There were always alternative ways to create opportunities for themselves with what was available to them.
They could just as easily do everything alone when it came to gathering information and investigating, allowing them to claim the credit before Balancer organisations or families.
They could get involved with the trade within the supernatural world, or they could even make use of their knowledge to seek out benefits for themselves in other ways.
It was just a matter of how much they knew and how far they were willing to go to do that.
Since it was the Balancers who were risking their lives the most, they would be the ones getting paid the most when the money was being split among those who contributed to each job.
