Chapter 409 - Ch 215 - The Last Embrace

The moon still hung high above the canopy, casting its gentle silver glow across the clearing deep within the forest. The crickets hummed a quiet melody through the night as the rustle of leaves swayed with the occasional breeze.

Naruto returned quietly, his footsteps soft as he stepped between the underbrush. His eyes landed on the scene before him, and his lips curled up ever so slightly.

Gaara sat beside his mother, Karura. His once stoic face now softened, glowing with a serene, childlike warmth that forgot about Naruto, not even his siblings would have ever seen before.

The shadows under his eyes didn't seem so heavy anymore. He was smiling as he leaned in close to Karura, listening to her speak softly.

It was a picture of peace that Naruto didn't want to interrupt, but he knew time was ticking.

He cleared his throat softly twice.

"Ahem. Ahem."

The sound wasn't loud, but it was enough.

Karura turned her head first, rising to her feet with a grace that somehow lingered despite the jutsu that had reanimated her. Her sandy brown hair fluttered slightly in the wind, her gentle eyes meeting Naruto's.

There was no confusion in them anymore, only clarity, understanding, and deep maternal warmth.

Gaara looked up as well, his emerald eyes tinged with the remnants of drying tears, though a faint smile still remained at the corners of his lips.

Karura took a step forward, then another, until she stood just before Naruto. She bent forward slightly, lowering her head in a bow of gratitude.

"Thank you," She said gently. "Thank you... for giving me this chance. I learned from my son that it was you who made this possible."

Naruto gave a sheepish smile, scratching the back of his head. "Heh... It's no big deal, Aunt."

Karura lifted her head, her gaze filled with soft fondness. "It is a big deal... for a mother who never got the chance to say goodbye properly."

She stepped closer, reaching out and placing a hand atop Naruto's head. Her palm was cool, yet comforting. "You called me 'Aunt'… then I shall treat you as a nephew. I won't forget what you did tonight."

Naruto's smile widened, slightly embarrassed but deeply honored. "Then I'll take that seriously, Aunt Karura. Just thought... it'd be nice to help a fellow Jinchuriki who was hurting."

Karura's expression wavered for a moment as she turned her head to glance at Gaara.

"Hurting…" She whispered. "Yes. He was hurting so deeply... and I never got to hold him before. Never told him he wasn't a monster."

Then she looked back at Naruto, that smile returning. "You've done more than you know, Naruto Uzumaki. Not just for Gaara, but for me too."

She reached out and patted his cheek softly. "Look after him, won't you? Even after I'm gone."

Naruto let out a sigh, raising both hands with a faint grin. "You're asking a lot. I can't babysit him every day, you know."

Karura chuckled, her voice like wind chimes beneath the night sky. "Just do your best. That's all I ask."

Naruto gave a slight nod. "Fair enough."

She turned and stepped away, back toward Gaara, who had risen to his feet but looked as if the earth had become too heavy beneath him. His fingers trembled at his sides, and his jaw clenched hard enough that his teeth creaked.

Naruto's smile faded as he looked at him.

"It's time," He said gently.

Gaara's lips parted, then pressed shut again. His eyes flicked toward his mother, trying to memorize every detail.

His throat burned as he whispered.

"Mom…"

Karura nodded, her expression calm though her soul trembled. "I know, my son. I know."

She stepped forward and opened her arms.

Gaara didn't hesitate. He moved into her embrace and buried his face into her shoulder. His arms wrapped tightly around her waist, like a boy holding onto the last dream he didn't want to wake up from.

"I don't want to let go," He whispered.

Karura gently ran her fingers through his hair. "You don't have to let go, Gaara. I'll always be with you... in here."

Her hand rested over his heart. "I've always been here, even when you didn't know it. Even when they made you believe otherwise."

His voice cracked. "You love me?"

She pulled back just enough to look into his eyes.

"I love you more than anything," She whispered fiercely. "You were never a curse. You were my treasure. My son. I don't know what lies Yashamaru or your father fed you… but they were wrong."

Gaara blinked rapidly, tears slipping free once more. "But Father… he said… I was a failure… a mistake…"

Karura clenched her fists tightly for a moment, her voice hardening. "Your father… was the Kazekage, yes. But he was also a man. And sometimes men are fools. They believe power justifies cruelty. He thought control meant salvation. But that was his sin, not yours."

She softened again, her hand gently cupping his face. "You were born with a burden no child should carry. And yet here you are, Gaara... You… became a man."

He exhaled shakily. "I'm still afraid sometimes… that people see the demon, not me…"

Karura leaned forward and kissed his forehead. "Let them see what they want. You'll show them who you really are… with your actions. With your heart."

He stared at her, his vision blurry.

She stepped back, smiling at him gently, though her spiritual body already began to flicker faintly, pieces of dust-like chakra starting to rise off her skin.

Gaara felt it, and his heart twisted. He turned to Naruto, who had already begun weaving seals.

The young Uzumaki sighed, looking away for a moment. "You ready?"

Gaara's lips trembled, but he nodded. "Yeah."

Naruto whispered under his breath and clapped his hands together.

The kanji of the Reanimation Jutsu glowed across the ground for a moment before a burst of spiritual light pulsed through Karura's body.

She didn't cry. She only smiled, her voice as soft as the wind that danced through the trees.

"Live well, Gaara."

He took a step forward instinctively, but her body was already beginning to disintegrate—her form turning translucent, particles of chakra rising into the air like glowing embers.

Karura's soul floated upward, her hair billowing as if underwater, her spirit looking down at her son one last time.

"I'll be waiting for you," She said with a smile that made the moonlight itself pause in reverence. "But not too soon… so live a long, beautiful life."

And with that, she vanished into the stars.

The clearing fell into silence once again.

Gaara stood rooted to the spot, unmoving, as the last motes of light faded from the sky. He was breathing, but every breath shuddered. His fists clenched and unclenched at his sides, his heart pounding loud enough to drown out the night's music.

Then the first tear rolled down his cheek... and then the second.

He fell to his knees, not in despair, but in release.

And for the first time in his life, he cried for love, and not for loneliness.

Naruto gave him some space, walking to the side.

The wind tugged at his clothes as Kurama stirred in his mind.

"You're awfully soft today," The Nine-Tails rumbled.

Naruto grinned faintly. "Just thought I'd help that sand imp out. He needed it."

Kurama snorted. "Sentimental nonsense. That tanuki-brained brat's not worth it. You know how annoying Shukaku is? You're lucky you don't have to hear his voice every damn day."

Naruto chuckled. "Yeah, well… maybe he'll mellow out one day, too."

"Doubtful. But whatever floats your human heart."
