Chapter 5 - The Power She Was Never Meant to Have (ch-5)

Chapter 5

"The Power She Was Never Meant to Have"

"I can't let either of you leave."

The words settled in the air like a death sentence.

Cold.

Final.

Unavoidable.

My breath hitched as the forest around us seemed to grow darker.

Heavier.

Danger pressed in from every direction.

The man's red eyes glowed brighter.

No longer amused.

No longer playful.

Now—

He was serious.

The wolf in front of me growled.

Low.

Deadly.

And for the first time—

I didn't feel fear.

Not from him.

My fingers tightened slightly as I stood behind him.

Close.

Protected.

That strange connection between us pulsed again.

Stronger than before.

Alive.

"You should have walked away," the man said, his voice colder now. "But you didn't."

The wolf didn't move.

Didn't respond.

But I felt it.

That shift.

That decision.

He wasn't leaving.

He wasn't letting me go.

And somehow—

That thought didn't scare me.

It should have.

But it didn't.

"Last chance," the man continued, raising his hand slowly. "Step aside… and I might let you live."

A pause.

Silence.

Then—

The wolf took a step forward.

Closer.

Threatening.

Final.

My heart pounded.

That was his answer.

The man sighed.

"Such a shame," he muttered.

And then—

Everything exploded.

A surge of dark energy shot forward from his hand, tearing through the air like a storm.

The wolf moved instantly.

Blocking it.

The impact shook the ground.

I stumbled back, gasping as the force of it hit like a wave.

But he didn't fall.

Didn't break.

He stood there.

Unshaken.

Fury burned in his golden eyes.

And then—

He attacked.

The forest erupted into chaos again.

Claws met power.

Force met force.

But this time—

It was different.

The man wasn't holding back anymore.

And neither was he.

The ground cracked beneath their movements.

Trees shattered.

The air itself seemed to tear apart.

I couldn't breathe.

Couldn't think.

All I could do—

Was watch.

And hope.

Hope he wouldn't lose.

(His POV)

End him.

That was the only thought left.

He was a threat.

To me.

To her.

And that alone—

Was enough.

My wolf roared, pushing forward with everything it had.

Stronger.

Faster.

Deadlier.

But he wasn't weak.

He matched every strike.

Every movement.

And worse—

He was watching her.

Always watching her.

Waiting.

For an opening.

No.

I wouldn't allow it.

(Back to her POV)

I could feel it.

Something building inside me.

That strange sensation from before—

It was back.

Stronger.

Hotter.

Like something was waking up.

My chest tightened.

"What… is this…?" I whispered.

The air around me shifted.

Not from them.

From me.

I stumbled slightly as a strange warmth spread through my body.

No.

Not warmth.

Energy.

My heart started racing faster.

Too fast.

Something was wrong.

Or maybe—

Something was finally right.

A sharp cry left my lips as the feeling surged suddenly.

Stronger.

Brighter.

Uncontrollable.

The wolf's head snapped toward me instantly.

Those golden eyes widened.

For the first time—

I saw shock in them.

"No…" the man breathed, his red eyes locking onto me.

My heart dropped.

"What?" I whispered, panic rising again.

But they weren't looking at each other anymore.

They were both looking at me.

Like I was the danger now.

The energy inside me pulsed again.

And then—

It burst.

A wave of force exploded outward from my body.

The ground beneath me cracked.

The air trembled.

Everything—

Stopped.

Both of them were thrown back.

Hard.

I gasped, stumbling as the power faded just as suddenly as it came.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Shocked.

My hands trembled as I stared at them.

"I… I didn't…" I stammered.

The wolf slowly pushed himself up.

But this time—

He wasn't looking at the man.

He was looking at me.

Carefully.

Like I had just become something new.

Something unknown.

Something dangerous.

"What… am I?" I whispered.

The man let out a low laugh.

But this time—

There was no amusement in it.

Only something darker.

Something certain.

"I was right," he said slowly.

My stomach twisted.

"Right about what?" I asked.

His gaze locked onto mine.

Sharp.

"About you being important."

A pause.

Then—

His smile returned.

Wider.

More dangerous than before.

"You're not human."

The world stopped.

"What…?" I breathed.

The words didn't make sense.

They couldn't.

But deep inside—

That strange feeling—

It didn't deny it."

"You're not human."

The words echoed in my head.

Again.

And again.

No.

That couldn't be true.

"I am," I said quickly, my voice shaky but desperate. "I am human."

But even as I said it—

Something inside me hesitated.

Because I felt it.

