A quiet breeze slipped through the trees, stirring the leaves like whispers from the afterlife. The clearing had gone still, save for the faint shimmer of residual chakra that lingered in the air where Karura's soul had vanished moments ago. The warm glow of the Reanimation Jutsu had long since faded, and the forest had returned to its silent vigil under the heavy night sky.
Gaara sat on the grass, motionless. His eyes were fixed on the space where his mother had disappeared, as if willing her to return with nothing but the ache in his heart and the salt that trickled down his cheek. His fingers curled into the soft earth, grounding him.
Naruto stood a few steps away, giving Gaara the space he needed. He let out a soft breath and allowed the silence to stretch for several minutes, his arms folded across his chest, eyes watching Gaara with quiet understanding.
Then, gently, he spoke.
"Gaara."
There was no response at first. But Naruto noticed the subtle way Gaara's shoulder shifted—he had heard him.
"I figured I'd give you a bit of time," Naruto said, taking a step forward. "But we still have something else to deal with tonight."
Gaara slowly turned his head, his expression weary yet focused. His voice was hoarse, scraped raw from the emotion he had just lived through. "What... do you mean?"
Naruto offered a small, knowing smile. "I'm talking about Shukaku."
The one word, Shukaku, seemed to instantly change the air.
A heaviness settled in Gaara's chest, as if the sands within him stirred restlessly at the mention of the name. The mood that had just begun to lift plummeted again, like a gust of cold wind had snuffed out a warm fire.
Gaara blinked slowly, as if trying to push past the lingering emotions of the reunion. "What about him?"
"You have two choices," Naruto began calmly, stepping up beside him. "I can either strip Shukaku out of you completely... or reseal him inside you using a better, safer seal."
Naruto let that sink in for a moment, watching Gaara's reaction closely.
Gaara's brows furrowed. He looked at Naruto sideways, his gaze searching. "Why wouldn't I choose the first one?" he asked, his voice still low but steadier now. "Wouldn't it be easier to just get rid of him?"
Naruto sighed, his expression turning serious. "Yeah... it might seem easier. But things aren't that simple, Gaara. You know how the ninja villages work. Tail Beasts... they're more than just burdens. They're also symbols of power. Weapons of deterrence."
Gaara's jaw clenched slightly. He knew Naruto was right. The politics of the five great nations were tangled and dangerous. "So... removing Shukaku from me would weaken the Sand Village," he muttered bitterly.
Naruto nodded. "Exactly. It might tilt the balance of power. Cause tension between villages. Maybe even start a war. I know it's not fair, but... that's the world we live in."
A tense silence followed. Gaara lowered his gaze to the ground. The thought of having to live with that presence inside him even a moment longer filled him with dread—but he also understood the consequences.
"I'm sorry," Naruto said softly. "But you've carried him for this long. I just need you to bear with it a little longer."
Gaara let out a slow breath, the anger and frustration slowly giving way to reluctant acceptance. "...Fine. But if we're doing this... it has to be different."
Naruto's lips quirked up slightly. "That's the plan."
He placed a hand gently on Gaara's shoulder, grounding him. "I'm going to reseal Shukaku using an Uzumaki seal. It'll keep him in check. You'll finally be able to sleep without his voice echoing in your skull every night."
Gaara's eyes widened slightly. "...Is that really possible?"
Naruto chuckled and pointed to himself. "Look at me. I've got the Nine-Tails sealed inside me. But I sleep like a baby. Believe me, it's not because he's a teddy bear. The Uzumaki Clan was known for their sealing techniques for a reason. My mom taught me everything she knew."
The mention of Kushina brought a quiet reverence to Naruto's tone, and Gaara noticed it. There was a warmth in Naruto's eyes when he talked about her, a different kind of strength. A strength not born from battle, but from love.
"I won't lie," Naruto continued, "the process is a little tricky, and we can't do it here. Too many eyes, too many risks. We'll need to leave the village for a while. Somewhere quiet."
Gaara gave him a long look, his teal eyes finally losing their tension. "Then where?"
Naruto just grinned. "Leave that to me."
Without waiting for further questions, Naruto reached into his jacket and pulled out a specially marked kunai. Gaara barely had time to react before Naruto grabbed his shoulder firmly with one hand and threw the kunai up into the air.
In a flash of golden light, they vanished from the clearing, teleported away in the blink of an eye using the Flying Thunder God Technique.
...
The world twisted and the familiar rustle of forest leaves, the distant hum of nocturnal insects, and the peaceful weight of Konoha's night air... all vanished in the blink of an eye.
In their place came a heavy silence..
Gaara felt his feet stabilize against the cracked, uneven surface beneath him, and his eyes immediately began to take in the surrounding terrain which was clearly ruins.
There were shattered stone pillars half-consumed by vines, scattered remnants of what had once been buildings now laid half-sunken into the ground, overtaken by thick patches of grass and moss.
He turned slowly, his sharp eyes catching every crack, every broken frame, every overgrown wall.
Naruto, standing calmly beside him with arms crossed, took in the sight with an indifferent expression.
Gaara broke the silence. "...What is this place?"
Naruto smirked faintly, the corners of his lips lifting with a hint of pride and nostalgia.
"This," He said, raising his hand to motion around the forgotten land, "is the Land of Whirlpools. The homeland of the Uzumaki Clan."
Gaara's brow furrowed. His sand shifted quietly behind him as he took another step forward, his eyes scanning the broken, ancient layout of the once mighty village. "But… it's all gone."
Naruto shrugged. "Yeah. That's what happens when the four great nations get scared and team up against one clan."
Gaara's eyes narrowed slightly. "Why?"
Naruto's smirk deepened into a grin. "Because we were that strong."
The wind pushed through the hollow ruins like a quiet whisper, rustling the tall grass as if it were trying to confirm Naruto's words with its own voice.
Gaara looked back at him, curious. "Strong enough for all the other villages to unite?"
Naruto chuckled, placing his hands behind his head, stretching. "Yup. The Uzumaki Clan wasn't just famous for our massive chakra reserves or our ridiculous lifespans. They were mostly famous for their Fūinjutsu, the sealing arts. And that made us dangerous."
Gaara lowered his gaze again, staring into the broken path ahead as he processed Naruto's words.
Naruto waved a hand, dismissing the heavy history with ease. "But enough about ancient grudges. We didn't come here for a history lesson."
Gaara turned his gaze back to Naruto as the blond stepped forward, kicking a small piece of rubble aside.
"We're here to deal with your little tailed beast problem."
That caught Gaara's full attention.
Despite his calm demeanor, a small knot had returned to Gaara's chest.
Shukaku, the One-Tailed Beast!
The monster that had plagued his sleep, twisted his childhood, and haunted his very soul for as long as he could remember.
"...Here?" He asked quietly.
Naruto nodded. "Here's perfect. This place is completely isolated with no prying eyes."
He stepped over the ruins like he had walked these paths a thousand times before, his gait relaxed but purposeful.
Gaara followed, silent, but his mind raced.
