Though they had travelled a significant distance Southwest from Alterra, there were still many, many territories in between, most of which were skipped because of the 'teleportation jumps'.
They planned to set up influence along this line, and the circus was a great way to start doing so while making money at the same time.
In the future, the Circus would be one of the many ways that Alterra consistently gained prestige, even when they didn't do much anymore.
Another reason was to create an actual trading path.
