Chapter 20 - Chapter 20-Trap

The fox girl slowly woke from her uneasy sleep, her body still weak and aching. For a moment, she remained lying on the rough bedding, listening carefully to the faint sounds around her.

Then she pushed herself up and stood, her movements slow and cautious.

The cave was still dark, but her ears twitched slightly as she focused on the smallest disturbances. Her senses guided her more than her eyes. She took a few careful steps forward, her gaze fixed on the entrance.

One of the stones had fallen aside, and through the opening, a thin stream of moonlight slipped into the cave.

In that pale light, she saw it.

A shadow.

Her body tensed instantly.

The shape moved slightly, stepping closer to the entrance. Her breath caught in her throat as she watched, ready to run if needed.

Then, as the figure came into the light, she realized what it was.

A small deer.

The animal paused for a brief second, its eyes meeting hers. Then, as if startled by her presence, it turned and quickly ran away into the forest.

The cave fell silent again.

For a moment, she simply stood there, her heart still racing. Then, slowly, she let out a quiet breath. It wasn't an enemy… just a harmless creature.

After a few minutes, she moved to the entrance and carefully placed the fallen stone back into position, blocking it as best as she could. Once she was done, she returned to her bedding and lay down again, though her sleep came lightly this time.

By morning, the darkness had faded.

Soft light filtered into the cave as the fox girl stepped outside. The forest looked different in daylight, but it was no less dangerous. She knew she couldn't stay there any longer.

If she kept moving, even if it took months, she might eventually reach a demi-human village. Somewhere safe. Somewhere she could survive.

With that thought, she began walking again.

Hours passed as she moved through the forest, her body still weak but driven by the will to live. Eventually, she reached the edge of a river. The sound of flowing water filled the air, clear and steady.

Then she heard something else.

A faint sound nearby.

Her body stiffened. Instinctively, she moved behind a tree, hiding herself as she carefully peeked toward the riverbank. Her heart pounded as she searched for the source of the noise.

Were they humans? She held her breath.

Then she saw them.

Two demi-human girls were sitting near the river.

They weren't moving.

For a moment, hope rose inside her chest. If they were demi-humans, then they might help her. And if they were here, it meant a village could be nearby.

Carefully, she stepped out from behind the tree and slowly approached them.

As she got closer, she called out softly, "Hello…"

Both girls turned at the sound of her voice.

But instead of relief, their faces were filled with fear.

Tears streamed down their cheeks. Their bodies trembled. From the front, their injuries were clearly visible—cuts, bruises, and dried blood marked their skin.

Something was wrong.

The fox girl's steps slowed.

A cold feeling spread through her chest.

Before she could react, the truth revealed itself.

This was a trap.

From behind the trees, multiple humans suddenly emerged, their weapons already drawn. In an instant, they surrounded her from all sides, cutting off every possible escape.

The fox girl froze, her eyes widening in shock. She had walked straight into danger.
