Chapter 57 - FRACTURED OATH

The village slumbered under the cover of darkness, the only sound being the distant hooting of owls and the occasional barking of dogs.

Jax stood at the forefront, his eyes blazing with a mixture of fury and calculation. He barked out orders to his men, pointing to specific buildings.

"Take down the market stalls first," he yelled, his voice carrying across the village. "And make sure to torch the blacksmith's shop."

His men sprang into action, their movements swift and ruthless. They smashed through doors, shattered windows, and set fires that quickly spread, engulfing the thatched roofs.

The villagers, caught off guard, scrambled to flee or defend their homes. Panic set in as the sounds of shattering wood and screams filled the air.

Jax watched the chaos unfold, a cold smile spreading across his face. He seemed to revel in the destruction, his eyes gleaming with a sadistic intensity.

As the village descended into chaos, one of his men approached him, looking uneasy. "Jax, maybe we should focus on the mission objective. We don't want to—"

Jax cut him off, his voice low and menacing. "We're doing this my way. Make an example out of this village. Show them what happens when they cross us."

The man nodded hastily, retreating to join the others in their rampage. The village was consumed by flames and fear, with Jax's men leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

The villagers, fueled by desperation and anger, began to gather, forming a crowd that marched towards Jax and his men. Meili's parents, along with Isabella's, were among them, their faces etched with worry and determination.

The crowd's approach seemed to momentarily pause Jax's men, their torches wavering as they glanced at each other uncertainly. Jax, however, stood firm, his eyes flashing with challenge as he faced the gathering villagers.

The air was thick with tension, Jax's voice boomed through the night air, his words dripping with arrogance and menace. "Get on your knees, all of you!" he bellowed, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "Surrender your valuables, your livestock, your food – everything. You're lucky I'm offering you mercy."

The villagers exchanged fearful glances, their faces illuminated by the flickering torches. Meili's parents and Isabella's parents stood tall, their eyes flashing with defiance, but also tinged with fear for their daughters' safety.

The crowd hesitated, unsure of what to do. Some began to kneel, but others stood firm, their jaws set in determination. Jax's men moved forward, their swords drawn, ready to enforce their leader's demands.

The village elder's eyes locked onto Jax, his face creased with age and concern. "We will give you what you want," he said, his voice steady. "Take our valuables, our livestock, our food – take everything. Just spare our lives. We beg of you, have mercy on my people."

Jax's expression remained cold, his eyes calculating. He seemed to weigh the elder's words, his gaze sweeping over the villagers. After a moment, he spoke, his voice dripping with condescension...

"Mercy," Jax spat, his voice laced with venom. "You think you're worthy of my mercy? I didn't plan on killing any of you at first, but now... now I just want to watch you all burn." His eyes blazed with a malevolent intensity as he took a step forward. "You want to beg for your lives? Prove your worth. Bring me everything of value this village has. Then, maybe we'll talk about sparing your pitiful lives."

The villagers exchanged fearful glances, their faces lit up by the torches that seemed to dance in sync with their racing hearts. As the villagers began to offer their goods to Jax and his men, Meili's mother stepped forward, her eyes fixed intently on Jax. Her husband grasped her arm, trying to hold her back, his face etched with worry. "Don't," he whispered urgently. "It's dangerous."

Meili's mother shook off his grip, her determination evident. Isabella's parents, standing nearby, exchanged a concerned glance. They nodded in silent agreement with Meili's father, their faces reflecting their own fears for their daughter's safety and the potential danger of Meili's mother's actions.

Despite their concerns, Meili's mother stood firm, her gaze never wavering from Jax. She took a step forward, her gaze locked on Jax. "We will give you what you want," she said, her voice steady. "But please, tell me, where is my daughter?"

Her husband's worried eyes met hers, his face etched with concern for their daughter, Meili, and the uncertainty that lay ahead. Jax's men paused, awaiting their leader's response, as the village held its collective breath.

Jax ignored her, his attention focused on the villagers' offerings. Meili's mother's voice grew louder, more fierce. "Where is my daughter?"

Jax turned to her, a hint of amusement on his face. "Huh, what's your deal, old lady?"

Meili's mother's eyes blazed with determination. "Where is my daughter?" she demanded a third time.

Jax sneered, his expression twisting into a cruel smile. "You mean to tell me you're the mother of that runt, huh? Well, well, isn't that convenient. Your daughter was sure a pain in the ass, I tell ya. I made sure to put her to good rest. Got any problems with that..."

