Chapter 10 - Our date (2)

Once changed and ready, they both made their way to the shoreline. The Kazakh seemed to transform, moving from side to side with the joy of a young child as he gathered seashells from the damp ground; he would immediately run over to showcase them as trophies to the Canadian, who delightfully accepted each little treasure, tucking them carefully into his pockets so they wouldn't get lost.

From a distance, the scene did not go unnoticed. Through the lens of a mobile phone, a spectator was live-streaming the moment under the straightforward title of "JJ and Aibek Kenes playing on the beach." The stream quickly began to fill with users who, touched by the skaters' unexpected camaraderie, flooded the screen with affectionate reactions, choosing to merely watch from a digital distance without shattering the bubble of privacy surrounding the pair.

Suddenly, in the midst of the laughter, Jake caught Aibek by surprise and swept him into the sea. The Kazakh, caught off guard by the swelling waves, clung tightly to the Canadian's neck.

"Calm down... nothing is going to happen to you," Jake assured with a warm, steady smile.

Only then did the black-haired youth release the tension in his shoulders, allowing himself to enjoy the sway of the water without loosening the secure hold the older man provided.

Time on the coast slipped away quickly. Shortly after, they found themselves in the resort's shower area, washing away the remnants of sand and salt spray before changing. Upon returning to the vehicle, Aibek was sporting a new gift from Jake: a highly insulating, casual athletic set consisting of a long-sleeved shirt and sweatpants whose kneepads featured discrete embroideries of brown bears. The design paired flawlessly with the skater's slender silhouette, lending him an endearing look that Jake couldn't help but silently admire.

"We're heading somewhere else, Beky, don't get impatient," Jake commented with a light chuckle, noticing his companion's expectant gaze.

Aibek settled into the passenger seat, concealing a faint blush as the car rolled into motion once more. The meticulousness with which the Canadian organized every single step of the day was astonishing; it stood in stark contrast to the disorganized, impulsive nature he usually displayed on the professional circuit, revealing an unfamiliar, mature facet driven entirely by the desire to please the younger youth.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the network, Zinov Kuznetsov stared fixedly at his phone screen. The video from the beach reflected a closeness that made his stomach churn. Incapable of containing his fury at the sight of the Kazakh smiling at the Canadian's side, he smashed his device against the hallway wall. Though the screen barely suffered a scratch, the rage in his chest remained entirely intact. The notion of driving a wedge between Aibek and Jake began to morph into a fixed obsession; it was simply a matter of figuring out how and when, but he swore to himself to break that bond by any means necessary.

Oblivious to the storm brewing in the distance, Aibek ended up falling fast asleep in the passenger seat, overcome by the exhaustion of the walk and the lullaby of the engine on the highway. Jake continued driving in silence, a soft smile reflected in the windshield, acutely aware of how the black-haired youth's presence managed to soften his usual egocentrism.

After a couple of hours on the road, the urban landscape yielded to the dense expanse of a temperate forest. The vehicle navigated down a tree-lined path before pulling into the covered garage of a tall, elegantly designed cabin. Wishing to prolong Aibek's rest, Jake avoided waking him abruptly. He covered him with a thick blanket and, taking him into his arms with extreme care, cradled him toward the porch of the elevated house. He managed to bring the luggage inside just in time, before the first heavy drops of an impending downpour began to pelt the roof.

"Jake... where are we?" Aibek asked, slowly blinking his eyes open as he snuggled into the wide living room sofa, cocooned in blankets.

"In a forest, a place where no one will see us or harass us," Jake replied, approaching gently to brush a few stray locks of hair from his forehead and press a tender kiss to his cheek.

"I see... thank you. It has been a beautiful day," the Kazakh admitted, tracing a small smile before turning his face toward the massive glass window, watching the rain drench the outdoor landscape.

"We made it just in time. Are you hungry?" Jake inquired, wrapping him in a brief embrace on the sofa.

"A little," Aibek whispered shyly.

"Then I'll whip up some dinner and turn on the heating to warm the place up. Stay right here, rest, and I'll show you the bedroom later."

Jake handed him the television remote and retreated toward the kitchen, dissolving down the hallway.

Aibek remained in the living room, basking in the rising warmth of the cabin and the layout of the blankets enveloping him. The Canadian's constant attentiveness planted a peaceful warmth in his chest that he hadn't experienced in a very long time. After a bit of distraction in front of the screen, the aroma of food began to flood the space. Jake returned to the living room carrying a tray with toasted sandwiches, mugs of hot chocolate, and a steaming stew he had skillfully managed to improvise.

"Everything looks delicious, Jake!" the younger youth exclaimed, pleasantly surprised by the dinner's appearance.

"I am excellent in the kitchen! After all, this was crafted by the hands of the King," Jake declared with his signature theatricality.

The boasting elicited a genuine laugh from Aibek, who had to hold his stomach as he laughed with complete freedom. Hearing it, Jake froze beside him, utterly spellbound by the clean sound of his laughter and the light in his dark eyes. In the stillness of the cabin, surrounded by the sound of the rainstorm, the dynamic between the extroverted Canadian and the reserved Kazakh champion seemed to click perfectly, mapping out the beginning of a road that, inevitably, they would walk together.
