Chapter 4
"The One They Came For"
"Well… this is interesting."
The voice was smooth.
Cold.
Mocking.
And it definitely didn't belong to him.
My body went rigid as fear crawled up my spine.
Slowly… I turned toward the sound.
From the shadows—
A figure stepped forward.
Tall.
Lean.
Dangerous in a completely different way.
His eyes glowed too.
But not gold.
Red.
A chill ran down my spine.
"Another one…" I whispered under my breath.
The wolf beside me let out a low, threatening growl.
Louder this time.
Sharper.
Not just a warning.
A challenge.
The man smirked.
Completely unfazed.
"Well now," he said casually, his gaze flickering between me and the massive wolf. "I was wondering why the forest felt so… alive tonight."
My heart pounded harder.
Something about him felt wrong.
Not wild like the others.
Not controlled like him.
Something worse.
Calculated.
"Step away from her."
The command came from behind me.
Low.
Deadly.
Even in his wolf form…
I understood him.
The man raised an eyebrow.
"Her?" he repeated, amused.
His gaze landed on me again.
Slow.
Careful.
And then—
Something changed.
The amusement in his eyes disappeared.
Replaced by something darker.
Recognition.
"Well, well…" he murmured softly. "So it's true."
My breath hitched.
"What…?" I whispered.
The wolf growled again, stepping slightly in front of me.
Blocking his view.
Protecting me.
"You shouldn't have brought her here," the man continued, his voice losing its playful edge.
"I didn't bring her," the wolf's growl seemed to say.
Even if I couldn't understand the words—
I felt the meaning.
The tension in the air snapped tighter.
"Oh?" the man tilted his head. "Then she walked right into your territory on her own?"
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
The man chuckled.
Low and dark.
"That makes things even more interesting."
My stomach twisted.
"What are you talking about?" I asked, my voice shaking despite my attempt to stay calm.
His eyes shifted to me again.
And this time—
There was no mistaking it.
I was the target.
"You really don't know, do you?" he said softly.
A cold dread settled deep inside me.
"Know what?" I whispered.
The wolf stepped forward again, more aggressively this time.
A clear warning.
Don't answer.
But the man only smiled wider.
"She's important," he said simply.
The words hit me like a punch.
Important?
That didn't make any sense.
"I'm not—" I started.
"Silence."
The command wasn't loud.
But it wasn't directed at me.
It was directed at him.
The wolf.
My breath caught.
Because for a second—
Just a second—
He actually stilled.
My eyes widened.
What…?
The man's smirk deepened.
"You see?" he said softly. "Even he can't fully resist."
A low, furious growl ripped from the wolf's chest.
This time—
He didn't hold back.
He lunged.
The ground shook beneath the force of his movement.
But the man didn't move.
Didn't flinch.
Instead—
He raised his hand.
And just like that—
Everything stopped.
The wolf froze mid-attack.
My heart dropped.
"No…" I whispered.
That wasn't possible.
Nothing should be able to stop him like that.
And yet—
There he was.
Held in place.
Struggling.
Trapped.
The man's eyes glowed brighter.
Red.
Burning.
"You've gotten stronger," he said calmly. "But not enough."
Rage filled the wolf's gaze.
But he couldn't move.
Couldn't break free.
Panic surged through me.
"Let him go!" I shouted before I could stop myself.
The man's attention snapped to me.
And for a moment—
He looked surprised.
Then—
Amused.
"You're braver than I expected," he said.
"I said let him go!" I repeated, my voice shaking but firm.
His gaze softened slightly.
Not with kindness.
With interest.
"And why would I do that?" he asked.
"Because he hasn't done anything to you!" I shot back.
A pause.
Then—
A quiet laugh.
"Oh, little human," he said, shaking his head. "You really don't understand the situation, do you?"
My chest tightened.
"No," I admitted. "I don't."
His expression darkened again.
"That creature you're trying to protect?" he said slowly. "He's the only reason you're still alive."
I froze.
"What…?" I whispered.
His smile turned sharp.
"Because you," he continued, his voice dropping lower, colder…
"are the one we've been searching for."
My blood ran cold.
"What are you talking about?" I asked, panic rising again.
The wolf struggled harder now.
Fury blazing in his golden eyes.
But it didn't matter.
He was still trapped.
Still unable to move.
"You don't feel it?" the man asked softly.
"Feel what?" I whispered.
He stepped closer.
Too close.
And before I could react—
His hand lifted.
Reaching toward me.
The wolf let out a furious, desperate roar.
But he still couldn't move.
"Don't touch her."
The words weren't spoken.
They were felt.
Raw.
Dangerous.
The man paused.
His eyes flickered toward the wolf.
Then back to me.
And slowly—
He smiled.
"Oh…" he murmured.
"Now I understand."
My heart pounded wildly.
"Understand what?" I demanded.
His gaze locked onto mine.
Dark.
Certain.
"You're not just important," he said quietly.
A chill ran through my entire body.
"You're his."
The world seemed to stop.
"What…?" I breathed.
The wolf's growl deepened.
