Chapter 19 - Chapter 19-The Cave Isn’t Empty

The white fox girl remained still for a moment, her small body pressed tightly against the tree as she listened.

The voices of the human soldiers had faded, and for now, the forest had grown quiet again. Slowly, she lifted her head and looked around, her eyes filled with fear and caution. It seemed they were gone.

A faint sense of relief passed through her chest—but it didn't last long.

She knew she couldn't stay there. If the soldiers returned to search the area again, she would be found. And if that happened… there would be no escape.

Gritting her teeth, she forced herself to move.

She stepped out from her hiding place and began walking deeper into the forest, her movements unsteady but determined. The night had already grown darker, and the fire in the distance only made the shadows feel more alive. Her vision was still blurred, and every step felt heavy, but she kept going.

Using magic to create light crossed her mind for a moment—but she quickly dismissed it. Even a small flame could reveal her position, and if the humans noticed… they would come.

So she continued forward in darkness.

After some time, she came across a small cave along the side of a rocky slope. It was partially hidden by uneven stone and shadows, making it difficult to notice at first glance.

She stopped and stared at it.

A cave could be a safe place… but it could also be dangerous.

Many beasts and monsters lived in places like this.

Still, she had no other choice.

Carefully, she stepped inside.

Her body remained tense as she moved deeper, her eyes scanning every corner, ready to run at the slightest sound. The air inside was cold and still. There were faint signs that something had once lived there scratches along the stone and scattered debris—but there was no presence now.

It seemed abandoned.

Perhaps whatever creature had lived here had already left.

After checking as much as she could, she finally allowed herself to breathe a little easier.

"…I'll stay here," she thought quietly.

Further inside, she noticed a slightly raised flat stone surface. It wasn't very large, but it was enough for her small body. Sleeping on the ground would be dangerous—this forest was filled with poisonous insects and hidden creatures that crawled in the dark.

At least here, she would be a little safer.

She stepped back outside the cave for a moment, gathering dry grass and soft leaves despite her exhaustion. Her hands trembled as she worked, but she forced herself to continue. Once she had enough, she returned inside and spread them across the stone, creating a thin, rough bedding.

Before settling down, she went back outside once more.

The cave entrance was small, but still wide enough for something to enter.

She searched nearby and found a few medium-sized stones. One by one, she dragged them toward the entrance, using what little strength she had left to block it as much as possible. It wasn't perfect, but it would at least make noise if something tried to come in.

If humans discovered her… they would kill her—or worse, turn her into a slave.

And humans weren't her only danger.

This forest was filled with monsters.

To them, she was nothing more than prey.

When she was finally done, she returned inside the cave. Her body ached, and her strength was nearly gone. Slowly, she lay down on the makeshift bedding, curling into herself for warmth.

The darkness surrounded her once again.

But this time… she had a place to hide.

For now, it was enough.

After a few hours, the silence inside the cave was suddenly broken.

One of the stones she had placed at the entrance shifted and fell with a dull thud against the ground.

The sound echoed faintly through the narrow space.

Her eyes snapped open.

For a moment, she didn't move. Her body remained still, but her senses sharpened instantly. Her breathing slowed as she listened carefully.

Then she heard it.

A faint sound from outside.

Something was there.

It brushed lightly against the remaining stones, as if trying to push its way inside.

Small bits of gravel shifted, and the blocked entrance trembled slightly.

Her heart began to pound.

Something… was trying to enter the cave.
