Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Target Recognition

The movement didn't stop.

It adapted.

The moment Jared noticed it—

It slowed.

Reactive behavior.

"…everyone stay still," Jared said quietly.

No one listened.

Of course.

"…what do you mean we're not alone?!" someone snapped.

The red light flickered again.

Stronger now.

Enough to see—

Shadows.

Shapes.

And—

It.

Tall.

Thin.

Featureless.

Not human.

"…what is that?" Iris would've asked.

But she wasn't here.

"…unknown," Jared said.

The thing moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

A blur—

Then gone.

A scream echoed.

"…it touched me!"

Panic.

Wrong response.

Jared stepped forward.

Track movement.

Predict pattern.

The entity appeared again—

Closer this time.

Near one of the candidates.

Frozen.

Target locked.

"…move," Jared said.

Too late.

The entity lunged.

Not violent—

Precise.

It tapped the candidate's shoulder.

Then—

A sharp sound.

The lights flashed red.

"MARKED."

Silence.

The candidate staggered back.

"…what does that mean?"

No answer.

Then—

The floor beneath him shifted.

Dropped.

He disappeared.

Just like that.

No scream.

No return.

Silence exploded into tension.

"…removal," Evan said quietly.

Jared's mind accelerated.

Entity = selector.

Contact = elimination trigger.

"…avoid contact," Jared said immediately.

"…YOU THINK?!" someone shouted.

The entity moved again.

Faster now.

More aggressive.

Because now—

It had data.

Jared's hand moved to his pocket.

Phone.

Stimulus required.

He activated it.

A sharp burst of sound.

Instant clarity.

Time slowed.

The entity appeared—

Mid-motion.

Jared saw it clearly now.

No face.

No features.

Just form.

Predictable trajectory.

He stepped—

Sideways.

Just enough.

The entity passed him—

Missed.

Success.

"…it tracks movement," Jared said.

"…but commits once locked."

Evan moved next.

Calm.

Precise.

He didn't react late.

He moved early.

Avoided before the entity reached him.

Control.

Two methods.

Jared = reaction.

Evan = prediction.

The others—

Struggled.

One ran.

Wrong.

The entity followed instantly.

Faster.

Caught him.

Mark.

Gone.

Silence.

Now—

Only six remained.

Jared exhaled slowly.

Variables reduced.

Danger increased.

"…pattern confirmed," he said.

"…but not complete," Evan replied.

A pause.

"…it's learning."

Jared's eyes sharpened.

Because he saw it too.

The entity stopped.

Not moving.

Observing.

Adapting.

Just like them.

The red light flickered again.

Stronger.

The voice returned.

"PHASE TWO."

Silence.

Then—

The floor shifted.

Walls moved.

The space changed.

Smaller.

More confined.

Less room to move.

Jared's mind accelerated again.

Less space = higher contact probability.

The entity moved.

Faster than before.

And this time—

It didn't hesitate.