WHAM!!

Before Jax could finish his sentence, Meili's mother's hand shot out, landing a resounding slap across his face. The sound echoed through the village, leaving the onlookers stunned and Jax's men momentarily frozen in shock.

The intensity of the hit sent Jax's face spinning, his head snapping back with a loud crack. He stumbled, looking stunned, his nose already bleeding rapidly. "I've had enough of this disrespec—," Jax growled, but was cut short once more.

Meili's Mom didn't stop there. With a fierce "kiai", she launched herself at Jax, unleashing a flurry of swift kicks and punches that landed...

THWACK SMACK

Her movements were a blur as she showed unbelievable taijutsu skills, going head-on against Jax.

Jax tried to defend himself, but Meili's Mom was relentless, her blows landing with precision and force. The sounds of the fight echoed through the crowd, leaving Jax's men momentarily frozen in shock.

"Oh my, am I really doing this? It's been decades, but my body can still move like this..." Meili's Mom thought, a mix of surprise and exhilaration coursing through her veins.

Jax stumbled back, gasping for breath, his eyes narrowing as he regained his composure. "Attack them all!" he bellowed, his voice carrying across the village square. "Show no mercy!"

"Oh no," Meili's Mom whispered, her eyes scanning the scene as Jax's men charged forward with a fierce battle cry. The crowd gasped in unison, their faces etched with fear and uncertainty.

Meili's Dad stood tall, his eyes locked on his wife, and then he turned to the villagers. "We'll fight together!" he shouted, his voice ringing out across the square. "We won't go down without a fight! Stand with us, and we'll defend our home!"

The villagers, inspired by his words, steeled themselves for battle, their faces set with determination. The air was electric with tension as the two groups clashed, the sound of shouting and scuffling filling the air...

The air was thick with tension as the two groups faced off, ready to clash. But just as the fight was about to erupt, an unusual feeling swept over the village, like an ominous shadow looming on the horizon.

Everyone paused, sensing the intense worrying energy building up. The atmosphere grew thick with fear, and for a moment, it seemed to stop, as if holding its breath.

And then, a blood-curdling cry pierced the air: "Ahhh!!!" The villagers' eyes snapped towards the source of the scream, and their jaws dropped in shock.

There, in the midst of Jax's men, stood Meili, her eyes blazing with fury, her body radiating an aura of raw power. She was in rampage mode, and Jax's men cowered in terror, unsure of what to do.

Meili's Mom's eyes widened in shock, her voice barely above a whisper. "Meili...?"

Meili's gaze flicked to her mother for a brief moment, but there was no recognition, no spark of familiarity. Her eyes were empty, her face a mask of fury. With a swift and deadly motion, she turned back to her opponent and finished them off, blood spraying everywhere, covering her face.

Jax's eyes widened in shock, his voice ringing out across the village square. "What the hell, she's still alive?!" he bellowed, his face twisted in rage. "Attack her! Take her down with everything you've got!"

His men hesitated, intimidated by Meili's rampage mode, but Jax's orders sent them charging forward, swords drawn, ready to take on the enraged young woman. The villagers watched in horror as Meili prepared to face the onslaught, her eyes flashing with a fierce, animalistic intensity.

With a swift arc of her sword, Meili unleashed a devastating energy wave that sliced through the air, cutting down nearly half of Jax's men. The blast sent bodies flying, their screams cut short as they crashed to the ground.

The villagers watched in awe, their eyes wide with wonder, as Meili stood tall, her sword still humming with energy. The air was thick with the smell of blood and sweat, and the sound of clashing steel had given way to the eerie silence of shock.

Jax's remaining men faltered, their confidence shaken by Meili's display of power. They exchanged nervous glances, their eyes darting between Meili and their leader, awaiting further orders.

Jax made a desperate move to save himself, his voice laced with a mix of fear and calculation. "Hey, hold it, queen of surprises," he sneered, his eyes locked on Meili. "Can't lie, you have me and my men cornered with this crazy new power of yours. But I won't give up without a fight."

With a swift motion, he grabbed Meili's Mom, pulling her close and pressing a dagger to her neck. "Move an inch, and it'll be the last thing you see," he snarled, his voice dripping with malice. "This pretty woman's face won't be so pretty anymore."

But Meili's expression remained unfazed, her gaze steady and unyielding as she regarded Jax and her mother.

To Jax's surprise, Meili's expression remained unreadable, her gaze fixed on him with an unnerving intensity. Without flinching, she raised her sword, pointing it directly at Jax.

