00:00:05
The tension in the hall felt alive.
Jin sat forward slightly, elbows resting against his knees, fingers locked tightly around the riot baton laying across his lap. Around him, nobody spoke anymore. Even the restless shifting from earlier had faded. Survivors sat frozen in place, eyes fixed on the glowing timers hanging in their vision like execution clocks counting down toward something none of them understood.
00:00:04
The fluorescent lights above buzzed faintly.
Someone near the front whispered a prayer under their breath.
Another person quietly started crying.
00:00:03
Jin exhaled slowly through his nose.
It wasn't just fear anymore.
Fear had passed hours ago.
This was pure anticipation mixed in with dread. The feeling of standing on the edge of a cliff and knowing the ground beneath your feet was about to disappear.
The system had controlled every second of the last day.
Whatever happened next would decide whether this nightmare was survivable at all.
00:00:02
Ryu stood near the center of the hall, arms crossed tightly over his chest, gaze steady despite the pressure hanging over everyone. Even the officers looked tense now. Alert. Ready.
But ready for what?
Nobody knew.
00:00:00
Suddenly every screen in the room flickered violently.
The lights dimmed and a sharp ringing noise echoed inside room loud enough that Jin and several other people flinched.
And then the system spoke.
"…Well now."
"That went better than expected."
The voice drifted through the hall softly, almost conversational, yet every word carried impossible weight behind it. It sounded amused and interested.
Like humanity had survived a test it wasn't supposed to pass.
"A surprising number of you are still alive."
"Alot of you all adapted quickly."
"Some embraced violence faster than I had anticipated."
"Some of you hid."
A pause followed.
Then a quieter thought.
"Some of you broke almost immediately..."
"A shame..."
The system continued casually, like it was discussing weather instead of human lives.
"But survival is survival."
"And those who survive deserve a reward."
The air itself seemed to tighten.
"You may still believe this is temporary."
"It isn't."
"There is no returning to the world you knew."
"The version of humanity that existed yesterday is already gone."
Jin felt his grip tighten unconsciously.
Across the hall, survivors stared blankly ahead while the system continued speaking directly into their minds.
"From this point forward, growth determines value."
"Strength determines freedom."
"And hesitation…"
A soft chuckle echoed through the room.
"…Well. You've already seen what hesitation does."
Several people lowered their eyes.
The system didn't stop.
"You endured the First Trial."
"You adapted to conflict."
"You awakened your abilities."
"So now…"
"More functions have been made available."
Blue screens exploded open across the hall.
🔻 [System Features Expanded.]
🔻 [Stats Unlocked.]
🔻 [Skills Unlocked.]
🔻 [Shop Access Granted.]
🔻 [Rankings Updated.]
🔻 [Future Trials Registered.]
People immediately started reacting around him.
Jin kept staring ahead.
The system's voice softened slightly.
"A Trial may be survived through luck."
"But life beyond the Trial cannot."
"So learn."
"Grow."
"Compete."
"Kill if necessary."
"Adapt no matter what."
"Because the world ahead will not slow down for you."
The pause this time felt deliberate.
Like the system was smiling somewhere far above them.
"…For now, though."
"Rest while you still can."
The voice faded slightly.
"It only gets harder from here."
Then silence.
No alarms or explosions or monsters crashing through the barricades.
Just silence.
Jin slowly exhaled.
Somewhere nearby, a man started laughing weakly into his hands. Another survivor sat against the wall with tears running silently down her face while staring at nothing.
Nobody looked relieved.
Because this wasn't the end.
The system had made that painfully clear.
This was only the beginning.
Jin pushed himself slowly to his feet.
His body still ached from training and the fights before it, but staying seated suddenly felt impossible.
"I need a minute," he muttered.
Echo looked up from nearby, exhaustion heavy on his face.
"Where exactly are you gonna go?"
Jin let out a quiet breath.
"Nowhere, just need to walk for a bit."
Joon stretched his sore shoulders with a grimace.
"Yeah. I get it."
Nobody stopped him.
Everyone was trying to process things their own way.
Jin stepped away from the crowded hall and into one of the quieter side corridors near the station offices. The noise behind him dulled immediately, leaving only the hum of emergency lights and the sound of his own breathing.
Then his screen flickered again.
🔻 [System Update Applied.]
🔻 [User Information Registered.]
🔻 [Expanded Access Available.]
A second notification appeared immediately after.
🔻 [Would You Like Assistance Understanding the System?]
Jin frowned slightly.
Is this a tutorial?
Part of him wanted to ignore it.
The system already felt invasive enough.
But another part of him understood something important already.
The system rewarded people who adapted quickly.
And right now, information was survival.
Jin exhaled slowly.
"…Yeah."
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the hallway lights flickered once then a small glowing figure suddenly appeared in front of him.
Jin immediately stiffened.
The thing hovering there looked vaguely humanoid, but not completely. Its shape constantly shifted at the edges like static struggling to hold itself together. Pieces of its body flickered in and out of existence every few seconds.
Its face barely existed at all.
Just glowing lines and unfinished features.
When it spoke, its voice sounded smoother than the main system. Less overwhelming and more direct.
"Hello, User Jin Yeong."
"I have been assigned as your temporary Tutorial Assistant."
Jin crossed his arms slowly.
"You're different from the voice earlier."
"That entity manages the greater system."
"I am only support functionality."
The answer came instantly, but unlike the system itself, this thing almost sounded… conversational.
Jin studied it carefully.
"…You got a name?"
The figure paused for a short time then its body flickered for half a second.
"I do not require one."
"Right."
That answer somehow made it weirder.
The assistant straightened slightly in the air.
"Beginning basic overview."
A screen appeared between them instantly.

