The morning sun cast a serene glow over the village, the peaceful atmosphere a stark contrast to the turmoil of the previous day. Si-Fu Zabuza, accompanied by two Wulins, walked through the village gates, their footsteps quiet on the dusty path.
Elder Tan, the village leader, greeted them with a bow. "Si-Fu Zabuza, thank you for coming. We've had some... trouble here."
Si-Fu Zabuza's expression was stern, but his eyes betrayed a hint of curiosity. "Trouble, Elder Tan? We've received reports of dangerous hoodlums. What happened?"
Elder Tan nodded, launching into a detailed account of the events, from Jax's arrival to Meili's confrontation with him and his men. The Wulins listened intently, their faces impassive, while Si-Fu Zabuza's eyes narrowed, his interest piqued...
"Our young warrior Meili stepped up and neutralized the threat," Elder Tan said, his voice tinged with relief and concern. Si-Fu Zabuza's gaze locked onto the elder, his eyes piercing. "Neutralized the threat?" he echoed, his tone even.
Elder Tan hesitated before elaborating, "Yes, Si-Fu. She demonstrated exceptional skill. Unfortunately, it came at a great cost—one casualty, a bitter loss indeed."
The Wulins exchanged a brief, inscrutable glance. Si-Fu Zabuza's stern expression softened slightly, curiosity sparking in his eyes. "Meili, you say? One of our newer students, I presume? We seem to have uncovered hidden potential within her."
"Yes, Si-Fu," Elder Tan replied, his voice tinged with a mix of pride and sorrow. "Meili is indeed one of your students. She's a remarkable girl. Though... the casualty was Isabella, the villager's daughter."
Si-Fu Zabuza's expression turned grave, his eyes narrowing. "I see," he said, his voice low and contemplative. "Tell me, Elder Tan, what exactly happened during the confrontation?"
The Wulins leaned in slightly, their interest piqued. Elder Tan took a deep breath, preparing to recount the events in greater detail...
"Elder Tan, I'd like to speak with Meili," Si-Fu Zabuza said, his voice firm but measured.
Elder Tan nodded, understanding the request. "Of course, Si-Fu. I'll have her brought to us."
He gestured to one of the villagers, who quickly departed to fetch Meili. Si-Fu Zabuza's eyes remained fixed on the direction the villager had gone, his expression unreadable.
The Wulins stood silently, their eyes fixed on Si-Fu Zabuza, awaiting his next move. The air was thick with anticipation, and the village elder's words hung in the balance, waiting for Meili's arrival...
However, Meili was still asleep.
In her dream, Meili found herself transported back to a carefree day with Isabella, Jake, and Brian. They were playing a lively game of tag, laughing and shouting as they chased each other around. Meili was "it," and the others darted away, their joyful shouts filling the air.
Isabella's voice rang out, "Meili, catch me! Catch me!" as she ran farther away. Meili initially chased after Jake, but Brian intervened, helping Jake evade Meili's grasp. "You're still it!" they chimed in unison.
Undeterred, Meili refocused her attention on Isabella, who continued to taunt her with cries of "Catch me, Meili!" As Meili pursued Isabella, the scenery around her began to shift. The sun-drenched field morphed into a foreboding forest, with leaves and grass stained crimson.
Meili's excitement turned to fear as the atmosphere darkened. Isabella's voice grew more urgent, "Meili, please!" Meili quickened her pace, her heart pounding in her chest.
Suddenly, she stumbled upon a horrific scene: Jax pinning Isabella to the ground. Isabella's eyes, filled with sorrow and accusation, locked onto Meili's. In a heart-wrenching whisper, she uttered, "Meili, why did you let me die?"
The words shattered Meili's dream, and she jolted awake, drenched in sweat. The memory of Isabella's anguished face lingered, haunting her.
Meili's breaths came in ragged gasps as she sat up, her heart still racing from the vivid nightmare. Meili took a deep breath, attempting to calm her racing thoughts.
"Wraithbane... Wraithbane? Answer me, goddamn it!" Meili's mental cry was met with oppressive silence. She sobbed, the anguish and frustration boiling over.
As she sat there, the weight of her guilt and anger crushed her. Memories of the fight replayed in her mind, and she relived the horror of losing control, despite Wraithbane's efforts to help her take down Jax and his men. The haunting words from her dream still echoed in her mind: "Meili, why did you let me die?" The pain and self-blame were suffocating her.
Meili couldn't shake off the feeling that she had failed her promise once again, this time due to her own recklessness. She laid recklessly on her bed. Meili's mind wandered back to her childhood, to a time when she first met Isabella.