Fierce.
Possessive.
Terrifying.
And yet—
My heart reacted in a way that made no sense.
Faster.
Warmer.
"Impossible," the man muttered, almost to himself.
Then his gaze sharpened again.
"But if that's true…"
His smile turned dangerous.
"Then things just got a lot more interesting."
My breath hitched.
"What do you mean—"
But I didn't get to finish.
Because suddenly—
The ground beneath us trembled.
Cracked.
And something powerful surged through the air.
The hold on the wolf—
Broke.
The hold—
Shattered.
It wasn't slow.
It wasn't gradual.
It exploded.
A wave of raw, terrifying power burst through the air, so strong it forced me to stumble back.
My breath hitched.
The ground beneath my feet trembled.
Cracked.
And then—
He moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
One second he was frozen.
The next—
He was in front of him.
The impact was brutal.
A deafening crash echoed through the forest as both of them were thrown backward, slamming into the trees with enough force to splinter wood.
I gasped.
The wolf—no… him—
Stood tall.
Unrestrained.
His golden eyes burned brighter than before.
Not controlled.
Not calm.
Wild.
Furious.
And completely unleashed.
A low, dangerous growl rumbled from his chest.
"You shouldn't have touched her."
The voice—
It wasn't spoken.
But I heard it.
Felt it.
Deep in my bones.
The man straightened slowly, brushing dust off his clothes like nothing had happened.
But I saw it.
The tension in his shoulders.
The flicker of surprise in his red eyes.
"Well," he said softly, "that's new."
The wolf stepped forward.
Each step heavy.
Dominating.
The air shifted with him.
Darkened.
Dangerous.
"You've changed," the man continued, tilting his head slightly. "Or should I say… she changed you."
My heart skipped.
The wolf didn't respond.
He didn't need to.
Because the next second—
He attacked.
No warning.
No hesitation.
Pure instinct.
Claws collided with something unseen as the man barely managed to block the strike.
The force alone sent shockwaves through the ground.
I stumbled back again, my heart racing wildly.
This wasn't a fight.
This was destruction.
They moved too fast for my eyes to follow.
Blurs of shadow and light clashing violently across the clearing.
Trees snapped.
The ground split.
The air itself felt like it was tearing apart.
I could barely breathe.
And yet—
My eyes stayed locked on him.
The way he fought.
The way he moved.
Everything about him screamed one thing—
Power.
But there was something else too.
Something deeper.
Every time the man tried to move toward me—
He stopped him.
Every time.
Like an invisible line had been drawn around me.
And nothing—
Nothing was allowed to cross it.
(His POV)
Destroy.
That was the only thought left.
The only instinct.
He touched her.
He tried to reach her.
That alone sealed his fate.
My wolf roared inside me, no longer restrained.
No longer controlled.
Mine.
The word echoed again.
Stronger this time.
Unquestionable.
And I didn't fight it.
Not anymore.
(Back to her POV)
The man was fast.
Stronger than anything I had ever seen.
But it wasn't enough.
Not against him.
Not like this.
"You're losing control," the man said suddenly, blocking another brutal strike. "Careful… you might hurt her yourself."
My breath caught.
The wolf froze for half a second.
Just a second.
But it was enough.
The man smirked.
"See?" he said softly. "She's your weakness."
Something inside me twisted painfully.
Weakness…?
Before I could even process it—
The wolf snapped.
A deafening roar tore through the forest.
So loud it felt like the earth itself shook.
And this time—
There was no hesitation.
No control.
No restraint.
He lunged again.
Faster.
Stronger.
Deadlier.
The man barely had time to react before he was slammed into the ground with crushing force.
The impact echoed like thunder.
I gasped.
The wolf stood over him now.
Dominating.
Unstoppable.
His claws pressed dangerously close to the man's throat.
One move.
One second.
And it would be over.
Silence fell.
Heavy.
Tense.
"Go ahead," the man said, breathing heavily but still smiling. "Kill me."
The wolf growled.
Closer.
More dangerous.
"You won't," the man added.
A pause.
A dangerous one.
"Because if you do…" his red eyes flickered toward me.
"She dies too."
My heart stopped.
"What—?!" I choked out.
Everything froze.
The wolf stilled.
Completely.
"No…" I whispered.
That didn't make sense.
It couldn't.
The man's smile widened.
"You really don't know, do you?" he said softly.
"Know what?!" I demanded, panic rising.
His gaze locked onto mine.
Dark.
Certain.
"You're bound to him."
The words hit me like a storm.
"What…?" I breathed.
"If he kills me," the man continued calmly…
"The bond will break."
A chill ran through my entire body.
"And when it breaks…"
He smiled.
"So will you."
Silence.
Complete.
Shattering silence.
My heart pounded wildly in my chest.
"No…" I whispered.
This couldn't be real.
This couldn't be happening.
The wolf slowly lifted his gaze from the man—
And looked at me.
Those golden eyes…
For the first time—
They weren't just filled with rage.
They held something else.
Conflict.
Pain.
Choice.