That power.

That surge.

That… something.

Humans didn't do that.

My breath came out uneven as I looked down at my trembling hands.

"What did you do to me?" I whispered, more to myself than anyone else.

"I didn't do anything," the man replied calmly.

My head snapped toward him.

"Then what was that?" I demanded.

His red eyes studied me carefully.

Like I was something rare.

Something valuable.

Something dangerous.

"That," he said slowly, "was you."

A chill ran down my spine.

"No…" I shook my head. "That's not possible."

The wolf moved then.

Slow.

Careful.

He stepped closer to me again.

Not like before.

Not intense.

Gentle.

My breath caught as those golden eyes locked onto mine.

This time—

There was no confusion in them.

Only certainty.

Like he already knew.

"What… am I?" I whispered, my voice breaking slightly.

Silence.

Heavy.

Then—

Something unexpected happened.

The wolf shifted.

Not fully.

Not completely.

But enough.

His massive form began to change.

Blur.

Distort.

Reform.

My heart pounded wildly as I watched.

And then—

He was there.

Not a wolf.

A man.

Tall.

Strong.

Dangerous.

But no longer hidden behind fur and claws.

My breath caught.

He was—

Beautiful.

In a way that felt almost unreal.

Sharp features.

Dark hair.

Golden eyes that still burned with that same intensity.

And now—

They were fully focused on me.

"You're safe."

His voice.

Deep.

Low.

Controlled.

It sent a strange shiver down my spine.

"You don't know that," the other man said dryly.

The Alpha ignored him completely.

Instead—

He stepped closer.

And before I could react—

His hand reached out.

Gently.

Carefully.

He took my wrist.

The moment his skin touched mine—

The bond reacted.

A sharp pulse shot through my body.

Stronger than before.

My breath hitched.

And suddenly—

I felt it again.

Not just emotion.

Not just connection.

Something deeper.

His strength.

His control.

His restraint.

And beneath all of it—

Something dangerously close to… protectiveness.

"You shouldn't be here," he said quietly.

I swallowed.

"I didn't choose to be here," I replied.

A pause.

Then—

His grip tightened slightly.

"Now you are," he said.

My heart skipped.

Before I could respond—

The man behind him laughed.

"You really don't get it, do you?" he said.

The Alpha's expression darkened instantly.

"Leave," he said coldly.

But the man didn't move.

"Not until she understands what she is," he replied calmly.

My chest tightened.

"Then tell me," I said suddenly.

Both of them looked at me.

"Tell me what I am," I demanded, my voice shaking but firm.

Silence.

Long.

Heavy.

Then—

The man smiled.

"Dangerous," he said simply.

My breath caught.

"That's not an answer," I snapped.

"It is," he replied.

The Alpha stepped in front of me again.

Blocking him.

"Enough," he said sharply.

But I stepped around him.

"No," I said. "I want to know."

His jaw tightened.

"You're not ready," he said.

"I don't care," I shot back.

Silence.

Tension.

Then—

The man spoke again.

"She's not human," he repeated. "That much is obvious now."

My heart pounded.

"But she's not one of us either," he continued.

A pause.

"And that…"

His smile turned darker.

"Is the problem."

A chill ran down my spine.

"What does that mean?" I whispered.

But neither of them answered.

Because at that moment—

The forest shifted again.

The air grew colder.

Heavier.

And something inside me—

Reacted.

Stronger than before.

My breath hitched.

"No…" I whispered.

Not again.

The power inside me surged violently.

Uncontrolled.

Unstable.

The ground beneath my feet cracked again.

The Alpha moved instantly.

Grabbing me.

Pulling me against him.

"Control it," he said firmly.

"I can't!" I gasped.

His grip tightened.

"Yes, you can."

My heart raced wildly.

"I don't know how!" I cried.

The energy pulsed again.

Stronger.

Dangerous.

And this time—

It didn't just push outward.

It pulled.

Everything.

The air.

The ground.

Even them.

"What the—" the man stepped back sharply.

The Alpha held me tighter.

"Look at me," he said.

My eyes snapped to his.

Golden.

Steady.

Unmoving.

"Focus," he said quietly.

My breath came fast.

Uneven.

"I can't—"

"You can."

Something in his voice—

It grounded me.

Just slightly.

Enough.

The power wavered.

Flickered.

And then—

Slowly—

It stopped.

Silence fell.

My body went weak.

And before I could fall—

He caught me.

Holding me against him.

Safe.

For now.

But as I looked up at him—

I realized something terrifying.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.
