Chapter 8 - Sweet breakfast

The night, having been as tempestuous as it was sweet, transformed into a sanctuary of tranquility for Jake. Contemplating the Kazakh sleeping peacefully in his bed felt like a dream from which he never wanted to wake. Far from any intention of taking advantage of the situation, the Canadian only sought to build a healthy, patient bond with him. Moving with extreme caution so as to not disturb his rest, he approached the bed to remove his jacket, shoes, and belt, allowing him to sleep comfortably. Although he considered searching for pajamas for him, he preferred not to risk waking him; he changed his own clothes in silence, gently tucked him in, and arranged the gifts on one side of the bedspread. That night, Jake settled down to sleep on the sofa, happy to guarantee his beloved Beky a peaceful rest, completely safe from the hostilities and ghosts of the past embodied by the Russian.

The hours ticked away slowly and quietly in the room. When the first morning rays began to filter through the large window, Aibek shifted lazily beneath the sheets. In his lethargy, his body bumped against the teddy bears Jake had gifted him; out of pure instinct, he held them tightly in his arms with tenderness before drifting back into a light slumber.

From the sofa, Jake watched the scene with a mix of rapture and sweetness. Incapable of resisting the beauty of the moment, he reached for his mobile phone to capture the instant, making sure to immortalize that soft, relaxed side of the Kazakh that very few had the privilege of knowing. Today had to be perfect; the Canadian had taken care to meticulously plan every detail to prevent fans, press, or autograph hunters from interrupting the privacy they so desperately needed.

"Jake..." Aibek murmured from the bed, half-stretching.

Noticing the black-haired youth waking up, Jake closed the distance and sat on the edge of the mattress, reaching out to gently brush his cheek. His affection for the younger man was immense, but he forced himself to rein in the intensity of his words; he didn't want to overwhelm him or bring the depth of his feelings to light so soon.

"I'm right here..." the Canadian whispered, his voice slightly husky from the silence of the night.

"I'm hungry, Jake," Aibek announced, finally opening his eyes.

The Kazakh's dark gaze met Jake's violet eyes head-on, creating an instant of absolute connection in which the rest of the world seemed to vanish.

"You wake up exactly the same way you did when you were a kid," Jake commented with a melancholic smile. "First you'd call my name, and then you'd immediately whisper what you were craving."

At the memory, Aibek sat up in bed to stretch fully. However, mid-movement, a sudden wave of embarrassment washed over him as the precision of Jake's words sank in. The realization that their bond stretched so far back, combined with the guilt of having forgotten the Canadian during the years he had been mired in his own conflicts, made his stomach turn. He felt terrible for having erased from his memory the one person who, despite the distance and silence, had never stopped following his steps or watching over him from the shadows. Seeking refuge from the awkwardness and the blush creeping into his cheeks, Aibek grabbed one of the pillows and buried his face in it.

"Come on, Beky, don't hide," Jake teased with a playful smile that only made the younger youth cling even tighter to the cushion. The Canadian's undeniable charm disarmed his defenses far too easily. "It's time to go eat breakfast!"

Aibek, his face still buried in the fabric, merely nodded in acceptance.

A short while later, in the privacy of his own room, Aibek dressed in a comfortable yet neat outfit. Looking at the gifts on the bed, he hesitated for a second, but the warmth of the gesture prompted him to debut the plush backpack, securing the two keychains with the intertwined initials of their names onto the zippers. He packed his belongings along with a matching scarf and stepped out into the hallway. He was startled so badly his heart nearly leaped out of his chest upon opening the door and finding Jake standing firmly right before the threshold. By pure reflex, Aibek slammed the door right in his face, eliciting a muffled groan from the Canadian from the impact.

"Damn it, Jake! You nearly scared me to death!" the Kazakh exclaimed, opening the door again with a pronounced pout on his lips and his cheeks puffed out in indignation.

"But I told you I'd come get you, Beky! There was no need to hit me with the door," Jake protested with his usual sense of drama, though amusement danced in his eyes.

Without dwelling on it, the Canadian gently took him by the arm and guided him toward the elevators, heading for the hotel restaurant.

"I'm sorry, Jake... I didn't mean to," Aibek apologized, calmer now as they descended.

"The first time we crossed paths again, you did the exact same thing," he recalled with a light chuckle, looping his arm around him in a half-hug as the elevator doors slid open.

Upon entering the restaurant, their prior reservation led them directly to a secluded table by the window—the ideal spot for Aibek to enjoy the view of the snowy day without feeling exposed. The hotel staff wheeled out a cart bearing a wide variety of breakfast dishes. As they shared the food and engaged in a fluid conversation, whispers in the dining hall were not long in coming; the presence of the two medalists sharing the morning sparked confusion among some diners and the suppressed enthusiasm of fans watching them from afar.

Jake knew perfectly well that they would be the center of headline attention again if they continued to show themselves together for the rest of the day, but far from bothering him, the idea only reaffirmed his intentions. He didn't plan on leaving his side.

"We'll go out for a walk after this, what do you think, Beky?" Jake proposed, locking his eyes onto him across the table.

Faced with the prospect of a quiet, pressure-free afternoon, the younger youth found no reason to refuse. With the Grand Prix Final officially concluded and a whole year's buffer before the start of the new season, they both had a long, well-deserved vacation ahead to enjoy each other's company.
