Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Threshold

Jared couldn't choose.

That was the truth.

Too many paths.

Too many outcomes.

Decision failure.

The entity closed in.

Direct.

Certain.

Evan moved.

Fast.

But not toward the entity.

Toward Jared.

"…stop," he said.

Jared didn't respond.

Because he couldn't.

His mind fractured further.

Left.

Right.

Forward.

Delay.

All valid.

All wrong.

The entity lunged.

No time.

Evan's hand moved—

Struck Jared's shoulder.

Hard.

Physical impact.

A jolt.

Jared's body reacted—

Not his mind.

Still fragmented.

"…you're thinking too much," Evan said sharply.

"…incorrect," Jared replied—

But the words overlapped.

Delayed.

Broken.

The entity adjusted mid-lunge—

Corrected its path.

Too close.

Evan stepped in front.

Intercept.

Risk.

"…move!" Evan snapped.

Jared didn't.

Because every option—

Still existed.

Then—

Something changed.

Not outside.

Inside.

A memory.

Iris.

"…you really won't stop."

"…no."

"…that's worse."

Silence.

Her voice—

Clear.

Simple.

Not data.

Not calculation.

Just—

Real.

Jared's thoughts slowed—

For a fraction of a second.

Single input prioritized.

Everything else—

Dropped.

Noise.

Irrelevant.

Only one variable remained.

Survive.

Jared moved.

No prediction.

No over-analysis.

Just action.

He stepped—

At the last possible moment.

The entity missed.

Clean.

Silence.

The world stabilized.

Not perfect.

But aligned.

Jared exhaled.

Slow.

Controlled.

The fracture—

Didn't disappear.

But it narrowed.

Overdrive reduced.

Evan stepped back.

Watched.

"…you simplified," he said.

"…optimized," Jared replied.

But this time—

There was a difference.

He wasn't trying to process everything.

Only what mattered.

The entities moved again—

Jared tracked them—

But didn't split.

Didn't overreach.

He chose—

One.

Moved.

Avoided.

Clean.

Evan handled the second.

Controlled.

Efficient.

Now—

Their movements aligned again.

But differently.

Jared—

Less chaotic.

Evan—

Less rigid.

Balance.

The red light pulsed once more.

Then—

Stopped.

The entities froze.

Mid-motion.

Silence returned.

The voice echoed.

"THRESHOLD ACHIEVED."

A pause.

"SUBJECT STABILIZED."

Jared stood still.

Breathing steady.

Mind—

Clear.

Not faster.

Better.

Because this time—

He didn't try to control everything.

Only enough.

Evan looked at him.

"…you changed," he said.

"…temporary," Jared replied.

But even he—

Knew that wasn't entirely true.

Because now—

He understood something new.

Not all information—

Was necessary.

And chasing everything—

Was weakness.

The walls began to shift again.

The space opened.

Light returned.

Level Two—

Wasn't over.

But Jared—

Was different.