Meili spent most of her days playing with her closest friends, Jake and Brian. They would run through the village, laughing and joking, and getting into all sorts of mischief. Their parents would often scold them for getting dirty or causing trouble, but the three friends didn't care. They were having too much fun.
"Hey, Meili, let's go explore the woods!" Jake would say, his eyes shining with excitement.
"Yeah, let's go!" Brian would chime in, already racing off towards the trees.
Meili would grin and follow her friends, feeling carefree and happy.
As they played, Meili would sometimes notice a shy, younger girl watching them from afar. The girl would quickly flee whenever Meili tried to approach.
Isabella's days were filled with loneliness and fear. She was often bullied by kids her age, who would tease her about her small stature and beautiful looks. They would call her names, like "Dollface" and "Fragile," and exclude her from games.
One day, while playing alone in the village square, a group of kids approached her. "Hey, look at the little doll," one of them sneered. "What are you doing all alone? Don't you have any friends?"
Isabella tried to ignore them, but they continued to taunt her. "You're so tiny and weak," another kid said, pushing her gently. "You can't even play with the rest of us."
Isabella felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes, but she refused to cry. She knew that would only make things worse. Instead, she turned and ran, escaping the cruel words and laughter.
After incidents like these, Isabella would often find herself watching Meili, Jake, and Brian from afar. She admired their friendship and camaraderie, wishing she could be a part of it. But every time she tried to approach, she would get nervous and flee.
As Meili, Jake, and Brian played in the village square, Meili would occasionally notice Isabella watching them from a distance. She would catch glimpses of the shy girl, her big brown eyes fixed on them with a mixture of longing and fear.
Meili felt a pang of curiosity and sympathy for the girl. She wanted to approach her, to talk to her and find out more about her. But every time she tried, Isabella would quickly flee, disappearing into the crowd or hiding behind a nearby building.
"Hey, have you guys noticed that girl watching us?" Meili asked Jake and Brian one day, nodding discreetly towards Isabella's hiding spot.
Jake and Brian followed Meili's gaze, but Isabella had already hidden herself. "No, who is she?" Jake asked, looking back at Meili.
"I don't know," Meili said, "but I've seen her around a few times. She seems really shy."
Brian shrugged. "Maybe she's just not interested in talking to us."
Meili wasn't so sure. She felt a connection to the girl, a sense that they might have something in common. She decided to try and approach Isabella again, to see if she could break through the girl's defenses.
Meili approached the spot where she had seen Isabella hiding, hoping to catch her off guard and strike up a conversation. But as she turned the corner, she saw Isabella's eyes widen in alarm, and the girl took off running before Meili could even say hello.
Meili watched her go, feeling a pang of disappointment. She had been so sure that she could connect with Isabella. She shrugged and turned to rejoin her friends, but her mind lingered on the shy girl.
A few days later, Meili saw Isabella again, this time running down a narrow alleyway.
Isabella ran down the narrow alleyway, lost in thought, until she collided with a burly man with a scruffy beard. "Oh, I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed, her eyes widening in alarm.
The man glared at her, his face reddening. "You're sorry? You're sorry? You just bumped into me and you're sorry? You need to pay for this!" He grabbed Isabella's hand, his grip tight.
"I-I didn't mean to," Isabella stammered, trying to pull her hand away. "It was an accident."
The man sneered. "Accident? You think you can just bump into me and it's an accident? You've got to pay for my treatment! I've got a sore spot where you bumped me, and I need medicine."
Isabella's eyes welled up with tears as she tried to free herself. "P-please let me go. I don't have any money."
The man tightened his grip. "You're not going anywhere until you pay me. You're going to come with me and we'll settle this."
Just as it seemed like the situation was escalating, Meili stepped in. "Hey, leave her alone!" she said firmly, stepping between the man and Isabella.
The man turned to Meili, his face still red with anger. "Mind your own business, kid. This doesn't concern you."
But Meili stood her ground. "Let her go. She's not going to pay you for something that wasn't her fault... I'm not leaving without her. "
The man glared at Meili, his face still red with anger. "Fine, fine. You think you're so smart, don't you, Meili? Alright, I'll let her go this time." He released Isabella's hand, but his demeanor changed suddenly. "But you two, you'd better watch out. Five... four... three... two... one... Run!" He chuckled and waved his hands.
Meili's eyes widened in surprise. "How did he know my name?" she wondered.
Isabella took advantage of the distraction to bolt away, but not before giving Meili a grateful look. Meili smiled and nodded, then turned to follow Isabella. As they ran around the corner, Meili glanced back and saw the man watching them with a warm smile on his face.
