If they had other responsibilities to look after, then there would be times when they would have to put aside their pride and everything else for the sake of supporting themselves and those around them so that they and others did not lose anything else important to them.
If they had a family to support or others relying on them, fewer people would be able to gamble everything like that.
Some needed to think about their families or those who relied on them, rather than trying to hold onto what was already falling apart and burdening them and anyone else affected by it.
The chaotic era would bring many opportunities, which could help to overcome those difficulties, but they would come with many challenges and difficulties that those smaller Balancer families and organisations would not be able to handle.
If they were unable to adapt to the situation and take advantage of what was happening, then they would still have difficulties keeping what they had running.