Jax's nervousness seeped into his voice as he taunted her. "You don't scare me, brat. You make a move, and I slice her neck open straight down to her heart. I don't care what happens to me – it's either your life or your mom's... Hey, this feels like one of those intense hero moments, am I right?" He sneered, his eyes glinting with desperation. "The ultimate test of love and sacrifice... or stupidity. Which one will it be?"

The air was thick with tension as Meili's sword hovered, poised to strike, while Jax's dagger pressed deeper into Meili's Mom's neck, the threat hanging precariously in the balance.

Jax's eyes flicked away from Meili for a split second, and when he refocused, he caught a glimpse of a smirk etching onto her face. Before he could even process what he saw, Meili vanished from his sight.

"What the...?" Jax started to say, but his words trailed off as he realized his mistake. "Where did she...?" he muttered, panic creeping into his voice.

WHOOSH

It was too late. Meili reappeared behind him, her sword flashing in the early morning sunlight. With a swift, deadly motion, she sliced Jax's head clean off his body. His lifeless corpse crumpled to the ground, his head rolling away with a sickening thud.

Meili's Mom stumbled backward, her eyes wide with shock and confusion. "H-how did she do that? Did she teleport?" she thought, her mind reeling with questions. "Is this my Meili? What's going on?"

Jax's men, however, had no time for questions. Catching sight of their leader's lifeless corpse, they turned tail and fled into the forest, desperate to escape Meili's wrath.

But Meili was relentless. With a fierce determination, she gave chase, her feet pounding the earth as she pursued each of Jax's men with rapid speed. Her sword flashed in the sunlight, and the sounds of screams and clashing steel echoed through the forest, a grim testament to her unyielding fury.

With the influence of Wraithbane, Meili's physical abilities had undergone another dramatic transformation. The dark energy coursing through her veins had amplified her strength, speed, and agility to supernatural levels.

Her muscles now rippled with an otherworldly power, allowing her to move with a fluidity and deadliness that belied her human form. The Wraithbane's influence had unleashed a fierce and primal energy within her, making her a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

This newfound power explained her incredible feats, from taking down dozens of Jax's men with ease to teleporting short distances and moving with lightning-fast speed. Meili's body had become a vessel for the Wraithbane's dark energy, and she wielded it with ruthless precision.

With Meili's insane speed and short-distance teleportation, she hunted down several of Jax's men, her sword slicing through them with deadly precision. None were spared, none were left to flee.

Deep within Meili's mind, Wraithbane stirred, its dark energy reveling in the carnage. "Hahaha, such destruction. I've waited so long to taste something like this again," it whispered, its malevolent presence feeding off Meili's rage.

But Meili's Mom refused to let the destruction continue unchecked. "MEILI!!!" she called out, her voice piercing through the forest, echoing off the trees. "Meili, stop! Please, come back to me!"

Her words hung in the air, a desperate plea to reach the daughter she once knew, now lost to the darkness within.

Meili's rampage slowed, her sword hovering mid-air as she seemed to hesitate. The sound of her mother's voice pierced through the haze of Wraithbane's influence, momentarily breaking the spell.

For a fleeting instant, Meili's eyes flickered, and a glimmer of recognition sparked within them. She turned, her gaze locking onto her mother's distant figure, standing amidst the trees.

The forest fell silent, the only sound the heavy breathing of the few remaining survivors, and Meili's mom's labored breaths as she called out to her daughter. "Meili, it's Mom... please, come back to me."

The conflict within Meili became palpable, her eyes flashing with an inner turmoil. Wraithbane's presence surged, threatening to consume her completely, but her mother's words had planted a seed of doubt.

The air seemed to vibrate with tension as Meili's mom took a step forward, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Meili, I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. Come back to me, baby."

The words seemed to resonate deep within Meili, and her sword began to lower, ever so slightly. But Wraithbane's influence wouldn't let go without a fight, and the darkness within her roared back to life...

"Come on, the fun was just getting started," Wraithbane taunted, but suddenly, an intense energy within Meili surged forward, overwhelming the dark entity.

"Shut it, you bastard. Leave me alone," Meili's inner voice retorted, her words a stark contrast to Wraithbane's mocking tone.

"My my, what do we have here," Wraithbane was taken aback, impressed despite itself that Meili could withstand its influence. For a moment, the dark entity's grip on Meili wavered, giving her a glimmer of control.