Unbeknownst to Meili, the man was indeed her father, a humble farmer who had a habit of watching over his daughter's whereabouts in the village. He was friends with Isabella's father, and he had been trying to bring the two girls together, hoping they would become friends. He chuckled to himself as he walked away, feeling pleased with the way things were going.
Meili caught up with Isabella, who was still panting from their sprint. "Hey, are you okay?" Meili asked, concern etched on her face.
Isabella nodded, her eyes still wide with fear. "Y-yes, thank you. I owe you one."
Meili smiled. "No need to thank me. I'm just glad I was there. But maybe we can walk together now? I'm Meili, by the way."
Isabella's face lit up with a small smile. "I'm Isabella. Nice to meet you, Meili."
As they walked, Meili learned more about Isabella's shy nature and her love for reading. She discovered that they had a lot in common, despite their differences. Meili's outgoing personality drew Isabella out of her shell, and soon they were laughing and chatting like old friends.
Meili introduced Isabella to Jake and Brian, who were lounging in the village square. "Guys, this is Isabella," Meili said, smiling. "I saved her from that weird guy in the alleyway."
Jake and Brian looked up, interested. "Saved her, huh?" Jake said, grinning. "Sounds like some adventure, Meili."
Meili rolled her eyes. "It was nothing, guys. Isabella's just really clumsy."
Isabella blushed, but smiled. "Hey, that's not fair. I'm not that clumsy."
Brian chuckled. "Well, we'll have to test you then. Want to play a game of tag with us?"
Isabella hesitated, but Meili encouraged her. "Come on, it'll be fun! We always play together."
The four of them spent the rest of the day playing tag, laughing, and joking around. Meili and Isabella were fast friends, and Jake and Brian seemed to welcome Isabella into their group.
As they played, Meili noticed that Isabella seemed to light up more when it was just the two of them together. When Jake and Brian started teasing her, Isabella would get quiet and withdraw. Meili didn't think much of it at the time, but later on, she realized that Isabella might not have been as comfortable around boys.
Despite this, the four of them had a great time together, and Meili was happy to see her friend fitting in.
As the days turned into weeks, Meili and Isabella grew closer, sharing secrets and laughter. Meili introduced Isabella to her favorite books and games, and Isabella taught Meili about the beauty of nature and the importance of kindness.
Jake and Brian were often around, but Isabella didn't seem to mind them as much when Meili was there. Meili was the glue that held their little group together, and she made sure everyone felt included.
One day, while they were walking through the village, Jake started teasing Isabella about her love of flowers. "Isabella's got a crush on every flower she sees!" he joked.
Isabella blushed, looking embarrassed. Meili shot Jake a look. "Hey, that's not nice. Isabella loves flowers because they're beautiful, not because she's got a crush on them."
Brian chuckled. "Yeah, Jake's just jealous because he can't tell the difference between a weed and a wildflower."
Jake playfully pushed Brian. "Hey, watch it! I'm a great gardener."
Isabella smiled, looking relieved. "Thanks, Meili. I do love flowers, and I think they're beautiful."
Meili grinned. "See, Jake? Isabella's taste is way better than yours."
As the sun set and the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, Meili called out to Isabella, asking her to meet her outside. Isabella walked out of her house, curious about what Meili wanted to talk about.
The night air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers. Meili smiled, holding out her hand. In it were two delicate, star-shaped flowers - Queen Anne's Lace. "I saw how much you loved these flowers today," Meili said, handing one to Isabella. "I wanted us to have one each to hold onto."
Isabella's eyes lit up as she took the flower, her fingers brushing against Meili's. "They're beautiful," she whispered, inhaling the flower's sweet fragrance.
Meili smiled, her eyes shining with a mix of sadness and determination. "Isabella, I wanted to talk to you about something important. I'm leaving soon to train at the School of Iron Fist. I'll be gone for a while."
Isabella's face fell, her eyes welling up with tears. "You're leaving?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper.
Meili nodded, her own eyes misting. "I know it's sudden, but I have to do this. I want to be strong and protect the people I care about."
Isabella looked down at the flower in her hand, her fingers tracing the delicate petals. "I'll miss you," she said, her voice cracking.
Meili's heart swelled with emotion. "I'll miss you too, Isabella. But I'll come back, and we'll have more adventures together. Promise."
Isabella's face lit up with a smile. "I know you will. You'll be the greatest warrior ever, and I'll be right here, cheering you on." Meili smiled back, feeling grateful for her friend's unwavering support.
As they stood there under the starry sky, holding their Queen Anne's Lace flowers, Meili felt a deep connection to Isabella. It was a moment that would stay with her forever, a reminder of the bond they shared.
