at risk."
No one argued with him, that was the part that stood out.
Not a single officer dismissed what he said because it made sense.
Jin didn't react outwardly, but he understood it immediately.
If he were in their position, he might've said the same thing.
Ryu didn't answer right away.
He stepped forward slowly, boots scraping lightly against the floor, gaze moving across his men one by one.
Not to size them up but instead to read them.
"I get it."
His voice was calm; it had no authority forced into it.
"We're stretched thin."
A few shoulders shifted as they listened to what he had to say.
Ryu continued.
"But think about why we're still here."
Silence followed.
"We didn't make it this far because we shut people out."
His gaze moved again, steady.
"We made it because we worked together, as we have been doing for years."
The scarred officer's jaw tightened slightly.
"That was before all this," he said.
Ryu nodded once.
"This," he gestured vaguely, not at the building, but at everything beyond it "is exactly when it matters."
No one spoke.
Ryu's voice didn't rise or harden on his men, if anything, it softened slightly.
"We made an oath."
That word lingered.
Oath.
It meant something here.
"To protect."
A younger officer looked down.
Another exhaled quietly.
The scarred officer didn't move.
Didn't speak.
But the tension in his shoulders eased, just slightly.
Ryu didn't push further.
Didn't repeat himself.
Didn't demand obedience.
He just waited.
And slowly, one by one, they moved and opened a path for them to pass through.
The scarred officer was the last.
He held Ryu's gaze for a second longer.
Then stepped aside.
That was it.
"Let's move," Ryu said.
Jin didn't hesitate.
They walked in.
The inside of the station hit differently than expected.
Fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting everything in a clean, sterile glow that clashed violently with the world outside.
Jin blinked once, adjusting.
The smell was different too.
There was no blood or decay.
Desks had been pushed aside, stacked against walls or turned into makeshift partitions. Blankets were spread across the floor in organized sections.
A group sat along one wall quietly eating from opened ration packs.
Across the room, someone counted supplies, stacking them with careful precision.
Further down there were weapons laid out across the floor.
Jin's fingers twitched slightly.
Joon let out a low breath beside him.
"…They got organized fast."
Echo gave a quiet whistle.
"Yeah… no kidding."
There was something in his tone.
It wasn't sarcasm.
Something closer to… relief.
"If cops can pull something like this together in a few hours…" Echo muttered, stretching his arms slightly, "maybe everything's not completely screwed."
"Over here."
Ryu's voice pulled them forward again.
They stopped near a large board mounted against the wall.
Ryu stepped slightly to the side.
"Take a look."
Jin read.
No stealing.
No internal violence.
Everyone contributes.
No unnecessary risks.
Simple.
Straightforward.
Necessary.
His eyes lingered on one line longer than the others.
Anyone caught trying to kill another survivor will be dealt with accordingly.
"…No prison," Jin muttered under his breath.
Ryu heard it.
"We don't have one."
There was no hesitation.
Jin understood perfectly what he meant.
Joon exhaled slowly.
Echo nodded once.
"Harsh."
"…But fair."
Ryu didn't respond to that.
Instead he tapped lightly against the board.
"This one matters the most."
No unnecessary risks.
"We don't throw lives away."
Seul-ki spoke this time.
Her voice was quiet.
But sharp.
"So, if someone's out there?"
Ryu met her gaze immediately.
"If saving them risks everyone here, then no."
Seul-ki's jaw tightened.
She didn't look away.
But she didn't argue either.
Jin stayed silent.
Because he understood both sides.
Ryu let the silence sit.
Then-
"You've seen how we run things."
His gaze moved across all four of them.
"You heard the rules."
A brief pause.
"Are you still staying?"
Jin didn't hesitate.
"We'll stay."
"For now."
Echo let out a breath.
"Yeah… I'm not going back out there."
Joon nodded once.
"…Same."
Seul-ki crossed her arms.
Didn't say anything.
But she didn't disagree.
Ryu nodded.
"Good."
Then he turned.
Started walking away.
Jin frowned slightly.
"You're leaving?"
Ryu glanced back.
"Going back up."
"Still on lookout."
Of course he was.
Jin didn't say anything else.
Ryu disappeared up the stairwell without another word.
The moment he was gone.
Everything hit at once.
Joon dropped back against the nearest desk with a groan.
"I swear… sitting has never felt this good."
Echo laughed quietly, rolling his shoulders.
"Yeah, no kidding."
Jin didn't move right away.
Then slowly he lowered himself down.
Back against cold metal.
His body was finally catching up with his exhaustion.
He exhaled slowly.
"…We help out while we're here," Jin said after a moment.
Not looking at them.
"Not sitting around."
Joon waved a hand tiredly.
"Yeah, yeah… after five minutes of being dead."
Echo smirked slightly.
"Five?"
Joon closed his eyes.
"Ten."
Jin almost smiled.
Almost.
Then Seul-ki stiffened.
Jin noticed immediately.
"What?"
She didn't answer.
Her gaze had locked onto something across the room.
Her breathing shifted.
"…No way."
Jin turned.
Followed her line of sight.
At first nothing stood out.
Just more survivors.
Then Seul-ki's voice came out barely above a whisper.
"…Brother?"