Meili's eyes fluttered open, and she found herself enveloped in darkness. It wasn't until she tried to move that she realized her mother's arms were wrapped tightly around her, holding her close to her chest.

For a moment, Meili didn't struggle, didn't try to break free. Instead, she let herself be held, the warmth and familiarity of her mother's embrace a balm to her frazzled nerves.

As she stood there, the darkness began to recede, replaced by the sound of her mother's ragged breathing and the gentle rocking motion of her body. Meili's tension began to ease, and she felt a sense of peace wash over her, one she hadn't known in what felt like an eternity.

Meili's mom held her close, her face buried in her daughter's shoulder. She was shaking, tears streaming down her face as she whispered over and over, "My baby, my baby's okay..."

The crowd of villagers, including Meili's dad, stood frozen in shock, their eyes fixed on the carnage before them. They had followed Meili's mom into the forest, hoping to lend aid to her and Meili, but instead, they were met with the aftermath of Meili's rampage.

Jax's lifeless body lay on the ground, his men scattered around him. Meili killed each and every one of them. The villagers' faces were pale, their mouths agape as they took in the sheer destruction.

Meili's dad pushed his way to the front, his eyes scanning the scene until they landed on Meili and her mom, wrapped in a tight hug. For a moment, he just stared, relief washing over his face.

Then, he took a step forward, his voice barely above a whisper. "Meili? Baby girl?" He sounded hesitant, unsure of what to expect...

"Dad..." she whispered, her voice trembling. She took a step forward, and her dad enveloped her in a tight hug.

"I'm so glad you're okay, baby girl," he whispered, holding her close. "I was so scared."

Meili buried her face in her dad's chest, feeling a mix of emotions...

Meili quickly pulled away from her dad's warmth and took off deeper into the forest, her eyes scanning the surroundings with a sense of urgency.

"What's the problem, Meili? Where are you headed?" her dad yelled after her, confusion and concern etched in his voice.

"I'll be right back, Dad!! It's Isabella, I have to hurry!" Meili called out, not looking back as she disappeared into the trees.

Meili's mom glanced at her dad, worry etched on her face. "Oh dear, I hope she's okay," she whispered, her eyes following Meili's retreating figure.

Meili's dad's expression turned determined. "I'll go after her. You stay here and...and make sure everyone is okay," he said, already moving to follow Meili into the forest...

Meili's dad sprinted after her, his feet pounding the earth as he yelled, "Meili, slow down! Wait for me!"

But Meili didn't respond, her figure disappearing around bends and behind trees. Her dad continued to chase after her, his breathing growing more labored with each step.

He gasped for air, his legs burning as he struggled to keep up. "Meili...please...wait..." he panted, his voice hoarse from exertion...

As Meili's dad walked, trying to catch his breath, he couldn't help but think back to the events that had just transpired. His daughter, Meili, had taken down Jax and his men with an ease that was almost unnatural.

He shook his head, trying to make sense of it all. "How did she...? She's always been talented, but this...this was on a whole different level," he thought to himself.

The images of Meili's swift movements and deadly precision replayed in his mind, leaving him with more questions than answers. "The iron fist academy sure has some interesting training regimen"

"Is this really what's best for her?" he thought, a question echoing in his mind as he continued to walk, his eyes scanning the forest for any sign of Meili.

He bumped into Meili, his lack of athleticism and poor stamina sending him tumbling to the ground.

"What the... Meili?" he exclaimed, expecting her to react. But she stood frozen, her eyes wide with a look of horror.

"Uh, Meili, what's the problem?" he asked, concern creeping into his voice.

That's when he followed her gaze and saw Isabella's parents, clutching their daughter and sobbing uncontrollably...

Meili's dad stumbled backward, his eyes fixed on the scene before him. Isabella's parents were holding their daughter, tears streaming down their faces as they sobbed uncontrollably.

Isabella lay limp in their arms, her eyes closed, and her chest...still. Meili's dad's gaze locked onto her face, and his heart sank. She wasn't breathing.

"Oh no...oh no, no, no..." he whispered, feeling a wave of dread wash over him. Meili stood frozen, her eyes wide with a mix of horror and guilt.

Her dad's eyes darted to her, but she didn't seem to register his presence. She was lost in the tragedy unfolding before them.

As Meili's gaze rolled slowly from her dad's face to the ground, her voice barely above a whisper, she spoke the words that echoed in her mind: "Wh...how could I let this happen?"

The weight of her guilt and grief hung in the air, heavy with unspoken regret.
