My hands wouldn't stop trembling. I tried to hide it by gripping my phone until my knuckles went white. It didn't help. Connor had chosen the couch. Not across from me. Not next to me. On the couch, with space between us that felt like a canyon. His hands rested on his thighs. His face was blank. No anger. No questions. Just staring at me like he was trying to decide if I was still the man he thought I was.
And my soul, that was worse.
My stomach rolled. If I didn't get a grip I was going to puke in his guest bathroom and ruin any chance I had of fixing this tonight. Any romance, any apology, any 'us' would be gone. I took a breath then another, cleared my throat and dialed Vasilisa.
It rang.

A baby screaming in the background. Vasilisa yelled in Russian. Something shattered.
"EJ?" she finally answered, breathless. "Did you see the news?"