Jin's eyes narrowed immediately.
"…Infinity?"
The assistant froze.
And no that wasn't meant metaphorically.
It actually froze in place.
Its entire body locked midair.
Then the lights overhead flickered violently.
The assistant's form distorted sharply, static ripping across its body as broken fragments of text flashed around it.
🔻 [ERROR]
🔻 [INVALID]
🔻 [RECHECKING]
🔻 [SYSTEM CONFLICT DETECTED]
Jin stepped back instinctively.
"The hell?"
The assistant twitched unnaturally.
For a second, multiple voices overlapped from its body all at once.
"Impossible."
"Undefined."
"Reprocessing."
"Reprocessing."
"Reprocessing"
Then suddenly everything stabilized.
The assistant straightened again like nothing happened.
"…Apologies."
Jin stared at it.
"…What was that?"
The assistant remained silent for two full seconds.
"A temporary calculation issue."
"That looked a lot worse than a calculation issue."
"No further explanation is currently available."
Of course.
Jin rubbed his forehead slowly.
Something about that reaction unsettled him more than the infinity stat itself.
The assistant continued speaking before he could press harder.
"Attributes represent your current physical and mental capabilities."
"They may improve through combat, training, adaptation, or system influence."
Jin's eyes lingered on the infinity stat one more time before moving on.
"…Fine. What else?"
"Skills are now fully available for review."
The screen shifted.
🔻 [SKILL WINDOW]

Subskills:

Adaptive Combat – Gradually analyzes enemy behavior during battle.
Bloodlust (Dormant) – Locked.
Jin frowned slightly.
"…Bloodlust sounds concerning."
"Correct."
Jin blinked.
"…That's it?"
"Yes."
"…You're useless."
"Correct."
Jin stared at the floating assistant for a moment before snorting quietly despite himself.
The thing didn't even react to insults.
"The shop has also been unlocked."
Another screen appeared.
This one looked different immediately.
Rows of items stretched downward endlessly, though many remained blurred or hidden entirely.
🔻 [PERSONAL SHOP]
The assistant spoke calmly.
"Each shop is uniquely generated for the individual user."
"Your inventory reflects your compatibility, combat style, growth potential, and subconscious weapon affinity."
"…Subconscious weapon affinity?"
"Correct."
The first items loaded fully.
🔻 [Available Equipment]

Jin blinked slowly.
"…A shovel?"
The assistant nodded.
"You possess high compatibility."
"With a shovel?"
"With improvised weapons."
Echo would never let him live this down.
Jin scrolled further.
The items became stranger the lower he looked.
Meat hooks.
A modified nail gun.
A sharpened wrench.
Even a full fire axe listed further below under locked equipment.
None of them looked flashy or legendary in any sense but every single one looked brutal and practical.
Weapons someone desperate would actually use.
Jin slowly exhaled.
"…So the system really thinks I'm the kind of guy who kills people with construction equipment."
"Current compatibility suggests high effectiveness."
"…Jesus Christ."
The assistant tilted its head slightly.
"That reaction is common among first-time users."
Jin rubbed his face tiredly.
"What about points? How do I get them?"
"Points are earned through survival, combat contribution, Trial completion, monster elimination, and human elimination."
The last part landed heavier.
Human elimination.
It didn't say murder or killing, just human elimination.
The system deliberately avoided emotional language.
Like people were resources being removed from a board.
Jin hated that.
Before he could ask another question, a final notification appeared.
🔻 [National Rankings Unlocked.]
🔻 [Would You Like To View Current Rankings?]
Jin stared at the screen silently.
Something about that alone made his stomach tighten.
Because if rankings existed, then somewhere out there…
People were already climbing them.
